I just took a gamble and canceled my Verizon account and switched to AT&T just to get the Nexus 5. I must say I do not miss the S4 one bit. Google made it so easy to root and unlock the bootloader. The phone is incredibly fast! I like how its simple to use. An example is the camera. You open it and shoot pictures. Samsung camera had so many different features that just wanted needed and probably bogged down the phone.
Now that I have my phone setup I just wanted to see if theres anything you guys recommend. I am rooted with the bootloader unlocked but I kept the stock rom. With the stock rom I got Gravity box to let me customize the rom to my liking. I also got greenify(donate version).
Is there anything in particular you guys recommend?
Heres a list of apps Im using.
Weather:1Weather
Launcher:Nova Launcher
File Browser:Solid Explorer
Backup:Titanium Backup
Power Toggles
Do you guys recommend anything else useful or cool? Am I wrong for not wanting to do roms? I just want the most stable I can get. Ive noticed in the past that once you start romming that things become unstable.

There's nothing wrong with flashing a ROM. Makes the phone far more customizable and in most cases, improves performance. If you don't like it just revert back.
A root app I would recommend is 'Greenify'. Some people believe it is useless, however on my old single core phone, it was quite dramatic. So you might as well use it.

Yea i got the donate version of that. Mainly because one night i charged phone to 100% and unplugged it. In the morning it was at 75% I was shocked. I put greenify on there and did the same thing. What a difference. Work up with 97% battery.
Congrats I did the same but went with tmo about 9 months ago. So happy!
Check out xposed and the module gravity box. It's all I run. It's all you need to run (imo).... Root required but I use stock Google rom with stock kernel. No need for custom kernels or roms (imo)
Fwiw I don't use anything else. No need to greenify anything (again imo)
Nexus5
I feel as if my phone isn't as snappy as it was before I rooted it. I'm running .11 with Renovate Ice and a few other magisk modules
I bet its the magisk modules. They slow you down quite a lot depending on the size of them.
nothing here, vanced + viper
yes, i have always feel that rooting is slowing device. From OP 5, i use vanilla no root or else.

Why would you feel that? Root is just a change to system rights. Root in itself doesn't slow the phone down. Mods made under root (such as Magisk modules) is another story.
Any number or reasons for a device to run the way it does. But folks suddenly start blaming "root" without any specific evidence.
To the top poster, it would seem disabling the modules would be an easy way to test the theory.

Magisk requires a daemon to run 24/7 it also hooks into logd process
So it is possible
Never noticed any slowness on my GM 2017! Rooted since day one...
I've come to that conclusion nearly 4 years ago, back in the days of Xposed.
I believe that altering system files in any way will have some effects on running speed and functionality in general.
Stock ATW.
I'm so confused.
Hey guys im considering rooting my op6.. i was wondering how stable rooting is now? Ive rooted my previous phones (nexus 5,5x and 6p) but they would end up breaking, bricking, dying at >30% battery or all sorts of other BS... i know that those phones were known for having serious problems though and they were giving refunds or something a while back for them or something. Does anyone have any bs like this now? im not sure how much rooting has changed in the past 2 or 3 years.
also my main reason for rooting is so i can use v4a, can i use this without root these days and also ive heard that its had problems functioning on oneplus phones so is it working good?
and is there any other magisk mods that are worth getting?
is substratum stable now or does it still break all the time with updates and just at random times?
thanks guys

I think that it is not root itself that leads to instability, it is what you do with it. If you start to use its power to mess with things you probably should not mess with - it will give you problems. Like I wouldn't recommend getting one of the battery-increasing, governor-modifying apps. In my experience my battery would always either stay the same or get worse. I tried updating adreno driver (for whatever reason) using a magisk module - got what I deserved - black screen. So I would recommended to get root, and just do what you need to do and then don't mess with it anymore.
I also had Nexus 6P and, unfortunately, it was just a poorly designed phone. Nothing to do with root
I do not know what v4a and substratum are, so hopefully someone will come in to clear things up
No, V4A isn't available without root. For substratum, I haven't had any problems with it. If I did, it's mostly on the theme side, not on substratum itself. However, I've moved from substratum to Swift Installer just because of how much simpler it is.
For root, utilize it only when you need it, and use it as minimal as possible especially if the phone you are going to root is your daily driver. Do not use any modifications that promise better performance or battery life. You are already using OnePlus 6, you won't need any of those.
Was curious what builds/ mods work best on these. Im Waiting on my unlock token but the only I need doordash and Uber to work and mostly wanted to get v4A back on a device and keep access to 5g. I've read over a lot but this is my first unlocked bootloader In a few years. If you have a favorite setup and are willing to share I'd love to hear,
Hey Ry4n,
Doubt this is what you are looking for, but so far I am sticking with stock OOS but with magisk installed and assorted modules such as the debloat module, busybox, and liboemcrypto. The reason for this is because so far this is not a very flashing-friendly device, without a real TWRP out for safety. I have tried EvolutionX which is really nice and I've loved it for a while, expecially on my older OnePlus devices, but it is not able to fully utilize the device's capabilities. Don't get me wrong, it is daily driver material and I do appreciate greatly the work that went into it and continually goes into it, but for my personal preferences unless there is a rom that is fully working with only minor issues (by my standards) I am not too keen on sticking with it; I love OOS cam and the quality with things like snapchat, and the speed of unlocking. Both seem small but because I interface with so many small things they become big things for me if that makes any sense. If you do try other roms though, I have found that it is not easy to get back to stock if you change your mind. EvoX, Havoc, Color OS, and maybe PA are your only options for daily driving for most people afaik so if you really wanna spend time with the device then you can try them out, in that order. Feel free to correct me if I am wrong though.
I dont know why you say its not a flash friendly device. I got the LE2110 Chinese model, and ive flashed every ROM available for this device, I had every problem possible happen(due to my choices) typing wrong codes or flashing wrong model software. EDL bootloop all kinds of ****.
This devices is amazing for flashing, just must follow directions exactly. Most roms you must flash copy-partitions first.
I would stock OOS with magisk runs the best for me as far gaming, cause I play PuBG Mobile heavy, but the latest rom available, HaVoC is ****ing sick. I would go with that one..
Furthermore, is ROMing still a thing? I used to stay up late installing Nexus Roms and Paranoid Android and stuff like that.
Well, I was in the same boat as you. Coming from US Snapdragon Samsung's that cannot be unlocked easily.
My Pixel 6a is rooted and running MKVs kernel, AOSP Mods, LSPosed, Xprivacy. The answer is really up to preference.
Until recently Safetynet was something that can be passed, now although Google Wallet works, one of my banking apps does not allow me to login so I have to use their website.
Also ~monthly OTAs will need to be manually flashed on a computer (PixelFlasher seems to be most convenient for this).
Look up the above apps and see their features and decide if it's for you.
The theming and customizations with AOSP Mods has kept me in (holding the power button shortcut for flashlight while the screen is off and status bar tweaks have made it hard to let up for me!).
Rooting is a must for MVK kernel alone. Phone runs better and cooler (uv). Aside from that I disabled the navbar pill, which was driving me insane on stock. Also AdAway module and ACC to limit charge to 85%.
I personally won't bother with a custom ROM because the phone isn't EOL, and runs stock. If this has Oxygen or another skin I'd change.
I root to use Titanium Backup. Google cloud backup is decent enough but not all user settings get saved and I hate reconfiguring apps

Wait, TiBu still works? I thought that was long dead and gone.
I'm in the same boat as y'all. I've been out of the game since my Nexus 5x, so I'm very behind.
Quick question, hopefully you can steer me in the right direction. I'm coming from a OnePlus, and I loved Oxygen OS. I absolutely hate the pixel QS layout - is it possible to get the look of my OnePlus on my 6a if I rooted it?
The last phone I rooted was N6P and I had always rooted my phone for the customization, mostly kernel, but stopped since Pixel 3a (my last phone) since I didn't have the time and energy to deal with all the huddles (I want GPay and all my bank and need the security features) and the battery was good enough.
I don't plan to root 6a.
I started down the rooting rabbit hole with a Galaxy exhibit 4g. That phone was one that required many apps to be installed in the (minimal) ROM. I rooted so i could store apps on the SD card. I rooted a bunch of phones, but got away from it when kit kat came out, as things were getting complicated and memory wasn't really an issue, anymore. I really liked some of the roms i used were very nice. The last rooted phone i had was a Nexus 5, which is still my spare and I'll prolly take with me to India, this fall. I still use the Boötes ringtone i got in a gapps pack. Lately, I've been happy with stock using Nova launcher. I'm not a power user, though.

Lol this is exactly the reason I was considering rooting, to get rid of the navbar. What in the actual hell is the point of the pill especially, but the buttons as well, other than causing burn-in. Simply moronic.

Are you still on A12, or have you updated to A13? If so, was it a huge stability & usability improvement?
I have no idea how this reply arrived to this thread and to your comment. It was supposed to be a reply to this post, I have never seen anything like this happen before. Apologies!

I use Nova launcher, which allows me to use nav bar or gestures. I use the nav bar, but i have it disappear when i don't need it. Prevents any kind of burn in.
No intention for 'rooting', especially because I simply don't have the energy for all that anymore. I bought a Pixel with the intention of being able to unlock bootloader and install a more privacy oriented version than stock. Initially was intending to use it with GSI (generic system image) until LineageOS become available, but then learned about GrapheneOS and went with that. Very happy with the result.
I was a 'noob-rooter' back when I bought my first un-lockable phone, the Moto G5 Plus with A7/8. Great lil phone to this day even! Then made a mistake after buying a G7 cuz that was when google started this dual partition (slot) crap which killed TWRP more the most part. Bein' the noob I was, I had assumed no twrp meant no root...smh So after A10 + 6 mo., I said I'd spring for a Pixel and their unlock/root-friendly rep. Got a 4a and found out there is 'life after twrp' lol
My main reason for rooting AND kernel-ing is muuch better battery life by better control of apps, the OS and most google (aka GMS). App are mainly magisk mods and apps like Swift Backup, Naptime for taming gms and TONS doze settings in gen., Battery Guru, AOSP Mods (awesome), Nova Launcher and 3C toolbox for nerding out...lol

user settings backups usually cause app force closes in my experience.
No face unlock
Face Unlock works with root. If latest A13 you need to download the latest version from post 20 https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/11-universalauth-face-unlock-for-all-roms.4419343/
