Netflix HDR Content - Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 Guides, News, & Discussion

What are your thoughts on watching Netflix HDR Content on the tab s6? I'm a little underwhelmed by it.

Netflix HDR sucks in general. The key to HDR is bright and colorful images with sharp contrast. Netflix just turns the brightness down on everything and calls it HDR. Even on my 4K UHD television Netflix sucks.

How does it look when rooted ?

Hello, my question is... has anyone rooted the tab s6 after the last software update and still getting this issue above?

I tried playing some 4K Hdr 60fps (2160p 60 Hdr) videos on the YouTube app (updated version) on my xzp .. although it did play but it was slow as hell.. I tried several times on several videos and it's always the same problem that happened.. Notice that everything works flawlessly on my xzp and all apps and system are up to date.

I also have the same issue running the videos at 480p HDR works but obviously 480p looks rubbish these days. 1080p is slightly faster than 4k but still slow. I watched horizon zero dawn and it does look amazing on this 4k screen I feel like I can tell the difference between it and my 4k non Hdr bravia because its not been given Hdr support even though it is capable. It could be due to the snapdragon 835 not being able to process 4k and Hdr at the same time. My device warms up more when playing 4k files more so than when I play games. It could also be due to 60fps on the videos so ill try look for a 30fps one see if it works with that.
Edit: doesnt seem like I can find a 30fps one at the moment. I do have this video downloaded and playing it through the video app works flawlessly. https://youtu.be/74SZXCQb44s
If you want to download some clips just search Google for Hdr clips theres 2 websites I found that work.
http://demo-uhd3d.com/categorie.php?tag=hdr
http://4kmedia.org
Those are the 2 websites I found.
Edit2: the videos on YouTube also play flawlessly at 720p HDR

Well if it due to the chipset, shame on you Sony for selling us a "4k Hdr screen" with an incapable processor for doing such a job.
I can't see any option on the YouTube app to play 4k Hdr content on 30fps (as the default remains to 60) and yes the phone is getting warm in a noticeable level (even warmer than playing 3d games or shooting 4k videos).
On the other hand, native 4k videos on the YouTube app are working like a charm at the highest frame and no overheat at all
Hdr update in hight resolutions have a bug.
In s8 2k hdr laggy
Wait next update

Well I do notice a difference between Hdr and sdr I downloaded an Hdr video in 4k from YouTube to see if it lagged but it didnt because the downloaded file didnt actually have HDR so I thought id do a side by side comparison and the difference is noticeable.
Left side is a screenshot from YouTube in 4K HDR and the right side is the downloaded file in 4K SDR.
The dowloads YouTube doing external server no youtube

The GPU is more than capable of 4K delivery. Whether or not your network is any good or not is a different matter, 4K is brutal on bandwidth.

I'am talking about 4k Hdr videos .. Not native 4k as I said it before it works flawlessly on the YouTube app.. I'm on unlimited 4g+ plan btw
Try playing some 4k hdr videos on the YouTube app (change resolution to 2160p60 Hdr) and tell us if it plays smoothly or not (like it's in slow motion)
Same issue, if i try to play a video on youtube app at 4k hdr the video go very slow like slow motion
Yes same problem for me, play video 4k hdr 60fps on youtube app and its in slow motion (960fps )

Well I would say right side picture looks better, left one is just warmer and darker.
Shouldn't it be opposite? I can see more details, brighter shadows on the right picture.
Are you sure left one is HDR? If so I would stick with no hdr as for me it looks better and does not have such yellow tint to make picture look warmer / oversaturated.
It's more natural with brighter shadows.

My brother said the same thing but after he saw the video on YouTube although it stuttered he said it could be more realistic if you considered the direct sunlight on his face. The right one looks like someone shone a light bulb at his face but the left one does look like sunglight. If you watch the video yourself you will be able to notice the difference. I know it is Hdr because I took a screenshot from YouTube at 4k Hdr while it lagged.
Having the same problem. All YouTube 4k HDR @60fps videos play with a lot of stutter that makes videos unwatchable. HDR on YouTube seems to only work at 720p HDR @60fps.
Is there a common denominator between your phones experiencing the issue as on mine it all plays flawlessly with no heat or lag. What firmware are you running??
Latest XZP firmware (EE UK variant). Playing the above video at 2160p60 in HDR causes stutter in the video. It's not my Internet because the audio is totally fine and it doesn't stop to buffer the video. 720p60 in HDR is smooth.

Im using amazon UK varient purchased from eBay UK and im also having the issue. Your correct, its not network speed because I have a fast Internet connection and all 4k 60 videos play fine on my bravia including the one provided although my bravia only supports Hdr through usb. I think it might be Googles fault. Apparently the S8 has the same issue at 2k 60 as we may see when we play at 2k or even 1080p. Only 720p works for now but its blurry. I blame Google for using vp9 which is hard for devices to play. Even some TV's cant use Hdr because their cpu cant handle vp9. The snapdragon 835 should be more than capable. I feel that some tvs have a worse cpu than that and it works too so I also blame software. We should get an update from Google/Sony if not both soon to solve the issue. They cant leave it like this forever else its a flaw in Android.

I agree, The phone can play HEVC 10bit 4k content without any issues whatsoever. it has the grunt to do it, if its not working then what it lacks is the proper backing of the app.

My Youtube no longer have the 4k Option after Oreo update. is this normal ?

Hi.
so after the update, I no longer have the 4k viewing option. only full HD. is this normal ?
How do I get it back ?
Thanks
4k is still there. It is removed, however, for 4k HDR content due to an issue with the app.
For normal non HDR videos 4K is still there. But videos with HDR is now limited to 1080p due to performance issues with pretty much every device: http://www.androidpolice.com/2017/11/04/hdr-youtube-app-now-maxes-1080p/
Shame they don't offer an option to just watch the non-HDR version instead.

How to force the screen into HDR mode?

Good day everyone,
Like you all know, one of the main features of the XZ Premium is the 4K HDR screen, and if used to watch 4K HDR content like i do most often, you'll notice the phone will switch to HDR mode every time you play an HDR video,
You can check out for yourselfs right now, all you need to do is just split the screen and open an HDR video you'll see the screen colours will change like never seen before.
So I want to know how to control switching between SDR and HDR modes manually.

You need HDR content to see HDR colors HDR is always on but you need HDR content for it.
No, it's always off, it became on only when you play HDR video.

Man those words I written means you need HDR video or image because without HDR content you can't see those colors by other means it on but but because it doesn't use until you viewing a HDR content you can't see different (that's means it doesn't matter it off or not until you viewinh HDR content and we the difference)

hdr on android 9 working ?

i tried hdr on or off while in manual settings on the new photo app of android 9 but i see no difference, did i miss something or is it just disabled by sony on xz premium to force us to buy a new phone if we want hdr photo ? is there a hdr in video mode ? i also see no difference bewteen a 4k video on android8 and and android 9 (but there is no hdr toggle for video in android 9 so it does not seem available on xz premium ( by hdr video i mean raising the shadows and providing details in the highlights such as the sky and not the other hdr type that requires a hdr monitor)

oh i understand now, HDR for videos is not available on XZP its not a software thing, our device simply doesnt support HDR video recording.
as for photos, I dont notice a difference mostly, but I think auto includes auto HDR because also on oreo i didnt notice a difference unless its in outdoors with a lot of trees and colorful environment there could be a slight difference noticed

the snapdragon 835 can do hdr video capture( https://www.qualcomm.com/products/snapdragon-835-mobile-platform ) and the camera sensor is the same on xzp and xzp2 so it is just sony disabling features in older phones to force you to buy their latest phone. UPDATE : it seems the image pipeline was redone for xz2 premium so we are out of luck with our "old" xz premium if we want hdr video.
The XZ Premium can't record HDR Videos (4K)
But we got SDR TO HDR Conversion. It's the "new" video image enchantment. Sony support confirmed it on Twitter DMs. As the name says, it works on video and it can work on a few apps that they don't mention which.

I have tried it and so can you, I can confirm, here is how I tested:
watched the video on youtube
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1XTvrXLfheI&t=49s
was very very crisp and detailed but the video isnt HDR, so I gave it a shot and downloaded the video with 4k youtube downloader app on my PC and placed the video on my device, then watched it there, total different story mate!! I am so happy! I started flipping between recent's app going to youtube and back to the video app (or photo they both support it) while I was watching the same video on both, and I was shocked to see that its ALOT more colorful and dynamic in the video app than on youtube (set on 4k on youtube).
I was skeptical about it but now that I tried, I can confirm with full confidence that we have SDR to HDR!
try it your self and let me know if you notice it too

you are talking about hdr video playback, i am speaking about hdr video capture (but again not in a hdr video codec, just raising details in the shadows and the highlights by combining multiple exposures in a non hdr video codec, exactly what is done in hdr photo and like what you see here : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HgyR00UiWJE )
XZ Premium uses BionzX for camera , and it does not support HDR recording. On XZ2 and on camera uses Qualcomm ISP for camera processing.

Possible to force 4k streaming on Android?

I know Android is likely limited to 1080p by widevine L1, but is there any way to force / trick Disney+, Netflix, Hulu, HBOMax and other streaming services currently serving low quality 1080p streams to Android phone / tablet users to serve proper 4k?
I get that most Android devices are FHD+ but they would still benefit hugely from 4k steams that are much higher bitrate, have much wider gamut color (bt.709 vs bt.2020) and more coherent HDR mapping.
I have an S22+ and a Tab S8 Ultra on 1gbps fiber. Watching 4k YouTube is awesome, but recent content like Obi-Wan on Disney+ or Love, Death & Robots on Netflix are an unbearably grainy low bitrate mess - an experience that's remarkably poor for a premium device. Worse than even 1080p streamed via edge/safari or a pc/mac desktop Disney+ app.
Is there any way to make the (non YouTube) streaming experience on Android less terrible?
I really wish there was a solution to this It's 2023 and it is shocking that YouTube is still the only app that can do this
Hello my friends. Havent we had any solution so far ? I have a google TV stick and I would like to force 4K or 2K instead of 1080p.
