Time to wait to see if we can unlock this bad boy unofficially. The wait begins.

Ya T-Mobile also

Again, unless I'm completely off, it makes perfect sense that that switch is disabled. Until you fully pay for the device, I wouldn't allow it either. It may still not work, but that certainly explains why it doesn't, now. Carrier lock = sim lock. Unlock the sim, you unlock the carrier. No carrier lock, voila.

This for Bootloader unlocking, not carrier unlocking.

I remember my Nexus 6 on at&t had a unlocked bootloader

Zero is right, the OEM unlock switch will be grayed out on most carrier locked devices irregardless of whether the bootloader can be unlocked until the carried lock is removed.

It's ATT. Did you really expect it to be unlocked?
Pay it off. Get sim unlock. Get bootloader unlock.
I'll have mine paid off in less than a month. Then we will know.

I'm waiting at least a month before I pay it off then I'll do the same.

Just a thought, pull your sim, factory reset and see if it will let you unlock. Then put your sim back in. Also, there is options to root even when locked on the Verizon model, I would think it would work on ATT. FWIW.

I am sorry to be the bearer of bad news - BUT, ATT, TMOBILE and VERIZON all have LOCKED Bootloaders - they will not be unlocked when you pay it off. Period. Won't happen. Don't get your hopes up.
The Only hope (however slim) is for someone to figure out a way to do it with custom code - but frankly that has not been done on an ATT Phone in YEARS - I don't expect it will happen ever.
I wish this wasn't true, but you can take it the bank, the bootloader on those phones is locked tight and are going to stay that way for a long time.

Ok, but TMobile users have already had theirs unlocked, and Verizon as well. So you info is incorrect. I have insides at ATT. We will see soon enough, and if not oh well. I enjoy the phone how it is. It's great for me

Yes, bootloader. They contacted and got sim unlocked, and was able to bootloader unlock.
I'm 99% sure once you sim unlock, you'll be able to bootloader unlock on the ATT one. Because it says, not available on carrier locked devices. Once it's not carrier locked, you can unlock.

Yes even OnePlus devices sold by t mobile we're unlockable once a Sim unlock was granted, either by paying off or using a traveling excuse for Sim unlock

I don't think that will work since that lock is probably part of custom software from AT&T. As soon as you put the SIM back in it will either automatically download that software or tell you there is an update (that would be custom from AT&T). If it's the second case then you could not install the update but since every update after that would be the same situation you'd never be able to update.

Custom software? No. This is the stock Google image with 3 att apps installed once you boot with an ATT sim card.
And no it won't be like that. After unlocking the bootloader you can flash the Google image. And you'd never have ATT attached to the phone again.

So have we seen anyone who has SIM-unlocked their AT&T device and then successfully unlocked the bootloader?

[Completed] New LG G2 phone - this phone is permanently locked and cannot be unlocked

Well as my unfortunate luck has it, I wanted to upgrade my old Nexus 4 to a LG G2 D801 unit. I bought one new-refurbished off ebay and it just arrived recently.
I tried to put in my WIND mobile sim card and realized the phone is not detecting it. After looking into the issue for the majority of the day, it seems that the phone is hard/sim locked.
I went into the area where one would go to unlock the phone, only to be greeted by this unfortunate message.

Now first thing I did was start searching the interwebz....and I can't seem to find much on this.
I am not sure what I can do. The shipping back to China, well that's out of the question due to the high cost.
I can't use the phone as it's a T-Mobile device.
I can't unlock the phone because it's hard locked.
Is there anything I can do to get it working? Does anybody know how I could possibly reset the counter for this?
Thank you in advance.

Hi and thank you for using XDA Assist
Unfortunally the phone is locked and only the T-Mobile carrier can work on it .
It is locked from factory default state. So there is nothing you can do to unlock it (from what i know).

Hello, thanks for the reply. That's unfortunate for me I guess.
Now when you say, it's locked from the factory default state...If I drive down to the states and buy a T-Mobile LG G2 from the store, would that be also hardlocked?
I am trying to send this phone back to China and I know T-Mobile stores still have the LG G2 as certified pre-owned.

Yes if you buy another T-Mobile phone, you will stick on T-Mobile only and you will not have the ability to use other carrier other than T on that phone... But you will still be able to Root and make all those stuff but to change carrier will not be able to.

I am a bit confused. The phone I received, it seems like the SIM code unlock was entered 10 times wrong and thus is why the phone is hard locked to T-mobile now.
If I buy a phone from the T-Mobile store, it will be hardlocked also? I don't understand why it would be, since many people have those phones unlocked?

Unlocked but not "Unlocked" from carrier they still stick with that carrier.
If you are looking for example on the S6 forum you will see that there are separated forums for Verizon, T-Mobile etc... They are separated because the phone is not exactly the same as the international model as the carrier modified it, so a separated development needs to be done for that phone.....
You simply cannot uncarrier (from what i know) only if you took your phone to a professional guy who is super expert and can do it, but from what i know it's impossible to uncarrier a phone.... Better always to get an international one in order to avoid these problems

I think maybe I confused you or myself.
The T-Mobile LG G2 will work on the AWS frequency that I require here in Canada for WIND mobile.
If the phone is locked to T-mobile, I could use a service online, provide them the IMEI and the network the phone came from and then I would be given the unlock code to allow the phone to read a SIM card other then T-Mobile.
Example video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8m4ru062k_M
Notice when he puts in the prompt to get to the network settings, he can put in a PIN. When I tried that, I get the locked message.

Correct if you have the Verizon version. Not correct if you bought your phone from Google. That screen just means that your bootloader is currently locked. But it's trivial to unlock (and then root, if desired), as long as you don't have the Verizon version.

No. the idea of having a locked bootloader is so your phone is protected from the get-go. If you could unlock it and root it then the bootloader would be useless.
If you have been trying to unlock it and haven't been able to 1 of 2 (or possibly both issues) are present:
1. You have Verizon and they have updated the patch so Verizon users are not able to unlock unless a new exploit comes out.
2. You do not have fastboot and/or your phone drivers are not working, so fastboot is not properly working on your computer.
3. Both 1 & 2.

I'm not sure what that means with it being greyed out. I've seen others with that issue. Here in the United States that's not a problem, so it's likely something with the UK or carrier, or something else. I don't know any information beyond that.

In the United States most of the major networks would subsidize or pay for some type of incentive for users to use their networks. They have an interest in keeping the users on their network and prevent taking the device to another network esp after paying incentives for it. I have an old Nexus 6 that Sprint paid for that I got at a very low price that is network locked to Sprint despite it being a global compatible network device.

well no, people still pay for the device they just two it over 2 years rather than upfront. but anyway my point was more that people wanting to a buy a pixel probably want to becaues they dont want the networks to have enhanced / ruined it.

You are referring to either a payment plan or leasing which is different. In the past carriers used to offer 2 yr contracts which immediately subsidized the phone's entire cost. The Nexus 6 I was able to get brand new under $200 because of this. Verizon is packing in credit over 24 months, but this is still money that is being used as a subsidy.

At&t pixel 5 is carrier-locked

Is it financed, or did you buy it outright? Mine is financed, but I assumed (like an idiot, after all this is at&t) that I would be able to unlock it after paying it off. Please don't tell me I'm stuck.
Mine is financed, but I have 14 days to return it. I thought it was a deal at $450, but if I can't root it, I'll have to get an unlocked one.
I'm not from the US but I think people on the OP7Pro would call up and saying there are going on a business trip abroad so could they please have the device unlocked.
It was a bit of a lottery if they got someone chill who would do it. The other option is to pay it off.
That might have been another US network though.

This was the locked t-mo model, and that's how I got mine unlocked. I don't work at at&t anymore but when I did there would be no way to unlock it without it being paid off. However I was contracted to work with at&t and not directly employed by them, maybe someone would have permission to do so I'm just doubtful.

Carrier locked is not the same as bootloader locked. As long as you can toggle the unlock bootloader setting in the developer options menu, you can root. You just can't insert the SIM of another carrier until your device is paid off.
You cannot toggle the OEM unlocking switch on carrier locked devices

Apologies, no condescension intended. It looks like you've been rooting devices all the way back to the HTC M8. That may well have been one of the last devices that could be bootloader unlocked via exploit. I find it hard to believe that you have been active on XDA all this time and never read any posts regarding bootloader unlocking of Verizon branded/locked devices. The answer regarding bootloader unlock and root has been the same for many years now. Thus my statement that I'm amazed people are still not aware of this.
I didn't know that either. Guess all the phones I've purchased have been unlock devices.. My last phone was a samsung note 10 whick couldn't be unlocked.
if pixel 5 is anything like pixel 4 then the oem bootloader unlock option is tied to the sim lock status. for example my p4 was carrier lock to EE but i paid it off right away so i can sim unlock. becuz i read that once sim unlocked, the oem unlock toggle ungreys itself. this is exactly what happened and i was then able to unlock bootloader.
i read posts about at&t models when early researching the p4 and the way i remember it being explained was it is like apple unlocking system. the serial gets whitelisted for unlocking on google servers which then sim unlocks phone. but this also controls the oem unlock toggle! so basically sim lock status = oem unlock toggle ability status. but again this was for p4.

if pixel 5 is anything like pixel 4 then the oem bootloader unlock option is tied to the sim lock status. for example my p4 was carrier lock to EE but i paid it off right away so i can sim unlock. becuz i read that once sim unlocked, the oem unlock toggle ungreys itself. this is exactly what happened and i was then able to unlock bootloader.
i read posts about at&t models when early researching the p4 and the way i remember it being explained was it is like apple unlocking system. the serial gets whitelisted for unlocking on google servers which then sim unlocks phone. but this also controls the oem unlock toggle! so basically sim lock status = oem unlock toggle ability status. but again this was for p4.

Thanks for that. Unfortunately if you pay it off early, you have to pay full price (which is somehow more than buying it straight from google). The discounted price only applies if you submit to the 30 month lock in. I returned the phone. Guess I'm sticking with the trusty 2xl for a little longer.
The carrier unlock and SIM unlock are tied together for T-Mobile and AT&T, only Verizon has the "OEM unlock" permanently stuck to OFF and they will not unlock it. I think they need to be pressured but it will take work. They have no excuse.
But AT&T and T-Mobile will unlock the OEM toggle when they SIM unlock, it was confirmed with Pixel 4 when they started selling those carrier-locked. Just usually have to pay off unless you can convince them early.
FYI....T-Mobile only sells the 4a 5G, not the 5. Could change as 5 stock comes back. Short supply right now.

Question 6a from Google: Can't unlock bootloader

Hi all,
just received my 6a directly from Google and I seem to be unable to unlock the bootloader.
The option "OEM unlocking" is greyed out and it says "Connect to the internet or contact your carrier.".
I connected it to the internet via Wifi and updated all the apps.
What can I do?
Best,
Mustkeg

You just answered your own question. While you may have purchased the device from Google, is it a "carrier" branded device for Big Red, AT&T, T-mobile..etc?
If so, then you'll have to contact the carrier to see if they will let you unlock it once it's paid off. Best bet is to return it for an "unlocked" model. Best of luck to you.

That is exactly right. A warning to others, never buy a branded device even from Google.
I'm actually in the same boat here, purchased the Unlocked non-carrier branded Google Pixel 6a directly from the Google Store and "OEM Unlocking" is greyed out...contacted Google support about it and they had no idea why, transferred to a specialist and still no answers...they said they're going to look into it more and get back to me
I do not even have the choice to buy crappy "Verizon et al." locked variants in my country via the Google Store. I paid it in full up front and without any carrier bloat.
Just had a support chat with Google, they told me it's a bug and will be fixed in an update. Soon...ish.
hello from store google in france .this and write unlock

In some cases, the device just needs to be connected to the Internet for a while for OEM Unlocking to become available.
It is true that they can remedy this with a software update.
If OEM Unlocking is unavailable, this means that the ro.oem_unlock_supported property is set to 0.
If ro.oem_unlock_supported=1 then OEM Unlocking will be available in Developer Options. This toggles the get_unlock_ability property to 1, which informs the bootloader that unlocking is allowed.
I would request an RMA if this issue does not resolve itself. You paid for an unlocked device from Google; they should have sent you an unlocked device. When I ordered my Pixel 5, I unlocked it straight out of the box without even connecting to WiFi.

You're right. I definitely bought an unlocked device, but ADB getprop says [sys.oem_unlock_allowed]: [0].
I'll hold out for an eventual update for some days and if the end of the return window turns near, I'll return it.
Maybe other users will chime in soon and tell about their experiences with unlocking the 6a. There are not even factory images available at this point.

To be honest, this has been a mystery for more than a decade. I cut my teeth on the OG Motorola Droid, back when the most common recovery was ClockWorkMod, and CyanogenMod was still in its infancy. Still, we haven't quite figured out exactly what sets the ro.oem_unlock_supported property, especially in circumstances like the Pixel series, where unlocked devices from Google are seemingly identical to carrier branded devices, and even run the exact same firmware - yet the latter remains locked. It's entirely possible that this property is set in hardware, and that Google manufactures devices specifically for carriers who don't want the devices to be unlockable.
Do you have Fastboot? If so, look up how to unlock bootloader with fastboot.
You can bypass Bootloader restrictions in some cases. What OS version are you on? What Version of Linux Kernel? You can find these answers in the "About" section.

If you recall this happened once before. I'm not sure which Pixel it was, perhaps the 3 or 4 but Google must have reset their IMEI database and then asked users to do a factory reset. That fixed it but it did require a wipe so beware once they fix it. It has to be the IMEI that allows or disallows the OEM switch since no one can find any other reason and how can they just globally reset the switch other than that. But I defer to the experts on this one.

This is a known issue with Google devices ever since the Nexus - Google branded devices purchased without a carrier plan are usually bootloader unlockable, while carrier branded devices, whether purchased from Google or from the carrier, are not. There is no known vulnerability that allows circumventing the bootloader lock.

Interesting, I hadn't heard of that. I have heard of some TMobile users being able to request a bootloader unlock through their carrier once the device is paid off.
The problem with the IMEI database theory is that it could be safely assumed that every device would not be unlockable until it was able to connect to the Internet. Most of us with unbranded devices have been able to unlock them right out of the box without even setting up WiFi.
Just received mine, went into developer options (after connecting to wifi) and it's greyed out for me as well. no system update available so i went to check the factory images and there are only 2 for the 6a, one for japan and another for verizon. mine is a non-verizon model, but i plan to use it on their service, none for the generic device. i have not inserted my sim card yet.
I then tried updating all apps, play services, etc. and then restarted. still grayed out. factory reset, still grayed out.
very frustrating....dying to get rid of my 4a5g which overheats constantly....

The first factory images are dated 220601.
My 6a runs a "220123" build.
Let's hope the international 6a factory builds are also newer and include the fix.

I won't swear to it but my P6 was not unlockable until I connected to the internet via wifi or carrier. I"d be curious to see what others have experienced to either confirm or deny what I remember. But in the other instance a year or so ago it seemed to some of us that they had to update their IMEI database, factory reset and then it was registered to allow unlock. No one was entirely sure though but they fixed all of them with one back end update. What else could it have been? As you stated the devices and images are identical. That's why I don't think the August update will do anything at this point. They will have to do something similar, whatever that was, since there was no software update for those affected just a factory reset.

As a last ditch effort, I popped in my sim card (verizon) and it triggered an update to the June security patch (40mb update that took forever). I was hopeful that this would fix things, but it still greyed out.
new build # is SD2A.220601.004
Just received my "unlocked" Pixel 6a direct from Google and indeed the entry in Developer Options to unlock the bootloader is greyed out.
Just adding to the list that I also received an "unlocked," carrier agnostic, 6a from Google with the bootloader unlock grayed out.

Question I can't find any solution for my tmo pixel 7 pro

People have denied that this even is something that can be on this phone. I've search everywhere any advice, I reached out to my carrier, I've even just given it time. The checkin dialer code verifies on connected to Internet but still, my OEM unlock is grayed out and says connect to the Internet or contact your carrier. It's some bs. I've read this is what Verizon models will display and it's a lost cause but this was a brand new tmo pixel 7 pro and I triple checked the packaging it has the T-Mobile information inside the box and the seal states it tmo. I just wanna unlock my bootloader. I've ran out of ideas and looked everywhere, so I'm posting to get some advice please if you have anything lemme know.

And what did the carrier say?
Regardless of which carrier you have, you must fully pay off the device before you can have them normally allow for OEM unlocking if you did not purchase the "factory unlocked" version of the device. Of course, there are ways around that via contacting your carrier before fully paying off the device. But you mentioned that you had contacted them.
So, as @bobby janow said: what did the carrier say?
Contact tmo thru Twitter tech support until u get someone to unlock the BL.. Keep trying

But its a brand new phone. I have the op 10 pro still on contract rooted unlocked obv and twrp on it as of a few days ago. Just this phone is being weird

I just got my Pixel 7 PRO yestersday. In the same day I had it unlocked and a custom ROM put on it. Although I was honest and told them I needed it unlocked for development reasons. Plus I've had 3 phones through them that were sim unlocked before being paid off. I guess part of it might be a trust thing.
