Are you tired of the round edges? - OnePlus 7 Pro Questions & Answers

Hi all.
Sorry my first post on reddit so hoping it is correct
Im thinking about buying the Oneplus 7T pro Mclarn. But I have read some posts about the round edges on the screen.
Are you tired of it?
Thanks!
Regards Daniel

Nope

No. They don't bother me even after ~3 months of use. Wouldn't mind them even when the time comes for a replacement. But I'd prefer a flat normal display if it was offered.

No.

No.

I was very annoyed by the rounded edges on the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge but I barely notice the edges on the OnePlus 7 Pro.
I thought they were going to annoy me initially but to be honest, I don't even notice them anymore.

Nope

Haven't even noticed after a few months...

I consider myself round edges hater. It's just stupit. I wish the screen was normal.
That being said, the display is just too good... I'm unable to get annoyed by the round edges when everything else is just so good.
My main problem with the edges is the issues finding a working screen protector. Whitestone dome was tend to break on Pixel 2 XL even if i treated the phone very carefully.
I was sure OP7's rounded edges will cause problems, but luckily enough, Whitestone dome glass on this phone holds fantastic. No flaws whatsoever!

YES ! It's horrible! And the phone has round corners too ! That it's ugly too.

Yes and I find it pointless. Just as pointless as curved screens.

Yeah I'd be happy to see this trend go away and return to 16:9 display where all content scales correctly.

I'm Happy with edge to edge screen. NO to curved screen. Also a smaller phone/screen. Trend it's going to 7" screen. That's to much! Phone do not fit in any pocket.
A LED, like a thin line, on one side or both sides to signal notification, ..
Maybe to implement the new model of battery which it will be smaller and light weight.

I hate the rounded corner and edges. I'm going to get the 7T when they get TWRP working for it.

I love it, it gives a much smoother feeling. I reached the point , that I'm even looking for rounded corners in the apps, but unfortunately there's no always choice. Firefox, dialer, contacts.., etc look so "not matching" with the phone, with the sharp corners. I wish I could be able to make my own apps and rom too
I also thought at the first time, that it's not nice, like an old tv, that had this rounded corners and I was afraid that it gives that oldschool feeling, but I was wrong, saying after few months.

Didn't take long before I ordered a rear case. Found it uncomfortable without.

I think it makes large phones feel smaller and elegant
So no, I like it

I'm good with it, good thing as I'll hang on to it for a while

Personally not a fan of the rounded edges, but I'm fine with it relative to damned notches. I refuse to buy any phone with a notch and am glad to see that trend generally leaving.
Sad to see hole punches sticking around and made the choice to get the 7T Pro much easier (than waiting for the hole smacked 8).

Yes, I'm not a fan at all, it interferes with the way I like to hold the phone. I got used to them and now only sporadically I have issues with accidental touches etc., but I would prefer them to go away.
Definitely no longer a dealbreaker, because I love the phone otherwise, but annoyance nonetheless.

Yea and it covers the front. With the concerns of softer materials may be a good choice when in transport.

I also don't usually buy flip cases like that but I think it would be perfect for the Note 7 since it's such a massive smartphone.

My note 4 is bigger, but im digging this case.
I would try it.
After reading horror stories about these types of cases when I had my note 3, I stay away from these style of cases. By horror stories I mean people saying dirt and sand would get in there and scratch the screen when you closed the cover.

If y'all like this Case, you should at least check this one out:

I'm using it, and it's great. There's only a couple colors, but I'm really loving it so far.
oh, and it's much less expensive.
I got this case a few days before launch and Used it yesterday and the day I got the phone. Nice case, stylish. Kind of worried about it scratching tho because it is shiny plastic. Also I definitely recommend a screen protector with any such case

Best part about the removable battery is that the flip covers didn't add a lot of bulk since they would be part of the battery cover.
I love the clear view flip cover case, and it rarely gets any fingerprints on it. Shows all the notifications on the cover. Samsung redesigned it from last year's model, and it can no longer scratch your phone due to a new raised lip on the inside. I have the blue cover on a blue phone, and it's really beautiful, the back of the phone almost looks like it doesn't even have a cover on it, yet it never gets any smudges on it.
I got the black version of this case. The time and other bits that were visible under the case had this "glow" around them ... ie. they made the clock and the rest look fuzzy. I didn't think I could deal with it so I returned it
Also, the always on display of the Note 7 doesn't work with it. I kinda like this feature of the Note 7.
I'm digging the case but it has its downsides. Not much functionality apart from viewing notifications (tapping it tells you to open the cover to view it) and snoozing and dismissing alarms. No AOD, although, i understand why, because the clock is in a static position. But what's bugging me the most is the background color. I can accept the rest but not this. You'd think it would be black but its not. Its grey instead and lights up the whole screen making the magnet and the strip that connects the flap to the rear very noticeable in indoor lighting and in the dark. In darkness you can even see the inner rubber lip because the screen is lit. Being an SAMOLED screen why couldn't they keep it pitch black and only light up the clock and notification pixels?? I came from a HTC 10 with ice view case and that was so flush and better looking than this and that phone has a LCD!
Still rocking the clear view but I really wish it would just have a black background that's all. You can't seem to notice it in video reviews or outdoors as much but once you see it yourself, you'll know what I'm talking about.

The blue version does not show the magnetic strip or the side flap at all when it is lit.
Only one disappointment on this case. No AoD. Maybe Samsung can modify the software to provide AoD also with the case closed.

Really? No silhouette of them? Wonder why it's happening with my black one then. I've read about it happening on the s6 edge sections too and that was with a blue case if not mistaken. I've ordered a UAG Magma anyways. I want the AOD and off screen memo.

I purchased the gold color case and I don't have the problem you have. The background of the screen is black. Not grey. And I like the case as it felt solid. I like the edge of the case with silicone around it. And i bought OEM screen protector to protect the screen, because my Note 4 S view cover scratches my screen last time. The Screen protector works very well too, not peeling up at the side.

Damn that ain't cool (for me) lol. I like the case too apart from the background color, makes it look a little cheap to be honest and I'm using the samsung screen protector as well. I've tried all the possible display options to see if it was one of them causing it. Reset the phone too, took it out and back into the case and same thing. I'll see if I can get some pictures up to show.
Edit: You can see in this picture I googled how it looks to me. Notice the silhouette of the flap and the magnet. You can also tell the whole screen is lit coz its plenty bright and if I lift the cover just a little bit to peek under I can see the background is grey

Physical Drop & Scratch Resistance Report

Hi everyone,
The Essential company claims that the phone is very drop and scratch resistant thanks to the premium materials used in the phone, but sadly there are no official Essential drop tests available anywhere which is mainly due to all the problems Essential seems to be having with supplies and rolling out their first manufactured devices. There are also some reports surfacing from the very early adopters of the phone of some scuffs and scratches which never go beyond a mere mention.
I thought I would start this thread where people who have the phone can report about how the phone handles inadvertent drops and scratches and scuffs to the screen and the ceramic back. When posting, please also include a little bit of explanation as to how it happened and if possible a picture of the supposed damages to the phone.
Cheers.
dropped mine twice. 2 nicks in screen, but ceramic and titanium are fine.

I watched the video. Mous of 7 or better on the ceramic. The finish in the titanium can be damaged but noting like aluminum.
Forget about bending the phone. The phone is pretty tough. A case will protect th cosmetics.

Seems like this will be a very durable device.
Ya for what its worth it is way way way better than any aluminum phone would do. This they got right but its the software and camera that hold it back

My only complaint is the camera software.
Other than that, I don't have any issues.
I would like a case, but only for cosmetics.
Know what really does it for me? Stock Android is a bit too stock also. I have gotten really used to how the pixel works and really like it with all it's slight tweaks to stock.
The cameras sensors are still too small to be on the level of the the other flagships too. Not only software. The Google camera does pretty well though

I use Nova, so Android is never really stock for me.
I use Nova Launcher because I can restore my device layout on any device.
As far as the camera, I'm not that concerned about the quality.
For me it's a case of not having a better camera and just getting the picture is important.
If I really wanted a good photo, I'd use one of my"real" cameras.

I've dropped this phone in 1 week more than I've dropped my Pixel XL in the past 3 months, just because of how slippery the little bugger is. No damage as a result of dropping it, though.
I do have some very light scratches on the ceramic back, from sliding across my desk or countertop at home, which I was *not* expecting. Both the top, by the mod indentation holes, and at the bottom left, too. I know they aren't from dropping it, as every time it's fallen, it's landed on its side or a corner, never flat on its back.

It is definitely not the phone for everyone. Build quality is for everyone.
There are some software shortcomings. I think they can sort those out.
I sold my 6P. SO I have the Essential for the long haul.
I have my replacement phone arriving today. I have gone through 2 glass screen protectors that due to the fit of them (not sticking to the edges) I have a nick in the glass at the top left and the screen is completely shattered on the bottom left, I can see gold metal under it and it has a crack running diagonally from left to right from the bottom left. I know I never dropped this phone from more than 2 feet high. I also have the scratches on the ceramic back near the mods ports. I've only used my 360 a couple of times. I'm definitely getting a case and moving to a plastic wet install screen protector.
I haven't dropped this phone yet, but I have several hairline scratches on the back ceramic. I guess I'm around a lot of minerals or dust particles that are > 8 hardness, which I find interesting.
Also on the glass I notice a patch of hairline scratches. I'm usually real careful about my phones (of course, everyone says this) but I think that's more of Corning's fault this time around. They're really small but knowing they're there bothers me. I wish I could buff them out. I'll be getting a screen protector I guess.

Oh wow, those are cool
My back panel got scratched (micro scratches) that's so weird. Got ceramic Xiaomi mi2 and it was perfectly strong....not like this one.
I dropped mine screen facing the floor from about 4 feet. Screen survived, minor scratches. Not a single crack. I didn't expect the screen to survive.
-Nav
I have a step from main floor to foyer. Placed my phone near the edge and my dog pushed it down to tiles. Face down smashed!
2 line of scratches at the bottom bezel.
small dings on top left and bottom left corner display.
Sigh... thought it would survive...

Does the 1+6 have sharp corners?

So... Noticed the other day that each corner both on the bottom and top is really sharp. If I drag my fingers over it feels really rough. But on the middle top, sides and bottom its flat and smooth.
So the plastic frame between the metal and glass are uneven on the corners I thought.
So I sendt it in to repair since I thought this couldn't be right just to get the feedback it is normal...
So my question to other owners out there.
Are your corners sharp as well?
Could this be the screen protector that the phone comes with. Its applied very effectively so that you might not notice it.

Forgot to mention that. No. It's taken off ?
Every Google search I found said that
Mine has no sharps. But sharpness is in the eye of the beholder. Put a protective bumper case on it ! I found this to be a "must" because ( for me ) the stupid thing was always slipping out of my pocket.

I get that. I also got a case for it. But I am afraid dirt and debree gets in the easier because of it.
It could be a problem if your job exposes you and your phone to grit... I would still say 'install a protector' but then be on a regular schedule to pop it off and rinse it off. They pop off pretty easy, right ?

Nah. Actually prepared this phone with a nilkin back case and a full Adhesive screen protector. Plan to have this a long time. But it's a shame if mye phone is... "inferior" to everyone else's device
I know what you're talking about OP, and I noticed it the first day I had my op6.
Sharp probably isn't the word you're looking for to accurately describe the issue which is why most people are saying no. But there is a very rough transition between the frame and the glass. It is normal on the two op6 I have used

Appreciated for the confirm. It's a shame though
Each corner the plastic rim is slightly raised above the glass so that it might prevent direct impact to the fornt glass in case it falls.
I also noticed it the first day that I bought it and maybe it's just me but I feel the "sharpness" in every point of the border.
It was annoying to use the phone because the way I usually hold it my finger lays on the border and it hurt a bit, luckily with a case you don't feel it anymore.
Maybe reading these post about the problem made me think too much about it, because I just checked and it seems even a bit worse so now I don't know if I should contact OP or not
I've had my phone in the carbon case since day one, took the case off to clean it the other night and felt the "sharp" edges and wondered if I had either bent the frame or if the case had compressed the glass. I'm glad I'm not the only one to notice this, as I didn't notice it in the few minutes of having my phone naked at launch.

RhinoShield 9H Tempered Glass Screen Protector

I haven't seen much on this screen protector and had to add my experiences. In my opinion this is finally the "perfect" screen protector for the note 9. Its a little expensive but totally worth it. I have two Note 9's and I have installed one on each phone. I ended up getting one that had a small imperfection causing the one side to lift overnight but after a few emails and pics to RhinoShield they send me a new one for free. They did have two different ones listed on their website but right now I only see the one thats full adhesive. The install is a little different than most but not hard and the alignment tray they supply works great. I would watch the install video so you can get a perfect install. The only cons I noticed is some dust can collect on the sides but not as bad as the dome glass. It also has black borders and the sides seem to get cut off a tiny bit. This isn't a deal beaker because the edge panel still works perfect. This is not an edge to edge but I prefer that also so it works with any case. I have tested it with the RhinoShield SolidSuit and Crashguard as well as two Spigen cases and it fits perfect. The SPen feels great and touch sensitivity is also very good (I did turn on the increased touch option). After trying a TON of screen protectors this in the end all for me. I was very surprised to not see any real reviews on this one.
This looks nice.
Is it full adhesive and does it go on easy or are there a lot of bubbles that are hard to get out?
Just had a complete nightmare with the ZAGG Elite and don't want to go through that again.
Can you get it on Amazon or only from Rhinoshield?
It is full adhesive. That is what makes it so good. No rubber feeling from a wet install no messy LOCA glue and no stupid edge glue that pops off if you look at it wrong. This was my install method I was able to do two like this with ZERO bubbles. Im kinda OCD with screen protectors.
1. Clean (DUH)
2. Place alignment tray on, clean again and use dust stickers that are included.
3. Peel off protector back film and place the screen protector on the phone but dont press it down.
4. Once its aligned in the tray perfect I used my knuckle and ran it down the center of the phone.
5. Slowly run your finger/knuckle from the center towards the edge but going up and down the phone evenly. These stick with more of a "tacky" glue unlike the "static cling" from most full adhesive glass protectors. If you get a bubble make sure to work it out as you go even lifting it up to make sure they are out. Once its stuck down I dont see them every working out. You will see what I mean when you do it.
6. When you get to the curved edge it will stop sticking and leave almost when looks like a bubble from the top to the bottom along the edge. I just started at the center of the edge and pressed the screen down SLOWLY all the way to the top and then the same from the center to the bottom. Do that on both sides and sit back and enjoy your work.
Im convinced there is not a better protector out there including Dome Glass. I even bought an extra for backup if anything happens to them.

And I looked on Amazon but dont see it. They have the one that's just the edge glue. But don't bother with that one.
Going to order on and test it out with some optical adheasive. So the glue they use is it like the gel that Zagg uses on the elite? I like the full cover of this one.
Never tried the zagg one. I thought I read reviews on that one and they wernt that good. You really won't need to add anything to this one. Just don't leave any bubbles as you Install it thinking you will get them out after it's all the way on.
I'm going to order one also. Sounds kind of like the Elite but I'm praying it's not.
Nah Zagg elite's work great. Just idiots don't know how to install them. My beef is Zagg makes a great product...then goes out of there way to gimp it. The black bezzles are absolutely horrible. Cuts down on your screen size and even installed perfect you get a little light leakage.
Ya I hear you on that. This one has the black borders that suck but as long as I can still use the edge panel and I dont see bubbles I'll take it any day.

I've installed many of full adhesive protectors over the years and I'm no idiot. Never have I seen a glass protector that cracks as easy as the ZAGG Elite.
I will try the Rhinoshield and see if it's any better than the Elite. I like that the sensors are covered with the Rhinoshield. Just ordered one up.
Is the alignment tool a plastic border that goes around the phone like Zagg uses?
---------- Post added at 10:24 PM ---------- Previous post was at 09:48 PM ----------
Just ordered 2 so I'll have a spare in case I screw up the first one.
Ya it's just a plastic frame that you put on from the top and it has little tabs to center it. It's simple but works good.
I'm pretty easy on my phones and don't ever really drop them but the glass on this one seems pretty good. We will see how it holds up on the woman's phone she is a little rougher with hers. I'm glad you ordered one so I can see what someone else thinks about it.

I would be interested in this also... If these idiots would stop making these worthless curved screens it would be all good. Just got my wife a Moto Z3 and it's a nice phone thinking of getting one also to have a flat screen again.

I agree and absolutely hate these curved screens. The one thing I liked about the iPhone XS Max was the nice flat screen, full adhesive protectors went on like a dream.

My wife, my daughter and all their friends.
Ya half my friends too. I wont let my kids use them unless they want to buy the with their own money.
Oh come on!
I bought the RhinoShield tempered glass protector a few month ago and came with no frame to put it on the phone, and was only border adhesive with only top and bottom black borders.
But on the side on randomly on the center of the screen, the same ugly rainbow effects we usually got (and dot matrix too).
The bottom left corner had issues since it wasn't responsive anymore either (probably due to the inability to put it correctly because no frame to help even if all seem to be symmetric).
Not satisfied.

I believe Rhinoshield had both an edge sticker like you received and the full adhesive version. I ordered the full adhesive ones.

I just see they provide now two versions. On their install video, they provide an installation frame for it too.
I won't try the experience I think, especially when it said that it's not edge to edge

You can try GadgetShieldz their screen doesn’t have any Rainbow or halo effect(If applied correctly) and they make the minor scratches disappears.

I'm not fan of plastic protector. Not smooth enough for use with swiping, plus it really attract dust.
Ya they did have two versions. I never bothered with the edge only glue because they all seem to suck. I'm telling you the full adhesive one is by far the best one I have tried so far. It's not perfect but its as good as we will get because of the curved edges.

Question Screen Protector

Can anyone recommend a third party screen protector that actually works ?
Samsung says you shouldn't remove the OEM screen protector... but is it okay to do so?
If you ask me... I would recommend not to remove the OEM screen protector at the same time don't use any 3rd party screen protector too...

Why? Have you removed it? Any experience with other screen protectors?
I use the Skinomi screen protector on mine, been using them since my Pixel 2 XL. The Samsung one is a flimsy piece of hard plastic that loves finger prints. So glad I took the "risk"
You can find a number of videos where people apply their own. Definitely recommend, but it is scary while you're doing it
My tip after applying it: Keep the phone unfolded overnight!

Hi!
How long have you had the Skinomi protector on? Any problems? Does it feel as smooth as the stock protector? Does it cover the whole screen? Stock protector has small gaps all around the screen.
Some questions...

It feels so much better. I've had it on for about 3 months now. Keep in mind I never liked glass screen protectors. The 'rubbery' ones that require water feels better, and makes sense for a phone where you're not likely to drop it on the screen
No problems, just remember not to fold the phone for at least the day afterwards (I have a very small bubble there due to my impatience). Plus, the rubbery ones self heal so it always looks great. The fact that it never shows fingerprints too. No more constantly wiping the phone after every use
Yes I know exactly the issue with crap getting along the sides. So infuriating, but this one reaches the corners well. I also put the protector touching the very top of the phone as well to eliminate the top gaps so the only real gap is the very bottom, and that isn't touched as often as every other part of the phone. I also don't remember the last time I needed to clean it
In the picture, ignore the bottom gap gunk. It looks way worse on camera for some reason
Let me know if you want any more pictures/angles

When installing the Skinomi, what's the best way to deal with the hinge dip when "squeegeeing" the protector to the screen?
Just ordered the Skinomi.
I almost got T-Mobile to exchange the whole phone. They finally asked me when I bought it and determined it was still under Samsung warranty and directed me to Samsung.
Once again, Samsung sent me on a wild goose chase to Best Buy and the Samsung Experience section which, no longer exists at the 2 Best Buy's I tried.
Dismal support from Samsung!

Nice, that's the one I'm using
I think I first tried squeezing from middle outwards, but the phone did fine doing it normally (from top to bottom or vice versa). I was only worried about water getting into the hinges, but apparently these phones do well with water according to YouTube durability tests
I hear a lot of people with the same experience for the lack of Samsung support. It's a shame
Have you all read this yet:
Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 durability tested — read this before you buy
The Galaxy Z Flip 3 is more durable, but the foldable display itself is still fragile
www.tomsguide.com
After reading that and watching the YouTube to replace the screen protector, seems pretty scary to replace the screen protector.
The best screen protector secured at last!
After many months of scouring the internet and more money spent than I'd like to admit, I have finally found what I would consider a better screen protector than even the OEM installed one from Samsung. I have tried close to 10 different...
forum.xda-developers.com
I just made a thread about this and I'm absolutely positive I found the best screen protector by a longshot. It's also a very straightforward install, I got a perfect install my first try.
