Unlock Bootloader - ASUS ZenFone 6 (2019) Questions & Answers

Hi All,
Where exactly is the official unlock bootloader guide?
Pros/Cons?
May have more questions. This is my first new phone since my note 4 and unlocking the bootloader and rooting looks like it got a bit more complicated since then. Also, I noticed that for as phone that was sent to developers the forum is a bit thin on the development side when compared to phones like the one plus 7 pro. That is what it is and yeah please think of a better response then the obvious I should have bought that instead, then again maybe I should have. Of course ASUS didn't help the situation with the fact that they barely made the phone available. Idiots. With that time will tell and I am still exited! Hopefully this forum will become more robust in the upcoming months as the Zenphone 6 is the first phone I actually wanted to buy since my note 4. 3rd party development was a determinate factor besides the other obvious factors that anyone in this forum probably know and share.
Thank you again for any and all information!

T-Mobile sneaks "rootkit" into G2 phones - reinstalls locked-down OS after root
Not that there haven't been preventative measures before, but it looks like the G2 will be "unrootable" to start. Might be something to consider before jumping in with the G2. Very sad as this phone looks like a winner in all other ways.
Here is the original article on BoingBoing.
Hmmm... I'd be interested to know where the original OS ROM is stored, as that would take up a lot of space...
If it's true, then we next find how it "decides" it's rooted, and look at fooling that. If not, look at changing the image to be flashed with a custom ROM or dummy one.
Still failing that, perhaps looking into what calls this chip, and if boot process could be made to skip this.
Something seems strange about this, though I've not researched it properly yet... anyone seen it reported on other sources yet?

Thanks, that links back to XDA, so I had a quick read of the latest... I was considering buying the G2/whatever it's called, but I have now changed my mind.
Yes folks, I just made a purchasing decision based on some silly little security chip, and I encourage others to do likewise. I am sure the security will be broken on it, at which point (if it's a permanent root/custom flash) I would re-consider my position, but as it stands, I refuse to buy it.
I have no idea who decided this was needed, but I certainly will not be buying from them in future. If it's T-Mobile, I will switch network (despite the fact they're a good network in the UK), if HTC I will look to other manufacturers.

It's not that much different to what Motorola is doing with the Droid X, Droid 2 and Milestone, where if it detects any meddling it will brick the phone.
But in the long term, it's OUR phones, we can do whatever we please. Trust me it will be bypassed, if a lock can be made by a human, it can be BROKEN by a human. Look at the Desire for example.
They should do what they did with the N1, if the user unlocks the bootloader, and meddles with it until they bugger the phone, and they try sending it back for warranty, it's the users fault.

Explain to me how write protection == rootkit. In fact, it's quite the opposite - a rootkit (of sorts) allows us to exploit our way into a rootshell and install su to /system/bin/. This is nothing more than clever write-protection in the mmc.
And as usual, HTC is late on delivering the kernel source so we can really see what's up...

Why would HTC look to other carriers?
I ranted about this back in the WinMo days, but XDA is essentially picking up the slack for manufacturer/carrier actions. You said so yourself; you're not considering the G2 for a purchase anymore....until XDA or another dev forum finds a way around the security measure. And you will not buy from them...so long as HTC doesn't work with the carrier anymore, but if sales remain the same, they'll have no reason to stop.
So manufacturers/carriers don't need to change the way they implement security measures, they just need to keep making desirable phones and so long as others pick up the slack, they'll be able to capture the sales of the userbase that likes rooting their phones. This is going to continue being the case -- Android manufacturers will create phones and users will buy the phones on the promise that forums like XDA will make it better.
For real change to occur, sales have to be greatly affected.
Looks like the anti-root movement is beginning to snowball into a full fledged avalanche. I currently have a Droid X and it seems its locked bootloader has cause many devs to give up. Sure we have root and a few roms and themes to get rid of bloatware, but it isn't as great as a full unlock, not to mention lack of a true SBF for OTA 2.2 users.
HTC was going to be my next choice after I got bored with my X in about a year or so (more like 6 months). But it seems now that they've developed this tech for the G2, I'm sure all other carriers will want it on all future HTC devices. As soon a Samsung steps it up and creates their own locked bootloader, we'll all be SOL. What's left? Dell? Sony Ericsson?
Seems like all carriers will only be selling phones with locked bootloaders. I thought HTC was on our side, but the G2 is proof of the contrary. We need a manufacturer that embraces devs. With the recent bootloader unlocking failures seen with the Droid X and the difficulty seen with the Milestone, does anyone here think the development community can overcome the bootloader challenge?
HTC response to G2 complaint
emailed HTC to voice my displeasure. rather than ignoring my email, they felt compelled to reply with some low level, non-commital, and utterly moronic dribble especially in light of t-mobile already having released its lame-o statement. i also find it rather questionable that google had any part in this. too bad that HTC is following the Motorola model of duping folks into thinking they bought a device when all that money actually just buys time-limited, pre-defined functionality.
Without root Android wont be the same, looks like I'll be going back to Winders if this is the direction they are going to take it. They are taking all the fun out of it.

Sensation XE Lite.. to buy or not to buy..?

Firstly I'm new to Android Smartphones (had nothing worth mentioning since the original Iphone) so please go easy on the tech speak & I apologise if anything I'm asking is blatantly obvious.
I've got approx £300 to spend, and after reading quite a few reviews/comparisons of similarly priced devices this particular one seems to stack up quite well.
I can find almost nothing about about it though on specific phone forums such as this, will you be able to root, install custom roms & overclock this device..? and could anyone that knows point out the good/bad points of it.
Any contributions would be appreciated.
Thanks.

The Sensation is a great phone, I love mine. Great dev support, lots of ROMs and kernels to choose from. It can be overclocked. I am sticking with it and not going to the HTC One series since imho they have made a foolish decision to remove the SD slot and seal the battery in so it cannot be replaced.

[Q] Please help me make a smart decision

Hello
I'm looking for a 300€ or less smartphone that will last me 2 years a least and ended up with two deals that i found to be under the current price market:
a moto x first gen new for 250€ or a google nexus 5 new for 289€
as i see the nexus is a little bit stronger on paper and probably would get outdated way after the moto x, the only down side seems to be battery life but i think i could live with that if it lasts at least a day
The moto x is cheaper and does have a nice set of perks like better battery life, ergonomics and that motorola notification thingy, my only set back was reading about the amoled display getting burned after months of use and the gossip that motorola by now being owned by lenovo would stop getting updates after lollipop or soon after
In my country i there are no retail stores where i can check either one of the phones so i have to relay on reviews so your input on this matter would help me greatly especially if you have both or a least held them both, If i have to read another review on one of these phones ill gouge my eyes out
Am i way better of in the long run getting the nexus 5?
Thanks in advance
250 is a lot for first gen moto x.

You're better off in the long run making your own decisions and getting what you yourself want; not what people on a forum tell you to get.
I would recommend the Nexus 5

I cant make an informed decision since i cant test either one of the phones since i cant find them in any retail store in my country, i cant even held them in my hand. So before i order one i would like to get some input from people that used them.
Do you use a nexus 5 as your daily phone? Do you like it? Any turn offs besides the battery life?

Nor have all of us here used the Moto X. Asking here = biased answers.
Most of us like it. That's why we continue to own it. Knowing that does not help you. Read reviews of both. Battery life is fine.

I didn't ask you about moto x i asked you if you use the nexus 5 as your primary phone and what your personal opinion on the nexus 5 specifically, i dont get why it has to be biased. The moto x input i can get from their forums i hope.
I thought this was the right place for this kind of questions since everywhere else i get reviews like " i like the white back it matches my shoes". i was hoping i could get more useful input here since people are more informed than the usual user. Maybe i am mistaken or you are just having a bad day or something

You're asking in the Nexus 5 section, how people feel about the Nexus 5. We've already made our decision, hence we have a Nexus 5. The same goes for asking in any device section. I don't see how it helps you make a "smart" or "informed" decision if EVERYONE tells you that the device is great. Of course people will, everyone is different. I could say the Nexus 5 is the best phone ever and you should buy it, but someone in the Moto X section will say the same about the Moto X.
The right place for this kind of question is your own mind. It is only you who can decide what you want.

Yep. Because only the person owning it knows how comfortable they are with:
Budget
feature set
root-ability
custom ROM support
Official update support.
They're the only things that matter. Everything else can be learned from a review. OP should make a list of what he wants and make the decision that way.

So the only thing you have to say about the nexus 5 is that "its the best" you cant pinpoint any ups or downs of owning it like the screen is too big or too small, the screen hard to read in the sun, the cpu is weak or too strong for a daily user that doesnt play games, hard to use it with only one hand, etc. Seriously the only think you have to say is that its the best?
Maybe there is a linguistic barrier and im not making my self clear.
Please forget that i asked to pick between nexus 5 and moto x, since my second post im only asking about your personal experience with the phone.

Yeah maybe i should have been more specific, my bad.
the budget doesn't really mater since they are really close in price, im more concerned about the moto x not being supported for as long as the nexus 5 and the amoled screen getting burned after months of usage. the only downside i see from nexus 5 is the battery from what ive read and the camera not being great( i dont really care im not a photographer) and being slightly to big for one hand usage. And since i dont play any games at all would i even notice the weaker specs from the moto x. would the weaker specs be a good trade off for battery life?
Do you use nexus as your daily driver how do you like it?
Thanks
As I've said, its fine. I like it so I use it.

of course its subjective since i asked about your personal opinion thats what im looking for, the facts the specs i can google them. If you dont want to share your thoughts on the phone thats fine with me. I dont know anyone in real life that owns any one of the phones since you cant find the phone in retail in my country again i can only ask for subjective personal opinions in forums, i cant touch or try the phones i can only see videos or pictures of them and read about their specs when what i want are opinions from users.

To be fair, I'm trying to tell you the same thing as lethargy. Our personal opinions don't help you.
I would never pay 300 for a Nexus 5 in early 2015. I would only pay that price in November 2013.

Is this phone dead?

Hi, I know this things about dont ask about eta of new updates, etc. But I have a simple question. Does this device have active community? I see some roms, etc.. (still unusable becouse of softreboots caused by high-gps accuracy), but is there still something in development or is this device dead in this way?
I suppose at some point we'll get at the very least a custom Oreo, however seeing how custom Nougat is still not bugfree, I'd say it's pretty dead at this point.
Plus, for a couple months now there's been too much silence in this forum, which probably animated many people to jump ship.
Really sad to see since the hardware is so good even to this day considering the price. But softwarewise it's worse than anything I've experienced so far. Probably in large amounts thanks to Huawei, just to make that clear
I'm sure the devs around here did their best and I'm thankful there's at least a considerable amount of roms tp choose from.
The great job XDA is doing to advertise for Huawei is also a little annoying at times. I don't know much about software but whatever that "partnership" with Huawei did, it didn't do much for the consumer.
That's it for my rant, had to get it out No more Huawei!
Sent from my HUAWEI FRD-L09 using XDA Labs
The partnership has been good just for XDA itself. For user hasn't changed anything. Don't know if they released or not the source code of the device but if they did is strange that the actual existing rom have important issues. Btw i'm really greatful for developers who attempt to make a good rom for our device, but i prefer staying on stock and hoping for official Android Oreo. If this day won't come, i'll simply take in consideration the bad support from huawei/honor and the almost inexistent community here on xda when buying my next device.
P.s I'll tell this again. I'm very greatful to all the developers who attempt to give us good roms, this is just my tought and i don't meant to denigrate work of other people. Hope you understand
From what I read around the forum, they did release the source code, but partially. You can almost surely rule out development, as hard as they might try, the devs arent going to save a device with a dwindling number of users, especially when it seems that the company itself has abandoned the device. I just hope they are kind enough to just make good on their promise and provide Oreo. Its been less than an year that this device has been available in my country, it would be a shame to see a phone with hardware as good as this not supported less than an year after its launch.

I totally agree with you there. I just bought the honor 8 for the third time and this time I bought the 64g as I had planned on the honor 8 being my new long term device so yes honor better follow through with their promise to keep this phone updated or I just wanted my money and they will loose me as a heavy supporter of their brands. I'm a huge fan but if they aren't going to update their current honor flagship phone nor release anymore new models to take it's place in the US then what's the point of me remaining loyal to them.

Screw Samsung!

This is my first post and sorry for the ramble!
I am venturing off of iPhones and onto Androids because I have a big issue with spending $1000 on an iPhone XS Max unlocked phone and not being "allowed" to play with root. iOS 12.2 and up is not jailbreak-able... yet. Secondly, I have made some mistakes on my choice of Android phones too. I did not study up enough and have now bought 3 Androids and now have the 4th one on order (OnePlus 7 Pro). I should have looked at ROMs and MODs before deciding which to buy.
In the past two months I have purchased a Samsung Galaxy S8 because the price was decent... Now I am ready to give it to a xda developer for research and development. I am on my 4th 7 day wait period for oem lock to show up. I was almost there and didn't realize auto updates was on and 9.0 Pie installed overnight! Uggggh.
Then I bought a Moto G7 not realizing there wasn't much work being done with kernels and roms. I did root it and I do use it, but I wan't more.
Then I went back to Best Buy to grab a Pixel 3 XL only to find that they were out of stock. So, I made mistake 3... I bought a Pixel 3a XL. I rooted it, but not finding too much else being developed on it like the 3 XL.
I am a Linux fan and run 3 different Distros (Linux Mint, Kali Linux, and Fedora) and what I really want is a GOOGLE FREE Linux phone. I wanted to "Google Free" the Google Pixel 3 XL, but now all my efforts will be spent on the OnePlus 7 Pro making it a Google Free Linux phone.
So now I have two iPhones, (XS Max and XR), iPad, and three Android phones that I will have to do something with. LOL.
Anyways, I will be on here from time to time studying and hope to get to know some of you guys.

That's one plan as soon as a get a phone that they support, lol. There is great options like LineageOS available for the OnePlus that I ordered. Google was great back when they were the new search engine with new algorithm... Now they have grown into a world controlling monster and are in everything.
I downloaded the data they had on me.... 9.8 gigs of everything, everywhere and who with and how. Way too much data collection.
I'm trying to figure out why screw Samsung when you left auto update on.
Sounds like your trying to justify not studying before you buy a major purchase like this most of these devices have been out long enough. Not like you bought one on release day then was blasted with a locked bootloader. I have a us locked bootloader s8 and have had my share of issues with Samsung in general and I still laugh at posts such as these

Yes Mr. Obvious, I did. As I posted, I am moving off of Apple to Android and have a lot to learn. Maybe I should change the topic title to "Screw Samsung, Apple, Timers on bootloaders, Unlockable bootloaders in general, and Forum trolls." :silly:

Yes again you are correct, however, I clearly admitted "I did not study up enough" and have now bought 3 Androids and now have the 4th one on order (OnePlus 7 Pro). "I should have looked at ROMs and MODs before deciding which to buy." in case you missed it... :good: The Samsung S8 has been out since April 21st 2017 in the US with the Snapdragon processor, so it could be a lack of interest in the S8 that is the problem. The Moto G7 was released on March 20, 2019 but I rooted it the day same day I bought it without time delays etc. The Pixel 3a XL was release on May 8, 2019 and I was also able to root it on the day I bought it. These phone manufacturers should realize that there would be a nice increase in sales if they would make unlocking the bootloader easier like OnePlus and Google has. They have Knox and fuses that protect them from warrantying rooted phones anyways. OnePlus will soar in sales this year with theirs with encouraging aftermarket dev work and their OxygenOS. Google Dev is close in this developer programs. SO, screw Samsung. But in their defense... they make some awesome products.

Well, laugh away big boy. These forums always seem to have people that like to ridicule newbies. I'm 56 years old and own a Ethical Hacking and Penetration Testing company that also has a vBulletin information and development forums site, so I am aware of the games. To me, my post sounds funny, not *****y, but I also understand that it can be difficult to convey emotions and feelings by typing words.
I run into a lot of these technical roadblocks too when attempting to help a major corporations secure their systems from cyber threats. It's one of the reasons I have three different Linux OS distributions on my laptop with grub handling the multi-boot. Each distro has it's own great qualities.... just as these Android phone makes and models.
Have a good day young man.

Ahhhhhh it's not on you. I've in my time seen several of the posts and love to stir the pot. I've been in the same situation myself buying used devices. Thinking surely there would be something for it and plenty of times not.
I'm not opposed to having someone mail me phones for development if that's what you mean lol.
I'm on my 3rd S8 now lol.

I was wondering if anyone was going to actually read that post and catch that! Good job, you're the lucky winner of the perpetual 7 day wait OEM locked bootloader Galaxy S8!
BTW, tomorrow at 3:00 I am picking up a OnePlus 6T McLaren that I located. Then on the 9th, the OnePlus 7 Pro should be here. I'm going to be in hog heaven playing with these gadgets.
