App updates hang / delayed notifications - Samsung Galaxy Note 10 Questions & Answers

Recently on my Note 10+ (SM-N975U1) running stock Pie and Dec 1 2019 update, I have been experience 2 issues.
Notifications for some apps are delayed
App updates hang on Google Play Store
For the app updates, they stall with "Download Pending" or the download stalls with <100% complete.
Resolution steps that have NOT worked
Clearing cache and data for Google Play Store
Rebooting phone
Rebooting into Safe Mode
Changing from Wifi to Cell Network Data and vice versa
Stop/starting app updates
Current Workaround
Closing/swiping the Google Play Store and opening it again. It will eventually complete downloading after multiple attempts and install/update an app - you will have to repeat this continuously for every app you want to install or update.
Is there anyway to debug this without doing a complete reset?

This is a problem I've had on many phones over the last few years. It took me a while to figure it out but it's bluetooth related. More specifically, I had the "Dynamic Lock" option enabled on my Windows 10 work laptop (which basically just locks my pc when my phone gets far enough away). I disabled this and now all my notifications come immediately and play store updates work as they should. I realize that you may not have that enabled and if that is the case then turn off your bluetooth for a while and see what happens. It worked for me and several others on the samsung community forum.

Thank you! I turned off Bluetooth but nothing happened but after I rebooted with Bluetooth off everything started to work again. Is there a permanent fix for this? I am assuming turning back on Bluetooth will cause this to happen again? The strange thing this never happened to my Note 8.

I have no idea why this happens. What I do know I have had this issue on LG phones, Pixels, and Motorola's. It isn't a Samsung thing. I think it's an Android Bluetooth issue.

This is an old thread - but in case someone else finds it, I came across someone's suspicions in another thread that their Plantronics headset was causing some kind of problem with their Bluetooth. I began unplugging my Savi headset when not in use and it seems to help... YMMV.
This has been going on since Pie; made me upgrade from my Note 8 to Note 10 and it came right back. Infuriating.
You may also want to try to rub a lucky stone and do some chanting as well, because it's about as effective as hoping for a fix after all this time.

[Q] Delayed push notifications - anyone else having this issue?

I previously had a Samsung Galaxy S3 that ran Android 4.1.2. Push notifications would come through pretty much instantly.
Now that I have my Nexus 5, I'm noticing that push notificiations are delayed. For example, I might receive an email on my PC saying that someone has posted on my Facebook timeline, but a notification doesn't pop up on my phone for 10-15 minutes later. Sometimes I get no notifications for a while because they're delayed, then the notification sound on my phone will go off 3 or 4 times in a row as a bunch of notifications from different apps have all arrived at once.
Also, sometimes I got no notification at all. For instance, I sold an item on eBay and usually I would get a notification that it has sold. On this particular occasion, no notification appeared. The same has happened with Facebook. Sometimes I will go to Facebook and find that a friend has written on my timeline, yet I didn't receive a notification about it on the phone.
I Googled this issue and found it was a problem that plagued the Nexus 4, so I'm wondering if it also affects the Nexus 5 too. Does anyone else have this issue with the Nexus 5? Is there any fix for it?
I get this too, but not very often. Most of the time I find my phone gets notifications before my PC or other phone does. But there are occasions, particularly when I'm not on WiFi, when I either get delayed notifications, or I won't get them at all, until I reconnect to WiFi.
It's been happening to me, including when I was running totally stock w/ locked bootloader. I'm on Sprint. Not sure if it's a data issue or phone issue.
Turning off wifi optimization solved my delayed corporate email (outlook) notification.
Thanks for the replies.
I'm having this issue while connected to Wi-Fi, although I haven't tested to see if the issue occurs via my mobile network as well. I have tried 2 factory resets, but that didn't fix it.
It's almost like, when the screen is off and the phone sleeps, it loses the ability to receive push notifications, but then after a while it suddenly regains it and that causes a bunch of notifications to arrive at once.
I've contacted Google support about it, so I'll see what they say.

Any update on this? What did they say? I have the same problem and it's driving me crazy.. I came from GS3 and notifications were instantaneous... on this one I have to open lets say Whatsapp every other minute to check if someone sent me a message... and even sometimes I open the app and it takes some time for the internet to "wake up" and finally refresh the app... it sucks... I would return my phone if this can't be fixed easily..
So any update or solution on this would be gratly appreciated. Thanks

Google ended up offering me a replacement phone, but that didn't go too well. The new phone they sent wouldn't connect to my Wi-Fi network, so I contacted them to return it but they told me I had to return my original phone, get another replacement, and only then could I return the second one. Obviously, each time they sent out a phone they were putting holds on my credit card for £xxx so in the end I phoned up and complained. To cut a long story short, I still have the original phone and I haven't decided what to do yet.

Interesting, I have just turned this off on mine too to see.
I only get delays when I am connected to my home wifi (2.4 or 5GHz). Maybe it is because I only have a 4mb ADSL connection ...
I will check tonight if that fixes it and/or also try the PNF app.
any update or fix on this yet? this is driving me mad, every time I get a notification on twitter or my email my idol picks it up first and my phone gets it 8-9 minutes later even if I'm using it at that moment, anybody else get the delay even while using the device?
All of a sudden I have started facing this problem since the past few days

I am using Moto g and I think its an issue with KitKat rather than with the hardware or the network. My push notifications are being delayed and that wasnt the case with JB 4.2 on my earlier phones.
Very frustrating
I've not been getting google hangouts messages until 20-30 mins later. sometimes i never get a notification, but if i check hangouts i see a new message. Another times i only get the message on the computer, but never on the phone. if i go and clear the app data new messages show up
My push notifications were coming through very quickly up until 2 weeks ago. I have not changed devices, carriers, or installed any new apps. One day they were coming through fine, now they are delayed by up to 30 minutes. My phone has not installed any OS updates either.
I have factory reset my phone, once restoring from cloud, the other not restoring at all and setting up the phone from scratch. This is really irritating. It does it on mobile networks or wifi.
Moto G is frustrating
It's frustrating.
I searched google without obtaining a solution. Moto G and sometimes I get delayed notifications and not others.
Facebook does not even make the notifications. In Whatsapp I have to open it every 2 minutes to see if someone has written. What not to do. I'm bored with this phone.
No solution or google and motorola solve it. Cursed kitkat!
Anything new? This problem is old and comes from the Nexus 4. I really am very sad about it, not PNF solving this.
I've been pulling my hair out trying to figure this out. It definitely started after i upgraded my s2 to kitkat rom back in december. At first i thought it had to do with the PM sleep modes but none of them make a bit of difference. Ive goggled it to death and this thread is the only one ive found.
Currently im going to try the suggestion on the first page to turn off wifi optimization as my phone only does this on wifi. when i use mobile data everything works as expected
EDIT: WIFI optimization makes no difference
Push Notifications
I have faced this problem on both my S4 and S5 on sprint. I think it has to do with sprint closing open tcp connections prematurely, which causes push notifications to fail.
Running the app Root-Push Notifications Fixer, or Unrooted version has worked for me. The root version seems to be more reliable.

Strange Bluetooth issue

Since I got my phone on release day and I haven't been able to use it to make calls in my 2012 mazdaspeed3. My other phones have worked fine so I thought I needed a software update on my radio. Well everything is up to date and that didn't fix it.
The problem is when I make or receive a phone call the Bluetooth will connect and disconnect every 5-10 seconds. This makes it impossible to talk on the phone.
So I have tried stock roms, sense based roms, and all the CM based roms and they all did the same thing. Yesterday I was trying to figure it out so I sat in my car in the garage and the phone was in a constant connect disconnect loop. During this time I was disabling apps and services hoping to stop it when all of a sudden I turned off WiFi and it stopped. I then called my wife and had a 10 min conversation with no problems. So I now run a tasker profile that when Bluetooth connects it turns off WiFi so I can make calls. The problem is I have a nexus 7 dash mounted and I use the WiFi hotspot to run apps.
So after all that, does this sound like a hardware issue or a software issue? Should I return my phone for an exchange? Thanks for the help

Weird...
My M8 should be here today and I have a 2010 Mazdaspeed3. I hope this isn't an issue with all of them. Although, my MS3 has a long history of it's bluetooth not getting along with HTC phones.
Did you have any issues?

So far, no. It took me like 20 minutes to get the phone to pair but once that was done it hasn't disconnected at all. I have music constantly streaming through Bluetooth to the car and I've taken a couple calls with no issue.
having the same issue here. My vehicle is a 2013 Ford F150 with Sync.
Worked up until about a day ago .. Now i can't get stock or aosp roms to lock in bluetooth

Have you tried clearing data and cache in settings?
the Red Viper ROM
I am having the same issue.
It is connecting and disconnecting repeatedly, and it is SUPER annoying because it essentially renders my pebble watch useless.
For a while i was using the Automatic Link (car link) and was getting 'bluetooth share has stopped' errors, but found that when I stopped using the Automatic app it helped a little bit (stopped giving me the 'share has stopped' error), but it still connects and disconnects repeatedly.
The weirdest thing about this is that when I first got this phone I wasn't having this problem, everything was working fine for the first month or so, but it seems to keep getting worse.
I have tried wiping cache, dalvik, fixing permissions, etc. and have not had any luck, but I don't want to do a complete wipe of all my data and lose my text messages, etc. unless ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY, since there are images and things in there that I continually refer to for work, and I have not found that titanium backup restores them very reliably.
Has anybody had any luck with this issue? Could it be a defective device? It seems to me like it should be a software problem because it is not something I was having problems with from the start...
I am very frustrated with this, even more so because I love this phone so much. I have never had a phone that I liked as much as this one, usually the first thing I do is install an AOSP rom, but I even like Sense 6 in some ways. With Nova Launcher's 'OK Google' hotword support this phone is a dream come true... if only the bluetooth worked.

you need to let HTC backup app take care of backing up your texts etc...what if you dropped the phone in the toilet tonight or got pushed into a pool?
this app is free...will backup your stuff daily or on demand and will restore email accounts/texts/desktop/apps/blinkfeed settings etc.

install that, backup to the cloud (uses Google drive) and then continue troubleshooting without fear of losing stuff.

Replaced battery in my N5 - now no trusted face or trusted locations

This seems very strange. my N5, stock and unrooted (5.01) battery was getting bad so I replaced it with a unit from ebay. It looked like a genuine OEM battery but I suspect it wasn't.
And despite all the videos on Youtube etc. saying you can prise the back off the N5 without breaking anything I managed to break two tabs
Anyway after I put it all back my first heartstopping moment was NFC had stopped working, both for charging and for communications. A quick Google search revealed that was because the back had not snapped on properly so the antenna in the back was not contacting the motherboard contacts properly. A quick press of the back the case, a click and all was well,
But now the phone won't do trusted face or locations which it did before. If I go to trusted face and choose improve face matching I receive an error Couldn't start finding your face. And now face unlock never works as well as trusted location (my home).
I can't believe a new battery would affect that but perhaps somebody in these forums might have some knowledge of this problem?
I will wait for 5.1 to see if it fixes the problem, else I guess I have to live with it.
Thanks
Sounds like maybe the front facing camera connection might have been disturbed during battery installation.
If it was me, I'd go into the camera app and see if the front facing camera is working properly.
If not, pull the back off again and check around the camera for anything loose. Verify your antenna connections.
Best of Luck
That one of the first things I tried and the camera is fine. Also GPS works fine so trusted location should work.

As you mentioned, waiting for the 5.1 OTA is going the be the best option short of factory resetting and losing all your data.
Hopefully the OTA will fix it for you when it arrives to your device.
If you prefer not to wait on Google, you could Download the 5.1 OTA and ADB sideload it using the STOCK recovery.

The problem is not from your battery.
Trusted places and faces are broken after the last Google Play update on a number of Nexus devices after they added the "on-body detection."
Some users get it to work, some temporarily, but it is not an issue with your new battery. From the forums i read, some users (not Nexus 5 ) got it to work by turning smart lock off and on, re-doing your locations in google maps, side loading the Google Play Services apk, uninstalling the Google Play Services and reverting it to previous version (mine is grayed out.)
I notice huge battery drain coming from the Google Play Services then I disconnected the GPS and it was no longer draining. I am assuming it's having trouble or a bug where it's searching my location for the Trusted places and draining my battery. This is only an assumption though. Hopefully it will be fixed in a future update. I still have not found a fix for my N5 or N7 2013 yet.
Just so others are not put off ive changed my Battery with no issues and have taken the back off 6 times. No clips broke. It is important to make sure all clips are pushed home and you should gently press the back allover as there are a lot of connections on the back that need to make contacts with the board

Not sure if that applies to me. I had the problem after I replaced the battery (though it could be coincidental) but before 5.1 where I understand is when on-body detection was first implemented.
I managed to get trusted places to work by walking around my section and getting the phone to recognise a new location which is basically the same as my home but with a different name. That seems to work but I still cannot get face detection, either with unlock or improve matching.
I found the reason for my large battery drain, it was one of my weather apps refreshing through Google play Services. I also did a temp fix for Trust Places like the other user did. I added two places next to my house, close enough to all cross each other. That did the trick for now.
Here's what worked for me
I got a phone call when my Nexus 5 was locked and instantly Trusted Face crashed and gave me a force close message. Here's how I managed to fix it:
1) First, I removed the existing face data and turned off Trusted Face.
2) From Settings --> Apps --> All, I found Trusted Face and Cleared Cache, Data, Force Stopped the app and then disabled & enabled the app.
3) Rebooted the phone holding the power button (Not through the menu)
4) Turned on Trusted Face and registered my face.
5) Then I had coffee, but that's not relevant to the case.
Note: I know some of the above steps are unnecessary and repetitive, but nothing else worked for me.
Good Luck !
Thanks. I tried that and now Trusted Face is working again.

Bluetooth audio streaming problems after Oreo Update

Well I just upgraded to new Oreo and guess what? I can't use my Bluetooth headset anymore (Blue Tiger Elite). The audio gets distorted or breaking up. Failing to connect or disconnect to/from the phone. Was working fine before update. Tinkering Bluetooth settings in developer mode didn't help since they will stay unchanged after you open the menu again.
Have anyone encountered same problem?
When im paired up with the stereo in my work truck i noticed a pop every now and then.

Audio streaming on Nougat for me was perfect all the time, now since my Oreo update I've experienced constant stuttering and/or growly distortion for a moment at least every ten seconds. Also 'Settings' keeps closing whenever I'm accessing any of my apps when changing permissions for example. It couldn't even pull up my app list, so I've done a backup and deleted at least 300 of my apps, and only now things are slightly better. I don't understand why everything is lagging so much now when before the update, all was perfect.. Help?

Yes, I'm having the same issue with bluetooth connection and the same Blue Tiger Elite. Just got off the phone with Verizon tech person he is thinking my headset is old enough technology that it won't stay connected.

Phone functionality intermittently lost after upgrading to P

If my phone is on for more than 10 minutes, I lose calling functionality. When I try to call someone, it freezes and the Pixel becomes unresponsive, forcing me to hold down power for 10 seconds for a reboot. After this, it works just fine for another 10 or so minutes.
I have no idea when calling functionality begins to be lost because I can still send and receive texts, but I can't make or receive calls. I don't even get a wave of missed calls or anything when it works after a reboot.
Google Assistant has it's own issues when this happens too. It won't come up with "Hey, Google" at all. When I long press the home button, Google Assistant comes up, but I just get the floating dots. Fortunately, it doesn't freeze when I try this. Restart the phone and I'm good for about 10 minutes or so. I tried installing 3rd party calling apps, but the problem persists.
Hoping this is a Pie issue and waiting for the next security patch, will likely do a sideload flash-all. Any suggestions as to what the problem is from? Could my SIM card be the problem? Any apps I could try to help narrow down the issue? I had no issues with Oreo.
Thanks in advance.
Tried rebooting in safe mode. Slightly similar results: works fine for about 10 minutes but then it's just the mic not working. I can make and receive calls with out the phone freezing, but no mic.

I have a similar issue with a used Pixel I purchased. I couldn't place or receive calls, with everything else working fine. Did the prerequisite online searches with results finding most everyone experiencing this issue chalking it up to hardware but I'm still thinking software. I tried a different phone app (drupe-enabled as default) with some success, then the problem returned (a few days later, rarely get/make calls). The default google phone app (version 23.0) fails every time. Currently looking into TWRP/Root and hoping to eliminate certain default apps to experiment further. Will be keeping an eye on this post! :cyclops:
--- Three weeks later ---
Could there be an issue within google play services with phone dialer app (any/or stock app)?
After continued issues I parked phone in drawer a bit then pulled out and tinkered with a few weeks later. Tried to isolate problem using logcat and on a hunch I flashed TWRP and a custom ROM but NOT any gapps package. Sticking sim in and using the built in phone app (Resurrection Remix -com.android.dialer) it works without issue. What? I flashed gapps (correct version/etc) and sure enough the problem returned. Went back to rom minus gapps, works fine. So, with straight up stock rom - stock phone dialer fails, custom rom - it works without a gapps package but not with.

I have a similar issue with a used Pixel I purchased. I couldn't place or receive calls, everything else working fine. Did the prerequisite online searches with results finding most everyone experiencing this issue chalking it up to hardware but I'm still thinking software. I tried a different phone app (drupe-enabled as default) with some success, then the problem returned (about 5 days later). The default google phone app (version 23.0) fails every time. Currently looking into TWRP/Root and hoping to eliminate certain default apps to experiment further. Will be keeping an eye on this post! :cyclops:

Went back to Oreo before I had the problems and... problems persist. I'm sad. I had the privilege of speaking to someone from Google Support who was very knowledgeable. Unfortunately, my best option from the rep was to take it in to one of their authorized repair places.
Are you guys on Verizon? I'm having this problem with my dad's pixel on vzw.

--- Three weeks later ---
Could there be an issue within google play services with phone dialer app (any/or stock app)?
See my updated post (# 3) for what I've tried since..
Vzw ended up replacing my dad's phone through extended warranty. I talked to Google for awhile. Multiple factory resets, factory image installs, tried older phone apks. Nothing worked.

Older/newer phone dialer apps didn't work for me either ... custom rom and eliminating google play services did (no gapps). I'm still tinkering with the device ... installing frequently used apps using F-droid and Yalp, will test it. Not quite sure why but it works.
I ended up flashing Lineageos for Microg, presents it's own problems in the learning experience but it works.
Nothing ever worked in the end. No, not with Verizon. Bought through Canadian carrier called Fido.
Called Google tech and they weren't overly helpful. I started a chat with a Google Tech and they suggested I take it to UBreakIFix. They did a free diagnostic test and I referenced https://support.google.com/pixelphone/forum/AAAAb4-OgUsIW_gxTpXX3s/?hl=by that thread. Said they'd fix it for free even thought I was out of warranty. Got a new motherboard and my phone works like a charm.
