I've tried various different ROM images (including the excellent Dr.Gonzo), and I have this problem with all of them.
When I'm using the phone either with the keyboard in or out, the screen just switches off randomly. If I wait a few seconds (possibly the backlight timer length), then it comes back. Mostly... Othertimes I have to wait a lot longer, but it does always come back.
A reboot sometimes fixes it, but not always - does anything survive a reboot or battery removal?
Anybody else seen anything like this? I have seen a lot of threads about the screen staying on, but not off.
Of course, it could be a hardware fault, but because it's intermittent, it's hard to prove.
Mike
same problem
If you shake the phone can you re-produce this problem? I've never not heard of this being affected by software - you might also want to ensure you're not overclocking it.
Nothing is removed when you do a battery removal or reboot, ensure your connections are all tight and make sure the SIM pins are all making contact and the SIM door closes, apart from that it sounds like a possible bad LCD ribbon.
Shaking it doesn't reproduce the problem.
Once the phone has started doing this, it happens everytime you press a key.
Seems more like a memory leak to me since it always seems to happen after a while of web browsing/email use.
So actually, it looks like it might be a hardware fault.
I think it happens when the device gets warm. After a few minutes with the screen on, keyboard lit up, wifi on, the phone gets pretty warm and that's when the screen seems to go black. Leave to cool and all returns to normal.
Mike
Same issue here, but the screen does not acually go black/blank it just seems that the screen backlight does not turn back on from a standby like state, the phone itself functions but just not able to see whats going on on the screen.
(keyboard lights work fine and come on when expected)
Not sure about the heat theory as it happens (to me) most often right after a call, anything over 30-50 seconds and the backlight problem occurs, when it decides to work again is a matter of luck.
As said before because it's intermittent, it's very hard to prove.
Has anyone who has had this issue, fixed it with a hard reset ?
Very strange ... but also getting very annoying now!
i got the same thing. took it back to warranty and they said nothing's wrong with the phone but i still get this.
I experience the same problems.. it happens pretty random, but every time when you hit a key. I have set all timers to never but the problem is still there.
Running Gonzo 1.1 at the moment, upgraded from guava.. but that didn't solve the problem.
It is getting so annoying now that I am about to throw the s710 in the dustbin
I have had the same problem!
I have turn it back to my provider and no problem now.
i have the same problem with my VOX
apparently, i can still receive phone calls, and do whatever i want with the phone,
but the screen just stays black, its like if you have unplugged your monitor
since i dont have a htc center in my town or anywhere else nearby.
does anyone know a way on how to open the phone, change what need to be changed and correct the problem? im all up for testing if that would resolve this annoying problem :s
cheers everyone
there is a dismantling manual somewhere in this forum. search.
i don't think taking it apart would help you because this is not a physical fault that you can locate.
and i learned that mcel is the retail seller of vox in mozambique. they should be able to help you with service. else just send a mail to htc support and they will guide you.
yes, mcel are the retail sellers, but i tried to go there, and there are no specialists on htc's there,
the thing is, i didnt bought my htc from them, so i can't go there and change for another one
but tks anyway
no problem
but do try to contact htc support by email. they might suggest a way.
I'm having exactly the same weird problem and I think I found some pattern when it occurs. Well, the thing is that in the bright day or in a room with lots of light it works just fine. In the darker conditions… well… not so fine. It seems to me that this screen blackout happens whenever the keyboard light is on and screen changes to full brightness (in the dark, because of the light sensor). In the daylight, keyboard light doesn't turn itself on, so s710 works. I don't know much but this definitely isn't some bad contact problem. Maybe some battery problem, but I doubt it since I can receive phone call in this condition. This started to happen after I flashed this Windows Mobile 6.1 ROM from HTC (I have original S710). Flashing Dr.Gonzo's later on didn't bring any luck either. I believe that some power control SW is the main culprit. I've read that many people mention some Tornado Power Control app. Does anybody know can this application be permanently disabled or removed?
are you trying to say that by desabling the light sensor, the problem might go away?
i would also like to know if it possible to have the baklight on the lowest possible brightness forever, because it seems, on a low brightness the problem might go away

I also have this problem with the lightsensor turned off. And also at (as it seems) random moments.
well, even with the light sensor turned off, the problem persisted.
i got my phone to a repair shop of htc's, and they figured out the problem
my phone is now 100% thankfully, the repair man told that the problem was because of bad or malfunctioned circuits, he exchanged them with new ones, and the problem went away,
dont know wich circuits exactly, and he didnt want to tell me, but i suggest anyone having the same problem to try and do the same
probably its a hardware malfunction with these VOX,
its possible since so many times before i've heard about malfunctioned pieces coming out in large quantities for sale.
anyways, cheers everyone, and good luck Portugal in EURO!
I have the same problem. I just noticed that it usually happens when the phone is warm, so if you need to do something on my phone just... take some ice from fridge and put it on back of your mobile. I cant see any more solutions.
Please someone help us!
Update. Problem Solved
Just thought I'd update this thread I started.
I sent the phone back to my dealer (Grapevine in Poole,UK).
A week later, I got a brand new one back from the HTC repair centre.
So far, so good. Looks like the problem's solved.
Mike
Sam problem here,
i called with HTC and they sent them to there repair centre.
Hello all,
I hope you are well. I was recently watching the news when a news item came up on phones being bugged, especially those that are sold on places like Ebay.
I bought my HTC Touch Pro phone from Ebay and noticed that it lights up at midnight every day, without fail. I am never even close to the phone when this happens.
This lighting up phenomenon was one of the warning signs that was mentioned that suggests phones are being bugged. Would anyone be able to tell me how to know for sure it is free of bugs? Or do other users experience this also?
Thanks in advance!!!
I believe that is normal. I have a few devices myself and notice it.
you are talking about the ring of light that luminates down my the home and call buttons right?
I hadn't heard anything about "Bugs" and thought you were being paranoid.
maybe I will have to investigate.

Hello! Thanks for replying! I was waiting for someone to post!
Well, allow me to explain more:
Usually when an HTC Touch Pro is not being used, all lights are off. When one uses the phone, they have to press the power button at the top left corner, just beyond the edge. This causes the entire screen to light up, but not the buttons to light up.
My phone has this occurring at midnight, although nobody is touching the phone. This has me a bit worried! I've had less advanced phones in the past and I've never had this happen with any of them before. Does this 'phenomenon' happen to anyone else?

It's your notifications being set for next day i imagine you have S2U2 installed "it's all normal"
On my evo shift why would the sensor to the left of the speaker grill stop flashing for notifications such as sms/mms, missed calls etc. Now that it has stopped, the led under the speaker grill on the right, which was just the charging led, flashes for my notifications. Because of this, I no longer have two led notification lights so if my phone is charging i now have to turn on my screen to check notifications.
Ive tried calling Sprint three times. I was told to take the phone to sprint and have them check it out and install a previous software version. I went to sprint told them about my problem an how the tech made a note on my account. they said they did not do that there and said id have to go to the other sprint store down the street. When i got there, they seemed clueless about loading software or anything for that matter manually. Ive tried factory resetting and everything else I can think off. I bought 2 evo shifts with a new contract that had 2.3.3os out of box and a few days later checked for updates. Im not sure what the software number was before but after i updated it was 2.76.651.5(now.6) the same problem is happening with the second shift also.
Is this like unheard of to everyone? Ive looked every where about this problem and im not seeing anything at all about anyones proximity sensor ever even flashing for notifications.
What looks like a led on the left of the speaker grill is actually the proximity sensor, when you put the phone to your ear it turns the screen off so you don't open an app or hang up on the person you are talking to accidentally. The notification led is the one located to the right of the speaker grill.
Without them(developers) this place would not be called *Insert You Device Forum Name Here* but something else, e.g Mobile Phone & Tablet User Support Services For Ungrateful Nerds.

Yeah the sensor has never flashed for me,my girl and my homie, all we have had is the orange charge light/green notification light to the right of the speaker grill.....
Shifted to the extreme, cause I rawk Supreme

I know what it is and does, but what I am saying is that on both the evo shifts I bought, the proximity sensor acted as an actual led notification light. it flashed a bright green for every notification while the actual led notification light was only lighting/flashing orange and turning solid green to be charged, charging and finally when its fully charged. the proximity sensor would flash even when plugged in while the real led was being used for the charging light. I swear im not lying about any of this lol.
Well unless HTC has changed the sensor in newer makes thats not the way mine and others phones works so Guess you had a different phone. Try taking it to sprint repair and see what bthey tellyou . Good Luck

Lmao They looked at me like I was nuts.
I bought the two phones in late October. They both came with 2.3 out of the box. The proximity sensor acted as a second notification light for about a week after I decided to go into settings and check for updates and applied them which caused this to stop. Ive tried everything I could think of to get it to do it again but I cant find anything.
Im hoping someone here could help me look more into this and try to make it possible again.
EDIT
Hopefully since the sensor CAN and at one time did emit a green flash for notifications, can someone out there please figure out how to make it happen again. I don't really know anything about developing so I sadly can't do it myself...

grr, Okay, I know Im a newly registered user here and I havnt posted enough for you or the other members here to get to know me but Im being 100% honest about this guys. If this means anything, I swear on my daughters life and my mothers gave who has passed away that when I started my contract with 2 lines an 2 brand new evo shifts with 2.3 out of box that this really happened. The sensor flashed for notifications until about a week later when I performed the firmware, profile, prl and software update. It didnt even act like the prox. sensor should during calls until after the updates. And this was weeks before i even rooted the phones, they were completely stock.

You must have gotten a very very special shift and seeing as none of us have ever had a special shift like you i doubt we would even know where to begin on helping you fix your problem . You now have a normal shift thats not special anymore which is a shame... Not trying to be mean or sarcastic by any means

Dude i believe you, but seeing as none of our shifts have ever done that i don't think we would know where to begin on helping you. Take what i said however you want but i really wasn't trying to be mean or sarcastic cause i'm not the type of person to do that seeing as i don't know as much as everyone else on here about android
So I took my phone out when I got home, and suddenly the touch screen wont work at all. I can still get notifications and phone calls, but cannot answer or anything because the touch screen just will not respond at all. I haven't dropped it since I used it last or anything. It just like... isn't working?
I think this might have happened for a little bit a while back, but it fixed itself really quickly... But this time its just not responsive. I've tried letting the battery die and charging it, and the soft reset of the phone many times to no avail.
My G flex 2 is on AT&T if it matters
Any ideas?

It looks that it's really not software problem, but hardware malfunction, so you should take your phone for repair.
Try a factory reset of no avail then prob a hardware issue are there any major scratches on the screen and be honest lol some scratches can interfere with the xigitizer
yeah no scratches on the screen or anything. Only thing I can think of is it fell out of my pocket as I got out of the car into a bit of snow and got a bit wet, It was in a case and thers no physical damage. It also worked after being wet and stuff. All I can think of is that some got under the screen or something later. It didnt stop working until about three hours after that.
also, a hard reset did not fix my problem. I really have no idea what caused this or how to fix it. I have insurance on the phone, so Ill just have to send it it.
Sorry if anyone else has this problem! I have found no solution
When I try to pull down the notification bar on the right the screen goes black. Also turns off the always on display. I'm assuming it's something with the Proximity sensor. Tired of all the little bugs and problems with this phone. I’m returning it. Just curious if anybody else is having this problem.

I've had that happen on my Pixel 2 XL. Only once or twice and restart fixed it every time.
It's definitely the prox sensor. Always On Display shuts off when the phone is in your pocket or face down, which is detected by the proximity sensor, so that's totally normal. As far as it happening on the home screen, it seems like the phone thinks you're in a call, which would use the proximity sensor to turn the screen off near your head. I would reboot as @jimv1983 suggested and see if that works.
Are you using a screen protector? Sometimes those can cause issues with the proximity sensor, but usually it just causes the screen to shut off and not come back on during a call as it senses the protector at all times instead of your face.

I had a case with a built-in screen protector on it and I thought that might be what was causing it but after taking it off it still did it. Weird thing though once I put it on the wireless charger it stop doing it. Hasn’t done it all day even with case on. Weird. Still thinking about taking it back to Best Buy and swapping it out.
I've had a similar issue where the proximity sensor will not deactivate as long as a call is going (can't hangup, can't unlock, can't speaker phone, can't mute, etc.). I have to wait for the other person to hang up. Get an automated robo-call you accidentally answered....oh well, guess you have to listen to them. I have never been so angry at a phone as I am with this one. Especially as expensive as it is. I absolutely would NOT have bought this phone if I knew ahead of time how aggravating this would be! Thinking of sending it back. BUYERS BEWARE!

Had this very issue with my pixel XL and blowing on the top speaker grille of dust with compressed air solved it.
But if this is out of the box that sucks. It should not be like that. My pixel was approaching two years when that happened.
