US Galaxy S8+ OTA software update not working / alternative way. SOLVED - Samsung Galaxy S8+ Questions & Answers

What I want to do: I was trying to OTA update my phone software to the latest, but it seems I am behind on many updates. On the AT&T website, I saw that I need the previous updates installed first, in order to get the latest ones. I have to go in order.
Problem: Everytime I try to do a software update from the settings, it says “Current software is up to date.” It’s been saying that for over a year now. I can’t even get the updates from last year.
So is there a way I can flash one of the stock firmware updates from last year on to my phone with Odin and see if it will fix the ‘over the air’ updates? Or can I just skip to the most recent firmware and flash that one.
By the way, I have never done anything like this to my phone before, so I am a bit nervous, but I want to get this problem fixed so I would love if someone helped me out. I did see some articles online about flashing stock firmwares, that’s how I learned about Odin.
If this is doable, can someone please link me to a thorough tutorial on this process? If it isn’t, can you guys recommend another way of getting to the latest 8.0 stock firmware?
My phone right now:
Galaxy S8 plus (AT&T)
Model#: SM-G955U
Android version: 7.0
Baseband version: G955USQS1AQF7
Android security patch level: June 1, 2017
Kernel version: 4.4.16-11449429

If you are using the AT&T S8+ outside of the USA, you will not get any OTA updates due to AT&T update policy. What you want to do is flash the Unlocked firmware and you will be good. Search for carrier switching thread and follow it.

Thanks for responding!
I managed to flash an older firmware from 4 months ago and I was able to OTA update to the recent one. https://forum.xda-developers.com/at...lternative-t3844887/post77673505#post77673505

[Q] Galaxy Tab GT-P6210 Firmware Update?

Turned on my tab this morning before work and after a few minutes a pop up displayed a message indicating a firmware update was available. Didn't do anything 'cause I'm rooted and customized and wasn't sure CWM would remain to get me back to where I was. Looked here expecting to see everyone talking about it and disecting it and am suprised to see nothing. Maybe this is old news and I missed it? I keep this site up on a browser tab 100% but it is still possible. I searched and went back a few and didn't see anything. Anyone else getting this?
i saw the update late last night, and tried to do it, but it kept giving errors when i tried to install it both from kies and ota. My firmware wasnt listed in the stock firmware list so i used odin to put in stock firmware, amd now the update isnt showing.
The update was 150mb and said something about updating the market.
Heres hoping i didnt delay ics for myself
On my end both kies and the built in updater are telling me there is no update so maybe something strange happened on their end? Or maybe they are getting ready to release it
150MB? doesnt sound like ICS. I would expect it to weigh in over 400MB. Hopefully Im wrong. Maybe its some "prep" update to fix someting for the coming ICS.
What build number are you on? The latest for the P6210 is LA3. Since you can't update with a custom recovery in place you may be behind a version or two and thats why Kies is telling you an update is available. To get any update, including ICS, you will have to put the stock recovery back, this is all covered in Gary's post for rooting and installing CWM Recovery. No device I know of will accept a carriers or manufacturers update with a custom recovery in place.
My GT-P6210 is stock, and neither Kies nor the device shows a firmware update. Kies says current firmware is PDA:LA3/CSC:LA3 (XAR).
I'm not sure what firmware I was last night. I did a search for the firmware version it said I had, but I was only able to find one or two references to it.
I am currently on LA3 and not seeing any updates available.
Yeah, I feel like an idiot. I upgraded to LA3, couldn't use Gary's kernel (and I had to have it for my project) so I downgraded with my nandroid. I used Kies to get the upgrade, was not prompted, and forgot about it. So...sorry, fellas! False alarm. Feel free to ignore my future outbursts.
The P6210 I purchased earlier this week came with LB2. Is this newer or older than LA3?
LA3 is the third firmware build in Jan 2012. LB2 would be the second build in Feb of 2012 (so LB2 would be newer.)

I supposed it is not possible to extract the ROM file out of the tablet, as I didn't get any response here.
Could LB2 be for Canada only (since ikeny's P6210 was bought there)? Would that explain why U.S. customers aren't seeing it as an available update?

Could be. But interestingly, there is no "English (Canada)" or "French (Canada)" in the language selection. Hopefully it's not any hardware differences.
[Update] In the other thread about the IR port, it's been pointed out that the Canadian version does not include the IR port. I don't get Samsung, it's like they think the fragmentation problem is not bad enough (GTab 7, 7.7, 8.9, 10.1, 7.0+... ), they want to introduce more different variants (P6200, P6210; now P6210 with IR and without IR). No wonder why it is taking so long to release ICS for all these devices !!!

Kies wont' display my firmware version, which is annoying. Can I find out from the device itself? Navigating to About Device shows no "firmware" but mentions "Kernel Version: 2.6.36-P6210UEKJC-CL567728 [email protected] #3" with "Build Number: HTJ85B.UEKJC P6210UEKJC". What the <bleep> does *that* mean??

KJC:
K == 2011 (K is 2011, L is 2012, M will likely be 2013)
J == October (10th letter of the alphabet, 10th month of the year..)
C == 12th revision (1,2,3,...8,9,A,B,C,D)
hmmm, not as recent as LB2 then
I guess I could always take it to an authorised service centre for an official firmware upgrade...
A couple of quick questions:
1). My GT7+ build number is P6210UELA1 and it's rooted with Gary's method. Will the firmware update remove the root?
2). What does this firmware fixed? The only problem I have are:
- Lag after using the device for certain time (moving screen, etc.)
- Apps that are tablet-optimized is not shown as such (Mint, TripAdvisor) and shown in "phone" mode.
1. AFAIK, none of garyd's root options are compatible with standard firmware updates. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.
In order to upgrade your firmware, you'd need to restore your tablet to stock first and then upgrade to the latest firmware.
2. AFAIK, the issues you are experiencing will not be remedied by updating the firmware.
Thanks for the information. Do you know if I can re-root once I downloaded the latest firmware? I.e. download latest firmware, lose root, with new firmware re-root.

Yes.
Before I recently switched to an older firmware (so that I could use garyd's custom kernel), I had updated to the latest LA3 and rooted using p6210_CWMR_20120107.zip from [GT-P6210][CWMRecovery][ROOT] ClockworkMod Recovery and Root (07-Jan-2012). My tablet was running fine.

AT&T OTA Issues

Hello there.
I purchased my G4 in June or so of last year, and can't seem to get it to work with OTA updates. Phone is currently on 5.1, Kernal 3.19.49, Build LMY47D, Software version H81010e, Security software version MDF v1.1 Release 4. I have never attempted to flash or modify the phone, so it's been bone stock since the day I bought it.
I was out of the country and away from OTA updates from October 2015-March 2016, and since returning I havn't been able to get OTA to register an update is available using either the "Check for Updates" in Android, or LG Bridge on Windows. I didn't really put too much thought into it because of all the issues MM has/had, but now that Wi-Fi calling is available I'd really like to be able to update.
What would my best options be for getting the phone current and up to date with AT&T? I'd really like to avoid dealing with their repair services unless there is a good reason to go that route.
Thanks!
Update
Just in case someone finds this down the road with a similar problem, here's what I did.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/att-g4/general/att-h810-to-stock-guide-tot-method-t3248532
I followed that guide and manually updated from software version H81010e to software version H81010o. As soon as the software was updated, I checked for updates in settings as per usual and it immediately recognized and downloaded the OTA update from AT&T. Seems getting behind on software updates while out of country was preventing me from downloading new versions of Android.
Hey

Manually updating to Oreo

Hi.
I have a G955U Galaxy S8+ AT&T Factory Unlocked on Android 7.0
Baseband Version: G955USQU1AQD9
Android Security Patch Level - April 1, 2017
I no longer live in the US, and currently in the Philippines. Phone works great and the signal is too and all, but I cannot get OTA updates.
Can I just download the firmware file in this thread and flash straight through ODIN, or do I need to follow another guide?
Thanks in advance
You can, however there are specific sequences to follow, so you have to update in firmware released order.
I encountered the same problem so I downloaded odin that worked for Nougat and loaded all version to BRB1 I think it is and then went to Oreo. Currently on CRC5.
Another note, when you are about to hit Oreo you will need to download the odin that works for Oreo. It can be found in the CRC5 thread.
Happy Updating

Is this really necessary?
I want to update to Oreo as well but since I'm AT&T unlocked and not currently using AT&T network I'm stuck in the June software update so I'll have to flash like 7-8 firmware updates and each one being about 2-3 GB to download.
Also, is there any stock Samsung firmware I can download so I can avoid having to manually flash every software update? Or am I just stuck with the AT&T firmware?
Thanks in advance.
I'm also having this problem. Need to flash the updates through ODIN but I can't find every single stock file leading up to BR9 on this site. Do I really have flash them all? Or is there another way?

You can Odin flash CRG3 and the next OTA should be CRHI, so once you go thru settings, check for updates it should want to go to CRHI. And then you should be in the Update path to receive OTA's automatically

Thanks, so is it okay to flash it with the latest version of Odin? Also, do you mind linking me with an up to date / reliable tutorial on this? This is my first time attempting to do something like this.
One more thing, on Sammobile, there is only one firmware available for at&t, and it's the oldest one.

Okay, and is it okay if I flash from a firmware from May 2018? It's about 4 months old. Would I be able to OTA update from there on? Also, what is AT&T userdata? Yes you can use this firmware and start to receive updates, User data I'm not 100% sure but I think its supposed to flash your data so you wont have to reinstall everything but I heard it dosent work for At&t it will still do a complete wipe before install.
