Is there a way to stop Android from closing apps? - HTC U11 Questions & Answers

I have a game on my phone and it used to stay open after I switched to other apps and back. Now, if I switch to a different app like a browser or something and then switch back, I have to restart the game more often than not. It's super annoying. It does it even if I have only one other app open that I'm switching to. I know it didn't happen this frequently on Nougat. Is there a way to make it so it keeps the game open as I look through other apps?

Have you checked to see if you are optimizing the app? This might help...?
Settings/battery/battery optimization.
This is how I get there on my phone.

I fixed it by downgrading from Oreo to Nougat 7.1.1. Now it isn't nearly as bad. I don't know if it's just HTC or what, but their late updates just seem to suck. I really don't have any desire to try Pie on this phone.

How to keep Apps running in the Background?

Hi everyone, ever since the update, my apps stop running in the background when I close the app. Example: I don't get Whatsapp notifications anymore unless I open the app and keep it open. If I close all open apps, I will no longer receive any of the notifications for any of them.
I went into the battery settings disabled battery saver mode but that didn't do anything.
I would appreciate any help you could provide.

It's apparently one of the issues with the latest OTA update, where closing all running apps will terminate the background processes associated with the apps closed. Prior to the update and the Close All button being added to the recent apps list, I don't think it had this problem (I don't use Whatsapp, but my Skype and Discord notifications still come through even if I don't have them on my recent apps list).
This is a little frustrating. Noticed that I wasn't getting any notifications from tasker, pushover, textra, hangouts, inbox and etc.
Also noticed that pushover will not update unless it is off of wifi. All my other devices receive notifications on this wifi. IE nothing blocked.
I have had to open all the programs that I want to receive notifications from, open. Not the best work around.

I noticed that on occasion there will be small text under the new button that says "long press to set up apps that could run in the background" I do it but it doesn't seem to do anything, maybe free up some of the RAM but that's about it. I'm wondering if there is a bug and if it's supposed to show something.
Has anyone else tried the long press?
As of now all I do is keep a folder on the desktop labeled background apps. It helps big time when I accidentally tap the close all button. But my solution as of now is to keep things open that don't seem to work in the background. I've been experimenting with what works and it seems like in some recent app updates they begin to work without being open. I know for sure that facebook and now facebook messenger work without being open, as well as some google services. I have a memory clearer app that I use when I'm not using my phone so it clears whatever it can without killing the apps. But that's what I have as of now, trial and error to figure out what I need to leave open and what I can close. And I strongly recommend the folder, I have had many times where I accidentally close everything and forget what I had to leave open.
It's a bummer though, I just bought the phone and then this update came out. Kinda kills the excitement of getting a new awesome phone if I have to deal with this frustration :/ Other than that, it's definately a nice step up from a Samsung S4.

Misbehave as in not show anything after a long press?
Yes, nothing happens anytime I try it. After reboot, the first time I pull up the running apps is when I get the prompt. After the first long press after a reboot, the prompt is gone. If I have an app open and then I do the long press, I am taken back to the desktop, but no matter what I try, nothing seems to happen after the long press other than being taken back to the desktop if I had an app open.
I have the same issue, I thought it was a Internet connection issue (see my thread) but after digging deeper realised my background apps werent running after closing them and the long press option does nothing.
I have the same problem. Any solution?

I've just installed the new update and it looks like the issues I had with background apps closing when clearing all apps has been fixed. I've got no apps running in the foreground yet can see Whatsapp, Fitbit, etc still running and I'm receiving notifications for them.

can i make certain apps force my screen to stay awake?

It's been a while since I owned a Android and I just moved over to honor 8 from an iPhone.
On my iPhone certain apps forced the screen to stay awake, mostly gps apps and also pokemon go which my gf plays all the time on my phone.
Pokemon go also uses the gps so I'm guessing it's all related to the gps or video since that's another situation where the screen stays awake longer.
So, is this possible on Android and on honor 8?
Changing the autolock is not what I'm looking for since that changes it in all apps and outside of apps.
Thnx
Take a Look an Tasker-App.
Maybe it will give you the solution.

You talking about the app called 'tasker' from 'crafty apps eu' in the play store that's about $3?
EDIT: Ok, it took me a while to get it sorted and to figure out why it stopped working all the time (it was the battery saving process that kept killing it's permissions)
But now it's working like a charm.
Thank you so much, I never even knew this app existed. I haven't fully figured it out yet but I can see huge potential in it.
Every Android user should definitely have it installed.
This is a bit off-topic, but do you know any other extremely useful apps like this?
Thnx again.

Switching to another app/Going to home menu causes a certain app to restart.

Hi,
Had this issue for a little while since after upgrading to Android N on my S7.
Prior to that, I could go to the home menu while Kingdom Hearts Union X is active or switch to another app, resume and the KH app would resume where it was.
Now it seems to start the app very briefly, then shuts down and requires a fresh boot of the app again.
Other apps I regularly use don't seem to have this problem, and I haven't seen any others complain about this issue for KH in particular, but I don't know what could be the cause on my phone?
I did try Greenify and S7 has some inbuilt thing to clear RAM and etc., but the same still seems to happen.
Anyone have any suggestions?
P.S. Also out of interest, I've read keeping all apps open on the multi-app screen is better practice than manually closing them? Is this true? And would they use internet data/resources in this state?
Thanks

Pie update problem

Hi all, I'm a very unhappy bunny right now, bought the P20 last year on Vodafone UK. All was fab, loved it. I received an OTA pie update and now many of my apps aggressively closer in the background if they're off focus. Particularity hard for browser pages with a login. The app reloads and I have to log in, again, and again. It has rendered it effectively unable to multi task. (Much like me really). Even as I type this I'm afraid of losing the screen as I received WhatsApp messages. What am I doing wrong? It must be met since I can find no other instances of my problem anywhere.
Cheers
Mark
Anyone able to offer any advice here?
have the same problem. Multitasking on 8.1 worked like a charm, now with pie it sometimes closes my Spotify even if there are 2gigs of ram available
Same problem here, haven't found any solution to this problem yet
I changed the App-Starts to manuell and back to automatic and it seams to work for now...
That's simple. You can control your app activity simply by using Battery Optimizer and set permissions from automatic to manual. Also in System Settings type "ignore battery optimization" you will see a list of apps that are allowed to be ignored while the phone falls asleep or being optimized and you can add more apps if you need to and allow them to be ignored.

Might be a bug, needs to check. I'm still waiting for EMUI9 on my device.

I'm think about rolling back to 8.1
Rolled back to 8.1 everythings fine now. Hopefully Huawei will fix this problem with pie
Well to tell you the truth guys I just have received an update to EMUI 9 and I don't face any issues at all, I have apps which I need to be running in the background and as I stated before I just moved the badges in App launch section from Automatic to Manual and it's all ok as on EMUI 8.

Screen goes black, buttons don't respond, can get calls from other phones to me

Hi all, I have been facing a really weird problem for the past few weeks. Sometimes all of a sudden, my phone screen completely turns black, and the buttons (as well as the alert slider) stop responding. There is no indication whatsoever that it is NOT switched off. However when I try calling it from another phone, ring can be heard as if my phone is working fine. I don't understand where the problem lies. Any suggestions are welcome.
I am rooted with Magisk 19.3, Riru-EdXposed 0.4.5.1 Sandhook, Riru-Core v19.5.
Edit: Android Pie. OOS 9.5.10.GM21AA
I had this problem recently when accessing certain apks. Reflashing the firmware sorted it for me.
no root same problem to me after I update from Android 9 to Android 10

Thanks I will try doing that.
Same problem here when opening quite a few apps. Issue didn't start until I updated to Android 10 (and rooted), on a converted T-Mobile variant. Wonder if that is the source of our problem. I'm sorely tempted to use the MSM tool and go back on TMO's Android 9 (and pray for a official update to 10). Unless someone can find a solution to this, rebooting the phone every time I want to open certain apps is a real pain.

It definitely is a A10 issue as I too have started to have this issue when opening games and ram extensive apps. A workaround is to open the game or app in split screen mode and once the app has started you can switch back to fullscreen mode or start the app from recents. That has worked for me 100% of the time. The 10.0.1 update seemed to make it worse because you have to reboot the phone to escape the black screen were as at first you could use gestures to escape the app.

Good idea using split screen, I'll have to start doing that for the time being. I moved over to Open Beta 3 and the issue is still there and worst as with 10.0.1. Hopefully OnePlus can nail this bug soon. It's turning a otherwise amazing phone into a headache.
I have the same problem. Running 10.0 rooted. For me, this has only happened when opening Youtube Vanced. One clever solution is to enable "Quickly turn on camera" and doublepress power if this happens. This launches camera and returns the screen to normal.

Experiencing this too, it does seem to be related to certain .apks, how bizarre is that? Really don't want to re-flash as I am encrypted... Can you dirty-flash with an encrypted system and not loose any data?

I reflashed through TWRP and all data was fine. I'm encrypted too.
But it goes without saying, make sure you do a backup before flashing anything
