I was running a rooted installation of 5.1.9 with TWRP as recovery. I updated TWRP to 3.2.3 by downloading the zip to storage and flashing. Now it won't boot to OS. I'm not sure what I screwed up here.
Go to the reboot menu inside TWRP and check what slot you are on, try switching it to the alternate and see if that boots. Did you make ANY other changes than the TWRP flash? Also did you flash the image or the zip?
Flash Magisk after you have the update of twrp on the phone than its works.
I've been away for about a year so I'm behind on everything right now. I just flashed a factory image to get back to Android 8.1 and set my phone up from scratch. I would like to install TWRP and Magisk but have some questions..
TWRP. Do I just find the latest TWRP for this phone and the process is the same as before? Fastboot flash twrp img and then install TWRP zip?
Magisk: I have never used it before so I'm not to familiar at all. From what I can tell I just download the zip and install via twrp? Is there a specific version I should be looking for for the Pixel on 8.1 or will the latest from the Magisk forum work?
I've searched around and keep seeing random issues so I'm wondering if it's as straight forward as mentioned above. I see posts about people trying to install TWRP and Magisk and bootlooping and stuff like that. Thanks!!
Hello look here for the latest Recovery. https://twrp.me/google/googlepixel.html
Flash the TWRP image over the PC.
fastboot boot recovery TWRP.img
Then Flash it via TWRP. (the zip file on your sdcard).
The device has an A and B Partition. It would Flash on both.
If you Flash an custom Rom you Flash it on A Partition you must Flash TWRP.zip again. Reboot the device. After an reboot to Recovery you on B Partition automatically. Here you can Flash Magisk and other zips like custom Kernel or other.
If you Flash the custom Rom on B Partition you must flash magisk and other stuff on A Partition.
With Magisk 18.0 stable, some people have bootloops when flashing TWRP.
Best thing to do is just boot TWRP img when needed instead of flash the zip, maybe this has been fixed with latest canary builds but it's better boot the image just to be sure
Hi
In every rom thread I see about a million different answers on how to properly install the rom. Usually the official instructions are very vague. I've been flashing roms for years but this ab partition is very confusing to me. I just got my oneplus 6 a few days ago. It would be great if someone very knowledgeable in how to do this could make a how to guide for both stock and custom roms. I think it would really help everyone and threads for each rom wouldn't be full of people asking it over and over (and getting different answers). Thank you devs for all that you do.
Custom if you don't know if you have the recommend base installed to both slots:
Flash OOS
Flash twrp
Reboot to twrp
Flash OOS
Flash twrp
Reboot to twrp
Wipe data, dalvik cache
Flash custom
Flash twrp
Reboot to twrp
Flash gapps
Flash magisk
Boot system
Custom update:
Flash updated custom rom
Flash twrp
Reboot to twrp
Flash gapps (not needed, but updated gapps is most likely better to use anyhow..)
Flash magisk.
From custom back to OOS:
Info: Format data needed because you will trigger encryptionsince you're on different securety patch. This is also the same way to go from beta branch of oos to stable since the securety patches is lower (in general) on stable.
How to:
Boot twrp
Plug phone in to pc and take backup of everything
When done format data
Transfer oos, twrp, magisk to phone
Flash oos
Flash twrp
Reboot to twrp
Flash magisk
Update oos from... Let's say 9.0.4 to 9.0.5
From Twrp:
Flash oos
Flash twrp
Reboot to twrp
Flash magisk
Boot
From oos:
Use ota update, let it install until it asks you to reboot.. DON'T DO IT.
instead go to magisk and search for "a/b" one module will be found, install it. DON'T REBOOT
Go to main screen of magisk and press install, install, install to inactive slot (after ota) when it's done you can reboot.
General ****ups:
Don't boot after update?
Flash magisk uninstaller
Try to boot (yes.. Without magisk)
If it boots you know it was magisk issue, most likely you had substratum overlays installed or modules that messed it up.
Reboot to twrp and flash magisk again and set up your modules one by one or apply themes or whatever you do with your root.
Hey everyone,
My TWRP has been erased from the phone and all I did was update magisk to the latest version (v 20). I'm on Android Pie, why did that happen? I can boot the phone and everything looks fine, it's just that TWRP is gone.
Should I just install it again ? Will I lose data if I install latest TWRP ?
THanks
Hmm.. i dont know what's happened to yours.. but i also updated my magisk to v20. And all.is well.. when i checked thru it a while ago... I can still boot to twrp..
Are you using the v70 twrp?? Try flashing it again via magisk.. be sure to flash magisk.again after that.. ??

No, I was using an old version of TWRP, don't remember what it was exactly, but it wasn't the latest one for sure.
What would be the correct steps to flash TWRP and Magisk so my phone boots up and I don't lose data?
Boot to twrp using fastboot then install twrp and magisk then proceed to reboot to system

same here. can't permanetly install twrp as recovery
Same here... I tried to install TWRP again and, at a certain point, phone couldn't even boot. I had to fastboot boot img, flash installer and then magisk 19.3. Now it all works
I was already on 3.3.1-70 ofc

looks like there is an issue with the latest magisk update. We'll have to wait for an update to the magisk or twrp so TWRP can stick
To fix it i booted into twrp then installed the last rom i was using (pie) then flashed twrp.zip, rebooted into recovery then installed magisk 19.4. you'll have to re-install your modules and re enable your apps that used root.
so since I'm using PIE 9.5.13. Just install the full zip of 9.5.13 through local storage > And then flash twrp and then magisk through twrp? Will there be data loss?
I got twrp back, in magisk by install twrp.
magic download I run flash the twrp and recovery is back
there was no any data loss in my case
For those have the same issue, here is the solution without flashing a new ROM.
https://github.com/topjohnwu/Magisk/issues/1920
from bootloader mode execute
fastboot flash boot boot.img (the stock boot.img)
boot twrp image (I used .70 unified)
fastboot boot twrp.img
flash twrp-installer.zip
flash magisk.zip (I flashed 19.4)
Enjoyyyyy
PS: you can get your corresponding stock boot.img from

Thank you.....
New to the OP7 Pro and this post saved me... I got my device last week and Magisk v20 was current and removed TWRP.... There is a Magisk 21 update is that safe or just say right here?
Ive tried uninstalling magisk using the un-installer and no go. Ive tried booting into twrp then flashing the twrp zip then rebooting into recovery and it goes to the stock recovery. How do i get back TWRP?? Im on Pie and was using twrp .65
NVM: I had to re-flash 9.5.11 then twrp then reboot then magisk 19.4
I am in your same situation oneplus7.
Currently I was with twrp 3.3.1.1 but there is no way to catch any recovery. By flashing the image either version 1/65/70 (more current) by fastboot it enters correctly img you access twrp to later flash the zip But it never gets installed.
I tried to uninstall using img twrp Magisk zip uninstaller and install the 19.3 / 20v uninstall it completely and flash back to zip twrp but I am in a dead end.
Right now I am with Magisk v20 root edxposed and everything goes phenomenally as a result that I am going to "peel" without having twrp for my backups or anything.
Anyone have any idea how to install twrp again?
boot into twrp.img then flash the last rom you were using, then flash twrp.zip, reboot into recovery and install magisk 19.4. After reboot you will have to enable all your rooted apps again and install your magisk modules again.
