No MMS on brand new Pixel 3a - Google Pixel 3a Questions & Answers

I got a new 3a last week to replace my Pixel XL. Transferred all my apps and settings (strangely WhatsApp settings did not transfer), configured my APN for Consumer Cellular (ATT) and everything seemed fine until someone sent me a picture. Instead of the picture, I got a round icon with a spinning ring inside. It just sits there until I delete the message. I can send a single picture to my wife's 3a (we're both using Google Messages) but can't receive a picture or an MMS (i.e., multi-recipient) text. Our settings are all the same and hers works just fine. I did notice that my Messages up is a newer version than hers. I tried Textra and that didn't work either. That would imply something wrong with my MMS or APN settings but they are identical to my wife's 3a and to the Pixel XL I just migrated from. I did a chat with Consumer Cellular and they said both lines are configured the same on their end. I have also posted on the Google Messages support site but no responses so far. Any ideas? I like this phone but I won't keep it if I can't get MMS to work.

Turns out auto-correct changed "mms" to "MMS" when I entered the APN type. Once I changed it back to lower case, it worked fine.

[Q] Tricky issues receiving MMS

I'm going nuts trying to figure out how to fix my MMS issues — maybe you guys can help. I have an unrooted N5 running 4.4.4 that is inconsistently receiving MMS messages (both photos and group texts). I'm currently using StraightTalk, though I was having the same issue with Cricket.
My APN settings are correct (from what I can figure), and sometimes I receive incoming MMS. I currently have Textra and GoSMS installed as my texting apps, with GoSMS currently as my default. Occasionally I'll receive an error in GoSMS that an MMS message was unable to be downloaded, and try as I may, I can never get the app to download and display it. However, if I open up Textra, the message will have come through there with no problem. So basically, unless I have 2 apps gathering MMS, I'll miss half of them. I only installed GoSMS after seeing it as a suggestion/solution in another forum - this was happening before I both installed. I was originally using Hangouts for SMS/MMS, which was having the same problem (and why I initially DL'd Textra).
I occasionally have issues sending out an MMS. It's a less frequent occurrence than the issues receiving, though it does happen.
I am thinking that if this was a network issue, the MMS wouldn't come through to my phone at all, so I've stopped trying to mess with my APN. Does anyone have any ideas on how to solve this?
I have Straight Talk too and been having issues with MMS i'm using 8sms. I have the old 3g sims card. what about you ?

I just got my SIM card last month, so I'm pretty sure it's the new one.

I'm currently having the same issue with a non rooted device.
I was originally with H20 (an AT&T mvno) and would have periodic issues with MMS. Both sending and receiving. I am using Google Hangouts.
I recently switched to Cricket (owned by AT&T) earlier this month (reasons unrelated), and have not been able to send or receive an MMS since. I have spent several hours on the phone with both Cricket and LG, even going into a store to have my SIM replaced. I came across this thread accidentally while looking for suggestions on the best way to do a backup before I try a factory reset as a last resort to resolve the problem.
APN has been verified correct numerous times and unfortunately, Cricket's cust service is next to useless. After two and a half weeks and numerous calls, I still have yet to hear back from a Tech Support rep. I'm not sure whose network straight talk uses, but I wonder if it's a network issue with AT&T subcarriers?
The most frustrating part is every time I talk to somewhat at Cricket cust service, they say that the Nexus 5 is not "officially supported" on their network and that it is probably a phone issue and try to sell me a new phone. When I explain that the Nexus 5 runs stock Android, they try and tell me that that might be the problem *SMH*.
Anyone else?

Yes me too. I found out today that my G2 can't get MMS at all. I've tried tons of fixes and nothing seems to work.
No sure if anyone is still experiencing the MMS issues on Nexus 5 as I am. I have a stock, unrooted N5 running Android 4.4.4 on Tmobile. GoSMS is my default sms client. What happens totally randomly is that I COMPLETELY lose the ability to send/receive MMS picture messages (group messages that come in as MMS are unaffected). Once I lose MMS, ALL text I have which have picture messages attached change from viewable icons to blank images or "Xs". All MMS messages in go become white boxes that say "picture does not exist). It has not mattered if I have taken all other text clients off the phone and used ONLY Hangouts as the default, it still happens. This is the ONLY solution I've found to fix the issue:
1) Set Hangout as default sms client
2) Reset APNs to default (settings-->SMS-->Access Point Names--> hit three dots-->reset to default)
3) Go to main phone settings (Settings-->More-->Mobile Networks-->Access Point Names), reset to default
4) Select the APNs that your device normally uses (for me, its fast.t-mobile.com), set MMS Port to 8080 and save APN
5) go back into Hangouts, select the same APN (fast.t-mobile.com), set the MMS Port to 8080 and save APN
6) Reboot phone
Once its rebooted, if your MMS images are once again viewable in Hangouts, its fixed and you can send/receive picture messages again. You can now switch to whatever default client you chose. This has worked for me EVERY time to 'fix' the MMS issue, but what I have never figured out is WHY its happening and I can't pinpoint exactly when it started. I want to say the update to 4.4.2 may have triggered it, but I honestly can't recall. I know this wasn't ALWAYS an issue. If anyone else has any theories/ideas, I'm all ears. Its just a pain in the a** to have to reset the APNS in two spots and reboot every time this happens (I think I read that Hangouts' APN settings can override the system APN settings so that's why I reset in both spots). I've tried ONLY resetting the main phone's APN and it didn't fix the issue.

**com.qualcomm.qcrilmsgtunnel** is your gn0me in the engine;
where sms/ mms is *natively* transported via the native phone functions & hooks, hangouts provides the same functionality *over the top* of the carrier's route, strictly IP; call it hi-jacking in a sense, that's what you en-able hangouts to do on reboots, hijack those functions..
*SIM toolkit
*Phone/Messaging storage
*Phone
is what com.qualcomm.qcrilmsgtunnel is tied to, which hangouts, isn't..
Last update to hangouts screwed up my APN setting. ?

Cricket Wireless, Textra or Stock Messaging apps don't MMS!

I am now a Cricket customer! I am getting H+ data. I am trying to send MMS messages using Textra (won't work) and the Stock Messaging app (ditto) . At this point I will use whichever of the two I can get working. Is anyone out there on Cricket who can explain / help who has personally dealt with this? I changed the APN settings on the X2 to be exactly the ones on the Cricket website (the Cricket store had misspelled some of it!) I also went into Textra Legacy and changed the APN manually (Textra had my old TMobile information - it didn't change automatically for some reason). I am trying to send the MMS (group texts and / or pictures) while off WiFi. I can send single (no picture) SMS and receive responses but I am a texter who sends mainly group messages and pictures! PLEASE help!

In settings---->more---->Mobile Network, under Access Point Names under MMS tap that and look at the mmsc. Write that down. In Textra go into Settings, and at the bottom go into MMS, then MMS Advanced. Go to Manually Configure APN and put in what you wrote down in the MMSC.. Hit ok, then try it and see if it starts working.

Whaaat? You did? I know that you are gonna be shocked at how easy it is to set up right out of the box! I was hoping to find that elusive X2 702L owning Cricket customer out there who has figured out how to successfully send and receive MMS messages! I guess I am a unicorn! Lol! I am headed back to the Cricket store today... I don't know what they can do for me... I called them yesterday and asked if MMS trouble was an issue at Cricket right now (with my luck I would be beating my head against a wall for hours only to find that it is a known Cricket issue). They said not that they know of and told me to bring the phone back in... I don't think that there's much knowledgeable or experienced help there so I am not thrilled... If I find an answer I will definitely post it for anyone else out there having trouble...

I forgot to ask you... Is the Stock messaging app supposed to work at all? If I have all the Contacts formatted to +1 (757) 555-5555 is it supposed to work? I never got the "invalid recipient" message and have never had trouble sending or receiving actual phone calls... When I send a group message on the Stock app it does send it but it divides it up into separate messages. If I send to 3 people it shows it as one message on my screen but shows Sent 1, Sent 2 and Sent 3. The responses come up on 3 different screens. It's too confusing to follow... And when I send a picture it doesn't send at all. Should I tell Cricket that the Stock app never works for USA X2 users? Or does it? And when you have trouble with Textra they always tell you to test the problem on the Stock app so if it works on the Stock app it can be inferred that it is a Textra problem... But if you can never get the Stock app to work how can you do that???

I'm using Cricket on my 703L. I use Hangouts as my default messaging app, and I haven't had any issues using SMS or MMS. My APN info came down automatically when I inserted my SIM, but here's what I have:

ATT Phone

MMSC

MMS proxy
proxy.mobile.att.net
MMS Port

APN Type

APN Protocol

All other settings were showing "not set".
Oddly enough, I know I've used the APN info from Cricket before to get setup, using the MMSC you listed above. I'm not sure why it pulled down different ones when it did it automatically.
I hope this helps.

Thanks, WPENN! I just got back from the Cricket store where 4 of us spent 2 hours on this and never got it working. I am afraid to jinx it but I actually found a website Gishan.net when I Googled I think Huawei Mediapad X2 MMS. This website had APNs for all the different carriers. I went to my device APN page and set everything back to default. Then I just plugged in the information they had for Cricket. Then I saved it and restarted. Textra is now working (I had installed 4 different SMS apps - including Hangouts - and none had worked. I bet they all do now... But I just needed one and Textra is my go-to...) I am doing the happy dance!!!

Well, again I spoke too soon. I am sooo anxious for this to work that I jump with excitement the first day and then... [emoji26] [emoji26] [emoji26] [emoji24] [emoji24] [emoji24] I just don't get it! I found out that I didn't get a bunch of texts from people at Thanksgiving. That's why I changed the APN settings to the AT&T ones you provided. By then I wasn't in a group of phones. Only one other phone available to use to help me test mine. I have to admit, I think all the successful testing of the new AT&T settings was on a single person text basis. The word texts and the picture texts worked great and I thought I was so lucky! But then on Black Friday I was at the mall and was informed by phone calls that I didn't get some texts. Words. Both single and group texts. So that night I tried Hangouts. It was too hard for my recipients to deal with as they helped me with my testing and it seems like the group Hangouts still didn't work correctly. So yesterday I missed a bunch of texts... And last night missed about 15 pictures that were texted amongst the group. It seems like the recipients have no problem getting my word and picture texts. I just cannot receive theirs. So now I have tried 3 different sets of APNs on the Stock Messaging app and Textra and now even Hangouts... I just don't know what to do!!! A LOT of my interaction with this phone is texting and picture texting!!! If I could only find the xda unicorn - the person who is a Cricket customer who also exclusively uses Textra AND does not have a rooted 702L!!! Lololol!!!

I haven't had a single problem with texting on T-Mobile. I'm not sure why it's happening to you. Maybe it's something with the service in your area? That's the only thing I can think of.

I got a new sim card from Cricket yesterday and I am doing a Factory Reset today... I don't mind... I am going to start fresh and I am going to use the AT&T APN settings that the other poster who is a Cricket customer provided... I am going to manually put the APN information into Textra if it doesn't automatically come in. I have a good feeling about this... Wish me luck!

I got everything finished yesterday and soon after I got a phone call from a friend. He asked if I had gotten the 2 pictures he texted me... I didn't but I thought it was while I was down. He said he had just re-sent them. I had finished setting everything up and the first thing I find out is that I am still not getting pictures. So I asked him to re-send them. Still nothing... We were able to word text back and forth... So then I asked him to wait a minute and re-text the pictures and I immediately got off WiFi. I got the pictures immediately!!! So I went into Textra and went to the TMobile fix setting and turned it on. It is supposed to instantly turn off WiFi to allow you to get a MMS text (group and/or pictures). I did find out that TMobile doesn't allow MMS over WiFi so I figure Cricket is probably the same... I am Googling it today... So I guess if that setting works for TMobile it will do the same for Cricket. OR I can never get on WiFi again - I cannot predict when I am going to get a MMS text...

I don't think that will work since the X2 doesn't have wifi calling so that setting is pretty useless. On a side note, in settings under More---Mobile Network I have data roaming turned on and receive MMS messages while roaming turned on as well as the WLAN/Mobile Data switch set to always use Mobile Data if WLAN is unavailable. Make sure both of those are turned on.

Cat 6 isn't used here so you don't have to worry about that.

MMS Stopped working two days ago

A few bits of information to start.
- I have been on the same ROM and same settings for over a year (including APN)
- I use ChompSMS, but have uninstalled it as part of testing
- I have tested both on and off of WiFI
- I am on StraightTalk
- I used a different APN than what they have on their site, and when this started, I updated to the one they list there now, but the problem remained the same on both options.
Now, my problem, for the past two days, any MMS (I believe based on past history that these are group conversations, not individual MMS messages), are not downloading. Using the built in Messanger application I get an error that it cannot download the message. With ChompSMS, installed, I get the message that it cannot download MMS and to check my APN settings. I tested sending myself an image MMS, and that both sent and got received. Other than that test, I've got nothing the past two days other than that error from Chomp (or nothing from the built in) at the rate of 4-5 times every 30 minutes (the approx rate I'd normally get a message in a group text).
What I have left to try:
- I'm using SMS Backup & Restore to backup my SMS/MMS and then I'm going to wipe out the database and restore my messages
However, anyone have any other ideas what might be wrong or what I can do to fix this?

Do you happen to use PushBullet? If so, uncheck "SMS sync" and reboot. That always causes issues for me.

Unfortunately no. I don't have anything that could have caused this. Since Saturday, I've only updated "Reddit is fun golden platinum", "dolphin browser", and "power toggles" (installed, but never run).
The above was on Sunday
The problem began on Tuesday afternoon.
Prior to that, it was working.

Well I thought I'd ask. That's the only thing that has ever broke MMS for me.

Apparantly I'm not the only straight talk user that has this issue.
Don't know what it is though :\

I'm assuming it is something with Marshmallow and Cricket causing the issue. My Nexus 5 on Cricket won't receive MMS if WiFi is on. If I leave WiFi off, I can receive and send MMS fine. My wife has a Moto X on Lollipop on Cricket and can receive MMS fine with WiFi on.
My situation was very similar to yours in that MMS was working fine for weeks after I upgraded to 6.0. It then just stopped randomly. I still have not found a work around other than disabling WiFi.

That's not the same issue.
This is an issue affecting all (most) of straight talk, and has nothing to do with the phone or the setting.
Wifi on/off doesn't have an effect.
So, it's not a phone issue, just a Straight Talk one.

This is my exact life, please let me know if you figure it out better. I do think Pushbullet was screwing me up too, even just having it installed without SMS sync.
MMS always downloaded fine with Pushbullet installed, but since upgrading to Marshmallow, I haven't been able to download a single MMS on my N5. I'm on T-Mobile, not Straight Talk.
Are you sure it's not related to the more-widespread issue of MMS not working with WiFi on?
EDIT: See here.
Actually having this problem on mine as well now (AT&T). Had auto updates off. Nothing changed to my knowledge. Just not downloading some MMS' in Google Messenger. Some it will download. Standard txt's seem fine? Have a group of about 4 under a user category (this is usually where various threads/contacts are shown in Messenger) "message not found". Then under known contacts, I had 4 labeled as "couldn't download" - "touch to download" - which upon touching, state "downloading"... which at some point fails (like, lots longer later - 10 minutes +, and states the msg size is 709KB?)
Also, just noted the "more-widespread issue of MMS not working with WiFi on". Will investigate this possibility.
edit: my wifi has been off. So, not a culprit with my particular problem.
Yup, standard SMS works, but the only way I can get MMS to work in any client is to cycle WiFi and reboot. It's an enormous bug.

Advanced Messaging RCS stopped working

Ok, a little backfill here. My wife and I got Note 5's about a month after release around the time updates were released allowing RCS functionality. I loved advanced messaging, mainly because I could text full resolution pics less than 10MB.
When it came out, I remember if one of your contacts had it, the messaging icon under their contact details turned from orange to green. Also, if I remember right the only way to mms a full size pic was to share it from the gallery to messages, not attach a pic from within the messages app.
So, I realize it had been a good 6 weeks or so since I've been able to text large pics to my wife. Her contact details icons are no longer green either. There is an S6 and an S6 Edge on my account also and none of us can advance message each other.
I also cannot use RCS with a friend of mine on Tmobile with a Note 5 either. I went to a Tmobile store and they said maybe binge on was affecting it, I obliged them and disabled binge on on the other 4 lines, mine is unlimited and had been off since announced. We tried that, to no avail and the service rep said I should call tech support. Called, they escalated it and created a trouble ticked. Called me back today saying there were no network problems, to go to a store.
I took to Twitter with @TmobileHelp and they had me make sure VOLTE was on and WiFi calling, which it was. Had me clear data on the messages app, restart device, still no go.
I did a full factory reset, no go. T-mobile's twitter help created another ticket for me and said they escalated it and will follow up by this friday.
Some other notes is all devices are completely stock and fully updated, no root, and we all live in strong service LTE areas in SoCal. I've travelled in a 200 mile radius the last week checking my RCS, and it doesn't work anywhere. Well, I should clarify that Video calling on LTE works, just not advanced messaging.
I haven't found any cases of this on the Web anywhere else. Has anybody ran into this or have any other tips I have left out?

try this. go into contacts>"my profile" which is your name> and enable "profile sharing" on both devices. that was my issue back when i first tried using it, but it works fine now. its spotty sometimes, but it does indeed work for me.

Mine was shared but not my wifes. Changed them both as well as cleaned up several duplicate contacts. No dice. Each "my profile" for the respective device shows green icons on its own device. But on the other devices it's a no go. They even show that they are shared via profile sharing on the opposite devices but still won't light up green.
I'll post up after tmobile follows up on the tech ticket today or tomorrow.

That's weird. But good luck! Also you could try two more things , when you factory reset your phone make sure you enable enhanced features after you log into your Samsung account, but before you do that try to wipe cache/dalvik and see if that helps. But before you do that wipe enhanced features cache in applications and see if that helps.
Lol yeah I know its all jumbled up lol
Well, factory reset both devices. Logged in skipping Google and Samsung logins. Manually added each other's contacts on the 2 devices, enabled profile sharing, opted into enhanced features, WiFi calling preferred and connected.
Restarted both devices, no advanced messages. Can video call no problem, although the video call icon is not green either like it used to be.
Is anybody in SoCal able to use advanced messaging? At this point I'm calling it a network issue.
Tmobile said the network is fine, they are sending 2 new sims to try.

I'm having the same problem. I have the s6, everything updated yesterday, I turned on everything I need to turn on and it's still not working. It's really frustrating.
Solved with 4 new sim cards. All contact video and messaging icons lit up green after about 1 minute of having the new sims in the 4 RCS capable devices on my account.

MMS Not Downloading - Project Fi MHA-L29

I've tried the different settings here https://apn.gishan.net/settings/1654_40_project_fi_apn_settings_for_huawei_mate_9.php
I've tried different messaging apps, Textra is my main messaging app however Signal and the stock Messaging app on the phone show the MMS messages that won't download where as Textra doesn't show anything but the notification saying failure to download.
I have the Project Fi app installed and made sure to give it every permission I can within the app settings menu and it gives me the T077 error which I expected since the Mate 9 is not a "supported" phone but I have good T Mobile service in my area. I've tried changing all the different MMS settings in Textra, tried changing APN's in the phone settings, making sure everything was on IPv4 instead of 6 and I know my cell data works with the phone, it's JUST MMS not working for some reason.
Anyone have any ideas or fixed this yet? Would rooting help in any way? This is a really nice phone coming from a Project Fi Nexus 6P and I don't want to return it because I can't get MMS to work, but the fact that it's not working is a deal breaker.
Edit: I ordered another SIM and a Data Only SIM from Project Fi to test out in the event I can't fix it within some settings.

Not sure if this will help or not. I am on Cricket Wireless and Textra is the only app I can download MMS. I had to go to settings/MMS/ and change MMS behavior to "Legacy". It fixed it for me. Hope that helps.
