Hi, I'm looking at buying this phone today on Ebay and I have a few questions before I do.
1. How easy is it to unlock from T-Mobile?
2. Can it be rooted?

1. If you're a customer of theirs, it's easy. If not, you may have to pay to het the sim unlock code. If you'll be staying with TMobile, it's a mute point.
2. Yes, of course

To answer your question"through experience" it is easy to unlock and root the T-Mobile variant. There are guides on this forum to unlock the bootloader and convert from T-Mobile firmware to either global or eu firmware to then root. Takes about 30mins max.
Yep, can do all of the above...

It's a T-mobile locked phone that a guy is selling on ebay and I use Red Pocket so I'm hesitant to buy it because I don't want to be stuck with a phone I can't use my carrier on.

If you use the tool to convert the phone to the global firmware it's automatically unlocked regardless of if it's locked to T-Mobile
I did this instead of waiting for TMobile to unlock it. Like the other poster said like 30mins it's unlocked and rooted

Thank you for clearing that up for me. Someone else just bought the phone today so I missed out on getting it at the price I wanted.

Instead of using eBay, try looking on swappa, it's more secure for cell phones. They verify IMEIs before the sale is posted and everything. It's very secure for buyer and seller

I know that I am not the only one looking at this phone as a way to get a great Dual Core, 4G, vanilla Android phone (unmolested by AT&T) but able to be used on the AT&T network. I have had great luck and a lot of fun with the AT&T Nexus One and I think this phone will be just a successful with the help of XDA DEV's
I wanted to start a thread here in the G2X section for people to share with other users how to's and what works with regards to using this phone on the AT&T network.
It may be to soon to get all the answers, but maybe someone is working the same answers.
Questions:
How easy will it be to obtain the SIM Unlock code from T-Mobile or LG?
I am going to buy the phone at retail, just may have to use T-Mobile for 60-90 days to get the Unlock code.
Will AT&T allow us to upgrade to 4G data plan without buying their 4G phone?
I know from researching the Atrix 4G that the AT&T data plan needed to be upgraded to a 4G plan but you could keep unlimited data.
If I remember Tmobile's unlock policy correctly you wont have to wait. You can request the unlock code right away if you pay full retail price. Unless that's changed recently of course but I dont think it has. Good luck with it.
Kind of a repeat of what is in this thread started by me (which you tried to hijack)

Re-posting what I have found here:
I just got off of the phone with t-mobile customer care (1-877-453-1304). I called them because I wanted clarification on this before I purchased 2 full retail price phones.
The program is called the "Sim Subsidy Unlock Program." It is for anyone that purchases a phone for the full retail price from a corporate store or an authorized retailer and pays all of the price upfront.
You need to call customer care, explain that you purchased a phone for full price and request a "remedy request form number." They will then open this request and you then have 7 days to fax the following to the Sim Unlock Team at 1-813-353-6557 :
ATTENTION: SIM UNLOCK TEAM
Full Name
Mobile Number
Email Address
Readable Copy Of Sales Receipt
It takes 24 to 72 hours to process and they will email you instructions to unlock your phone.
As for at&t's 4g, there currently using hspa+ also, so if it supports their 3g, you'll have at&t "4g" as well

That is this NORMAL procedure ...unless the phone is "exclusive" to T-Mobile. In such a case they will NOT unlock it even if you paid full retail price. This is what happened to me with their dell streak 7, I had to return it as they would not unlock it no matter what and I paid full retail for it so please triple check before you buy as I think the the G2X is exclusive to T-Mobile in the US.

why does it work on at&t bands.... ANY PHONE and i repeat ANY phone can be unlocked.... the phone is made for two networkds (im guessing because of the possible merger) so no its not stuck to just tmobile... now i understand your stating that tmobile might not give the codes because it is an "exclusive tmobile phone" however!!!!! give this forum a few weeks and you will have it unlocked!

It officially has been on sale since the 15th, so yes, it is out yet. Also, I have seen unlock codes for phones that are about to be released. Especially if there is a European counterpart.
P.S. I'm getting especially sick of these carriers with phones being locked to carriers, locked down, locked/encrypted bootloaders. SMH.

SIM unlock codes are provided by the phone manufacturer. When you make a request for an unlock code, the wireless company forwards the request to the manufacturer. The manufacturer e-mail's you the unlock code. If you're using an unlock service off the web they're doing the same thing. Devs have nothing to do with unlocking a SIM.

I came across this article today http://www.appy-geek.com/Web/ArticleWeb.aspx?regionid=1&articleid=26045339&m=d
The articles states that after a contract has been fullfilled its legal to unlock the phone. Will our phone be unlocked now? Does this mean Verizon will unlock our bootloaders? Or just the phone? Also if I buy the phone outright for 600$ does the phone come unlocked out the box?

Yeah but Verizon always complains about users trying to replace their phone when it is completely their fault if they fail at flashing and don't have a backup. A lot of people, from what I can tell, can hide the fact that they've rooted and/or unlocked their bootloader and they can get a new phone.

I've ran into this as well. Before rooting and the plethora of android phones flooded the market, VZW was a bit more relaxed on what they would replace. Now that I'm up to my S3, they proved to be sticklers in my own situation. I had a legitimate reason to exchange my previous Samsung Stratosphere. Mine was rooted and my wife's was stock. Both had the same radio issues. I told them this and they upgraded her no problems at all. I had quite a hard time getting them to upgrade it without revoking my grandfathered unlimited data plan... smh. Oh well, guess times change when some people abuse the system blatantly.
I was able to unlock my G935T, Galaxy S7Edge today so I can use it on my ATT Account. I had to call TMO customer service because the Unlock Ap that came with the phone would not authorize the unlock when I first tried it.
Over the last few days, in the process of getting unlocked I learned a few things:
1) Phone has to be on TMOBILE for about 5 to 7 days before their system can recognize the device. it might happen sooner - took five days for their systems to see that I had the S7 Edge active on the account.
2) until we are rooted, you have to be able to meet Tmobile Requirements to unlock a device:
A) Be a Tmobile customer for a minimum of 1 year
B) Phone is active on TMOBILE Account for a minimum of 40 days
C) Phone is active on a PRE-PAY account. and Pre Pay account has a minimum balance of $100
From what I understand, You only need to meet one of the three requirements, A or B or C.
My experience in working with Customer Support was mixed. Most were very helpful (I have been trying to get customer support to authorize my unlock since day 2 of owning the phone) One guy was a jerk and refused to accept that I met the requirements. He kept saying something that was not mentioned in the rules at all - sort of making things up to meet his understanding - but when he transferred me to a higher level of support, they understood and actually helped me.
The good news is, there is a guy in Tmobile Note 5 Forums that can help you unlock devices (once you are rooted) My understanding is that he is offering his services free of charge but will accept donations to anyone grateful enough to donate something if the want to. Once we havr root, head over here to get more information) Sim Unlock - US and International
Finally, there is one other way you may be able to unlock your TMobile S7 Edge but you will have to wait until Sammobile has Firmware posted for our devices. Specifically you will need firmware for Metro PC G935T1 (versus G935T) They use the exact same firmware that is used by TMOBILE (at least they did on the Note 5 and S6) Metro PCS does not use the Unlock ap to unlock the sim card, you will just need an unlock code. Flashing their firmware in odin on the S6 and Note 5 would then allow you to put a sim card from another carrier and unlock the sim with an Unlock code. YOU CANNOT use unlock codes on TMOBILE Firmware because of their "Unlock AP" it somehow disables the ability to unlock with a code - but because METRO PC doesn't have the unlock app, it is a non issue.
Hope this is helpful...
Good to know!
So does everything work perfectly on the AT&T network.... Mainly LTE?

That is F'd up dude. If only you lived in California. I believe a state law was passed there that prevents carriers from refusing to unlock devices that are paid for. I'm really starting to despise them more and more. Only thing they are good for where I live is speed and coverage.

You can try this service from UnlockRadar working 100%: https://www.unlockradar.com/service/t-mobile-usa-device-unlock-app-official-unlock
What ROM are you using? In the past I've gotten that message about device comparability before, I was running an international ROM. If that's not the issue, honestly, give them a call back, might take a couple times but I've had different reps tell me different things and often calling back a couple times I'll get someone that is willing to help me.
So I received my preorder S8 through AT&T today. From the information I've been able to gather, the model number is supposed to be SM-G950A. I was looking through the phones info and realized the phone I received is a SM-G950U model. Did I just get very lucky and receive an unlocked S8 from AT&T?? I know there's not too much info out there, but is the unlocked model carrier unlocked only, or will I be able to unlock the bootloader as well? Carrier unlock is no big deal to me considering I work as a cell technician and have a reseller account, but if it will be possible to unlock my bootloader that would really excite me. Thanks for any info!!!

Interesting... Maybe all the preorders are unlocked?
T-Mobile S8 here, can confirm I got the U model and can confirm it is sim locked.
So there's no difference in any of the US versions I'm guessing. This will make carrier switching easier.
I heard they are all U models. They are carrier locked besides Verizon. Does the T-Mobile software have the stupid unlock app still?

Yes, it does on mine.
Rumor is, they all get locked the moment you insert a SIM. So... like... don't insert AT&T SIM into a phone you will use with T-Mobile.

I wouldn't doubt that one bit. I had a few S7 930 U's, when you would put a different sim in them they would reboot and load the new carriers sim settings. Wonder if you factory reset right from the get go maybe it would stay unlocked.

Nope. Would kind of defeat the purpose of SIM lock. Basically, as long as you are willing to blow up your data, you can use your phone with any carrier. Then just SmartSwitch restore.

I hear ya. Wonder if you put a foreign sim in the T-Mobile varient a unlock code prompt will pop up or if you have to use that useless app they have.
Another thing.....I wonder if they're still going g to have just a U model device, if they did maybe we could use that firmware and be unlocked, only time will tell I guess.

What if you insert a Verizon sim first? Will it then be unlocked since they usually are?

There's supposed to be several US models based on carriers. I don't think everyone will be getting the U version.

That's not what I've been reading and hearing. All the US models are the same hardware and phone. Only thing that makes it carrier specific is that carriers firmware.
There's no branding on the phones either, no Verizon or att symbol on the back of the devices.

Honest question... Why "useless app" when it always worked well for me? I had no issues getting temporary unlocks.

Because you have to meet certain cryteria's for them to unlock it. I've also heard all kinds of horror stories of the phones re-locking after software updates ect. It's much easier to insert a foreign sim and buy a unlock code for 20 dollars and know the phone will be unlocked for good forever.

When I got my T-Mobile phone, the first thing I did was boot using a verizon sim. Never connected to the network or internet. Upon booting I got a notification stating that the phone is indeed carrier locked and to use the app to unlock, so its safe to say at least for the T-Mobile version that it is locked from factory.
All are U versions. Samsung is controlling updates and the service providers just provide antenna drivers and bloatware.

Maybe it's a good idea. Samsung is running around trying to appease every carrier out there before doing U updates. When everything is U, then there's just one update point.
