Switch to unbranded firmware in order to upgrade from Nougat with OTA? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S8+ Questions & Answers

For various reasons I'm back using this S8+, and it's still pretty good, but it's still running Android 7.
I'm in the EU so OTA updates don't work.
Can I switch from an AT&T firmware to an unbranded one and thereby upgrade to Android 9 using OTA? If this is possible, can someone explain in simple terms how to do it?

No OTA Updates

I just took delivery on a SM_P905V, what a beautiful piece of equipment.
It was used in is loaded with Android 4.2.2. When I go to update software, it says its unavailable.
How do I get an OTA update?
Edit: Samsung site had the OT1 Lollypop 5.0.1. Now I wonder if they will update to Marshmellow?
Running great; and I couldn''t be much happier.
I suggest you use 'odin method' because its really fast but if you are not experienced with that method then I suggest you use samsung kies3 software on windows to update it. As for ota method, It varies region to region if new software isn't released in your region then use these alternative methods. Thank you , hope it helps
Hm, latest version for the P905V is P905VVRUBOH1/P905VVZWBOH1
Was it a new device or used?
You can use ODIN to flash the latest firmware manually. You can grab the newest firmware version to flash off Sammobile.

What is the process for Android Updates?

Hey guys. I was wondering, what is the process for android firmware updates? By this I mean, when I owned an iPhone (any model) after I updated the firmware there seemed to be remnants of the old firmware version and it would cause issues through the phone, at which point I would have to go on my computer, restore to the newest firmware essentially formatting the phone and re-uploading the new firmware on the phone. After that all was fine. Is this necessary on android in order to get a new, clean version of the firmware on the phone or does the update process do this throughout the installation? I haven't had any issues yet with the newest AT&T Nougat update, but I was just thinking about this and figured I'd ask before anything did happen, if it's like my old iPhones...
BTW, I'm on AT&T Samsung Galaxy S7 with Nougat 7.0

How to manually upgrade to latest version of Nougat?

I had received the update to Nougat via OTA on my Honor 8 early February. I, however, had to rollback to Marshmallow within a week or so as I had extremely poor battery life after the update. The rollback package on the Official Honor (US) Website didn't work for me. So I had used firmware package to switch back to Marshmallow. The current model number is FRD-L04 and the build number is FRD-C567B122.
I'm not sure if I'd receive future updates via OTA. I'm wondering if there is any patch introduced after the original update to Nougat & EMUI 5.0 and whether I should try manually upgrading again? My phone isn't rooted; could you provide any steps that would help me try a manual upgrade?
Thanks.

US Galaxy S8+ OTA software update not working / alternative way. SOLVED

What I want to do: I was trying to OTA update my phone software to the latest, but it seems I am behind on many updates. On the AT&T website, I saw that I need the previous updates installed first, in order to get the latest ones. I have to go in order.
Problem: Everytime I try to do a software update from the settings, it says “Current software is up to date.” It’s been saying that for over a year now. I can’t even get the updates from last year.
So is there a way I can flash one of the stock firmware updates from last year on to my phone with Odin and see if it will fix the ‘over the air’ updates? Or can I just skip to the most recent firmware and flash that one.
By the way, I have never done anything like this to my phone before, so I am a bit nervous, but I want to get this problem fixed so I would love if someone helped me out. I did see some articles online about flashing stock firmwares, that’s how I learned about Odin.
If this is doable, can someone please link me to a thorough tutorial on this process? If it isn’t, can you guys recommend another way of getting to the latest 8.0 stock firmware?
My phone right now:
Galaxy S8 plus (AT&T)
Model#: SM-G955U
Android version: 7.0
Baseband version: G955USQS1AQF7
Android security patch level: June 1, 2017

If you are using the AT&T S8+ outside of the USA, you will not get any OTA updates due to AT&T update policy. What you want to do is flash the Unlocked firmware and you will be good. Search for carrier switching thread and follow it.

Thanks for responding!
I managed to flash an older firmware from 4 months ago and I was able to OTA update to the recent one. https://forum.xda-developers.com/at...lternative-t3844887/post77673505#post77673505

Drawbacks to manual update?

Today I noticed that OnePlus has the 9.5.7 update on their site, and I was curious if there any drawbacks to using that instead of waiting for the OTA. For context, I keep my phone stock unrooted with the T-Mobile firmware so I'm mostly concerned about being able to get future T-Mobile OTAs. Are there any reasons I should avoid applying the update before the OTA comes?
This may be a moot point, since the T-Mobile firmware doesn't have the easy button to install a local update and I'm too lazy for ADB and all that.

My guess is that you should never simply flash an international OTA over a stock TMo OP7p... Otherwise, we probably wouldn't see all the threads in XDA about converting a TMo OP7p to the unlocked OP7p!
