Black screen except for camera? J7 Crown. no USB debugging. Recovery mode access - Samsung Galaxy J7 Questions & Answers

Situation: Samsung Galaxy J7 Crown. Never messed with. USB Debugging not enabled No special permissions (no ADB). I am able to access the Android Recovery screen. Obviously wipe cache partition didn't help, nor Lacking storage booting. Other than the Recovery and download screen: I get the Power/Restart icons when booted normally. Reset works, but power doesn't turn the phone off. No phone calls, Yes notifications. Camera from lock screen comes on (triple click on home button) and touch screen works.
I've tried to trace out the lock pattern in the hopes its still working outside this specific situation. No indication that it is.
All i want is a few sentimental pictures. Although after an entire day of frustration, finding out that the only thing that works is the camera is kinda funny and ironic.
Ive looked on XDA forums, but I'm having no luck w/ exact situation, although I'm sure someone has been in the same situation or similar enough.
Spent all day looking at options (Odin?) and nothing looks like it would work out for me.
Knowing the camera works, makes me hopeful that a mirror would work? No reaction to lock screen pattern makes me think not.
Additional (maybe irrelevant) info. Shows up on home WiFi while Find My Mobile said it was offline (makes sense with Notifications/no calls)
Any advice? Just point me in the right direction if there is one.
If not i hope you appreciate the Irony here. Thanks
(I used to be not so bad tech support, but haven't been keeping up as of late, and today was a painful reminder. Take pity on me.)

Black Screen Except Camera - Galaxy J7 Crown
Hey there anick22! I was so glad to see a search result with something referencing the camera working, on an otherwise completely black screen! I was super bummed to see that noone had replied to your plea for help with this insane problem!! I hope you found a solution by now!!
My 2 month old Galaxy J7 Crown suddenly went black on me one day, and it didn't happen as a result of a drop, or spill, or any other damage. I don't recall having put any new or different apps on it, recently, either.
The triple click of the Home button does open the camera, and the screen lights right up, perfectly. It takes it's usual beautiful pics, and I'm able to use all of the camera functions. I'm even able to view any photos I took during that particular session, buy not any prior pics, because I'm unable to unlock the phone.
"Hey Google!!" also reacts, and will display the result of any question that I may ask it, but I'm unable to go into the answers, without the ability to unlock my phone.
I have been able to get the phone into safe mode, while attempting to power it off, by pressing the power button, and then tapping on "power off" (although this hasn't worked every time I've tried). While in safe mode, "safe mode" is displayed in the bottom left hand corner, but nothing else appears on the screen.
Upon powering up the phone, all of the normal things happen. It shows "Samsung" and goes on to the blue screen to show the "Trac Fone" logo, but once the phone is booted up, the screen is black!!
PLEASE tell me that you were able to find a solution to this!!! I went and purchased a new Moto G7, (since I had a Droid Turbo 2 in the past, and it was amazing!!), and I'm beyond ready to get back to my J7 Crown!! PLEASE HELP!!
Thanks so much!!!
By the way, I'm a newbie here, as If you couldn't tell!!

[Q] Galaxy Nexus Boot Loop (stock)

I have an unlocked HSPA+ Galaxy Nexus imported from the UK to the US. Ordered from Negri Electronics.
It's not rooted or modded in any way.. Mainly because I don't know how to. As far as I know, it's running stock ICS.
I was using it normally, (using the fb messenger app if it makes any difference) when it suddenly rebooted by itself. The Google logo comes up, then the start up animation, and sometimes the home screen will appear but is not touch sensitive (i cannot slide it to unlock), and then it 'hangs' and the screen goes black. Repeat.
I've tried to fix this by myself and there's a video on youtube (sorry, noob here. can't post links. video is by robbidwv and title is "my galaxy nexus won't boot..") of the same problem that I have, but the posted solution doesn't work for me.
So far, I have entered Coin Mode and pressed Start. Entered Fastboot mode and gone into Recovery Mode (no options appear after that. it just starts booting up and the loop begins), and I've also tried Restart Bootloader.
I've almost given up. Now all I want is to extract my SMS, if they're still on my phone. I can't access the folders on my computer because it won't boot up and connect. Is there a way that I can extract my SMS by using DOS in either Coin Mode or Fastboot mode?
Or even better, does anyone have a solution to this boot loop problem? I'll contact Negri Electronics tomorrow and hopefully they can send me a replacement.
Please help!! Thanks
that problem just started happening with me an hour ago!!
i hate this!!
we need a solution please!
Hey guys, sorry about the issue.the major problem I see here is you wanting to retrieve your txt messages, which might be possible with a little Modding, but if yourwilling to lose them to get a working phone back, then this is what your going to have to do. Make sure your phone is completely off. Hold the 2 volume buttons and the power button together. You will get into a mode with an android Guy. Press the volume button up or down until it says reboot recovery at the top. Press the power button. It will rebootand come to a screen with an android. Hold volume up,down and power at the same time. A menu will come up. Go down to wipe data. Click it, and after it is done reboot. Your phone should work now.
If this helped you, or you simply appreciate me taking the time to write this out then please press the thanks button
Hey!
Thanks. Yeah I 'fixed' it already. I was just about to post something similar. After a while I just gave up on trying to recover my data. Good thing that Google syncs everything so the only issue would be recovering my messages, which I decided weren't worth sending it in for a repair which would probably not be able to recover anything anyway.
The thing I didn't know about was to press power + volume up WHILE on the recovery screen. I thought navigating to the recovery screen was it!
Still, this kind of sucks. I love my GNex, but I can't help but be slightly pissed seeing that my crappy iPhone 3GS never did this in the 2 years I had it. Oh well, hope it doesn't happen again!
hey guys! i also did a complete wipe on my phone and got it working again!
but i wonder why this happened in the first place?
last application i installed before the crash was double twist, i dunno why but i feel that it was the reason behind the boot loop!
Sorry for reviving this thread, but I just had this happen to me TWICE!
It happened to me first last Monday, the 23rd - the phone crashed when trying to send an email with an attachment - and went into a boot loop - Google logo would appear, no make it to the animation, and reboot....
I performed a full reset and things worked again. I didn't install all the apps I had before - figuring it must have been due to some app messing with the OS.
Well, it happened again to me yesterday! I was connecting to my bluetooth headset when the phone crashed and went into the boot loop. Full reset worked again, and I've installed even fewer apps - essentially only those that I use on a daily basis.
My phone is still on 4.0.1 and I'm hoping once 4.0.4 is pushed this may get resolved? I have a canadian GNex from Negri. I will call them again (I called the first time, but when the full reset worked I never contacted them again).
I would like to this this is a software issues, and not hardware.
I have the same problem. If you figure it out let me know.
Today my phone also entered a boot loop: [Google logo]->[black screen]->[vibration]->[Repeat]
I tried Recovery Mode, but this is what happens: (sorry for the link but I am not trusted with powerful tools such as outside links apparently, as I have not yet reached the maturity of a person with eight posts... )
dl(dot)dropbox(dot)com/u/53568097/Android.jpg
This is what I see when I navigate to Recovery Mode
For a split second I can see an image of an Android with spinning cogs in his innards, but then this little sad fellow appears. WTF is this?
EDIT:
Oh, and I'm running Android stock 4.0.2, never rooted or unlocked, Swedish. At the time when the phone started doing this, I was using Endomondo, and was about to set off on my bike when it died on me.
Stock ROM galaxy nexus bootlooping after wiping data also.
Hi,
My GNex went into a bootloop so i searched xda and found that factory reseting would be helping my prob. But after wiping the data also its still in going through the loop . Please help .:crying:

Black Screen Of Death

Hi all
Just wondered if anyone else has had a BSOD?
Brand new out the box, my Z5 connected and Google instantly downloaded my apps and contacts associated with my account from previous phone (Sammy Galaxy S4). This was OK, but it took a while and was about 70 apps. I rebooted after it was all done, of course, but occasionally I get this damn Black screen where everything is unresponsive (can't upload screenshot yet)
The only way to wake the phone up from this dark coma is to either reboot or switch user to guest then switch back again. Nothing else seems to work. Its probably one little app incompatibility but don't know how I'm going to find it except uninstalling 1 app at a time and testing the phone to see if it reoccurs. Could take ages to figure out.
Anyone suffering from this?
YES
Finally! Someone who seemingly has the same issue as I do!
It seems to happen most often when I hit the home button from snapchat, or some other camera app, but not always. Other details about my issue:
Screen goes black, but is clearly on. Status bar can still be dragged down, notifications can be pressed but do not respond. They can be dismissed.
Home screen, back, and recent apps buttons still respond, but do not do anything EXCEPT once in a while I can get it to go to just my background... no apps, icons, or anything else. At this point, the recent apps button disappears.
Prior to getting the black screen, my phone will not lock. It will turn off the screen when I press the power button, but when I press it again it is already unlocked.
Not sure what's up, or what I can do! Rebooting the phone helps for a little while, but I get it usually once or twice a day. It seems like it happens more on weekends, but that could just be confirmation bias since I used it more.
:crying:
Hmmm...
for me it doesn't seem to be triggered by anything - it just happens. (I don't have snapchat installed)
I've uploaded the screenshot as my profile image, so you can see the back triangle is the only thing that is not blacked out, that and the very top (battery/clock,signal, etc). If I tap the screen bottom right where the square is instead of seeing a list of recent apps the screen will flicker as if the list is scrolling up the screen but it all stays dark. I'm thinking of factory reset then reinstall everything. A PIA but as I have unlimited data it's no biggy.
Thanks for replying, Vargasm, and good luck with solving it. If you find anything out post back!
I have the same issue on my Z5 premium. There is no solution except reboot it. T^T
i have the same problem here. Phone is only a week old and totally stock. Have heard it may be due to a screen protector if you use one. I am loathe to remove mine though.

Replaced screen, not booting

Hey guys,
just replaced my screen by myself and it isn't working. It boots and the screen lights up for a few seconds but thats it. So it seems like I ****ed up somewhere. :/
Now I've got some questions for you guys.
1. What could cause this error? Since it's already not working I don't mind taking it apart some more and trying to fix it.
2. Do you think if I send it to the support from OnePlus they will take a look at it?
3. The whole reason I did this was to get my data back. Is there any way to access the data on the phone without the touchscreen? I encrypted it using CynogenMod. USB-Debugging is enabled.
Thank you so much guys, I'd really appreciate some help. This **** is really tearing me down since it was a lot of work.
I did this on my own phone but Idk about OPO. If you use the power+voldown method to boot into recovery (yes ik nothing on screen) then connect a usb and see what happens
If you power it on, wait 5 mins then call it and if the phone rings you should be able to rule out the display and speakers and storage, obvs if the display is still not on at this point it is probably the display.
you can also adb from recovery and or fastboot so you should be able to see it in there if it is still working (make sure you change the phone for a decent amount of hours before you do any of these) If the display is dead its likely its been on for the last day and dead
Sorry for the late answer, really appreciate your help!
So if I connect the phone to the PC (tried it in recovery and in normal mode) windows detects the phone under "Devices" but sadly if I type in "adb devices" in cmd it doesn't detect the device.
But still, windows is detecting the phone so it seems to still function. I booted into recovery and I could use the touscreen and the lower buttons. I couldn't see anything but it was vibrating whenever I was using the touscreen. So it seems like only the display part is broken.
Can't call the phone since it's fully encrypted so I need to type in a password before booting anything (recovery, normal mode, ...)
I'll try to contact the vendor of the display and see what he has to say.
If anyone got any more tips I'd appreciate them. I'm a pretty big noob so I even appreciate "common sense" tips.
I know this may be a "common sense" thing to say, but double check your connections. Sometimes the connectors aren't made properly and a pin could be covered so you can try connecting and disconnecting several times to see if it clears up.
Since the touch screen was registering and vibrating, then it could be the backlight that's broken. Try holding a flashlight at an angle and see if you can make out anything on screen. If it's the backlight, then you can probably back up your data in case your phone does end up breaking.
reconnected everything multiple times and also tried the flashlight trick. sadly with both no luck
but something good:
adb recognizes my phone in "recovery"
bad news: no commands work, most likely because the phone is encrypted. if I enter a command nothing happens, it looks like its loading forever.
any ideas?
Hey!
I also had the same problem after I replaced OPO's screen about one year ago. The replacement screen was from ebay.
I could see the Cyanogen logo but after a few seconds the screen became black. Booting into recovery mode worked well.
On the video also ROM boots well but the screen stays black.

Eventually, the screen was defective and I returned it and bought new one.

Galaxy S8+ black screen?

Hey there,
I have got a Samsung Galaxy S8+,SM-G955N.
Some days before,my phone was stolen by a thief, then I asked for the police for help. The police found the phone for me in the end.
I was so happy at first for my phone was survived. But then I found my phone's screen is always black. When I connect my phone with the wireless charger and charger,I can hear the sound of connecting the power, and I can hear the notification sound, when someone calls me,I can hear the ring! And "hi,bixby"also works!I wonder why?!
I have rebooted so many times, and tried to reboot the phone to recovery mode and download mode.I ended up with failure.
(My phone has been flashed a custom ROM and TWRP.My phone has a lock screen password and lock screen protect which means you can't reboot and power off.)
I really don't know what the thief had done......But my phone wasn't fall off from high places I can be sure......For the phone has a perfect body.)
Then I tried many times to reboot one day the screen recovered! But I found that the screen is not stable, which means it has many bars,it will disappear and then appears at another zone.Just like the old TV set.
I want to wipe /data,then I rebooted to recovery mode.But.:crying:the screen then do not working...... Just like before.
Then I tried many times,I entered the recovery mode. The screen works in the end,but the colours seems very strange,a little purple.and the touch screen don't work at all.I used the mouse to swith the brightness in TWRP,but when I turn the brightness to over 80% or lower than 40%,the screen looks dark.I can hardly see the contents.
So I want to ask you all for help,is this a hardware or a software issue? How can I solve it?
Thank you all and I love you all!!!!!!!!!:crying:
I am a student......And I am so poor.....
Thank you all again!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm hoping you have warranty. Seems like you have done a thorough job at trying to problem solve. I'd head to a repair place for a quick confirmation and maybe repair.
seems like a broken/damaged flex in the screen

Major issue with ZTE Blade 10: Screen refuses to stay off

I've gotten no help from ZTE themselves - they want me to do a factory reset and didn't even bother to read what my problem is. This is with the stock ROM for a ZTE Blade 10. I touch the power button and the screen doesn't stay off, instead turning on every time I move it (in the same vein as a "Lift to Wake" problem). This burned a huge hole in my battery the first day I had it, butt dialed a couple of people by opening my Contacts on its own, swiped important notifications away (including texts and reminders), and played with apps. I've managed to stabilize it some by tweaking some settings, but I haven't found a setting that disables this entirely.
I have screenshots of my settings in a second post, since I'm not allowed to post them in the original post.
Worth noting is that I have a custom lockscreen app, HiLocker, for which I set a five-second timeout. It does not seem to be the app, since the problem still presents itself when I disable it. Ergo, I either have to choose between changing that to instantly locking (thus making me enter my pattern again when my screen times out, even if I'm in the middle of using the phone) or keeping as is and dealing with this problem. I don't want this to be a choice. I want this five-second thing, but I want the power button to be absolute and keep the screen off until I push it again. My phone doesn't seem to understand something so basic: That's what the power button is for.
Does anyone know if there's a solution for this? Any pointers would be appreciated, thanks!
I hope this works.

Bump. Seems I can do that every 24 hours, and it's on the bottom of the page, so...
Still seeking any feedback. Anyone have any idea, or do I need to flash a ROM for the first time in half a decade?
One last try... can anyone help me?
