EDIT: Sorry, title should be grey* spot
Hey guys, so I just noticed when I take a picture using the new camera or Instagram there's a grey spot in one corner. I tried wiping the lens to see if was dirty and nothing changes. Its actually darker on Instagram. I tried rebooting and nothing happened. Interestingly enough, it seems to disappear during video recording. Here's a sample when taking the picture. Its in the top left corner. I noticed this today and it had not occurred before today. I had my phone since launch. All camera options have the spot except video recording. anyone have ideas?
Also, I just checked snapchat and that has no grey spot.

It could be an issue with the sensor (dirt / damage).
Video recording uses a much lower resolution. A camera pic is 8 mpix. Video records at 1080 which is about 2 mpix... So this will only use a small (central) section of the sensor. . Which marries up with the fact the spot is in the edge.
You could try reducing photo resolution too to 1.9 mpix . I bet the spot is missing again
Also given its location, I would suspect any app that shoots 16:9 photos at almost any resolution would cut the spot out as it looks to be where the image sensor would "crop" to get a 6 mpx widescreen photo

Thanks for the response. Unfortunately, the spot is still there at 1.9 mp. I can try still wiping it down with a microfiber. Do you have any suggestions if it is indeed dirt? Snapchat does take fairly low res pics so it could still be that.
Odd.
If it is dirt, I've no recommendations. Sorry

And to conclude what rootSU said, if it is a spec of dust or damage, then your only option is getting it repaired or to RMA it. Software won't fix this issue.
Edit: damn you guys are fast

Maybe I'm wrong about 1.9 being central like video :/ I jus always assumed it would be.

Thanks guys. I'm just not sure how it would be dust on the sensor? How would it get in there since I have had no problems with it before.
It just can. All of this has happened before and all of this will happen again

I called up Google and was told that I should wait out a few updates to see if the issue is software related and if not I can RMA. I think I'll wait a few days lol
Oh and also, he told me that a couple of updates are coming out real soon. I asked him about 4.4.3 since I was already talking to him and he said he didn't hear much but it should be out really soon. Fairly vague, but I thought it was interesting he said a couple of updates. In either case, I don't think its a software issue since multiple apps have the spot.
Do you guys know anything that I can try though to rule out it being a software issue?

A thorough wipe and a bunch of pictures with different resolution settings. But honestly I think RMA is your best bet. I've read a few threads in the past about the same issue and they all got it RMAd.

I would have already told him I wanted an RMA. The only thing that im curious about is why it doesn't show up in video recording/snapchat. I know rootSU said that it was because of the difference in resolution, but I checked the resolution of snapchat and it was 1080p. Also, when I switched to 1.9 pixel image it was still there and I feel like that's already a very small resolution.

Your testing indicates that pictures taken with different resolutions still use the whole sensory field of view and that rootSU could have been mistaken.
Does Snapshat clip the pictures i.e. into a certain shape (Instagram does squares for example)? If it does that would explain why you can't see the grey spot. If it doesn't, then I really don't know.

Well instagram does clip pictures, and the spot does appear on instagram. It actually looks more prominent for some reason. or I could just be seeing things. I don't think snapchat clips. both video on instagram and and regular camera don't have the spot.

Same problem here as well with my new Nexus 5.Very annoying !! I noticed a dust spot in all my photos that seemed to develop in the last week.
I called Google's support line with the same problem. They are sending a replacement device within 48 hours. Very impressed.
But, I'm doubtful about LG's clean room for manufacturing.

Was it also visible in video recording? I think im going to factory reset the device to see if it goes away and if not im def getting a replacement.
Just curious what does Google or LG do when you rma or claim warrenty for this problem

I still stand by my theory. Actually I've just discovered the new camera no longer does 16:9. The old camera did 2mpix widescreen (16:9) so I assumed that the 1.9 mpix was the same which would cut the right and left edges off the sensor like the video does. Obviously because it's using 4:3 unlike video, it didn't prove my point and looked to disprove it but actually it doesn't.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
So, I'm not sure if this new finding supports your theory. But I went into the camera app info and was able to uninstall the update to bring back to the old camera. In the view finder the spot was gone but it still appeared in pictures. For the video though, it doesn't even appear when watching the recording. So I guess it cuts it off? Regardless I'm just going to factory reset and if its still there (which I think you're right and it will be) I'm calling back and asking for RMA.

I'm having the same issue, what gives?
Hi everyone. I was browsing autotrader.co.UK and noticed that the whites on the S6 aren't as pure as they are on the iPhone 6. I've read up about this and accepted that this is typical from Amoled displays but as I was observing I also noticed that (despite the S6 having a much higher resolution screen) the images on the webpage were not as high quality when comparing to the IP6 - they seem to be low resolution thumbnails. I tried Google Chrome and it didn't make a difference. Is this just a browser related issue? Any idea as to why this could be?
I've attached a couple of screen shots that will explain what I'm referring to (focus on the images of the cars).
Sent from my SM-G920F using XDA Premium HD app
Another example attached. This time I've post a side by side comparison with a HTC One M9. I thought it could be an android issue but clearly this is an S6 issue.
If you check the compared images on a desktop you'll notice a big difference in quality between the two images. For some reason the issue isn't as visible when viewing the images on this forum using my phone but there is definitely a noticeable difference when the S6 and iPhone 6/M9 are next to each other.
I'm surprised no one has anything to say.

So I've gone back to my iPhone 6 because of the above issue - it could be a serious one that at the moment doesn't appear to be a big deal to anyone - unless you know a solution that to the issue that you haven't shared?
I thought I'd leave the last message as hopefully someone will pick up on it and perhaps find a solution or at least raise it to Samsung's attention.
Enjoy your new phones all
That's very strange. Is it possible there is some sort of server side compression happening?
Have both. What you say is true.
did you try chrome ?
Sent from my SM-G920F using Tapatalk
Yes i want to know if you tried chrome as well... i do see what your talking about. But i always use chrome and do not get compression like that... but to me it sounds like you just don't like to try anything else and might be a apple fan boy? Enjoy your Apple locked expierence. You can. ... change your wall paper and that's it. Lol.
Honestly I tried almost every well known browser. That was my initial hunch as well. I tried Chrome, the Samsung default one, Firefox, Dolphin HD, Cheeter, and some others then gave up.
Definitely not a browser issue.
By the way I'd recommend downloading the attachments and viewing them properly as the previews don't show the issue.
Has to be some sort of compression issue - are Samsung doing this to improve the speed of their web browsing performance? Possibly.
Are you seeing this across the board on all websites or just Auto Trader? I'm a front-end developer and I know not all sites treat responsive design the same. It's possible that higher res (retina-ready) images are loading on iPhone and Android is left with the regular images.

Bingo! Just tried it with an LG G3 and the same issues exist! Could be a scaling issue? I'd urge you guys to check it with a side by side comparison if you ever get the opportunity...

Wrong with phones that have a QHD screen including all Samsung Galaxy S6s.
Got the same issue...
This issue started appearing for me just yesterday! So frustrating!! I got the phone on launch day (April 10th) and it has been fine until now. For me the low res issue affects Chrome, Instagram, Snapchat, and some of my other apps. Also some HD photos that I had downloaded sometime last month or so (when this issue was non-existent) are now a bit low res and it is really annoying.... However the stock browser app and Dolphin browser are fine... Idk what's going on. Were you able to find some sort of a solution?? Thanks.

It's not an actual "issue". The image looks low res because it has to be stretched more to fit on the QHD screen on than on a FHD screen and your eyes are picking up the extra "stretching", which makes the image looks worse. Your problem though sounds different.
HD pictures shouldn't be looking low res. Can you describe your issues in more detail? How sure are you that there was no stretching before? Did you change any settings? What apps does it look stretched in and under what conditions?
Okay yeah that makes sense. So I was looking at an HD picture on Instagram that I have seen plenty of times but when I looked at that same pic a few days ago some parts did not look as sharp as before. Now for me I always pay attention to detail when it comes to a photo so I know that there's something wrong if it doesn't look the same. So I then noticed this issue again when I was reading an article online and noticed that the pic just was not HD. Here is the pic in question when I viewed it on Chrome: http://i.imgur.com/wCfpXYz.jpg
Here is the same pic on the stock browser: http://i.imgur.com/GW1toTq.jpg
Now if you specifically pay attention to Aaron's face you can see that the one on Chrome is less sharp when compared to the stock. So I assumed that the problem was with my Chrome browser for some reason. Then I tested another website for a pic and this is how it looked like on the stock AND Chrome: http://i.imgur.com/p61eKxA.jpg here it is again but on Dolphin browser this time: http://i.imgur.com/uyB4X02.jpg If you focus on the word Billboard it looks a lot less sharp on Chrome and the stock browser. So I know that the problem is not specific to Chrome. Also on Friday of last week, I watched the 360 degrees experience Avengers video on my YouTube app and it was really sharp, crystal clear HD and now when I watch it, it looks like this: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B_1yTF9ELpYgdjUteV9lWTgxTTA/view?usp=sharing The settings on my YouTube app is 1080p so idk why it should all of a sudden be looking like that... When I shot a video on snapchat it looked pretty clear until I watched it back and the screen was a bit fuzzy... the pixelation seemed off. It doesn't matter if I'm viewing any of the above apps in low light or bright light, they still seem low res.
Finally, I don't think I changed any settings either!

That's always the main issue when using Amoled displays. It's just part of the technology unfortunately. They look great, but they are basically an organic technology that degrades over time. They can degrade unevenly depending on what you're viewing/doing as you have witnessed. Navigation bars and status bars are usually the first to be noticed. I usually disable mine and use gesture controls for this reason.
P.S - Get ready for all of the Samsung/Amoled fanatics that are going to tell you that it is impossible and that you're using your phone wrong. [emoji6]

Oled displays generally heal over time by themselves from burn-in if it's not too much marked, clearly if the fixed image pattern that caused it will no longer be displayed on the screen.
Many apps are available on Google Play that could help shortening this healing time, for example:

LCD burn in, or image retention does go away. Amoled however, does not. The only way to make it "go away" is to degrade the other pixels the same amount as the others. If the navigation bar for example is where the burn in is, the only way to fix it would be to let the screen stay on on the opposite pixels so that they will degrade to the same level as the others. Amoled technology is an organic technology, which means that each pixel is slowly dying each time the screen is on. If some pixels are used more than others they will die faster. It's just the science of the display.

Yeah... leaving static images on amoled on for extended periods of time is never a good idea.
Google should know better than this too. They should force the UI to fade to black when a video is playing in portrait.
My S8+ got burn in after about 2 months. It was also having other issues. But anyway Samsung replaced my display under warranty. Been a few months since and this one isn't having that issue.
just like mine
I got the same freaking thing same burn in as yours the line is where i watch the videos im surprised it also happened to you. The top line is more whiter.
Always on Display = Screen burn in
So just to be on the safe side, it would be better to disable the AOD (always on display)?
Anything black on your screen, helps decrease burn in.
Personally, I never use AOD. Maybe I am being over cautious?
duplicate post
Top is whiter bottom is darkish yellower
Same thing is happening to me and same circumstances with s8+. Occasionally youtube glitches and goes fullscreen in protrait making the whole screen black and keeping the video portrait which is cool but that rarely happens to me.

Agreed, ambient is 1000% better than aod.
AOD is DOA! ?

What are you guys smoking? It's not even a competition? Ambient is worse in every possible way. It is like an AOD but you have to interact with it before it shows
Jeez, this is some serious fanboy****. The Ambient display is just a cheap attempt to mimic an AOD without having to go through the technical barriers to create one.

It may be for you but it’s not for me. Most other OEMs offer one now so there is no need for me to consider OnePlus unless it really is not important to you. I was hoping they had added it back in (it was briefly available on the OP6)
I sometimes think the people defending its omission are OP sleepers. Honestly I get that for some people it is no big deal and I respect that but there are people like me who genuinely like and want an AOD.
I like OP phones and would actually like to try the 7 pro but in wireless charging and the AOD they have omitted 2 features that are important to me, could accept no wireless charging only but not both.

Thanks to this thread I just cancelled my reservation on local reseller... Thanks guys. I can't belive, there is no AOD.
You all know you are complaining about a feature that doesn't come standard on XDA right? 100% sure a developer will have it in due time. Even sure an app will show up as well. Even had it on the 6T, personally I found it highly annoying.

here is info from gsmarene
GPSYes, with dual-band A-GPS, GLONASS, BDS, GALILEO, SBAS
....nowadays, OLED screen = AOD support by hardware...
dont worry, guys
Not true. Or else you could use it on a galaxy s6, s5 etc. I haven't heard of a software only solution that is working as good as the the AOD from Samsung, Huawei etc. The display has to support it probably as well. Like a low refresh / low power mode. Whatever it is, they might have it as the display was made by Samsung. But maybe not, because 1+ didn't care.
My p20 pro has it always on and it barely consumes any battery juice. The magisk module for the 6t (which hasn't been updated in a long long time) ate nearly 15% in only 3 hours.
I never understood the ambient display. Might as well use the lockscreen, which has even more information available. And accessing the lockscreen by a "tap-to-wake" option was even on the LG g2. Nothing special, nothing outstanding about the ambient display. The whole point of the AOD is that you don't have to touch the phone to get all the info you need. Clock, missed calls or messages. Without having a disadvantage.
To me it looks like they couldn't get it done. They also canceled it for the op6, because their solution consumed way too much battery.
I know that it is not important to anyone here. But I would have loved to have one.

What you described is exactly what I want. I only want it to turn on the screen if a notification comes through, or if I pick up the phone. I don't need the screen on if the phone is just sitting there, what a waste of battery.

Gotcha. I run pixel rom on my 6t which has both AOD and ambient, prefer ambient personally but it's all subjective. Not having wireless charging is kind of a bummer I guess, I've never used it (well tried it on the LG G6 and it was terrible, guessing it's better now), but in the future when we see cars coming standard with wireless chargin mats in cubbies it would definitely be cool imho.

I don't understand why they don't put it,
I don't understand one plus, they want to challenge Samsung, pixel line etc with no ip certification, no AOD, no wireless charge, speed it's not all. I'm a note user I can stop use the style but I can't go back on others things like those.
So they'll never have Samsung or pixel users without that.
700 bucks to a one plus phone it's a lot.

Totally agree with this, ambient is just pointless, if I pick my phone up I want the full lock screen.

Been noticing that scrolling seems off. When scrolling through home pages, it sometimes takes 2 or 3 swipes to go to the next page. Anyone notice this?
Yes, same with swiping up on apps to close them. Seems you just need to swipe a little more aggressively/quickly though and all is well.
Yeah, I came from a 13 pro max and the scrolling was flawless. I feel like I have to keep my finger on the screen to finish a swipe on the pixel, it's pretty annoying.
Is it as noticable when you turn off Smooth Display?
I just tried it with smooth display off and Ii works perfectly. Wonder if it's a bug
This is what happens.

It's one of the first things I turn off as I prefer speed over style but you're right in that there needs to be a balance or a fix. With it on, the phone feels slow/laggy especially scrolling down webpages
It's probably enough for me to return the phone. I can't go back to 60hz lol, it hurts my eyes. I wonder if the 6pro has the same issues.
So another bug, wondering if I made the right decision ordering one of these yesterday!
All new handsets have bugs, although this seems to have more than normal. Hopefully this one will quickly be fixed with an update. There is no way I'm spending the best part of £900 on a phone to only have the screen usable on 60hz.

As it only has a 90hz screen it could be less prevalent.

Yeah. **** I'm really wondering if it was the right decision to get the 7 Pro instead of the non-pro..
Can't say I've noticed an issue. What refresh rate is being displayed when you scroll?
Went to my local Currys and played around on the demo unit there for around 20 minutes. Really like the feel of it, looking forward to getting mine now.
Anyway, for what it's worth I found absolutely no evidence of this issue with smooth display enabled. Everything worked fine on web pages and in the UI (settings menu for example) with the scrolling silky smooth and zero lags, stutters or delays in touch responses.

Definitely some weird scrolling issues. Maybe it's on an old fw or because it's on demo mode and processing etc is bumped up to max. I wonder if they're messing about with the touch boost to try and increase battery life?
Here is what I'm talking about.
