It was a good run - LG V20 Guides, News, & Discussion

Well, it has come time to finally say good by to my beloved V20. I must say, there have been a lot of up's and down's with this phone. First when I bought the phone, I went into the purchase not knowing if we would ever get root, much less a custom ROM. I feel very greatful for @x86cpu for keeping us up to date and relevant with Leneage, @Omar-Avelar for the beautifully smooth kernel, @me2151 for bringing us root during Christmas via Dirty Santa while my little one was in the hospital post-op heart surgery. I'm sad to say goodbye to the V20 scene, but my poor phone has gone through enough, it has been dropped, stepped on, thrown by little one's hands, took a 40 foot falls from a roller-coaster, and just abused about as much as a phone can. Yes, I have rebuilt the phone multiple times, but it has finally take it last breath and the CPU has just about had it with all the pubg mobile it can take. I say farewell to those that are still on this endeavor and hope to see you in another forum.
Thank you all,
cmdmoto

Inspire screen question

I am seriously considering jumping ship from my Craptivate to the Insipre. The main thing holding me back to the screen. I realize it will be somewhat of a downgrade from the Captivate's, but my question is how much so? For those that just made the switch, are you already missing the Captivate's gorgeous screen? Or is the difference not that bad? I'm just scared that I'll miss the dark blacks and vibrant colors to much and maybe regret it.
I'm also curious as to the ease of messing with different ROMs/kernals and such. I've had the Captivate since launch day, but it was my first Android phone. I came from iOS, which I was very familiar with 'messing with'. Anyways, I learned the ins-and-outs of the Captivate and Android in general soon after I got it, and I probably flashed new ROMs over a hundred or so times over the last 7 months. I know my way around the Captivate very, very well now, and am wondering how much of that knowledge will translate to this as I am already running across unfamiliar terms on this forum like gold cards and such. I am already noticing a few Captivate developers jumping ship, which is helping to sway me to the HTC side. I am still missing my GPS way to much, and am tired of keeping my old 3gs (not activated) in my car to make sure I had access to a reliable GPS when needed, which I would tether to my Captivate to use.
You should go into the store and see the phone for yourself. I have both phones and I think the screen is as good or better then the captivate.

That's what I wanted to hear, thanks. I do live pretty much next door to an AT&T store, so I guess I'll go check it out in a second. I just wanted to hear from people that already have some real-world use with the Inspires and Captivates, versus a 5 minute try-out I'd have at the store. Thanks for your reply, appreciated.
Lets face it the Craptivates screen is nice but the phone is a true to life FAIL.
You will not miss your phone once you have a fast/stable phone that has the only drawback of a not so loud speaker (this will be fixed down the line, some using a custom rom already see improvements in sound)
We already have root, custom kernels and roms.
Its only day 4 and the xda community have accomplished so much, and trust me this is just the tip of the iceberg.

Man, I'm going to be talked into this within the hour! I'm trying to get my wife to switch as well, as she still has a 3gs. She wants a new phone (reason she never jumped to an ip4), but keeps saying she's waiting until something that jumps out is released. Also, the problems that she knows I've been having with my Captivate is not helping matters on the Android front, although I try explaining that most are isolated to the Captivate and the fact that I'm running basically beta ROMs just to get the newer Froyo. She's not took shabby technology wise either, as she is able to do quite a lot with her iphone like jailbreaking, ssh'in into it, and all kinds of other tweaks available with jailbroken iphones. I think she'd much rather Android, because she's really into messing with the UI and such to get it more to her liking.
Thanks for the advice.
Also thatclaw, the GPS on the Inspire is fast as hell. On Valentines day I need to get to the place where we here having dinner. Started Maps, hit my location and within a second, boom there I was and it was right on spot.

You're welcome, heres a bit more to contemplate.
I have to admit the one other drawback, the 1250 mAh battery.
If you are not 24-7 texting or playing with the phone it should be fine and last you an entire day like it does with me with ONE daily charge unless Im using the phone like crazy.
Then again that's why CHARGERS and USB cables were invented, I have them in 3 or 4 select locations so I'm never out of juice.
In the 4 days Ive had it Ive noticed the battery is getting better and better with the battery charges.
If on the other hand your wife is always on the phone as well perhaps a phone with a bigger battery would serve her better. , ack Im going to say it the Atrix or maybe something a few months ahead.
Im more than happy with my Inspire though, Dual Cores be damned.
The only problem with the Inspire's screen is you can see the touchscreen grid under certain angles.
Kinda annoying, but not too bad.

While battery life is important, we are both fine as long as its decent. We both commute to work (charge in car) and both usually keep a charger at work. So going a full day is not a necessity nor expected, especially for me because use my phone very heavily during the day. >1.5 hours of talk time, and usually >2.5 hours of screen time before 5pm. I always plug in my phone while at my desk. The only time I need it to last is when I'm out and about, at bars and such, which I don't really use heavily then. I just want something reliable, of good quality, snappy, and a freaking working GPS. I live in the city (NOLA) and am always on the go throughout the day to places I've never been to meet up with clients, etc. A working GPS is very important, and I'm tired of not having that over the last 7 months.
How easy is it to swap ROMs and such as compared to the Captivate? Although I have nothing to compare the Captivates processes to, I find it very easy and pain free for the most part on it. As a matter of fact, probably half the time I flash is while on the road and in traffic (no lectures please, I'm careful mostly wait till redlights to do things). I'm scared I'll be starting from scratch again, and will have to re-learn everything. I'm not the one to post questions about rooting/flashing/etc. that can easily be found with a little effort, when I know I can find everything I need by just reading up and searching. Although I know people on here are usually glad to help, I'm not the one that needs someone to hold my hand as I know the information can be found on my own, and I find I learn better this way. I'm just worried that the Inspire won't be that simple, because I'm running across too many unfamiliar terms already. BTW, my self-suffiency is evidenced by my post count, and I've been coming here and for knowledge and know-how since I got the Captivate in July. I'd like to keep it this way, but just am worried it won't be the same for some reason.
Also, a big thanks to everyone who chimed in already so quickly, its much appreciated and makes me want to be more involved with this great community, and not just be a lurker coming here daily (multiple times) only to read up, check for updates, grabs tools, etc.

No you must flash Roms while driving if not you are Un-American, hahaha.
Yeah I understand youre so used to the Craptivates way of doing things.
I would say go here and see for yourself what steps there are

What if I told you that I was a commercial pilot, and the 'red lights' I spoke of do not really exist?
Just joking, but knowing me, I probably would. Guess that's why I'm NOT a pilot.
Ive had a captivate since august, picked up a inspire last night.
Stock for stock the inspire is worlds better, but the captivate @ 1.4ghz with voodoo color and a good rom is proving hard to leave behind. The captivate has such little available memory once everything is loaded up compared to the inspire, Ill give it a good week before I decide.
I am personally preferring the Inspire screen so far. I like the more muted look, but not washed out like say, the 3GS.

If you're having a tough time deciding between an insanely tricked out Captivate and a completely stock Inspire, imagine what the Inspire will be like in a couple months when the dev community blossoms.

absolutely, Its always fun to get in on the ground floor with a new phone and follow all the development excitement.

In the Sh$tter

I new that one day it would happen...
Several close calls over the years, but yesterday my G2x did a swan dive out of my shirt pocket into the crapper.
AND IT SURVIVED.
The phone thought that the headphone jack was plugged in for about 2 hours, but finally cleared...
G2X I LOVE YOU
that's awesome.
such great news! lets hope everyone else is just as lucky as you if our phones drop in the toilet!
I just love this post because earlier today at work, we were discussing different ways we had lost our phones over the years and this was probably one of the most common, one of the things I had brought up was how much an insurance replacement was for this phn and how it would be the most expensive visit to the john I had ever made!
I hope I never have to find out for myself, but if the porcelain gods ever frown on me and demand a phone sacrifice, I can laugh in their faces, after, of course, I thoroughly disinfect both myself and my phone after retrieval.

I really can't complain..

I just wanted to express my opinion on how I feel about my cappy after having it for a couple years. Aside from the obvious gripes, this phone has held up well.. I've flashed this phone hundreds and hundreds of times, and it still runs like it did the day I got it. I've dropped it, gotten it wet, taken it apart down to the last piece, its endured freezing cold weather conditions, heat, etc,.. I know ill always look back on my captivate as one of my favorite phones(I've had a lot). Thanks to the devs for making and continuing to make this phone what it is..

I agree.
While I have only had mine for about a year now it has been great.
Last week it got totally soaked on Splash Mountain at Disneyland when I took my wife and kids. I credit the body glove case and screen protector as well as just plain old good design. As soon as I got off the ride, I popped the case and battery cover. There was not one drop of water in the case interior. The phone has been running just fine.
I have dropped it, tossed it, sat on it. It's been a trooper.
Whenever I pop it out of it's case I am still amazed by how thin it is.
I finally worked up the nerve to replace the ROM. I had previously rooted it, then upgraded to GB through Kies and had that damned tethering process close error that a lot of people had. So I figured now is a good time as any. Spent a few days doing some research on the various ROM's available.
I chose Andromeda. It appears to be very stable and user friendly. I have previously rooted and borked over my nook color and tablet many times. I fairly comfy with the processes involved. I did have a snag I ran into, but I was able to work around it. So my phone is now fully ROM'd and running super great. I did make a full backup in case I wanted go back to stock, but that's not gonna happen. This will be kept with my other favorite phones: Droid Razr V1, Samsung BlackJack II. Man that phone was awesome for me.
This captivate phone though while outdated in terms of the phones available right this second is still great. Fast CPU, good amount of RAM, fast GPU, excellent screen. I love it. Once again Samsung impresses me. I love their products.
I've had one for only a year so far. Bought it used, flashed it a bunch, bricked it, jig'd it, flashed it some more. Gave it to my son, gave it to my wife and it will soon go back to my son for another year of use. The biggest gripe any of us has had with it is the lack of a flash for the camera... and the occasional lockup, but a battery pull and it's all good.
can't complain either. i came from an iphone 4 cuz i wanted to try an android and how to flash roms and kernels before making a huge commitment to a more expensive model.
I have to admit, this 2-3 year old phone is pretty snappy running slin ics.
can't wait to sell my iphone 4 and look for a newer device, but then again, this captivate does everything i need already. haha

Random little "thank you" thread.

This is kinda random and weird but I don't care.
I was about to smash my phone (the sidekick, of course) into a wall multiple times before throwing it off the top of the empire state building and burning the pieces I could find, and then blowing up samsung for being annoying to no end.
I just wanted to say thanks to all the people who have been working hard at Sidekick 4G development. I didn't end up doing the above because a)I wouldn't have a phone after that, and b)If I don't have enough money to pay for a lawyer after the last part, then I most definitely don't have enough money to pay for a new phone. So I just said "oh well, gotta make the best of it". Obviously that's way easier said than done, but with the help of you guys my phone coolness rate (and patients) went from -50 to about 5,000,000,000,000,000,000.
I'm not sure if I can tag people or whatever in a thread, but whoever is a part of the dev in any way, thank you very much. If I won the lottery, I would give you guys half the money. I would probably also buy a new phone, but that's besides the point. It sounds like this phone is frustrating at (a lot) of times, to say the least, but you guys keep working and it is highly appreciated. Without you I would have no phone, and would probably be in jail for the rest of my life.
Thank you again!!!
P.S. Some things in this thread were a little bit dramatized. Although I am almost sure a lot of you have had the same disturbing thoughts, I just wanna say that I am in no way responsible if anyone gets any ideas and goes crazy blowing crap up.
Thanks for reading. Remember to vote up there.

Leaving Foster Family After 7 Years, I don't want to leave my friends

This will probably be long a story so strap yourself in, it's going to be a bumpy ride.
My name is Ian, I have just turned 15 this Christmas and I have been in long term foster care for 8 years now and have been with the same family in the same village the whole time. I have 2 of the greatest friends I have ever had in my life. But for the past year I have begun to lose one of them to drugs. His name is Chris, his sister is called Eloise and I have been in love with her for the last three years I have known Chris. And for the past 4/5 months we have had been going out, now Eloise has anxiety and depression which I love about her because I wanted to impact her and help her to overcome these mental illnesses. I hate to see her cry so I always tried to make her smile by telling her funny stories or stupid jokes. Eloise's family do not have much money at the moment and her brother Chris used to joke about them being poor so to make Eloise smile I used to do this to but it really upset her which I was not aware of as I do not think before I speak. Things like this have been building up, me not being aware that I'm being rude towards her family when I'm trying to make her smile and tonight she broke up with me.
Recently it has been decided that I am to move foster homes as it is not working anymore and I'm not bored about leaving the family behind, I'm bothered about leaving my friends behind, they are the only people that get me and I don't want to leave Eloise behind either as my heart feels so connected to her still as we are still close friends. I cannot bring myself to leave all of this behind and I leave in a week.
Does anyone know what to do or has anyone gone through any similar situations and could give me some advice that would help me mentally as I feel like trash. I'm also a cutter so I may have to resort back to that if I'm not feeling better, I felt like I needed to get this out.
Thank you for reading this, if you read this all thank you. And if you can give any advice on how to cope through this then that would be very much appreciated thank you.
