Fastboot showing Software Status Modified - HTC U11 Questions & Answers

Hello XDA,
Been a long time since I rooted phone, last one was my HTC One M8.
Just a quick question on the U11, if the software status in fastboot says software modified and there is Security Checking failed in the first bootloader menu, that does mean that the phone has had the bootloader unlocked right? I bought the phone thinking it was brand new and have had no reason to suspect otherwise until I went to wipe the cache partition this morning and saw those messages.
Just looking for confirmation if that is indeed what I think it is.

Pretty much what my unlocked phone says also ?

Have you rooted your phone? I am trying to find reasons why some U11 phones are showing as device not certified in the Play Store. I have never rooted my device and the reseller has confirmed that my U11 came direct from HTC so they did not handle it. The only thing that we can come up with is that by flashing the RUU file it has changed the software status to modified and that this is tripping the flag in the Play Store. I have no way to verify this so I am information hunting. The last RUU I flashed is this one:
RUU_OCEAN_WHL_O80_SENSE90GP_MR_NA_Gen_Unlock_2.42.617.1

[Q] Unlocking bootloader without HTCDev

Hi,
Would it be possible to unlock the bootloader without going thru HTCDev?
I found this thread regarding a universal HTC unlocker here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=24324567
Would this work for the One XL?
HTC Dev site does not show One X, Select “All other supported models” if you cannot find your phone in this list
Has anyone done this with the One X

This will likely work, but my question was about unlocking the bootloader without using HTCDev.
This is even more important now, as reports are that HTC is denying warranty if the bootloader is unlocked via their site.

I know, I didn't want to start a thread asking that. was just wondering since it is not listed. I wouldn't use that yet, seems like within a week, we will have s-off and more

Tried the universal HTC unlocker and it didn't work. Nothing wrong with my phone either after it failed either.

Bummer. Thanks for trying though.
Hopefully the superb devs on board will figure out a way to do this.
I think it's very possible using the same method, it just needs to be adjusted for the new partition layout of the newer HTC devices.
everything i have read about HTCDev unlocker is that if you return the phone for warranty work with a custom ROM loaded, they will deny it.
BUT, if you have the bootloader unlocked and running the stock rom (return to stock before sending it in), they will process the warranty work as usual.
I still want to find a way around HTCDev, but, just letting you know what i have read

This person had warranty service denied, despite the fact that he flashed the stock ROM before sending it in:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1631466
Apparently, they have some way of knowing a custom ROM was flashed, even if its not on there when you send it in. Makes me wonder, even if an alternate method to unlock the bootloader (without HTC Unlock) is developed, will they still know you loaded a custom ROM in the past, and refuse warranty service?
On a previous device I'd owned, after S-OFF they found a way to get rid of the device specific "TAMPERED" logo in the bootloader. I suspect there would be a way to do so on this device as well.
I can't remember which device it was, though...

Its probably a combination of the device being registered for unlock on HTCDev and something on the device.
I'm pretty sure, sooner or later, the devs will figure out a way to return the device to a "clean" state. All the more reason I would love for a way to get this done without going thru official channels.

cause of illegal software,
Look,
We are contacting you concerning the HTC One X which you returned to us due to there being a yellow tint on the display. As you are aware we sent the handset to the HTC service centre as it was not possible to have it classed as a DOA (dead on arrival), due to the bootloader being unlocked and illegal software having been installed. The HTC service has confirmed that illegal software has been installed on the handset at some time by yourself resulting in the warranty being invalidated. Simply unlocking and relocking the bootloader would not have invalidated the warranty.

When you flash custom software it trips a switch that displays "Tampered" on the HBOOT screen, whether or not you flash stock back on and relock the bootloader.

Actually read the posts though. The guy didn't send it to HTC.
HTC will still service the device, even after an unlock.
OK, on topic... I just looked through the HTCdev process for the first time. It seems that we should start by comparing device identifier tokens and unlock files, right?
Perhaps there is a pattern to them or we can figure out how to generate one from the other? Maybe the device identifier token has nothing to do with the unlock file apart from HTC wanting to record a unique identifier of the phone?
Has anybody tried using an unlock file from a different user's phone (of the same make/model)? That would be a huge break-through if it was that easy!
I would think somebody would have tried this, but up until now, nobody seemed to have a problem following HTC's process to get their bootloader unlocked.
Thanks,
Billy

If you read the whole chat conversation, the tech was instructed to call it "illegal" software. Doesn't mean it was in fact illegal.

Hi guys im new getting my one x from ma bell, in a few days. Im coming from an amaze, amaze forums.
You guys need to understand, htc WILL know if anything was "tampered" with.
Most software bares a timestamps, or something similar that will let them know when and what the phone was flashed with. So even if you reflash, its going to show a timestamp of sorts.
Htc put the disclaimer of warranty denial to give them an option im sure.
I returned several phones rooted, bricked to T-Mobile, and they never said anything. Its like a car, the manufacturer can void your warranty for any "mods" you do....
I hope every one here gets some patience, and not worry about rooting, bootloader unlock , bloatware.
For now it is what it is... and it's only been
... a day???
We will get this ***** unlocked, romed and kick some ass... just gonna take time... and from the looks of it we have some brilliant devs here! .
Be patient and give it some time guys, check out the amaze forums and see what happens when people start whining about stuff going to slow or not happening ( not calling any one a whiner, so chill)... the devs start disappearing.
Ok im done... probably not the right place for intros but ah well!!!
And remember
.its just a gdam phone!

[Q] Need to restore to stock in order to RMA

Hi all, any help would be much appreciated.
I'm from Canada and bought the HTC One S from Expansys a few days ago. It was compatible with my Rogers network, however, I JUST switched over to Bell and unfortunately, this version of the phone, while unlocked, is not compatible with Bell's network. As a result, Expansys has agreed to let me return the phone, however, during the short time that I was using it, I had rooted and installed a custom rom (WITHOUT backing up the stock; boneheaded move, I know). The phone seems to be the European version from France, so I was thinking of restoring to this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1543588 however, I remember reading an article on Rootzwiki about how our phones are marked once we unlock the bootloader. Is there a way to remedy this? I'm afraid Expansys will reject my return if they notice that I've "tampered" with it and would like to return it fully to stock, unrooted, completely original everything.
Again, if anyone can direct me how to proceed, I would be so grateful. I have two weeks to send my phone back.
Thanks guys!
Thanks
I would love to know the answer to this as well. Kinda in the same boat...My main concern is removing CWM..Anyone have any info on this?

Based on all my readings thus far, it seems removing the "tampered" message is not possible yet.
In order to remove CWM and revert back to stock, I recommend hasoon2000's All-In-One Toolkit: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1604677
There is an option to flash the stock recovery.

You can just do the following:
Remove root - can be easily done via superSU app from the settings menu, where is mentiones full unroot
Flash stock recovery
Relock bootloader.
After that if you want, just find the correct RUU file for your phone it it will flash it. The word tempered will go away, but it will just say "relocked"
I don't think that expansys will access the bootloader to check....Most employees are not tech savvy...As long as they power the phone on, without problems....you should be fine.
you will always see the brand relocked. untill we have al full s-off it wil be like this always.
just flash the correct ruu it came with,
if the phone works normal they wont have a reason to look at the bootloader.

I just bought HTC Chacha today. I am really luving this phone, but need some assistance from the members over here for the following questions:

2) On my phone it still shows android market place: How can I get Google Play app?? Will it upgrade automatically or will I have to manually update it and how??
3) Any help with the dialer bug thing?? Its taking 95% in my battery usage thing I tried all of the suggestions mentioned here http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=17383, but still the dialer thing is using 95%

Is your phone locked to a certain network or originally sold by a network? The network may not have bothered to push out the latest update, in which case you need to unlock your bootloader to get it.

If turning off the sensor based stuff doesn't fix it, you're stuck with the problem as long as you're on the stock ROM sadly. CM7 ROMs don't have this issue and I'm personally looking into fixing it by putting the stock AOSP dialler in my Sense ROM. I'll see if that works before putting it in a final release but it's a possible fix.
4) Please suggest some awesome apps/games for my chacha.

Awesome apps: any file browser (personally I like ASTRO but everyone has their preference)... Other than that all my favourites are root apps
I recommend just going through the Play Store and seeing what apps you like the look of. You probably won't get too far with games on this phone though TBH.

My phone is not locked to any network, I mean I bought the phone unlocked. Still I am not able to update to the latest version.
Thanks for the link for google play store, I will right away install it.
As for the dialer bug thing, after doing all the things mentioned, I am getting like 12 hr run on 100% full battery charge with moderate browsing with wifi. Is this ok?? I mean should I be getting more battery backup??
Now I am totally new to the android rooting scene and I have been reading the xda forums for unlocking the bootloader for chacha and stuff. I checked that my phone is S-ON (dont know what that means, but checked it as it was mentioned in some thread lolz). So does that mean I wont be able to root my phone and install cwf??
Also I want to install cwf on my phone and I checkd out ur cwf and I would like to try that out. But will the sense theme be still there on cwf?? as I really like it and dont want to get stock android theme on my chacha if I install cfw.

If you stay on stock, just wait and see if it gets the update. If it's unlocked it should notify you of it eventually.

No, rooting does not help you install paid apps for free either. If you just root the device without installing custom ROMs you can indeed still use the device just fine.
hey i was unlocking the bootloader frm the htc dev site, and it gave me an error.
It said my current version is 1.20.720.1 and i will first have to update to the latest version to use the ruu tool.
Now as I mentioned that i am not able to update my phone to the latest version, how can i manually update my phone to the latest version so that i can unlock the bootloader and root my device?? BTW i am frm india so i will need the latest version for india.
You have to update the HBOOT not the OS. The process should have a list of links for updaters, choose the one you need and run it on your computer and follow the instructions.
i downloaded the ruu tool from the htcdev site. after i run it, and i do next, next, next...the phone restarts and stays on the htc log screen. after some time i get an error message saying: ur software is not updated and gives error.
What's the error? Did the updater match your phone?
no software update, hence cannot unlock bootloader
I am facing the exact same problem.
The HTC chacha I bought here(India) came with Android 2.3.3 and firmware version 1.20.720.1. When I try software update, the phone says no software updates available.
I tried to unlock the boot loader but the RRU says you are not running the latest software, please update the ROM.
ERROR[190]: ROM IS NOT UPDATED
The error dialog screenshot is attached.
Can anyone tell me how to update to 1.57.720.1, so that i can unlock my bootloader?
My CID is HTC__38

I sent an email to HTC customer care regarding the update problem. They are asking me to take my phone to a authorized service center to update from 2.3.3 to 2.3.5. (Also says, charges might apply because I tried to unlock boot-loader)
This really sucks :-(. I was hoping they would suggest a offline method to update the phone myself.

Well if the update isn't coming up then as others have said, take it to HTC and get them to update it I guess. Don't mention bootloader unlocking. Seeing as you didn't actually flash anything to your phone, they won't know.

Either you do that or try and find an official RUU installer for your device and region. I'm searching right now but I can't find it. You need an official exe file, if you can find that for the Indian 2.3.5 update you can do it yourself.
Otherwise, you would have to get S-OFF, that's your only real alternative. For that you need a special clip and it might just be easier to go to HTC and get it done.

I just cant root my phone??? grrrrrrrr

Bought my Huawei G520 direct from China
Never occured to me that it would have no access to google apps
Anyway I found out the bootloader was also locked so i couldn't flash anything (except for those complete roms with INSTALL file)
Sent an email to Huawei with phone details requesting the code to unlock the bootloader
They sent me the code the very next day!!!
With the message "Thanks for supporting Huawei"
Brilliant
but my hopes were soon dashed - the phone *still* wont root??????????????????
I must of tried 10 different root methods and how I haven't bricked it I'll never no - but they all fail at some point
I mean, the bootloader is now definitely UNlocked, (it reports UNLOCKED and used to report LOCKED), it even has clockwork mod on it some how and it works fine, but any attempt to install roms fail
I have Rom Explorer on the phone and that quite clearly says the phone is not rooted???
I dont know whats going on?
Any ideas what else might be locked on it?

It sounds like a filesystem issue, maybe a hardware problem, like bad flash memory. Are you able to install apps and copy files to it?
Did you install CWM, or did it come with it?

[Soft Brick? Help PLS] I bought an HTC One A9 recently and allowed it to update. . .

I hope you like stories because I like telling them.
So, I've been trying to get this phone to work for several weeks now and I'm hoping someone here can help. The backstory is going to make me sound really stupid, but here you go. I bought this phone initially to replace my old Nokia Lumia 710 which is still *functioning*, but lets be honest it needs to be replaced. It cost me $150 if I remember correctly. Well, it worked fine for about a week and then I dropped it and shattered the screen through the LCD layer. I backed up the contents while there was still enough LCD fluid for me to see what I was doing before the whole screen went black.
I then proceeded to take the phone to a repair place where they charged me $200 dollars to replace the screen. Yes, I know I could have just as easily bought one brand new, but the half-off sale was over and I've always been one to fix things instead of replacing them. Of course maybe that will change with this experience. Anyway, when they finally got it back to me and when I turned it on it said there was a software update available. So, I followed the standard procedure and allowed it to download and restart. . . but it got stuck in a loop on the restart. At this point I knew very little about the phone, so I left it at home to die and switched the SIM card back to my Nokia.
Later that day I researched how to 'reset' it, which gave me the instructions for how to put it into bootloader/download mode, and I thought "Well, it still works, I bet they can fix this at the phone repair place". So I charged it, brought it there and showed them that it still worked -sort of- and they told me they would fix it in a day for $30.
A week later they called and said "We can't fix this thing, take it back free of charge". It didn't make any sense to me because the internet made it sound like a 'soft brick' was easy to fix. So I took it back and decided to try fixing it on my own. I downloaded the HTC drivers and got to work. The first thing I found was the HTC official RUU.exe and I tried using it to fix the phone. However, it returned with a 'signature error', which I researched and as far as I can tell it's because the official RUU is nougat and my firmware has the key for marshmallow.
I looked for a RUU.exe that was a marshmallow version, but HTC took down all the downloads that I found links to and no ones seems to have saved it anywhere. Instead I found directions to update manually using a combination of ADB/fastboot/htc_fastboot. I set them up to work on the command line and they all recognize that the phone is connected. I downloaded a marshmallow RUU.zip and tried to flash it, but it failed with the message "main version NOT ALLOWED". I searched around and supposedly it's because the only zips I could find are lower versions than the broken version installed on mine. (something about s-on?)
I then thought that maybe I could update the firmware and then use the official RUU to get it working again. From what I could tell getting a TWRP recovery on there would give me enough access to the phone to allow firmware to be updated. I searched all over for ways to install TWRP, but it failed to flash also. Supposedly I need the bootloader unlocked.
I got an account on HTCDev and started following the directions but the command:
fastboot oem get_identifier_token
Returns an error "last byte is 0x00, disable unlock"
So I guess I can't unlock the bootloader either. . .
The current state of the phone is:
Software Status: Official
Locked
S-ON
Which seems to be the worst case scenario for trying to fix it. Also, just some other info, the OS version is 1.55.617.4
and it's a USA Unlocked version, if that wasn't already described by the OS version. . .
Oh and it's encrypted.
So yeah, I'm giving up today. I already ordered a new phone, however I still think it would be really satisfying to get it working again. You guys are the pros and I am in posession of the most defiant piece of non-functional silicon to ever exist, so if you can tell me how to beat it into submission I will be very happy. Thanks!

There are still several option to fix this phone.
might want to try flashing a newer ruu that is still Marshmallow version like this one https://androidfilehost.com/?fid=24459283995314374 or his one https://androidfilehost.com/?fid=24399994186368579
htc_fastoot oem rebootRUU
htc_fastboot flash zip 2PQ9IMG_HIA_AERO_UL_M601_SENSE7GP_1.56.617.1_signed.zip
htc_fastboot reboot
and there is still the possibility to update your firmware to 2.xx.617.x using a singed firmware.zip file making your phone accept the new ruu signature implemented in Nougat ruu.
Btw you can't unlock your BL because the "allow oem unlock" option was not previously turned on from the "developer option" (this requires a booting OS).
Sweet, you found a Marshmallow ruu!
I'll try it, thanks!
