SMS Sending/Receiving Issue - Google Pixel 3 Questions & Answers

Hi,
I've run into a little bit of an issue with a pixel 3. I bought one at a good deal for my Dad but he's very slow to accept changes like this. I put his sim in the pixel 3 while his S7 was charging and set it up for him(Verizon). It worked great and he liked it but he's not very adventurous so he hasn't really tested it out and decided if he wants it. Anyway, I figure it's not big deal and we'll pop his sim back into the S7 and he can try again in a week.
This is where the problem happens. He has zero SMS issues with all but one contact, who also owns a pixel(2, I think). He sends texts on his S7 to this one contact but can only receive them on the pixel 3 and only through messages with the chat features turned on.
My question is: does anyone know how to solve this? My gut tells me a factory reset of the pixel would clear his sim info from the pixel and it wouldn't lose anything from his old device but I'm not 100% sure that would solve the issue. I've tried different SMS apps and it works for everyone except for that one contact and only if messages is the default with the chat features on.

It sounds like the advanced messaging features may have been turned on when the SIM card was inserted into the pixel phone. And for this one contact, they probably also had advanced messages turned on and since they established an advanced chat session, now their messages are trying to go through that service.
It probably requires an unenrollment from the advanced messaging service. This likely may have a delay.

The SIM card would likely need to be in the pixel when you turn off that feature for the unenrollment to work. If you want to unenroll without the SIM card inserted into the pixel, the above article mentions this page to unenroll https://messages.google.com/disable-chat

[Q] Can send MMS but not SMS?

Really strange. I suddenly lost the ability to send SMS messages. I can still receive them, and I can still send MMS, pictures...etc., but NOT SMS.
This has happened before once on my Nexus One, I went into messaging, opened settings, and there was an option for "Service Center number" or something similar...I was then able to input the SMSC # "12063130004" and all was well.
However, in Gingerbread on the nexus S, there is no such option under messaging settings
I tried *#*#info#*#* as well, went to the SMSC box which was blank, entered "+12063130004", then clicked update...but I keep getting "Update Error".
I'm not sure if this matters or not, but when I choose "Refresh" to the right of the blank SMSC box, instead of obtaining the correct telephone number, I get "00".
If anyone has encountered this, or has any other possible ideas...I'm all for it. I've tried some basic stuff, cycling battery, restoring from nandroid...even flashing a stock 2.3.1 and unrooting/unlocking the Nexus S, and I am still stuck, totally unable to send an SMS. Please help!

Possibly, thanks for checking. I wish there was a way to manually enter a SMS service number in messaging settings like in previous android versions. I was thinking maybe for some reason my SIM card is too old, and suddenly decided to not be recognized properly. Looks like I'll be going to t-mobile tomorrow,

I've found that the primary merit to taking my phone to T-Mobile when it's messed up is so the guy behind the counter has to go through the list of things you already tried that the phone support agent is required to tell you to try again instead of having to do it myself. At least I can check out some cool phones and accessories while I wait. >.>

I spoke to a lovely Tmobile rep. She lead me through troubleshooting, except it was for Froyo, not gingerbread. When I brought this to her attention, and reminded her this was a nexus s, she connected me to samsung , and the call never went through.
Could a 5 year old SIM card magically stop working properly for SMS?

honestly tell them you have an extremely old SIM and they will give u a free new one...if it deosnt help. then hell you got a free sim
Yeah. Unfortunately, since the Nexus S isn't supported by T-Mobile, giving you a new SIM card is about all they'll probably do, unless you're lucky and get a rep who's actually tech savvy.

The @Tmobile twitter is way handy and the reps who run that, are actual engineers so send them a tweet
This could be many things... does the Nexus S not have the ability to do the *#*#4636#*#*?
That is the code on every Android phone (save a very few POS) to get into the "engineering" menu. Select "phone" from that menu, then scroll to the bottom and bingo, SMS service center number entry... first hit refresh to see what is shows, if not correct delete, enter in the correct one, then update.
If the phone doesn't have the *#*#4636#*#* menu, not sure... perhaps your SIM doesn't have the SMS service center # saved to it anymore? New SIM would correct that, or putting your sim in an basic phone, then changing the service center # on that phone would put it back on the SIM.
Also, have you tried texting yourself to make sure it isn't a cross carrier issue? I know Verizon, for example, doesn't play very nicely with other carriers (actually all carriers prioritize in network traffic over cross carrier traffic, but Verizon seems to be especially bad in my experiences).
(FYI, I was looking through as I am thinking about getting a Nexus S and saw this thread, and couldn't help but toss in a word or two given I sell cell phones and have to deal with things like this all day).

I have the exact same issue.Stock phone with Mobilicity. I don't know what their service number is.
Went in to T-mobile store today, got a new sim...everything is working properly now.

Huh. I've never known T-Mobile to charge to replace a SIM card that needed replacing, whether due to its being outdated or simply worn out. Maybe I just got lucky.

last i went was because i needed a replacement sim cuz my phone wouldnt pick up 3g and called a rep and said he put a note on my account so i can run into a store and get a free sim
SMSC Update Error - Solved
I had the same problem - but found a way to solve it without replacing sim.
What you need to do is to insert the sim into an older phone and update message central number from there.
I fixed it using a nokia 3210 - after having tried using an n95 with no success.
While trying to figure out what was wrong i tested with another sim also - and when reading out the SMSC from the *#*#info#*#*-menu i found that the number is stored in some strangely obfuscated way.
Here is how it stores number for two of norways major operators:
Netcom: +4792001000 - shows as 06917429000100
Telenor: +4790002100 - shows as 06917409001200
What the first 4 digits are for, i'm not sure, perhaps a code for '+' but whats interesting is the last 10 digits - they are basically swapped around in pairs of two.
I tried inputting the digits for the other central in this manner, and sure enough - it saved ok!

grab another phone and put your SIM card in it
then try to send a SMS
see if that works properly or not.
if that works, then it might be a SNS setting issues
if the SIM card does not send SMS on another phone, then you'll need to swap your SIM card with a new one.

The relevant text is below. One thing I'd say is that the link is a bit vague on how to do the conversion. You need to put your SMSC number in the page, clear the rest of the info and press convert. You then need to ignore the numbers after 11.
For example, my vodafone +447785016005 goes to 0791447758100650110000910000AA00, which shortens to 079144775810065011. Go to the *#*#4636#*#* menu and put that in SMSC and hit update. Messages now send!!!. Hopefully I can save someone else the grief I've had all day...

Tmo Gtab 7.0+ WANT to keep but MUST return due to inadvertent calls to dead number

Greetings fellow G-tabbers,
I appreciate everyone's input here and am hoping to be a long-term member of this community.
I would love to keep this tablet but am thinking it's going to have to be returned before my 14 day window with T-Mobile is up.
My questions: Is it possible to set up some kind of workaround to be able to receive CONDITIONALLY FORWARDED calls via the G-Tab/T-Mobile phone number to my other T-Mobile phone (basically, set up conditional call forwarding)? According to T-Mobile they can't because the tablet plan has a code in the system blocking calls.
Or if that's not possible, is there some other way, perhaps spoofing my own cell phone number as my outbound text number instead of using the assigned tablet phone number?
I realize that there are 3rd party apps out there but I'd much rather use the native text messaging application and not a 3rd party app such as Google Voice, Line 2, etc.
Here's the background:
I am a headhunter for a Federal DoD contractor and as such, I review resumes on various job boards (i.e. Monster.com, etc). As a way to connecting with candidates (I know who they are but they do not know me yet), I send them a text message, email and then voicemail. When setting up my Data Plan, I learned T-Mobile scripted within the system "call block" or "voice barred" feature, Tier 3 tech support at Tmo is unable to set up conditional call forwarding.
As a result of this, should a candidate decide to call my text number they'll get a dead number message saying something to the effect that this phone line cannot take incoming calls.
So what happens is that the candidate things I am unreachable or worse yet that the text message was spam (unless they fully read their text and check their email account).

Im assuming you have a GT-P6200 since tmobiles GTab+ doesnt have phone abilities.
Tell them you dont want/need a tablet plan becuase YOU DONT HAVE A TABLET!
tell them it IS a smartphone, have them try to put you on a smartphone plan, thats
how most of ATT guys sneak by.
at least try to find a smartphone SIM with data/voice to see if it works without issues. It should.
last resort: "bribe" a young tmobile rep to spoof an IMEI to put you on smartphone plan.

I think other people here use smartphone sims with unlimited data on tmobile. Its do-able. Next time, a good rule is to always avoid telling your carrier how you will use your device because you know they think they know what is best.
Anyways spoofing an IMEI, means.. they need a smartphone IMEI in their "system", so a friendly helpful tmobile rep who doesnt care much about getting in trouble or knows his way around takes an IMEI from a never used phone like a demo model, you run an application that reports your IMEI the demo, etc. Its actually probably more involved than this. And Ive heard it may well be illegal, Class C felony. What you might want to ask them is if there is a way to just enter your device as a smartphone and not a tablet, but it is probably generated by IMEI.
PROTIP: if you do have 6200, it's good idea to make 2 backups of your /efs folder (if rooted).

Google Voice is not a 3rd party app, it will completely and natively integrate with your Android stock dialer. If you were on an iOS device it would be terribly clumsy, but not on Android.

There is no stock android dialer in Honeycomb as it was meant only for tablets and not phones. I thought I saw a thread somewhere in here of people using Google Voice with a third party app to make calls. I think you could also use the Goolge Voice number for texting as there were threads on how to do this in my phones forum when Google Voice first came out. I think Skype will also assign you a static phone number to use if you pay for the service. I would also search the other tabs forums to see if anyone in those has a mod for it to work as a phone off a sim card from a carrier. Personally I would trade it in for the Galaxy Note if I wanted to use it as a phone and tablet.
or check out GrooveIP in play store one of the more popular VOIP/SIP applications, has option for 3G, cant guarantee quality will be the same as regular voice, but Im sure its one of the top 3 out there.
After doing some Googleing and reading up on some GTab 10.1 threads it appears that Honeycomb 3.2 on a GSM tablet should be able to make calls if the carrier supports it. Which TMO doesn't. You could try getting a pre-paid sim card and dropping it in to see if it will work, maybe something like Virgin Mobile. There maybe something in the OS from TMO that may block other sims so not sure how that would work.
After thinking about it the tablet is more than likely locked to TMo and it has to be moded to use anohter carrier, like boost mobile. For phones its a complicated hack getting it on another network. I still think your better off getting the Galaxy Note but then you would have to pay for a second phone line and data plan to use both the tablet and your phone at the same time and then conditionally forward your calls as you suggested.

I'm not interested in using my tab to make calls; only to send texts via the native in-built messaging app. I don't want to use other Android apps, just the stock messaging. I am able to do this to great success on Sprint. Sprint is able to go into the backend system and apply conditional call forwarding. Not the case with Tmo.
My main purpose is to NOT miss calls from people who may decide to call via reply to text as that's what appears as my callback number when it's not.

Sorry to say, but TMO won't support this. They have silly notion that you should buy a separate phone from them if you want to make calls.
still not sure what device you have. this may be worth a shot, although I understand tmobile says its not possible, etc.

Hi,
Don't want/need to make calls. I only need for texting, however, if one of my candidate prospects (I am unknown to them at this point) attempts to call me via the link on their phone because of my text from the tablet, it'll ring to a dead number, the tablet number.
I ONLY want the calls to be conditionally call forwarded to my other Tmo cell phone which already has unlimited phone minutes.

Hi Chris,
The reason I don't want to use other apps is if/when we move to ICS some of those apps may not be compatible for some time until they upgrade. I was burned using a VOIP app (Line 2) which worked very well and suited my needs on my older Gingerbread Tab (HTC EVO View) and when I upgraded to HoneyComb I learned that Line2 won't and never will support HC and I now know that the EVO View tab will not be upgraded to ICS.
I don't want to go there anymore, it severely impacts my ability to get my work done. I'd much rather use the native messaging app. Also because it doesn't use any data to use the native app, if I use an app from the Play Market, I'm likely going to have to use up my data plan and then I am prone to crashing, etc. Unless I am missing something are there any other alternatives?

Two options:
(1) Sign up for GoogleVoice and port your number to that. This is very easy and will give you full control over where that phone call routes.
(2) Go get a straighttalk SIM ($15) and service ($45, for unlimited) and tell TMO they've lost your business.
Or, do both.

Does the the stock text messaging app allow group conversations with MMS (as opposed to sending a single SMS to each recipient)?
The XZ Premium appears to be using Android Messages as the stock SMS/MMS app and that app doesn't allow group MMS on my Xperia XZ for some reason. The setting doesn't even show up in the app's settings.

I hate it when people do this, but my solution is ALWAYS to install Textra. There are a lot of free options..

Stock text, phone, and sometime keyboard are many times useless. They only put them there out of necessity to make the phone work. They don't worry about the built in apps because they know many, if not most, users will replace them with something more to their liking from the play store, including a different launcher. I just wish they would allow us to DELETE the crap that we don't want that we will never use... disabling the stuff is not good enough. That is why I am looking to root.
Oreo has group message now.
It seems that group messaging got added to the stock app in an update at some point over the last few months. I didn't even realize as I've been using the excellent Textra messaging application. I don't have Oreo yet on my Premium from the UK (G8141).
It sounds like this isn't an issue anymore but just to clarify for you guys it's because of the firmware. I previously had the HK firmware, which had group messaging disabled in the android messages app (the option didn't appear). I flashed the CE1 firmware and group messaging options appeared in the android messages menu. Right now I know that the US,CE1, and FR firmware all have group messaging.
The only issue I've for the first few months aside from group messaging was I couldn't share news feed links or map locations on my XZ Premium. When I try to add a link to a message, it brings up a message that I must use stock messaging application. However, that is not the case now. Textra does it all.
I think what I said is wrong actually, because I seem to have lost the options for MMS in the app. So maybe it is carrier related, because when I first flashed the phone the options were there. It's weird because my wife has the phone with the US firmware and the MMS options have been there on hers but not on mine. It's only been about a day and the MMS options have disappeared for me.
One thing I noticed when I was messing around with the XZs and XZ1 is that the US firmware was the only one with group MMS sending enabled. With other countries, I could see the option until I stuck my sim card in. I was able to narrow it down to one .sin file with my XZ1. I think it was OEM-*.sin. So I could flash everything to a non US firmware but use the US OEM_*.sin file and get MMS with the fingerprint sensor. However, I was able to figure out a way to enable the fingerprint sensor on the US firmware by just using another country's system_*.sin and vendor_*.sin files.

After searching online a bit I saw that others ran into this issue and that it was related to the sim card, others have had success with contacting the carrier and getting them to solve it eventually. I am trying to decided what would annoy me more, having to flash my phone repeatedly with updates manually, or contact AT&T repeatedly until they can find a solution...

Still not seeing this on my USA hardware flashed with CE1 with an AT&T SIM. Like others have mentioned, the option was there before I put in my carrier's SIM -- now, it's gone.
I would really like this issue to be fixed. Such a shame, as Oreo has really beefed this phone up.
Didn't have it with 8.0 and got it with 8.1 Malasyia.

Again, pretty sure this is a carrier problem and will have to contact them. This isn't such a thing as USA hardware as there are only two models of this phone, single sim and dual sim. My wife has the dual sim with USA firmware and group messaging is working fine. I have a dual sim but with FR firmware and group messaging option goes away when I insert the sim card, and it wouldn't surprise me if I were to flash the US firmware and see the group messaging option until the sim card is inserted. I have found posts only where others have had to escalate their issue with AT&T tech support in order to get the issue fixed.

Sorry, getting confused with my Pixel 2, which I flashed 8.1. I meant to say, I didn't have Group Message on 7.1.1 but got it after flashing 8.0.

I would LOVE to simply have USA firmware, but I need the fingerprint scanner.
I assume AT&T had to do something on their end vs a simple setting that needs to inputted. Ugh.

Ya I agree that's why I won't use US firmware, but like I said that likely won't fix the problem. I will be contacting AT&T this week to see if I can get it resolved. There seems to be an issue with their provisioning for certain sim cards. Very annoying as these services/features are working fine for others.

Let me know what happens. We're both in the same boat it seems!
Something interesting I have found is that Textra works perfectly for group MMS (just tested), and I didn't adjust or alter any settings, etc. I don't like the idea of paying $3.49 for an app that should have worked out of the box, but I guess no one is really to fault here: We aren't using the proper fw for our region, and AT&T hasn't tested this software on their network; they obviously can't guarantee a feature or function will work.

One problem with using Textra is that I can't get notification badges working so there's no quick way to tell when you've got new messages. Sure, it'll be on the lock screen or in the notification drawer, but if you use the fingerprint scanner to log in, you bypass the lock screen and if you don't think to check the drawer, it can be quite a while before you notice.
This is driving my wife crazy.

No Incoming SMS or MMS on Verizon

Hey OnePlus fam,
I just thought I would put this out as PSA for anyone on Verizon and having issues with SMS or MMS, as there is little information out there on this for our specific phones.
If you are unable to send or receive any text messages it is most like that the "CDMA-Less" feature needs to be activated.
You can call Verizon and ask them to enable "CDMA-Less" to your account.

Been working perfect since.
Same here. I inserted my Verizon sim in the international version. Data at 50Mbps, Voice, Visual Voicemail and outgoing text messages worked. If it doesn't work for you, make sure you are using slot 1. It may matter. If you have a very old sim, you might need a new one.
I called Verizon and carefully explained that incoming sms was not functional as this was a next generation phone for a world where Verizon turns off their CDMA at the end of 2019 and SMS is routed over LTE. I instructed him to make sure "CDMA-less" was available both in the billing account and the network account. After a bit of digging he found the provisioning settings. Seconds after the phone was provisioned, sms started flooding in the stock message app. Also make sure IMS Basic Visual Voicemail is on your account if VM is giving you trouble. I use VZW Message+ (Verizon Messages) for sms as I can text from a PC also and it will restore previous sms.
By definition the phone uses VOLTE so there is no setting for HD Voice in the phone. That feature is required on your Verizon account but you would have to be switching from an ancient phone not to already have that. I cannot locate any option for Wifi calling and it does not work in airplane mode. I have a google voice number which allows Wifi calling. Interestingly it errors when the phone is in airplane mode but works when cell service is on. It reports "Wifi Call" and appears to use the stock dialer when initiated from the Voice app. Somehow Voice is even more tightly integrated with the stock dialer now than just trapping and routing international calls. This is a bug of sorts as my Moto phone on 8.0 could call in airplane mode with wifi on.
Google Duo appears to be integrated in the dialer but I haven't tried with my wife's Pixel to see if I can switch to Duo while on a regular voice call.
Bootloader unlock was simple: Tap Build # 6x, Developer Options - OEM unlocking, adb reboot recovery, fastboot oem unlock [This erases the phone]
The 7 Pro is an amazing device! Truly the most amazing. I'm really excited. The phone is super super slippery and a drop magnet. It does come with a TPU case.
I'm going to sell my kid's mint 5T and upgrade him too!
BT sucks worse than the Moto phone but I think that is an Android thing as my wife's pixel as issues to with her car. Contacts not syncing and calls not going through while connected to BT. Just have to do work arounds when I have some time.
Hoping video is fixed for the wide camera. They are amazing; but then, I'm coming from a Moto phone which has the worst cameras. Sony knows what they are doing.

I have verizon and have cdma-less provisioning done already. Have HD voice on the account as well. SMS works fine but I can only send MMS not receive them.
Ive tried moving sim card to other slot, tried reboot, tried factory reset, tried different apps...nothing.
The only time MMS fully works is when I am in safe mode. Anyone have any ideas on what it could be?

Try looking in permissions at what app has permissions.

Permissions were all good, sms/mms permission is in one.
I tried verizon app, MMS works, dont really like the app though, and the customization didnt help me like it enough to keep it.
Super weird that verizon messages work but not the stock app or the Mood SMS app.

I had to call Verizon 2 or 3 times for them to get it right
I downloaded a couple other SMS apps and they all work fine. So leads me to believe its just something weird with the stock app and with Mood SMS. I will switch to QKSMS for now and requested assistance from Mood SMS so they could take a look. Thanks all.
I'm going to guess MMS didn't work with that app while you were on wifi? Some apps don't know how to route MMS data properly when there both data and wifi available.
It's an option that has to be enabled on the account for Verizon customers, it's the cdma-less option. It took me a couple representatives til one of knew what I was talking about lol
I think his issue is slightly different as he can recieve sms but not mms and it varies on the app he's using.

No that I already checked. I still have not figured out why I cannot receive MMS on the stock app or on mood SMS. Mood had not replied to my email. I switched to qksms and have no issues anymore.
So ya if anyone else runs into something like I did, try different SMS apps
Yup, I learned this very quickly when I got the OnePlus 6t. Just getting them to understand that the phone was certified on VZW. Then 4 techs before one knew what to do. I think they now can address quickly even over chat.

If I get Verizon prepaid will they be able to do this? I had Verizon prepaid once in the past and customer service was much worse than regular Verizon wireless. I am pretty sure that mvnos can't do it but I'm hoping Verizon prepaid can.

Yeah, there's a lot more to this than enabling CDMA-less. Before about a month ago data/sms/MMS wasn't working on Android 10 based custom roms and MMS still doesn't work unless you use Messages+.
I get both fine I just have issues with them being received after the phone goes idle for a while. My issues are small stupid crap mile messenger not closing with home button all the time and and Gboard sometimes won't type into the field I'm in

SMS Delayed and Calls go Right to Voice Mail

Using the device on T-Mobile. Sometimes I'll just get a voice mail notification - without the phone ever ringing. Tested from a desk phone, and sure enough it goes right to voice mail without ever ringing. If I make a call outbound from the Zenfone 6, it will always work. Then I'm able to receive calls for an unknown amount of time. I can reboot and get calls after the reboot, but they will eventually randomly stop.
SMS also come though delayed by hours. For instance someone sends a SMS my way at 2pm, I'll get it at about 4pm. If I send a SMS out bound, I then instantly get all the inbound ones.
Anyone know if I need to whitelist something in battery optimization? So far the Zenfone isn't really good at being a phone. - great at everything else though.
Check your apn settings I think I had to update the default to whatever BYOD APN settings are for T-mobile see if it helps you
Also had this issue on T-Mobile. If APN settings don't fix it, I'd go to Auto-start Manager in Settings > Battery > PowerMaster and allow your messaging apps to run.
For me, I'd get SMS messages only when my screen was on, and some weren't received from contacts, like it shuts the apps off after not using them.

So I found that if I turn off WiFi calls come right through. I don't know what the fix is, but I guess that's my work around.

I've found the same to be true for me. Wi-Fi connection prevents calls from coming in. I can dial out just fine.
This is extremely strange since this phone is not even Wi-Fi calling certified and it's not even a feature. This has been my biggest issue with the phone so far because you never know if you miss a really important call.

I purchased a OnePlus 7T for this reason. Can't use this device anymore after getting flack at work for missing and oncall issue due to the phone not ringing because I left wifi on.

Asus denies the phone could be the problem (despite the phone obviously being the only variable). I replied to that thread anyway, with my experience of similar lost calls on a Moto x4 with Wi-Fi calling enabled. Maybe it'll give some engineer at Asus a push in the right direction...

I'm having the issue with T-Mobile 7T Pro, when I got the permanent unlock approval and switched to Mint Mobile sim is when calls went to voice mail, have you found a solution yet? Phone works fine if I use T-Mobile sim, but Mint Mobile sim in the 7T Pro is when the calls go to voice mail and text don't go out, if I put the Mint mobile sim into a Pixel XL all is fine. When I had to quit Mint Mobile becasue of this and go back to T-Mobile on prepaid again, all worked well.
The zenfone 6 is getting volte with the android 11 update so hopefully that fixes this issue
