Google pay not working after OTA update - Huawei P20 Questions & Answers

Afternoon all,
I have an EML-L09 P20, which did an OTA update to 9.1.0.311 overnight yesterday. Since then, Google pay wouldn't work contactlessly. I tried removing the card and re-adding it, but I get an error saying that the phone is "This phone can't be used to pay in shops. This may be because it is rooted or altered in some way", so I cannot use contactless features. I also tried clearing data on the app and get the same error.
Can anyone shed any light on this - is it a build error, or Google Pay?
If no one comes up with a cunning plan for me, I'm going to try a factory reset in a bit, when it's got a little more battery
Edit: Ok, did the factory reset.... And still the same. So, I called Huawei, who say that they have had a number of calls about this. They blame Google - saying that gpay needs an update. I then called Google Pay customer services, which was like talking to a brick wall!
Has anyone else seen this behaviour on this version? Even if you have experienced it working or not with this specific factory rom version, please could you comment - So I'll know if it's really a big problem, or just me.
Ta,
Mike

Well my version is L29 for now I haven't noticed issues. But my friend who has OnePlus 5T says his Gpay stopped working after an update too. So I suppose it is Google issue maybe it is related to older versions of ROM somehow or etc..

I'm on the latest firmware and running NuSenseSIXv2.0 (4.4.3 based). Softcard works as expected after setting up the Rootcloak Xposed module.

Same here. I used to use Google Wallet before the update on CVS once in a while. However after the update I'm not able to use it anymore.
Not rooted, running stock Android 4.4.3. OTA Verizon Updated.
I am resetting my phone now and will try soon when I get another chance. Anyway, how did it go for you? is yours working now? I do not have insurance, just ran out two days ago when I did a plan change. Sucks big time now that I have to get to know that it doesn't work. Also, just to be sure I tried ISIS/Softcard Wallet as well to see if it is the Google Wallet itself is blocked or handicapped for some reason. But to my surprise, ISIS/Softcard does not work as well. I am doubting the hardware now. Or this is a solid 4.4.3 Update bug that is causing our device to not function as normal. Question is, is Verizon aware of this? How do we report this to Verizon?
According to what I see here, only few have been affected it seems? or is it so?
I am left with many more questions than answers ever since the update.
P.S - After the update my phone isn't as smooth as it was before either. Feels like the I am experiencing choppy frame rates often times. But not to the level that I will fault the phone.
Please help. Let me know what worked for you and what didn't.

Hope you get your issue figured out.
Thanks for your response,

Thanks for the response, Honestly, anything and everything helps. Since you have a Verizon M8, assuming from your signature, I guess I am in the minority or rare bunch who's device is affected. I am glad to know that your device is functioning as normal.
I do not have insurance at the moment. And I am sad to learn that I have to send my device to HTC for repairs. Which takes about 10-14 days without phone.
Does Verizon do loaner phones?

You should be covered under verizons one year manufacturer warranty go in to a verizon corporate store they will probably overnight you another m8, and from what most assume usually they seem to always send a new m8 because they are really hard to disassemble so many thing they replace with new. I know many people that got an m8 replaced through asuron the verizon and at&t insurance and everyone says they got a new one because you can go into the settings and they dont show reconditioned and usually show a build date within a couple months of when they receive them.
I say take it to a verizon owned corporate store steer clear of verizon dealers a corporate store can do more for you like overnight you a replacement.
Bit the bullet and called HTC.

Bit the bullet and called HTC. Found out there is another program that they send out a device in advance, overnight that is along with a mailer envelope to return our old unit. But it seems they put a hold on your card for 599 and also a 29 one time fee for this to happen. I am thinking if it is worth going this route. At least this will solve my problem of being without a phone.
But before I do that, I have made sure the HTC Rep to record our coversation and give me time to call back, so that I can test it out one more time.
( Did I tell you some HTC reps are dumb? The first one I talked to, the girl was so stupid that she did not know what is NFC and asked me to explain what it is, and how to use it. Asked me to pause, stopped me numerous times and made me repeat what was not working. After all that, she still did not get it. Hung up the phone on me and left, and did not bother to call me on my backup callback number. Lol. )

Just went to CVS and tried my Google Wallet. Wholla, it worked. So the second reset seemed to have fixed the problem. Or did it? I am not sure, only time will tell. I will keep on trying once in a while to be sure that it is not just a fluke.
Here is what I did.
The HTC rep (the second one that is, first one was dumb and rude due to her limited understanding) asked me to reset the phone once more, and when the phone booted up, I unchecked the Settings > Power > Fastboot option. Disabled Softcard/ISIS Wallet in App settings, Installed Google Wallet again. And all seems to be in order now. Not sure what caused the initial trouble.
I will be on the look and report if the trouble comes back again.
Thanks for the suggestions and feedback guys.

So as my previous post suggested, after a hard reset and disabling the Softcard/ISIS app, and having Google Wallet as the exclusive app, the tap and pay worked at the CVS. However, when I tried again last night, it is no longer working and not registering the tap anymore at the terminal.
I am confused. Is it the hardware? Should I go ahead with the replacement device from HTC? or Should I just blame the software and keep the phone as is. Although my contacts and account is backed up in Google accounts, I still think its a hassle reinstalling 50+ apps, and restoring the phone to its fully functional day to day state that suited me. I just do not like the hassle of swapping phones.
Any last suggestions guys? Or hardware swap is my only way?

Update - Got rid of the HTC One M8, swapped for a Galaxy S5 on craigslist and guess what, Google wallet works fine there. Yes, although that is a Verizon phone as well, grass is definitely greener on that side. I do not like the menu system and UI, color etc, but what it supposed to do, it does without any issues. Yes I miss the aluminum body and the build, also the sense 6, but the ease of use with fingerprint sensor and the vibrancy of amoled screen picks up the slack. Wish HTC can use Amoled screens as well.
I was able to use google wallet no problem after the 4.4.3 update at CVS this is however before CVS disabled their NFC payment system.
Stock Rooted.
I was able to use it just fine at Walgreens this morning.
Never had a problem with it 4.4.3 or 4.4.4

Noob root now slightly bricked G Flex 2

Hi all. My new phone was going greatish. It was a little laggy, so thought I would root it and remove some of the preinstalled junk. All went fine no problem.
I removed some of the vodafone (UK) stuff, and all was well. Some time later though, I get a message:
"Unfortunately, the process com.android.phone has stopped"
And now my phone won't find the network and message pops up every couple of seconds. I tried a factory reset, but I suspect this made it worse as I have now lost my backups from Titanium app. The phone is basically unusable as it is due to constant error message and no network.
I have tried to access the recovery menu, but i get an empty robot with "no command".
I have seen some mention of CIDs on other forums but haven't got a clue how to go about fixing it or even where to start.
Any help would be greatly appreciated as obviously the phone is absolutely brand new, and I'm very very upset about the whole thing! Not to mention the fact that I feel like an idiot!
Anyway, thanks in advance.
You deleted something that was not suppose to be deleted. Don't the stock tot file on this forum and follow the steps to Flash back to factory
http://forum.xda-developers.com/g-flex2/general/guide-lg-g-flex-2-stock-firmware-to-t3037593 follow the video and you should be up in running in no time . make sure this link support your version not sure which g flex2 Version you have.
Still no tot files available for the LG G Flex 2 (any variant). Sorry got to wait for some to become available.
Thanks for the input. I figured it would be something like that. Any idea when the files might be available? I don't mind being a guinea pig at this stage. My phone is LG H955 on Vodafone UK.
I am going to try and play dumb in Vodafone shop today and see if they'll replace it there and then (doubtful).
I suppose my other alternative is to return it to LG for Firmware Flash. Anyone know if this is possible and potential cost?
Strangely, I'm not so bothered about (temporarily) destroying my brand new phone too much, it's my sudden lack of connectivity that hurts the most.
Thanks guys
Further update; I have spoken to LG tech support / repair department, and I told them the phone had been rooted etc. (I didn't leave any identifying details!) They informed me that as the phone was now out of warranty, I should speak to their service partner SBE.
After calling SBE, they informed me that LG or their partner have no obligation to fix rooted phones, so apparently they just won't do it, even though I'm certain they could, which kind of sucks, as I was obviously willing to pay.
So it looks like I'm waiting for the TOT files. I hope they come along soon!
Lesson well and truly learned!

Stay positive. Hopefully those tot files come soon. I on the other hand what to experiment with my phone but need a tot file just in case I mess anything up.
If it's just your dialer that's acting up, have you tried a third party dialer to make phone calls?

Lets see if we can work on this.
Is it working ok, just not picking up the network?
How long exactly have you had it?
If you put what you all deleted meaning what folders they were in i could make a copy of that folder or apps you deleted and upload them on dropbox for you that might help get you going worth a shot
Be better if someone had the same variant as you i have the Sprint model.
Thanks again for input. I have hopefully managed to sort this with my provider. I was just within the 14 day cancellation period, so I have arranged for a brand new handset. I know its a little bit naughty but if the phone wasnt so laggy to begin with, I would never have rooted it.
I'm guessing it makes no difference to them as the phone will go back to lg for wipe and reflash as a matter of course once returned.
Thanks folks, I will remain on this forum and hopefully not do anything quite so stupid again!
Unfortunately this is my last day with this device . Great phone but i was wrong the 810 processor is dangerously hot to the point it felt like my pockets were on fire. This my second g flex2 and I'm moving on to something more reliable. Love this phone but this heat issue i can't risk. After 14 days i would be stuck with this phone and i can't take the risk of hoping of getting a device that function fine bye everyone.
:victory::victory::victory:
Today, I've gotten myself in a similar pickle after applying noob root.. Data OK but no phonecalls and no txts. When I tried to make a call, the thing said the phone is not activated. Sprint tech supp was of course no help, so after some digging I found this: ##72786#
Factory reset, keep the data (and all apps).
That solved it.
I guess I'm old enough to know that being lazy doesn't pay.

so you had root, and while doing this factory reset you were able to go back to full stock unrooted rom? if so, were you able to install updates? i too have a sprint version and i was rooted and tried installing an update but failed, i then unrooted my phone tried the update again and still got an error. im just wondering if this method would actually help people who have the same problem as i do.

Unfortunately, that wasn't the case.
I tried every possible way to install this damn update. Rooted, unrooted, factory reset 4 times, tried to install from the system update in settings, from recovery (which is, at least for me, very tricky to get into) all efforts errored out.
I posted a link to the update.zip in other thread.
So then I gave up and used this noob root which killed voice calls and text.
This code I posted says it does a factory reset but is resetting something else than other factory resets because almost all my settings, passwords and all apps remained intact.. Then I used the original root method and everything works like it's supposed to.
I guess we'll have to wait until someone finally starts developing for our phone.
So after a few days I just received a notification for the update for the third time. Any suggestions as to how I should proceed? I've tried it while being rooted and failed, also tried it the second time after unrooting and failed too. Also, what is the default location where the update is downloaded to, so I can back it up.
So far nothing has worked. The update should be in the cache folder. There is also a link to download the update that someone posted in another thread here about the update.
FYI - I forced the update through recovery over root and bricked my phone. Like all the way bricked. I can get to recovery and download mode, but no fastboot even. Luckily I was within my 14 days and there is no way to tell it is rooted... because it doesn't even get that far, so I got a replacement. My sincere advice would be to wait to root until we have custom recovery and stock firmware available, and if you have root now, wait to update until a dev can release a "root safe" version.
I'm not an expert but I'm not new either. I got the original Evo on launch day and have done all kinds of dumb stuff to every phone since. This is the first time I haven't been able to recover it.

=( *hug. That sucks man, thankfully you were able to get it replaced. *pfew I dodged a bullet there. I was actually thinking about doing the same thing getting home from work. Yeah its best we don't mess with the phone any longer those that have root at the moment. Until custom recovery and stock rom is out like he says.
Wow. How did you manage to "force" the update through recovery? I tried it through recovery but it would error out. (Error 7)
I will tell you, as a cautionary tale.
The error when you flash from recovery references a specific file that is incompatible with the update. I used root explorer to investigate further and found that the root script had overwritten a system file. The original was saved as "original" so I deleted the file causing the error and renamed the original one. After that, the update went through and I thought I was golden... Only now nothing else works.

Fully stock, flashed 6.0, Android Pay not functioning?

My N5 has an unlocked bootloader but that's it. I was running a fully stock, OTA compatible 5.1.1 prior to flashing the factory 6.0 image using fastboot this afternoon.
That all went well but I tried to setup Android Pay just now and after I add my card and agree to the terms and conditions, I'm presented with the attached screenshot.
Any idea what's up? I've already killed and cleared the data on the Android Pay app and I get the same thing.
When that happened to me, I was rooted, but if you are not rooted then I am Not sure. Those who are rooted simply need to unroot authorize and then reroot
Just bumping to see if anyone else has this issue. I re-installed the app and i'm still getting the same thing.

But does it actually work at checkout? I've seen reports that it doesn't. Maybe if you disable superuser and then checkout?
I'm afraid I don't know the answer to that. I haven't tried to pay for anything using that yet. However, I have heard reports of bad behavior from the application from people who are completely stock
I'm getting the same thing. I was able to add cards that had already been set up in my google wallet, but now if I try to add a new cards I get the "unable to verify" BS. I cannot use the already added cards to make a payment either. It gives me a message about card XXX cannot be used at this time. I'm pretty pissed, I used google wallet quite a bit, now I can't use wallet, and google pay effing sucks.

Looking for best option with my S7

Hey guys, So I purchased a S7 on ebay after clearing the IMEI through Verizon's Fraud Department. I then made sure the Imei matched the Original Phone Box, Receipt and back glass. All was well so I was happy with the purchase. It had a broken front screen and I went through the repair and fixed it!
Was really happy to save money by repairing an S7.
Only issue is what I have no learned to be FRP. She reset the phone before sending it to me which is completely understandable.
I've emailed her in ebay about it and she said she would get back to me with the gmail account but hasn't responded regarding giving me the password.
I fully understand and don't expect her to give me their password. That's a bit ridiculous of me to expect that. All I want is the clean clear phone I bought from her and be able to use it.
So A few things, Im not just here for this. I also want to get into rooting which is why I registered, I hope to be of help in the future as I learn more and more about getting those
terrible factory apps and stuff that comes from verizon.
1. Which is the best method about doing an FRP Bypass. I see people on ebay that will do it for like 20 bucks remotely over team view. Others send a usb drive.
2. I absolutely can provide proof of purchase through screen shots on ebay, as well as the item number to show you who bought it. (Same Username of course)
I totally understand frp is to prevent theft, which is great. It just sucks that the owner didn't know she was selling me her locked phone. Shes the original owner. She didn't have insurance so when she broke the screen she had to buy a new one and thats why she sold this one on ebay. She's been super helpful and nice
as we exchange emails on ebay. But short of driving 5 hrs each way to meet in person frp bypass is my only option. I gave her the option of me driving there, I would spend the time/gas to meet at her local verizon store so i dont have to do this mess.
I did attemp a frp bypass on albviral but I must have done it wrong, and it seemed a bit complicated. Again, I can provide proof that I did not steal this phone. Whatever I need to do to
not lose even more money from the purchase and repair.
If any help, I'd be super appreciated.
thanks
Well they changed their password because she couldn't remember it so I can only assume theres a 24hr lock out period or something. It wont log in. And even using a recovery email and her sending me the verify code it wont let us into the phone.
Update:
Lady changed their google password and it still wont log in. I tried clicking forgot and it sent a code to the recovery email which she logged in, got and sent me.
After I tried that it just kept kicking me back to the start of frp by saying "Log in using an account that was synced to this device" and taking me to a screen to put in the gmail.
When I try random passwords it says wrong password. But when I try the one she made today it just kicks back. 24hr period? I really hope that's all it is.
I even put in their names to confirm account and it kicks me back saying that isnt correct. She said he can't remember anything and has to get new passwords all the time much less knowing what was used when they orginally go the phone. So I guess i'll try in 24hrs and if not then I'll try someone on ebay? idk.
Flash an older firmware with ODIN that has an FRP bypass tutorial on YT
It's been done. Now I get a security notice that unauthorized changes have been detected, restart phone to undo.
Obviously im not going to do that but will it ever go away.
I'll shortly install sim card and activate phone. I appreciate the help.
Now for me to research rooting!
Wow this is terrible. The prev. owner called verizon tech support and had the phone cleared off her account but it still won't let us activate it. They said wait 24hrs and see if that takes care of
it and if not then the phone is useless. Doesnt even make sense that the original owner contacted them, cleared her and the phone and still may not be usable.
Alrighty, all is fixed and new sim card and im activated and everything. It wants to update to 7.0 but im hesitant to do it.
Updated to 7.0 nagout. All is well. There's an additional
System update that includes some security measures.
Since updating to 7.0 went smoothly I guess I'll go ahead with the additional system update.
Glad you got it working!
Thanks! This newest security system update has me a little worried but I guess I'd the 7.0 update went fine I shouldn't be worried about it. Having done the rep bypass just has me on edge even tho the original owner is great and told tech support it was hers to clear it and let me have it and all.
I still want to look into rooting, there's just a bunch of junk on here. Even games! I don't use it for games.

Dead G-Pay on Note 20 Ultra SM-N986B/DS

I can't get Google Pay to work on my device.
My bank says it's OK and the cards is activated for contactless in the app with no problem.
When I try and put the phone on a payment terminal nothing happens, no ping or beep, no error code or anything.
I just came from a Note 10+ and it was working flawless everytime.
Any idea?
Maybe your nfc is turned off?

It's on of course.
Never had any problems with S10 and Note10+.
My cards is activated for contactless in app and everything should work.
I have talked to Google, they couldn't find any error and said it should work, I also talked to Samsung they told me the same.
I have tried different cards, resetting Gpay and also Factory Reset my phone.
Problem is still there, nothing happens.
Also tried going to a store and sent a picture to a Oneplus 8 via Android Beam, that worked.
Can Android Beam work if there is a fault on the NFC chip (hardware error)?
I had the same problem and discovered that I hadn't designated default or favorite cards of the ones that I activated.
Edit: I can find tag on my credit card when tapping on my phone, so NFC should be OK.
But can not figure out why Gpay doesn't work.....
I have the same, and I think NFC is off for third party apps. Gpay does not work, nfc loyalty doesnt work, our local bank in Lithuania Swedbank app doesnt work too. Just no reaction when holding near the bank terminal. Hope that we will have a fix soon

Oh my... Do you have the exact same model as my?
I have talked to Google again and they can't find any issuses, so maybe you are right, the flaw is in the firmware.

What Network Provider you got?
Could be the payment terminal issue

Yes, I have done every terminal there is.
In Norway all terminals have to take NFC/tapp with card.
Some people say it's an issue with network provider settings downloaded first time you start phone.
If they factory reset phone and on the first boot use a different sim card from other network provider it works.
I got Telia. Maybe will try to reset with other provider Bitė
Ok, finally I did solve it.
0. I have removed two Sims (Telia was primary, Bitė second). Inserted only Bitė as primary
1. Factory reset
2. Deleted cache via recovery.
3. Again factory reset via recovery
4. Downloaded official baltic ROM from sammobile and flashed via odin with full reset
5. Configured phone, installed gpay, added cards
6. Inserted Telia sim as secondary
7. Everything is working (gpay, loyalty via nfc)
Dont know which step exactly was the one, but overal its working.

I am having the same problem, GPay seems to be OK (and was OK with Note10+ with the same cards) but does absolutely nothing when trying to pay in a store. No help from Google or Samsung, just generic answers/questions about NFC being on/off, case on or not, is the phone connected to the internet etc.
However, after exhausting amounts of googling, I found out that some people got it working on other phones by uninstalling Play Services updates. I did that and while I obviously had the latest version of GPay, the UI of the GPay app changed a bit to somewhat more "modern": no bottom bar and the QR/number based loyalty cards below the NFC payment cards. Did yours change too after your solution?
I can't try paying with it in while but it'd be a relief to know that I finally fixed it...
Hi,
Uninstalling play services update did not help. Gpay also looks the same as always. Tried different versions of play services , gpay but nothing. Those steps solved the problem, I think my operator did not send some configuration on first start and after full rom reinstall with other sim card everything went successfull
I had the same problem.
Uninstalled Gpay, and installed it again.
I thing my problem was because it were transfered from S20 with Smartswitch.
Tried flashing and starting fresh... still doesn't work. I give up, if it still doesn't work after next OTA I'll take the phone for service. Thanks for the tips though.
