T-mobile binge on when tethering - General Questions and Answers

Does anyone know how the T-Mobile Binge On (streaming of video and music without using up your high speed data allotment) when tethering? I am using a dedicated phone with 2GB of high speed data that is permanently tethered to a router in my home out in the country. Right now I can play music directly from that phone over bluetooth to a received and I'm pretty sure that's fine. However I'd like to add a smart tv on that wifi and/or chromecast from the phone to that TV (i think the latter case still has the tv do the video streaming). The question is, will T-mo consider that data as part of Binge On or will it go against my high speed usage? If latter, any way around it? I'm fine with getting the reduced quality content if it doesn't burn up my high speed data bucket.

[Q] Need advice on transfer speeds/video recording

Hoping someone could shed some light and/or point me in the right direction. I just go my TF and upgraded to the latest stock firmware from ASUS. I am having two issues that may or may not be unique to me, one being almost a deal breaker for me.
1) My wifi speeds are running below my expectations. I am measuring around 11Mbits/s reads, while using various SMB explorers. I have run internet speed tests that have measured around 20Mbit/s reads from the stock browser though. I am running on a wireless 54 Mbit/s g-router. While I didn't expect 54Mbit/s, I did hope for the 30ishMbit/s I have been getting with various laptops.
My concern mainly lies with video streaming from my NAS as 11 Mbps is borderline for my uses. I am getting those transfer rates from the NAS and from my Win7 setup as well. My hope is that the SMB file sharing apps aren't optimized and I can wait it out and hope to get at least the 20 MBps rates that I am seeing from the internet speed tests. Should I try to throw in a wireless N in to the mix and if so besides WEP (which I assume is limited to 54mbps) is there any other encryption that the TF supports over WiFi? I ask so I can research the best match wireless -n access point for the TF. I don't see the ability to change the authentication/encryption as the 'Advanced' tab on the TF settings is greyed out.
2) I am getting significant audio sync issues while recording video. Playback of video is smoother with the new firmware but I see an occasional stutter. I could live with that if the audio stayed in sync (playing back with built in player and mobo). THis one is not a dealbreaker as I will rarely use the video but I am concerned this is an issue with my device. The realtime playback during recording is terribly stuttery (though this isn't a big deal since the playback is far smoother).
I haven't rooted yet but has anyone used cifs.ko successfully and seen better transfer rates than some of the SMB implementations in terms of transfer rates?
Thanks for any advice on routes to go or just general confirming that these are issues you don't see.
Anyone able to chime in on this for me?
1) It sounds like you need to upgrade your wireless hardware. WEP is easily crackable nowadays by anyone who googles how to do it, and has been for a while. WPA2 is usually a much safer option if your equipment doesnt support it then its probably time for an upgrade. Wireless N routers are pretty cheap nowadays via ebay, so there's not really any reason not to get one (I've bought a few for around £5 each on there). It should increase your throughput dramatically, and increase the range you can use your wifi devices at. I'd also advise setting up MAC filtering and hiding your network from prying eyes if you do all this to make it more secure. Plenty of guides on the net for that, and it's very easy to do.
2) I don't get the audio sync issues you have, but then the quality of the audio via video recording is terrible, so I've not used it much. I've yet to try this, but perhaps plugging a microphone into the headset jack will help with your sync issue, just an idea to try. And if it doesnt help then perhaps another app would.
thanks for the reply.
I will try both suggestions.

Any well known brand (such as Belkin, Netgear, Linksys, Buffalo) will do you fine. Just check out their product page from the manufacturers website before you buy. Things that it should have as basic specs are a NAT firewall, 256bit WPA2 encryption, 2.4ghz operating spectrum and obviously compatibility with your current operating system. An easy to use setup is always a must for those not very confident in their tech abilities.

[Q] Is it possible to have a Local WiFi Hotspot

Is it possible to have a Local WiFi Hotspot? I have a Galaxy S5 with Verizon. Ever since I upgraded I have been struggling on a 6gb data plan. I own an iPad and an Apple TV and wanted to do wireless airplay for presentations. Of course Apple TV requires a WiFi connection to airplay so I was wondering if there was a way to make a local wifi hotspot on a device without using the internet? It would be like having a wireless router that isn't plugged into a modem. I have never seen this brought up before so I figured I might as well see if it is even possible. What do you guys think?Am I crazy for wanting a local hotspot or does this peak anyone interest to explore?

is is possible to have the hotspot running on the phone and data turned off, but i dont know what effect that would have on other transfers through the wifi.
only reason i know this is because i just started using ds battery saver app the other day, and i use the hotspot on my phone a lot. i have it set to turn off mobile data when the phone is off, well this poses a problem as the hotspot is still broadcasting but i have no internet connection. fortunately the developer had already thought of this (for streaming music etc, same issue) and put an adjustable bandwidth sensor on the app, so it wont cut off data when the screen turns off is there is a certain amount of transfer present.
i kinda went a little off your topic, but i thought it relevant to explain how i know it is possible for the nay sayers.

I just tried it out and I can get the hotspot to activate with data on and then go turn data off and it won't automatically turn off my hotspot. I will have to try it with the Apple TV in a few days and see how well it works.

Need to limit wifi bandwidth on Android Mobile Handsets

Hi all,
I have NBN Fibre 100mbps / 40mbps (300GB - 150 peak / 150 off-peak)
Modem/router is Audiocodes MP264
I have an HTC One M7 (rooted) and Galaxy Note Edge (no root)
I need to limit the speed of WIFI that is usable on the handsets as the kids waste the data watching Youtube in 1080p all the time. (so other apps too)
The modem is useless in setting QoS or Traffic Shapping, it cant be done.
Easy option is to change the WIFIs 802.11 to b or g and then the WIFI is only putting out to the devices about 7mbps-15mbps or there abouts rather than the much higher speeds n will provide.
Issues when using b or g is that the Samsung TV and the wifes iPhone will also be restricted.
Is there an application that will restrict WIFI download bandwidth directly on the devices either via a firewall or a WIFI manager app?
All I have been able to find is firewalls that allow or stop internet traffic, or WIFI managers that restrict uploads or tethering.
Can someone suggest any apps that can rate limit the WIFI on the device directly?
Or, is there a Youtube app that you can set the default playback resolution to something low (the official youtube app always goes 1080p via my WIFI)
Thank you
NVM - I have now found OGYouTube - this appears to be working fine, can limit both mobile and WIFI data by default - set to 360p (will use 240p if im feeling real harsh)

Smartphone cable router

Howdy ho!
I believe I have a question that many users here and/or in other forums were trying to ask, but failed to ask properly and got an irrelevant answer. I will try to be honest and clear as possible and hope there is a solution.
What do I have:
Samsung Galaxy Note 5 running Android version 7 with unlimited data plan and 15GB mobile hotspot data, a smart TV and a laptop.
What do I need:
Watch videos and surf internet on my PC monitor or bigscreen TV using my phone's unlimited plan.
The problem:
15GB mobile hotspot data aint enough to run my PC. A few Windows updates and one online game update a month about 1-6GB each( I have no clue why game makers have to push huge updates every month, like Guild Wars 2 for example or Eve Online, or simply starting Steam ) tears my mobile data plan apart, and where I live the satellite or dial-up are only means of getting internet, which aren't acceptable. due to lag and download threshold.
The workaround I tried:
Currently I have my laptop connected to TV via HDMA and by sharing my mobile hotspot able to stream YouTube and surf internet, but once 15GB hotspot data is exhausted, speeds drop down to crawling 0.80kbs instead of 4G as a punishment for going over.
So I got the Chromecast device, which is inserted into TV's HDMA port and supposed to connect with smartphone via wifi, but it appeared to me that I am required to establish a connection with another phone or device that is sharing mobile hotspot data or some kind of wifi internet and then Chromecast device can tap into it, which beats the purpose. Why can't my smartphone stream its display content directly to Chrome cast to be displayed on TV/monitor ?
The question:
Is there a microusb to HDMA converter that does not require MHL enabled device (almost all Galaxy Note models have it except Note 5 for some aggravating reason ) ?
Is there another way to connect a big screen to a smartphone to watch videos without burning precious mobile hotspot data?
Why can't I plugin microusb to USB cable from my phone into PC and use it as a mobile network card/router?
Is there a chance for an app that could resolve my issue or am I stuck burning mobile data with my hands behind my back just because mobile internet providers love to sell air?
Thanks in advance and apologize for any negativity, I really feel defeated by getting Note 5 instead of Note 3 which is MHL enabled, but isn't and option for a trade-in...

Moonlight game streaming stutters on WiFi

Anyone tried Moonlight game streaming (aka NVIDIA GameStream) on their U11?
Long story short, the U11 seems to have issues streaming over WiFi where other lesser Android phones do not.
1) No matter what the bitrate, I get constant stuttering and the audio is very choppy on the U11.
2) My AC1900 network pushes well over 200Mbps with 3ms latency on speed tests on the phone.
2) It DOES work perfectly with a USB ethernet adapter. I can set set Moonlight to 1080p 60fps @ 40Mbps and it streams fine - no audio issues, no frame drops.
3) My Surface 4 (Moonlight Chrome plugin) and Nexus 5X (!) (same Moonlight Android app), can stream nearly perfectly at at least 20Mbps on the same network.
4) Even a crappy Moto E streams pretty smoothly @ 10Mbps on 2.4Ghz!.
So to me this clearly seems like a WiFi latency issue specifically with the U11....
I've tried:
1) Both 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz bands, same result.
2) 2 different AC1900 routers, same result.
3) Enabled "High performance mode" in developer options, same result.
What I'm wondering is, what happened to the "WiFi optimization" setting on the phone - did that get removed in the Oreo update?
Has anyone encountered something similar - wondering if maybe someone on a non-stock ROM/kernel has any different experiences?
I'm mostly just pissed that it works perfectly fine on other Android phones, but not the U11.
EDIT: Factory reset the phone and it resolved the issue.
Try an app called boost+ by htc. You might ha e too many programs battling for ram.
Try checking your Internet settings. Most carriers won't let you change this but a speed testing app might help find the bottleneck.
Try an app called adguard. Lots and lots of adservers run in the background without you knowing. Even when offline they still keep pinging and retrying until they get a connection. Adguard will blackhole them.
High performance mode shouldn't be necessary as when off battery saver it runs at full tilt anyway. When you play on data plan deactivate wifi completely. That will stop the phone constantly pinging wifi.
