So basically, I bought my phone within the month the phone came out. I loved everything about it and I felt happy with my product.
Then later my phone starting powering off randomly and later I find out that my gps isn’t working. So I went to ATT and they replace my phone without a problem.
I finally get another captivate and the phone is working awesome, except for the GPS. Which really didn’t mind me anymore, because I always thought when froyo comes out everything will be working flawlessly. However I was terribly wrong.
When Froyo came out on February 24th 2011, I quickly updated my phone, little did I know it had a HUGE problem. It started powering off my phone again, I was a bit upset. I restored my phone to factory settings and still no luck. I then had no choice but to go back to ATT.
They told me many people are having the same issue. Froyo is the cause of the power off issue! I strongly suggest that nobody should update to froyo until its 100% fixed. They immediately gave me a new captivate, because you aren’t allowed to downgrade to 2.1.
I haven’t yet to test out the GPS, but hopefully its better then my other two. I’m also worried if my phone is even new because there’s this random Screen shot of the ATT store in my gallery. I kind of feel pretty bad going in there and asking for a new phone….. Anyways for those of you that having a working captivate, congrats.
p.s
samsung really fails somtimes.....
Same problem, I think, when 2.2 came out in Europe. It'll be fun to see if they get 2.2.1 out anytime soon.
The only way I've found to get reliable gps is to flash a custom rom.

Oh, wow, yeah it would be cool if they get 2.2.1 out fast.

I already did that, still did not help.
I returned my cap on Sunday for random reboot. Got another one and it got 0 satellites. I figured it was a fluke and went home to update to froyo. Still no lock. I called att to see about getting it replaced. After the phone call from hell (they wanted to troubleshoot data, even though i kept telling them that i had no data issues it was gps) I finally got to warranties. Phone arrives today. I am hoping this one works. I so am tired that they will not say it is a hardware issue. I love the fact that this thing is as hackable as it is. Holding out for the nexus s or galaxy s2.
In the midst of talking/venting at the tier2 rep, he did mention there were data issues with froyo. Wonder how long the fix will be. After seeing the samsung froyo getting pulled back so much for the other galaxy phones, I kinda don't blame the us carriers taking so long to get the stuff out. Then again that is a whole other argument.
And I'm very pleased with this phone,no issues at all like the store model had that I played with and it seems snappier than the store model ,where is o thought the store model had some lag ,my phone does not ,it has a ship date of 6/2 so don't know if that makes a difference,I changed my sim also ,the phone is absolutely one of the best looking devices out right now ,now if I can get root it will be perfect ,it is s-on so ill be patiently waiting for it but not in any rush
Just got mine today. I came from the MT4G that was rooted and already running sense 3.0
So the UI is nothing new to me, but the phone is sexay as hell! I love it. Very sleek. I love everything about it. From what I was told today when I bought it, the software update is supposed to be out in a week or so.

I flew too close to the sun! I'm an amateur just living off of the greatness that makes this site popular, but I've been fortunate over the years. It finally caught up with me. I have put many, many ROMs on my Nexus 7, Droid X and SG3 without any problems. I think I became over confident in my abilities. When I first started I would read through the whole process and research before leaping but this time I must have missed a step.
The steps to death of a phone
1. Had Pure Google AOSP on my phone for months with no problems (loved it)
2. Thought I had worked a a trade for a Galaxy Note II, so I put the newest Samsung Version back on the phone
3. Trade didn't work out, so I was just going to keep it and try a few other ROMs
4. Used my same 'ol procedures for trying to FLASH, didn't work because of the new Samsung Version
5. Played around awhile got in put CleanRom 6, but the cellphone would not not connect(Stuck in roaming) crap happens
6. Took it back to stock. dialed *2767*3855# everything worked fine
7. Decided to try a few other ROMs
8. This time I during flashing I the phone posted some message from Samsung saying the phone had a improper OS, contact Samsung. (can't remember exact message) This is were I probably screwed up. I got a little lazy and was playing around with my Note 10.1 while things were loading on my SG3. I had a few problems getting back to CWM. Finally, and I'm not sure how, I got back into recovery.
9. Loaded crDroid, got a little confused on which modem to pick, I think I picked XXELLA, everything else seemed straight forward.
10. Package seemed to install
11. On final reboot, the phone went off and never came back... No CWM, No Download mode, Won't charge, zero response to Odin
Oh well, crap happens! I knew it was always a risk. I will send it to MobileTechVideos and see if he can help me out.
EDIT: Oh, I just wanted to say to everyone, I love this site and the people on it.... I could never say that in the "Developer" section because I didn't have enough post. I don't know what drives you people but keep it up! And please don't take my screw up as a negative against any ROM. This is surely my fault for getting lazy. Works for thousands but fails for me? That is me not the package. Will I stop? NO! I'm getting ready to put something on my Nexus 7 as I type this.
SECOND EDIT: I think BattsNotlncld found the problem in two minutes. I don't think there is a crDroid package for SCH-1535. I was on another webpage looking for packages and ran across crDroid.
Easy to see where you messed up. I've never heard of crDroid or XXELLA but a quick google search brought me to the Galaxy S III I9300 forum (aka International version). Flashing a ROM made for the International version will surely give you a hard brick.
Go to www.mobiletechvideos.com
They are the best at fixing bricked phones. I bricked my SGS2 and they had it back to me good as new in 10 days.

Yeap, it looks like in my hast to download packages, I slipped into the I9300 world and left my SCH-1535 world. I just recreated my download chain and I clicked on a external link from another webpage to get to the crDroid download. Stupid hurts. I should have stopped when I saw the modem question, but I didn't.
damn this is tough to see. sorry to read about this.
after a mistake like this you will be more careful, bricked an HTC Droid Eris (my first smartphone) and also loaded a leaked firmware, which, stopped us from getting root, which came about a week after that new leaked firmware (lesson learned).
hope to see you back in action soon
thanks
Thanks for taking the time to post your follies! As a novice, I will remember your tale and read everything to the point of understanding before flashing anything.
I've been a long time user of the site & just signed up a few days ago lol I've seen this many times.
Yeah, international versions will brick your phone. That's why it's extremely hard to port an international rom
Good luck man! But like bigtom said, mobiletechvideos can fix almost anything.

It's very refreshing to see a user take responsibility and not whine and complain for their mistake. I commend you for that.
With that being said it sucks to see this happen to you. I have never heard of mobiletechvideos.com before this thread but did some looking and it's impressive what they promise. (damn good reviews to back it up too) Looks like it's $60 or so plus shipping to get it up and running again, sounds like a good deal to me.
Good luck, let us know what you do!

I bricked my SG3 just before Christmas and had it back from mobiletechvideos.com before New Years Eve. Pretty good for standard shipping and holiday season!
Mailing it off tomorrow! I bought a Note 2 until my SG3 gets fixed. I had to do something, because I don't have a home phone and my wife travels frequently. It is extremely hard to time an airport pickup without a cellphone. I love my SG3 but I really like the Note 2. I will be selling one in a few weeks. Which one? ....... we will see!

Some of the best lessons are the ones learned the hard way... but still sucks!
When I got my S3, coming from a HTC Incredible, the biggest concern I had was how big the phone was.... now I would totally consider the Note2. Post which way you decide!

You have any updates??
I feel your pain....hard bricked mine on Apr. 1, shipped it off to MTV on Apr. 3, and just found out today it'll be shipped back this week, so.... $95 lesson learned lol
I purchased a Pixel 2 for my wife that should be arriving tomorrow. I will not be unlocking the bootloader or rooting as it interferes with her work email and apps. I've been reading about the issues with Android 10 so I'm wondering if I should try to prevent the phone from updating to 10 during initial setup. Do you guys recommend updating to 10? What would you do if you had a new Pixel 2? Thanks.
Let it update, otherwise you're postponing the inevitable. Android 9 has it's problems for some too. I suppose you could wait for a few fixes to be rolled out before upgrading, but personally I don't regret the move to 10.
I went from 8 to 10. Skipped 9 altogether. I like the new notification features in 10 as well as a few other things. I haven't really had any issues with 10 other than lack of development for theming and a few other tweaks, but that is to be expected. I don't think you would regret updating... It's early though, but it will get better. Already better that what pie tried to be!
All that said, it is known that the signal is not as strong as with previous Android versions.. For me anyway. So if you live in a low signal area, it may be best to wait until at least the next security update.
I'm waiting for the October update
I've had a few random reboots ever since the 10 update.
Hope this gets fixed with the upcoming October release.
(Magisk might also have something to do with that but hey ... at least it's all dark within the phone )
So, I picked up a new unlocked 4a from BestBuy today. Before I set it up, I want to know if I should let the phone upgrade to Android 11 or try to keep it on 10? I know there have been some problems with 11. What's the opinion on this?

My opinion is to wait for the November or December update and then upgrade to Android 11.
I'm still on Android 10

No issues with A11; Oct update smoothed out a few rough edges that weren't that jagged to begin with. Every update brings drama from the fringes. Gotta decide what camp you fall into.
Are there any Android Auto issues with the current version of 11? I think there were some at one point. BTW, I'm upgrading from an OG Pixel XL which is still going strong.
Weird mine came with 11 out of the box.

I'm based in USA although an expat. I bought mine from Best Buy today.
Just my 2 cents. I just got my 4a yesterday and it came with 10, i updated to 11 during setup. I have ZERO issues. I was actually a little worried reading stories about issues, but i don't have a single issue.

Of course you didn't. For every negative report there are vastly larger numbers of perfectly happy users. Widespread issues draw a huge response over multiple boards that easily stand out from run-of-the-mill grumbling.

Plus if you DO have problems after "use 10 for a bit, install 11" then you'll probably end up factory resetting and doing all your reinstallation, config again.
(I recall from back when i could be bothered fiddling with cyanogenmod that nobody was interested in bug reports if you did a "dirty flash" - you had to do a factory reset first as it cured all sorts of problems. i wonder if google doesn't test stuff properly and you end up in the same situation and that's why factory resetting fixes so many problems).
The devices came with 10/11 based basically of release date in your state/region you live. I for example live in Italy and I bought mine from Google directly. It arrived 8 Oct with already 11 installed and with Oct security patch. No issue here with 11, as the major part of the other people. Let's say that's generally is expected to have some problems when there is a major release come out, as with any other software piece, not only android, but generally a couple of update fix all. And it seems so with Google security patch too.
I've decided to go ahead and update to 11. I assume that the pending update is for the Oct release,, but the notification doesn't show which release it is, only that it's for v11. I don't really want to factory reset before the update. Does anybody think it's a good idea to do a reset first?

On Android 11 because phone shipped with it .
Should be no need to reset first.
No touch screen issues with Spigen protector.
Android auto works fine with the assistant lagging from time to time. However that could have been due to poor service....

It's best to factory reset AFTER updating.
Also I'm fairly sure by now every region would have the October security update.
I did the update this afternoon. The update was for the September release, but then there was a 2nd update which brought it up to October. The phone seems to be running well after the updates. It seems a little zippier than before.
