The default one is already optimized. Why must a custom one? I already tried one before and the performance is pretty much the same.

[Q] noobish question here: What is a Kernel?

i had read a couple of posts here and there on how good faux kernel is, on "how smooth it runs or that it gets good battery life" but my question is, what is a kernel? is it only to over/under clock or is it something more that i am missing? what do i need to run it, (requirements you may say) ? i am on weapon g2x 3.0
In a nutshell (from the way i've always understood it) a kernel is basically the bridge of communication between your applications and the phone's hardware. There are no "requirements" to run it on your phone because it's already on there. Without it, you're smartphone would not be functional. These other kernels you hear about are custom made kernels. Kernels can be replaced by flashing one on top of the other (just like a ROM).

Even more basic understanding. Software for your hardware. If you are a car guy...ECU?

Thanks for the answer guys
So, can you mix kernels with custom roms or do they work as a package? If someone comes out with a kernel with a particular feature or fix, can I flash that on my phone to enhance or will it not be compatible with my rom?
thanks

There are kernels designed for certain ROMs. We have kernels for CM7 & AOSP Based ROMs, and kernels for 2.3.3/2.2.2 based ROMs.
IMO Fauxs kernels are the best

Yes you can. The kernel is sort of like the engine of your car. There's certain kernels that only work with CM7, or stock, but they'll usually say in the description.

kernel or rom

i have a stupid/newb question... is the performance depends on rom or kernel??
Yes it does.
According to me 1/3 rom 2/3 kernel.

so whats the best kernel for stock ICS rom, in terms of better gaming performance and battery life?
Well, its subjective.
I hate sense, so im not on stock based rom or kernel.
Right now i use aokp jb 4.1 + sultan r45 kernel, and im satisfied with results.
Just try different combos to find what you like. That is the point of custom roms/kernels

welll, there are chances that custom roms have malwares..

Should I update from CM13

It's been a solid year since I've updated my tab 10.1's rom, and it's slowed down a bit (mainly because of RAM), so I wanted to ask the community should I update from CM13?
I'm looking for a rom with these qualities:
- Android 6.0+
- Themes
- Fast and light
- Can be OC'd
- Compatible w/ Xposed

You can go for Lineage OS 13.0 but it is not over clocked

Overclocking is needed imo on the Tab 2

I don't know over clocked kernel is available or not. You want performance?

Yeah
Custom kernels aren't supported anymore, meaning oc kernels like dhollmen won't work with newer roms. You'll need to get an older rom but it won't have security updates or better optimization on the tab

If you want best performance. Try KitKat ROM. I am using CM 11 since 2 months performance is pretty good

There is no working OC Kernel anymore.
You can use some 2 years old device specific builds with old OC Kernel only.
UA doesn't have a theme manager - it's almost pure AOSP and won't have any extras added in future (maybe an integrated Updater only).

Depends on your needs. Install twrp, make a backup of current rom and test yourself

Lineage 16 with ~2ghz underclock mostly stock

Seeking one of the recent Android 8 or 9 ROMs but similar to sultanxda's ROM which had the cpu clocked down for battery savings. Are any of them daily-driver worthy / stable?

I'm pretty sure you'll like this zip
It clocks the CPU down no matter what ROM you're using!
EDIT: sorry, I was wrong, I forgot one thing. This zip will work with all Oreo ROM's but it won't work on LineageOS-based Pie ROM's. It might work with some AOSP-based P ROM's such as POSP. I'll make a newer one that works with all Pie ROM's when I have time.

Hey Tomoms, I don't want to put haste or anything, but I would like to know if by chance you have already realized the zip in question, I'm interested too cause I'm currently using your kernel but I'd rather prefer using the Lineage stock one with underclocked CPU so I can use built-in battery profiles when needed since I don't have root and can't customize your kernel.
Thank you!

AOSP vs MIUI

Quick question, can you install AOSP Kernel to MIUI Stock ROM?
Some kernels like DPA are compatible with both MIUI and AOSP

Generally, no, you can't -- unless otherwise stated by developer or tested by a significant number of users.
