The Touch Pro is a great phone. But some things can be improved.
I would like the communities help and will provide some of my own knowledge.
One of these problems is the camera and its video performance. Other phones using the same GFX chipset have been advertised to be able to do VGA (640x480) recording @ 30 FPS. The Raphael only does a maximum of QCIF (352x288) @ 25 FPS and even this drops to sometimes even 4 FPS in bad light conditions. Even videos made in maximum resolution lack a good bitrate and shows blocks (bad quality) when played back.
Taking things one step at a time I think we should try to improve the quality for the existing video mode. So I did some research on the forums. This is what I’ve found.
The way I see it is (even for pictures not only video) is that the camera switches to some kind of “night mode” as soon as it is pointed towards a dark area. This is automatic and happens by itself. We have to find some way to turn this off as it causes more problems than it solves. And no changing white balance from auto to something else does not help. I haven’t been able to find a solution for this so I need the communities help.
I’ve looked through the registry and found settings for bitrates and FPS. I’ve played with them and they don’t make any difference.
So does anyone have a solution to this “night mode” problem ? any ideas ? Once we solve this we can move on to solve the low bitrates problem.
All opinions are welcome.
I think the Touch Pro uses the same chipset as Xperia's X1a instead of the X1i's Qualcomm chipset. Probably one of those rolled of the same assemblely line but some got hardware options disabled.
In video recording, wish the camera would maintain fps instead of longer exposure time.
I just want to disable the low light compensation, the so called "night mode" because it sucks and thats what causes the camera slow down. Someone must be up to the task ?
Maybe we can rip the X1 camera software when it comes out ?
Without the drop in the FPS, there would not be enough light exposure to capture any discernable image. You would end up with 30fps of black screen. The CCD and image processor simply aren't strong enough to compensate, and I doubt there's any software fix available.
There was a temporary fix for the very same problem on the Kaiser. Go into camera mode turn the screen off for about 15 sec and turn it back on . A bug in the camera software would disable the low light compensation. The pictures and videos were darker but not completely black so to say. They were very viewable but the performance was super improved. The same bug does not exist in the Raphael. But there must be some way to turn it off.
StashCompInc what?! Almoste everyday I find new issues about htc latest ppcs  .. so pitty..
Have you tried to contact Ateksoft? Let's hope that they will release something for the latest qualcomm devices
http://www.ateksoft.com/
They dont have any email on thier site. And any thing you ask them about their coolcamera software they dont reply. I wonder if there is a developer here that can create a new camera software ?
Im wondering about this problem as well. There must be a way to override this function.. the Cam is actually OK under wery bright light conditions. But as soon as it gets a litte darker, the cam is unusable. Ive noticed that if you change the whitebalance under some lighting conditions there is a small improvement. Still no fixes for this problem? you should think with the prosessor and the ram in this device there should be no problem getting the cam viewer to work properly..
We need a new camera software which supports video, 640*480 @ 30 FPS. Wonder if anyone on the forum can write one ?
But will that fix the choppy cam viewer? Or will it just make it worse? I saw somebody mention that the ccd chip just werent good enough. And that should suggest that this is a hardware issue. But if someone could provide us with a new cam software we would know for sure. or at least find a solution to override the nightmode it goes in to when dark or darker lighting conditions.
Yeah, CoolCamera is a software but does not work with the Raphael. Thier support does not answer questions for a new version update.
hmm. okey. Then all we can do is wait and see if perhaps somebody here in the forum maybe comes with a solution.
I dont think there will be, we had the same problem with the Kaiser and still no solution.
Thats a shame. I didnt buy this device cause of the cam. But when i notice that the cam actually functions good under some conditions, im just annoyed by the fact that its not optimized. i really cant se the problem in fixing this. But if the responce from HTC support is that the pro is not a multimedia device, end of story. Then it seems that we wont get any further with this.
Yeah I know but we dont have a choice. I need a device that does everything since I dont want to carry more than one device. And this seems to be the best bet.
Someone here should mod the CoolCamera Software or the HTC one or maybe make one completely new one.
I think you already know this, but the camera in TP is limited due to some patent issues in America. That's the reason why X1i(international) records better video than X1a(america). I believe it's the software which is limiting the video resolution and camera fps.
Do not expect anything better from HTC unless they make an european version of the device. Now it's the same device for all over the world.
So you also believe this to be a software issue rather than bad hardware? If so then somebody should be able to change the coolcamera software as mentioned before or to make fixes to the software thats allready in the TP. I also bought this product to get a sort off all in one device. And as said before, i didnt expect the cam to perform as good as my N95. But i did expect it to be usable. And as it is now, its really a pain in the ass. Now im seriously thinking about getting another device. And its a damn shame. Cause the TP i just a really beautiful and practical device..
That should not stop others (developers) from modding or porting a new camera software.
My old XDA IIi is able to record VGA video @12-15fps with CoolCamera whereas the maximum that can be achieved via HTC software is QVGA @15fps ! So, a piece of software can definitely help !
Yeah exactly and that phone is old by far. The Raphael has a lot more power just limited by video. Someone please write/hack (from another device X1 ?) a better camera software !!! I will pay for it if it has improvements !
I used to have an LG Viewty, and I hated it. Absolutely loathed it. The only thing worth having on the phone was the slow motion video recording - 120 frames/second.
I know this is a slightly niche feature, but as a golfer I found it really useful. Seeing that people have been able to enable things like 720p recording, will it theoretically be possible to increase the frame rate as well? So lower res, but with a frame reate of at least 50? Or is this a fundamental thing with the sensor?
Bump.
I own a Samsung Galaxy S and my girlfriend has got a S8500 Wave. She can do high-fps videos with her camera app, but in the Galaxy S its not available.
Im wondering what causes this, as far as I know both mobiles have nearly the same hardware specs, so the Galaxy S should be able to do slow motion capturing. Only thing different between the phones is that the Wave runs badaOS while the SGS runs Android.
Would it be possible to tweak the camera to allow it?
Necro, could this be possible to do with a app or something...
is there realy noone who knows anything about this? i think its a realy cool feature that has to work somehow since the DroidX has slomo capturing.. I searched everywhere but it seems noone is interested..
Does anyone know anything about it?
I'm really interested in knowing more about this as well. I actually ended up buying the Viewty at the time, simply due to the niche slow motion feature and since I'm into animation, I used that as a quick reference tool to study motion.
This would be an awesome niche feature as most of the high-end smartphones coming out now seem to be quite similarly spec'd. I currently have a HTC DHD and did look around initially for something like this to get slow mo but no result.
Wish more people would take interest into it.
Maybe we should screen the entire season of Spartacus again to get everyone interested again, eh?

Hey all,
I've had the Z5 for a year now and one thing about it just bugs me. This might just be me but I'm sure all of you have noticed this as well. In almost every other phone (iPhone, Galaxy, LG, etc.) the camera preview (basically the live feed of the camera when you're in the app) is pretty much what the picture is going to look like.
I don't find that this is the case on the Z5. I was in Japan for a few days this past summer and got a chance to use a family friend's Xperia Z2 (NTT Docomo carrier branded). It was still on KitKat, but the camera app was absolutely buttery smooth and the feed looked good. The pictures taken with my Z5 look great after they process, don't get me wrong, but the camera feed quality in-app is just downright awful, not to mention the camera as a whole is a bit laggy. For something with an 810 I don't think this is a hardware limitation.
Don't know if most people even notice this or consider it an issue but it'd be nice to have some sort of solution (I've found nothing on this after many online/Google searches).
Edit: Don't know why this was moved to troubleshooting. It's not just a thing that I'm experiencing, it's all Z5s.
I don't own a z5 but I saw your post on reddit anyway.
I'm basing my knowledge on my experience messing with camera on my Z3 compact.
Regarding the low quality preview, the preview resolution could be just set too low with the QCameraParameters::setPreviewSize function. You could probably manually set it in the Camera apk.
Buttery smooth viewfinder has to do with preview fps, could maybe be controlled in apk as well or at firmware level. Some phones were lucky enough to just have text files to edit parameters.
Anyway, if you don't know how to mess with either then there's nothing you can do, otherwise someone else with your phone can have a look at it (if anyone cares ).

Thank you. Viewfinder was the correct term I was looking for. I did some digging with that term and found out that on Z2 4.4.2, the viewfinder FPS was not limited/60, and they apparently decreased after the update to 4.4.4. I think The Z3 series and onwards have all had the viewfinder FPS software-limited, maybe for heat/battery reasons.

People who never cared about this might care after seeing the video above^. I really want to see if there's enough interest in the subreddit or on these forums to maybe get some edited parameters for the camera APK. I don't expect Sony to change this in any future update though, especially with how prone to overheating the 810 is. Thanks for the insight.
Hi, with that wonderful 4K HDR screen I would certainly not miss out on the VR. It seems that now LCD can show very low latency, so it could be as compatible as OLED.
Anyway if it might not meet the Google's exact requirements, would it have a way to still enable Daydream by a root or something?
Thanks for your help!

I actually want to know this as well. I think I read that even if the phone could get setup for daydream, overheating could be an issue. In any case, a professional input would be nice.
I also want to know.

The LCD screen of the XZ Premium unfortunately doesn't have the minimum requirements of the response time, so DayDream doesn't work, but there's another way to get VR support on the XZP, it is called Trinus VR, works with CardBoard and other lenses, Trinus let you play all the Steam VR and NON-VR games that you have on your PC on your phone (in this case the XZ Premium), this is the only way to get contents in VR for the XZ Premium.

I have installed the Daydream APK on the XZ Premium + the Controller Emulator on my old Xperia Z5, it shows the Bluetooth Emulated Controller as connected, but it doesn't get detected by the Daydream Application. If anyone makes progress on that, feel free to respond.
To anybody who's done this, How was the experience?? Do you suggest buying this phone for VR use?
Thanks.
Good Luck
The Xperia XZ Premium Does Not Support Daydream. But guess what! You don't need Daydream anyway. It's just a managing Application to access VR content. It's in no way a protocol necessary to process VR whatsoever. You don't even need google Cardboard. (don't even bother install it).
The XZP is the Best phone to experience VR, period. That 4K Display works, and It makes a real difference. Way better than the GearVR on the Note 7.
About the LCD display, the latency is a myth. There's no such thing as "LCD display is not responsive enough", etc... Maybe on the Z5 Premium there was some issue because the phone itself was not responsive enough. But the Snapdragon 835 too care of that for the XZP.
This said, yes, of course Amoled is more responsive. But that doesn't mean that "LCD is not responsive enough". At the processing level of the snapdragon 835, you won't notice any differences. But what you will definitely notice is that LCD has way more brightness and image quality to offer. LCD is not taboo for VR. The reason why Daydream is not available on the XZP is because of Sony's poor marketing strategy, lack of collaboration skills with other firms.
To give you an example to support this claim, here's a link to the Pimax 8K upcoming VR Headset, which itself uses LCD Display for VR:
https://www.roadtovr.com/hands-pimaxs-8k-headset-proves-high-fov-vr-coming/
---------------------- BUT
Before rushing to a store to get that XZP, you must first decide why do you want VR for:
- If you want to watch 360/180 videos and 3D movies on a big screen and maybe try some VR games available on the Playstore, then don't stop. Keep running fast!
- But if you focus way more on games and don't care much about videos, then there's the issue that you won't find any VR games that supports 4K. And if you use the ADB modification on your phone to make it display 4K all the time, then you may run into some "heating" problems. And even then, games may crash and not work properly. So don't go buy the XZP for 4K VR gaming. That won't happen. (Right now your only option for that is the Pimax 4K which requires a high end pc. Even the occulus, PSVR or HTC Vive can't offer 4k gaming). But if you're ok with 2k gaming available on the Playstore, then the XZP will play those without problems.
And finally, if for you a wider library of VR Games is too important, then you'd be better with a Samsung phone because of their Occulus app. Occulus has a very strong game library for the GearVR. And even more will come since the GearVR is by far the most successful VR headset.
-------- Conclusion:
1. Forget about Daydream. You don't need it.
2. The XZP's 4K Display offers the best VR experience available.
3. The XZP IS the phone to get to watch VR movies and videos.
4. The XZP will play any VR games available on the Google playstore at 2K resolution.
5. If you want a VR experience focused just on games and want a wider VR games library, you'll be better off with a high end Samsung phone.

I still want to be able to use it though. There are some apps that are limited to it. I tried side loading Netflix VR but I can't control it without Daydream. What really irks me is that it works in the background but I can't use it because of the annoying pop up.
To be honest, I don't care if the experience is not "ideal", I'd at least like the option to judge for myself.
I guess I'll just have to wait for root and Magisk. Even then, we'll be stuck playing mouse and cat with Google if we want to keep Android Pay.

Well, I can tell you one thing, the worst case scenario is that the experience is exactly the same as in any other phones. The XZ premium plays any game available for cardboard "AT LEAST" as good as the Gear VR. And this is from someone who had to give his Note 7 back!
This said, there's an app called "Groovr", (a music visualization app) which is awesome, but it's only available for Occulus or Daydream. There are no cardboard options for it. Meaning that yes, some titles will not be available to you without Occulus or Daydream. Only a root can fix that.
What I find shameful is that those libraries are locked under false pretends. Google claiming that a display has to be Amoled for VR while an LCD 4K Display brings by far the best VR experience, is outrageous.
Steam tried to do a similar thing when they backed up HTC Vive and the Occulus Rift wasn't truly supported. They had to fix that later fearing a lawsuit from Facebook. That's the problem with companies and their formats / platform wars. In the end it's always the Customers who is confused.
Is there any way to force 120hz in apps and games...
Like on OnePlus there is the ADB command.
Because on games that support 120hz I get max 60 even if I choose it in the menu of the game.
Thank you
I'm also interested in this as well
Hey guys,
Really liking the phone, but there one major deal breaker, it does not go to 120hz on most games I have tried, such as grimvalor, subway surfers, oddmar, etc.
For some reason real racing 3 and pubg works, but others donot.
what also baffles me is youtube does not work at 120hz? but when you install youtube vanced, it works at 120hz. I'm aware coloros whitelists apps, and I wonder if there is a way to bypass that.
Any ideas how to force it via adb commands? have tried coloros_screen_refresh_rate (similar method for oneplus phones) and it deselects the option in the settings like oneplus, but the games still run at 60hz.
I wish there was an app like autohz that works with this phone. I tired contacting the developer and said he only supports phones he has (which is the galaxy s20 and oneplus phones).
I can imgaine there is nothing like autohz yet because of the community is not as vast, but this phone is really good and fully capable.
I don't know why they don't let us have 120hz everything or even a full 90hz option, if the phone dies we can charge it in 30 mins
Hello everyone, I just mailed the support (fr) and I got this reply :
We would like to inform you that an update is planned for a better gaming experience at 120hz.
We invite you to wait and activate the automatic update in order to benefit from the next corrections.
I hope this is not a joke because i feel fooled playing a 60fps...

Imagine.... I sold my ROG phone 2 and got the oppo just to find games dont work above 60fps. If they dont fix this my next phone wont be an OPPO! Its a shame because i think its one of the best phone on the market.
No one has other ideas to increase the amount of fps in games?

I heard they will update and fix this. Probably by then I will get another phone. £1100 phone but cant use the specs at maximum . I can get over the low call volume, blown highlight in pictures and worst lense flare I ever seen. But locking games on 12gb ram and SD865...too much.
This is what I used for getting 120hz forced

But it's not permanent after a reboot it's gone then you need to set it up again
