So I received my preorder S8 through AT&T today. From the information I've been able to gather, the model number is supposed to be SM-G950A. I was looking through the phones info and realized the phone I received is a SM-G950U model. Did I just get very lucky and receive an unlocked S8 from AT&T?? I know there's not too much info out there, but is the unlocked model carrier unlocked only, or will I be able to unlock the bootloader as well? Carrier unlock is no big deal to me considering I work as a cell technician and have a reseller account, but if it will be possible to unlock my bootloader that would really excite me. Thanks for any info!!!
I got a U as well. From T-mobile.

Interesting... Maybe all the preorders are unlocked?
T-Mobile S8 here, can confirm I got the U model and can confirm it is sim locked.
So there's no difference in any of the US versions I'm guessing. This will make carrier switching easier.
I heard they are all U models. They are carrier locked besides Verizon. Does the T-Mobile software have the stupid unlock app still?

Yes, it does on mine.
Rumor is, they all get locked the moment you insert a SIM. So... like... don't insert AT&T SIM into a phone you will use with T-Mobile.

I wouldn't doubt that one bit. I had a few S7 930 U's, when you would put a different sim in them they would reboot and load the new carriers sim settings. Wonder if you factory reset right from the get go maybe it would stay unlocked.

Nope. Would kind of defeat the purpose of SIM lock. Basically, as long as you are willing to blow up your data, you can use your phone with any carrier. Then just SmartSwitch restore.

I hear ya. Wonder if you put a foreign sim in the T-Mobile varient a unlock code prompt will pop up or if you have to use that useless app they have.
Another thing.....I wonder if they're still going g to have just a U model device, if they did maybe we could use that firmware and be unlocked, only time will tell I guess.

There's supposed to be several US models based on carriers. I don't think everyone will be getting the U version.

That's not what I've been reading and hearing. All the US models are the same hardware and phone. Only thing that makes it carrier specific is that carriers firmware.
There's no branding on the phones either, no Verizon or att symbol on the back of the devices.

Because you have to meet certain cryteria's for them to unlock it. I've also heard all kinds of horror stories of the phones re-locking after software updates ect. It's much easier to insert a foreign sim and buy a unlock code for 20 dollars and know the phone will be unlocked for good forever.

When I got my T-Mobile phone, the first thing I did was boot using a verizon sim. Never connected to the network or internet. Upon booting I got a notification stating that the phone is indeed carrier locked and to use the app to unlock, so its safe to say at least for the T-Mobile version that it is locked from factory.

Maybe it's a good idea. Samsung is running around trying to appease every carrier out there before doing U updates. When everything is U, then there's just one update point.

I was able to unlock my G935T, Galaxy S7Edge today so I can use it on my ATT Account. I had to call TMO customer service because the Unlock Ap that came with the phone would not authorize the unlock when I first tried it.
Over the last few days, in the process of getting unlocked I learned a few things:
1) Phone has to be on TMOBILE for about 5 to 7 days before their system can recognize the device. it might happen sooner - took five days for their systems to see that I had the S7 Edge active on the account.
2) until we are rooted, you have to be able to meet Tmobile Requirements to unlock a device:
A) Be a Tmobile customer for a minimum of 1 year
B) Phone is active on TMOBILE Account for a minimum of 40 days
C) Phone is active on a PRE-PAY account. and Pre Pay account has a minimum balance of $100
From what I understand, You only need to meet one of the three requirements, A or B or C.
My experience in working with Customer Support was mixed. Most were very helpful (I have been trying to get customer support to authorize my unlock since day 2 of owning the phone) One guy was a jerk and refused to accept that I met the requirements. He kept saying something that was not mentioned in the rules at all - sort of making things up to meet his understanding - but when he transferred me to a higher level of support, they understood and actually helped me.
The good news is, there is a guy in Tmobile Note 5 Forums that can help you unlock devices (once you are rooted) My understanding is that he is offering his services free of charge but will accept donations to anyone grateful enough to donate something if the want to. Once we havr root, head over here to get more information) Sim Unlock - US and International
Finally, there is one other way you may be able to unlock your TMobile S7 Edge but you will have to wait until Sammobile has Firmware posted for our devices. Specifically you will need firmware for Metro PC G935T1 (versus G935T) They use the exact same firmware that is used by TMOBILE (at least they did on the Note 5 and S6) Metro PCS does not use the Unlock ap to unlock the sim card, you will just need an unlock code. Flashing their firmware in odin on the S6 and Note 5 would then allow you to put a sim card from another carrier and unlock the sim with an Unlock code. YOU CANNOT use unlock codes on TMOBILE Firmware because of their "Unlock AP" it somehow disables the ability to unlock with a code - but because METRO PC doesn't have the unlock app, it is a non issue.
Hope this is helpful...
Good to know!
So does everything work perfectly on the AT&T network.... Mainly LTE?

the biggest thing to think about is that the g930f and g935f are suppose to be region locked. Meaning you have to make a 5 minute call using a european sim before the phone will sim unlock to allow the use of a US sim. Im waiting for someone who has purchased a g930f or g935f to verify this

I have read that as well. I'm asking because there's a sale on eBay, and they're shipping from the US. Haven't contacted the seller re: the region lock, but it would be very odd if they're selling unlocked phones in the US that can't be used. Certainly something to clarify. Without full T-MO support I'm not a buyer anyway, so that was my first concern.

I agree, it wouldnt make any sense for them to be selling these phones in the US, if they cant be used due to the region lock, everyone would be returning them.
Either way we will know for certain next week, as i think a bunch of us have jumped on the crazy deals, ie G930 for 599, g935f for 699 (no tax)

I'd much rather find out if the G930F will work before ordering it than go through the hassle of sending it back. Just doesn't make sense that a company would sell phones that don't work, but stranger things have happened. Thus my original post. With the 930T you will get T-Mobile VoLTE, WiFi calling, and Band 4 3G in areas that have not been refarmed (is there still any left?), and T-Mobile support (and update, if they ever come out, LOL). I included support in one the pluses despite not ever relying on the provider for device support as I always root and custom ROM all phones.
If you don't care for any of the above, then the 930F would work and you could get it cheaper (even more so if you happen to have eBay Bucks), though if you factor the promotional offers, the 930T may end up cheaper.

I'm extremely interested in this possibility. Not keen on losing VoLTE & especially WiFi Calling, but if that's what it takes to get a rooted S7, I would happily settle for this.
Hi! I got my Samsung Galaxy s7 930f today, so I was testing. Everything working fine, hsdpa, lte, I do not use VoLTE or Wifi calling, so I can't tell anything about it.
The price was $599 on the ebay. I use it in Clearwater, Fl, so looks like here the hsdpa working 1900mhz not 1700.
I have only one problem, the signal is little bit weaker than my another phone " Sony Xperia Z3 Compact ".

I started looking into the framework for the G935F and G935T and from what I see, there are a lot of changes that Samsung made to get VoLTE to work with T-Mobile's servers. They did not go with the AOSP implementations of VoLTE and Wifi Calling that Google introduced in Marshmallow. They're still using the same custom implementation that they used on the Note 4. It's not easy, but I think it's possible to make VoLTE work with a custom ROM. If T-Mobile/Samsung won't unlock the bootloader of the G935T by the end of my return period, I'll probably buy the G935F and take a stab at making VoLTE work.
@Python_69: Was your device SIM and region unlocked when you got it? Did it work with a T-Mobile SIM right out of the box? Also, if you wouldn't mind, could you test if your phone can receive a band 12 LTE signal (for data only of course, since we don't have VoLTE yet)? Thanks!
If it becomes possible to run a rooted Exynos S7 on Tmobile & enact wifi calling & volte, it could basically become a work around for the locked bootloader of the 820 for those looking for TW based ROMs. I'm one, & from what I've read, the exynos sounds better for my needs anyway.

So I went to a Tmobile store and looked at the Galaxy s8+ and noticed the model was 955U not 955T
It was of course their demo unit which was strapped (tethered) to the desk which makes it impossible to feel properly in the hand... But whatever.
Curious if only the demo model was a U variant or what? I never payed attention to other models before now?

From what I read I'm not sure how long it will take to have T-Mobile officially unlock it. They have an app for that but they have several different criteria as far as being a current customer or a prepaid versus postpaid customer. Ive never unlocked a T-mobile phone with the app or a third party unlocking service so maybe someone with examples could chime in. It does seem AT&T has an easier online unlocking method for current and non customers to simply fill out a form.
And the U models are slow with updates

If the phone is IMEI blocked, which is likely is if reported lost or stolen, then you won't be able to use it on any network in that country afaik
you can't unlock your phone only by rooting and changing apn.

Good rule of thumb I have learned and used is to check google locks before seller leaves, And make them sign a bill of sale Printed name date and address, in most states in the U.S. most of these phones are valued over 500$ which With no profe You are technically in possession of stolen property which if valued over 500$ is a felony charge.
I have had a few close calls in the past but I do not now. It sucks cause you can get burned 2 ways.....

why seller reported this phone lost after selling or it was earlier?

Unfortunately some people do do this. Its crooked Always get a bill of sale and check for google locks if seller is in hurry, Pass it on as much as you may want a certain device and your getting a deal.
I think people get these phones on contract for no other reason than to sell them, then they either report lost or stolen, or don't pay the contract and it gets IMEI blocked
That, or they are stolen phones

it's very risky to buy a used phone in hurry without making sure that 'history' of this phone was good. I think better to add couple hundreds bucks and buy a new phone directly from carrier

sometimes the difference not only "couple hundreds" and used phone is much cheaper then new one. so better to buy a locked phone and then unlock it using sim network unlock puk code
what is the difference between Samsung Galaxy S7 G930A; G930P; G930V; G930T; G930R; G930U for sim unlocking? which one is easier to unlock? thanks

As a general rule, whenever you will buy another device from a person or third party, check the IMEI both http://imeipro.info/
At least this is one extra filter through which you make sure you buy a phone with a clean IMEI.

is this model DSDA (dual sim dual active) or DSDS (dual sim dual standby) ?

it's DSDS (dual sim dual standby), but you can activate some sort of imitation of "active" mode in settings. if sim1 is busy and someone calling on sim2 (which is offline because the phone has only one baseband) all income calls on sim2 will be redirected on sim1
quick question

Hi I'm new to posting on forums so if I break protocol or etiquette apologize in advance. two weeks ago I bought a t-mobile samsung galaxy s7 from craigslist only to find it was reported lost. the phone is not catching signal anymore and I can't use it. friend of mine told me that I can unlock the network via unlock code so I could use my cricket mobile sim with this phone. I made online research and found few sim unlocking services so my question is- can use one of them to unlock my phone or I can unlock it by rooting, changing apn settings etc?

im now back to g930t do i need to agree to the device data collection from tmobile pink screen in initial setup process for this to work?. and to clear dalvik cache dont i need to be rooted for that? i thought flashing back to stock does that automatically. thank you for your patience im still learning,( but totally dedicated in this art. ask my wife.) one more question since tmobile has terms for unlock policy one being on network for min of 40 days, does that mean i need to request unlock using a tmo sim inserted or can this be done using wifi? reason i ask is becasue im a att user and another policy for unlock is 2 requests per 90 days. and ive already attempted a temp and perm unlock. both said inelegiable. so im trying to narrow it down to see if i needed to have tmo sim inserted at the time to connect to there remote servers. if so since i didnt at thetime of request im hoping that the 2 unlock requests didnt count. and on the other hand that would be a pain because i dont have a tmo sim. or could this be achieved using wifi.?

So I have the MetroPCS version of the A20. I got it carrier unlocked the other day. I decided to try my Version SIM in it and it actually works. I've been using it a few days with no issues on Verizon. Just thought I'd share that.

Paid for an unlocking service on eBay. I’ve used them several times. They unlocked it via the MetroPCS unlock app (not really an app because they’ve built it in to the actual OS on the A20 under more network settings). So it’s an official unlock not some remote in to your PC scam thing.

Yeah. Sorry, I should have shared that. Wait time was about 10 days. Depending on when you buy it. The cost was $38.99 and the seller is in the link below. I have used them several times as each time it worked out great.

Tnx for sharing ,
Did you activated your A20 before you sent IMEI for unlocking or not? I have mine A20 and it's still not activated, dunno what I should do first ?
It doesn't matter as long as you have the metro unlock app installed.

I'm guessing almost all the MetroPCS A20s on craigslist were given "free with contract" so the initial 24-month contract is not up yet (your case may be different). In that case, I'd expect MetroPCS(Tmo) to eventually put the MEID onto their blacklist. The carriers used to honor each others' blacklists, which could cause Vz to shut off service in the future.
That said, I bought a craigslist Boost G4 a few years ago, which was not accepted by Sprint but has worked fine on Tmo and ATT ever since. So maybe they are not sharing blacklists anymore.
So I look at the ebay link, did you paid 64$ to unlock this device? really
Did u just have a Verizon sim card that u put in the phone? Because I have the same phone and I got it unlocked thru metro but I tried to use a Verizon sim card thru straight talk and it didnt work. Would I just have to get a sim card straight thru verizon and do it that way? Where I'm at I don't get very good service thru t mobile but other ppl have great service with Verizon

For anyone interested. The updated terms through metro for unlocking the carrier on an Android just involves paying more than $100 on your phones bill.
My A20 is free to unlock in about 10 days or so.
MetroPCS version of the A20
Have you activated the MetroPCS version of the A20 before you sent IMEI to unlock it, mine was not activated. as per my knowledge, Verizon SIM cards work with the following phones such as Verizon iPhone, Verizon Galaxy phone or other unlocked CDMA phones. and it won't be compatible with ATT or GSM phones. I want to get my hands on new MetroPCS as my last phone was way too old and wanted to know whether MetroPCS open near me or not.
