Maybe an answer to the locked bootloader... - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 General

I personally feel that AT&T locked the bootloader and will probably release a secure kernel in the near future to try and get a few lucrative government contacts. I'm not sure if you've all read that Samsung finally has the first Android phone that has passed the security tests by the Pentagon clearing select models for government and military use when it is knox enabled. Currently only one model is approved, the s4. So that being said I dont see them ever unlocking it.

Locks were meant to be picked and that's all I have to say about that.

Does the t-mob one have lte? If not then it's different hardware.

Why anyone would think AT&T is going to unlock the bootloader anyway? You think it's done by accident and they're going wake up one day and realize it, push an update, and the world will be a happy grand place once again?
It's locked and will stay locked until the hack is released to the public. Anybody looking for AT&T to unlock it, please say hi to the Tooth Fairy, the Easter Bunny, and Santa for me. OK.

I bet when unlocked, roms will be interchangeable.

The T-mobile version supports basically every GSM radio plus AT&T and T-mobile LTE bands. ROMs will be interchangable as is the case with every Samsung phone with the same hardware on both carriers..Skyrocket/GS2, GS3, Note 2...

So what is the purpose of this discussion? Get a TMobile Phone, get it unlocked and then use your ATT Sim? This has been discussed in numerous threads already. It is an option but you will pay more, buying the phone outright, and getting it unlocked.

I really don't think the US government is going to buy Canadien versions of a phone. And the OP may be on to something. There are currently Android phones in use by the US government. Verizon models...with locked bootloaders. This could be a move by AT&T to secure a very large government contract.

Hmmm, is there any difference between LTE Dual band and LTE? Sounds like I might get the T-Mobile version then. I could always craigslist the AT&T version.
AT&T: LTE: Bands 1/4/7/17; HSPA+/UMTS: 850/1900/2100MHz; GSM: 850/900/1800/1900MHz
T-Mobile: LTE: Bands 1/2/4/5/7/17; HSPA+/UMTS: 850/AWS/1900/2100MHz; GSM: 850/900/1800/1900MHz

Jesus with the exception of a few adults who understand what I was inferring, you can all piss off. It was my theory and one of the messages I got confirmed it. So, buy your unlocked export or a tmo phone but the next "update" if they really do want to break into the government market will release the secure kernel with SELinux not in permissive mode but enforced. I wasn't whining, I don't care. This phone will be my daily driver. I can use my note2, xperia z, htc hox+, nexus 4 or Galaxy nexus if I want to play. Was just an insight. As far as rally against AT&T.... Good luck.... 20000 govt and state contacts or 500 whining kids... time to find a new carrier for you. Verizon has been doing this for years.

i do not think this is the right reason of lock bootloader,
almost all carrier provide the contract phone with low price. but people always bought it and flash the rom or root it to remove the service or application of carrier in the phone, (althoug most them will be useless for us),so they demand manufacturer to lock it.

I bought the playstore version and am using it with Tmobile. I have issues with connecting to tmobiles LTE. It takes 5-10 minutes to connect and is always switching from lte to h+ to 3g. Tmobile told me it is because it is the playstore version. They also told me Samsung does a better job than LG with their WiFi modem.

Your LTE issue might be a defective, settings or regional issue. I have been a electronics seller and I left the job because I hate telling lies to customers. Whenever I hear of a representative misleading a customer, it reminds me that freasking job
There's a huge chance also that the Representative doesn't know anything about what he is selling/supporting or the tech involved with it. Even on google customer service...
There are only 2 different N5 (D820/ D821) US models are D820. A hardware difference implies a variation on the model # and yours is D820.

Can I use international S6 on Verizon

Previously on the S4 I came to the conclusion I could use the international variant of it on Verizon as it had the proper CDMA bands for the job, is this the same case with the S6? Could I buy the international one that is unlocked and use it on VZW network without problems and if I have them what would they be? Going to do my own homework of course but I always want XDA's opinion on things like this.

I was actually in the process of typing up this thread myself! I am also interested in the answer to this one. And can the international version be rooted? I need me some Greenify!
Edit: After speaking to a Verizon rep online, I was told "In theory, it should work; but we cannot guarantee device usability and stability from non-verizon devices".
Any other XDA thoughts?

The International one is fully bootloader unlockable and rootable from the start, hence why I want it over this locked down one. Though someone suggested to me in a PM to post this in the international forum so I will try that and update here with whatever results I get.

From what I could find it won't work because it's GSM and won't work with CDMA carriers. Here is a link to the info I found.
I remember reading that the Verizon and Sprint variants have a separate Qualcom modem in them to connect to their CDMA and LTE bands.
I have the US Verizon Galaxy S6 as well as my wife now. Currently in Cancun using a popped in TelCel SIM card seeing crazy 4G speeds on the hotel strip area.
So yea. The S6 from Verizon is killer with foreign SIMs.

955U at Tmobile store.

So I went to a Tmobile store and looked at the Galaxy s8+ and noticed the model was 955U not 955T
It was of course their demo unit which was strapped (tethered) to the desk which makes it impossible to feel properly in the hand... But whatever.
Curious if only the demo model was a U variant or what? I never payed attention to other models before now?
The U variant of other Samsung models, do they have Locked bootloaders? Is it only the F variant that is unlocked (bootloader)

The SM-G955U is suppose to be the Unlock variant of the S8+, which make it super interesting, Hope this comes with unlock bootloader

From what I read I'm not sure how long it will take to have T-Mobile officially unlock it. They have an app for that but they have several different criteria as far as being a current customer or a prepaid versus postpaid customer. Ive never unlocked a T-mobile phone with the app or a third party unlocking service so maybe someone with examples could chime in. It does seem AT&T has an easier online unlocking method for current and non customers to simply fill out a form.
And the U models are slow with updates

Looking for s8 plus with unlocked bootloader.

Hey guys.. i ordered my sprint s8+ and it will be here the 21st. I'm thinking about buying one with an unlocked bootloader and sending this one back. It has to work with sprint cdma. Anyone know where i can get one or what model that would be ?

No chance any international phone will ever be whitelisted by sprint. You have the hardest carrier to use unlocked GSM phones with. Sprint is CDMA and has a system of adding only the phones it will allow into its network

^ This. This is also why most of the phone reviewers, in the US anyway, have either AT&T or T-Mobile, as they're both use GSM. All unlocked phones sold in the international market are GSM, so you can basically plop in your SIM and you're good to go.
Verizon and Sprint are much trickier as they both use CDMA, which unless I'm mistaken, it's only in the US market. And with their whitelist system, even if you have the correct bands for their networks, it still might not work.
Lol that sucks being that I'm with Verizon. Ah well no root and roms. As long as it works great factory I guess I'll be okay.

Does the unlocked version support Sprint?

If you get the unlocked version from HTC's website, does it support Sprint, or will they have different radios? I tweeted HTC and they said that the unlocked version will NOT support Sprint.... But if you look on there website at the radios then I don't see an issue, they are the same as the unlocked version.
Here is a link to the website for the radios.
http://www.htc.com/us/smartphones/htc-u11/buy/#!color=black
And the unlocked radios:
http://www.htc.com/us/go/htc-u11-unlocked/
I also asked if I were to get the Sprint version would that support all other carriers (ie. AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon), I did not get a response from HTC.
I will say this would be absolutely ridiculous if the Sprint version is dumb down and doesn't support the rest of the world. I honestly would think about switching if this were the case. I just want to be on a GSM carrier that I don't have to worry about "if my phone will work" on this network. Annoying.
BTW I say this because I travel a lot, so having 1 phone that works everywhere would be the best thing in the world.

out of the box, the Unlocked ROM would not support Sprint, but the hardware is the same between the unlocked & sprint, so technically you could flash the Sprint ROM on the unlocked model. The problem is the unlocked IMEI would not be whitelisted. As far as the Sprint model supporting the GSM carriers...yes it would, provided the sim was unlocked...or you could flash the unlocked ROM.

OMFG THANK YOU! This makes way more sense now. I have been all over the Internet looking for an answer. Well at least I know the actual hardware is the same.
I feel like having to deal with hoping that Sprint will support the unlocked devices IMEI wpuld be worse then buying the Sprint flavor.
So I have 2 easy options then.
1. Buy it from Sprint at full price and do not extend my contact. Then have them unlock it which they can't say no to if I have no obligation to them.
2. Buy it from HTC but in the Sprint version. But I have to figure out if it is unlocked. I think it is. It looks like it is on there website.
Man I hate how buying phones and carrier plans work in the US. I wish we would go to an overseas model, and almost every phone is unlocked. Then you just decided what service you want yourself. So easy to just walk in a store and get service with whatever phone you want.

Ah that is very handy, I might look into doing that. Thank You.
However, I do think I am going to purchase the phone at full price anyway as that is what I was planning on doing, but this is good to know. At least the hardware is the same and I wont be locked down by Sprint. I should just buy it direct from HTC I think.

Yeah, it is cheaper to buy from HTC at full price especially with the $50 off code.. Plus you could make interest free payments via PayPal credit if you wanted to

Ya I was thinking the same thing. But its weird on HTC's website if you select the Sprint version it doesn't have the color black. But if you go to sprint they do..... facepalm.
Also I spoke with Sprint yesterday to see if they would tell me if the unlocked one works, and they refused to even check. They wanted the MEID of the device, which I don't have, and I told them I don't have it until I buy the phone online and have it shipped to me. So this is annoying.
Also I just ran across this article on Android Central that the Verizon version dose not have CDMA radios. Now that makes me wonder about the Sprint version.

I swear this is a headache. Just go to Sprint and buy the dang thing, then either unlock it myself or have them do it. Just have to suck up the extra $50.

Ya I guess you are right on that. I don't even want the things, I suppose I could just sell them. But I know myself and i am bad a selling electronics even if I don't want them.
Oh and went to Sprint's website today and I could not even click on the HTC U 11. I hope they didn't stop pre-orders. Or I could just till the device comes out I suppose.
If I buy the Sprint version from HTC. Can I still have Sprint unlock it?

last time I checked the device had to be active for 3 months before they would unlock, but not sure if anything has changed....but like I said earlier, it's not difficult to unlock yourself

Pre-ordered mine today and haven't received any sort of confirmation email from HTC. I also got 2-day shipping...we'll see if that makes any difference as to when it will :fingers-crossed:show up. :fingers-crossed:
Edit: Cancelled my pre-order and confirmed with 2 people on the support staff that they will not be shipping until mid-month.

Hey guys. Kinda bad news. HTC (Germany) just told me after telling me this morning my unit will ship today that it will ship on the 8th of June.
I asked why they didn’t contact me and sent me an email telling me it is delayed. They just told I am expected to contact them in order to know my shipping date. A bit ridiculous.
I sincerely hope they don’t have hardware issues.
Well if it’s the same as with my pixel xl then we all have to wait because HTC cant keep its production up with the demand.
