EQ - ASUS ZenFone 6 (2019) Questions & Answers

I'm considering buying this phone, and I'd like to know about the sound equalizer. If someone could post screenshots of it I'd appreciate it!

I can't send screenshots because I can't actually buy this phone (yet) in the UK, but one of its attractions for me was that audio Wizard is built in. Imho, this was the best sound mod I've used on my previous phone, a op3t.

To be more specific I'd like to know what's the lowest frequency adjustable? On some phones it's 60hz which isn't good enough. Of course I can always root my phone and use Viper, but I'd prefer if I don't have to do it.

As you clearly see from that screenshot it is a 500Hz, so it is not good enough for you.

There's a single "z" at the bottom left of the eq, might be scrollable. Also I find it hard to believe 8khz is the highest

I am sorry. I never play with this equalizer, so I did now for you.
You are right, that panel is scrollable and there is a hidden low frequency 250Hz. But no higher than 8kHz.
But on the bottom of the screen there are two boosters for Bass and Treble (no frequency are mentioned here).

It's ok Seems odd! But as I said, if I'm not happy with the eq I can always root my phone.

You're wrong. There are 30 Hz-16 kHz adjustments

250hz, the first Line is Missing.
With headphones 31hz, sorry about that.

I haven't headphones by hand when I checked equalizer. Now it makes sense. Thank you.

running virtuous infinity... very low speakerphone volume

hi, i used to have a G2 running CM7, recently got a MT4GS (Doubleshot) and was using CM9 on it, but didn't like the camera app, i loved the stock sense camera app on the MT4GS, just don't want the bloatware. so after some googling, i have found VIRTUOUS INFINITY to fit my needs with a stockish feel, but sleeker/quicker.
only thing i've come across that keep this rom from being a homerun, is the speakerphone volume is really really low... is there a fix for this yet? i am running the latest beta with OTA updater.
also, when using instagram, the "blur" effect, causes artificats in the blurred area.
once again, only real gripe i have is the ridiculously low sound i get from speakerphone when on the phone... like literally, the headset speaker is louder then the speakerphone at full volume.
love the rom otherwise, camera works great, and i don't need 1080p recording, perfectly happy with 720p.
Hi! Are you talking about the incall volume? If yes I have made a patch for this already which fixes a couple of bugs. And one of them is the in call volume.
Here's a mirror made by the great WeekendsR2Short who just got his mirror thread stickied now.

Just flash it above the current virtuous infinity ROM you have and clean the dalvik cache.

hi, i appreciate the quick reply. i am referring to the actual speakerphone volume. i was on CM9 for a few hours, and know the speakerphone was loud enough to hear over the radio while driving. after i i went to V.I., the speaker phone volume sucks, but i am loving the rom... small compromise, but was hoping there was a fix, as in my little google efforts showed others have experienced the same thing.
i havn't tried the patch you linked me, i have used the Sound Enhancer Patch.zip from the same stickied thread though. hoping that would be the solution i was looking for, it seemed to increase the speakerphone volume slightly, but nowhere as loud as it was with CM9 or stock rom.
thinking of trying bulletproof right now, i see lots of praise on that rom too.

just tried the patch you linked me to in your reply. that fixed my problem! thanks a lot! my speakerphone is now as audible as it once was! i didn't try the all in one patch, i just tried the sound enhancer one. my problem is solved now.
i will post back with any updates, hopefully phone stays stable, i noticed after i installed the soundenhancer patch, while making a phone call and putting it on speaker to try it out, i was having the phone turn off on me, or OS crash, not sure. going to revert to backup i made in nandroid, and just apply the patch you linked me too. once again, thanks for the help!
I made both the sound enhancer patch and the all in one patch. The sound enhancer patch is buggy and I made a 2nd version of that. And after sometime I compiled all the fixes I made to VI into that all in one patch.

that explains why the sound enhancer patch didn't work then, i should have just did the AIO from the beginning.
ok, new problem i am trying to figure out, but while i got you on here....
my wifi won't turn on now. lol. was working fine earlier. it is stuck saying "turning on" and the checkbox is grayed out to off. was just gonna do a clean re-install of everything, but if you have an idea of how to fix that...

You need to replace the old kernel with the one included in the patch.
Judging by your problem I'm sure your S-On so what you should do is..
extract boot.img from the patch
then fastboot it into your phone.
The new kernel there fixes some other bugs which you might encounter soon so better flash it now rather than later. Else if you insist using the old kernel just replace the bcmdhd.ko in your /system/lib/modules with the one from the original VI flashable zip.

oh ok, makes sense. i had thought it was same kernal. and that i could just flash over rom. ill fast boot the patch kernal in then.
ill do that right now.
and yea, i am s-on, ill look into s-off this weekend. being able to flash from one different roms without having to fastboot through pc first would be a fun way to kill time. lol.
once again, thanks for the quick replies and help. you've been a great help. :good:
I prefer being s-on though but it's your choice. And yeah my device is s-on also.

well, maybe s-off isn't quite needed then, since i'm not quite a developer that will always be flashing new roms on. just trying to have fun with the phone when i can.
anyway, just wanted to report back that phone is running flawlessly now with new kernal and patch, camera is slightly cripser, less lag while multitasking, speakerphone nice and loud, and loving the new battery profiles.
i appreciate the quick help in getting my problem resolved. :good::highfive:
Speaking of camera apps, mattlowry found one for us that works GREAT in this ROM. It adds quite a few more settings that really adds some finetuning abilities for your pictures. If you haven't already, you ought to flash this attachment.....IMHO.

was this included in the unoffical_patch.zip?
i had this flashed onto my phone already, but reverted back to original backup, and flashed the unofficial_patch onto my phone, assuming it had the upgraded camera app too.
if i am mistaken, then ill go ahead and flash that camera app back on.
thanks for the info. :highfive:
edit- just re-read the section in your sticky. will flash the camera app back on. realized it wasn't included in the AIO patch.
:good: It adds enough that I certainly was glad Matt found it.
so i've been using the phone for about a week with no issues.
rather then starting a new thread, i thought i'd post some questions up in here. since i can't post in the developer thread for the rom.
just to confirm, panoramic picture doesn't work? and slow motion video doesn't work? just tried messing with those settings today, but app would just close. just wanted to make sure it wasn't working to begin with and not a faulty install on my part.
i was looking to buy a new battery, but noticed the phone has a 1800mhz battery from an evo 3d. my girlfriend said she bought it, because the original battery was really bad. is there a better battery upgrade for me than the 1800mhz? i notice battery life is great when not using the phone, but as soon as i start browsing the net, or listening to music, it sees the battery drains almost a percent every few minutes. is there an app or way to test health of a battery?
also, for the launcher/app drawer, is there a way to make the apps scroll vertically versus horizontally?
and while i'm asking questions, anyone have a recommendation for a mobile video editing app? something easy to trim clips, and add transitions, and maintain HD quality.
other then these few questions. i'm loving the phone and rom. been real stable besides the aforementioned things. it still has artifact glitching when using the blur tool in instagram, but that i can live with.
thanks in advance for any insight/help. :highfive::good:

Panoramic picture is a framework issue so downloading a 3rd party camera which doesn't depend on htc framework should work. And regarding slow motion video it's a kernel issue. Virtuous team never really focused on fixing the kernel to fix up it's compatibility(this includes 1080p recording) so we maybe having a decent sense 4 ROM but we got a crippled kernel.

It's a sense 4 thing. Better of using a different launcher instead or fully modify the layout of the rosie.apk. But I can't do it.

thanks for the reply! i will download that app for video editing, and find one for panoramic pictures.
i just downloaded cpu tuner, and set my clock sped to roughly 1.5ghz, phone is nice and snappy, real responsive, feels like a brand new phone. is this a safe stable range to clock at (1.5ghz)? or should i run lower, it was only at 1ghz, and i was reading that some roms actually set the kernal clock speed at 1.7ish... ill probably turn it down to 1.3ish, hopefully for better battery life and overall longevity of phone.
and whats a good minimum clock speed? was unsure what it meant, but i think its basically the resting clock speed when phone isn't in use?

My phone will get a bit freaky at 1.7gHz if I run it too long. My basic range is 192mHz to 1.5gHz all day everyday. I have yet to need 1.7gHz when 1.5gHz works for everything I need it to.

Increase volume in 4.2.1

Hi all,
Ever since I ugraded to 4.2.1, the volume+ app has had no effect on the frustratingly low volume of the tablet (music effects is set to volume+ in settings). I've been using earphones mostly as I can never make out anything coming out of the speakers when there is minimal noise around. I have a rooted tablet with stock firmware. Is there anything that can be done to significantly increase the volume?
Thanks.

Have you looked into installing Sony xLoud & ClearAudio+ using PimpMyRom? (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1908269)

That's too bad. The first post in PimpMyRom thread stated that all you needed was a rooted device so I thought it might work for you. Are you open to unlocking the device? In my experience, the benefits of unlocking and installing custom ROM/mods (including increased volume) have been totally worth the loss of warranty.

Very true!
But I think my tablet would have been left unused for most parts if not for the increased performance gained from unlocking it. Wonder what the failure rate has been so far.

I'm just sticking with 4.1 locked for now, under warranty, and Volume+ even works without root enhancement just great. I've got to turn it down so I don't blow out the speakers! I'm not seeing any reason to "upgrade" personally and I predict I will use my warranty before the year is over. CROMIX can wait. I've got this thing pretty dialed in and I'm satisfied with its performance and reliability rooted and locked on stock ROM. Can't wait to see what it really can do thought on custom ROM but not so bad that I want to pay Asus for repairs in exchange. To each their own.

Hey, in case you're still looking for a way to increase volume, I just found a fantastic app that can drastically increase volume on 4.2.1. It's called Music Volume EQ. I set the volume on it to 6/15 and the tablet sounds really loud. When I was playing with it the volume got so loud I was afraid of blowing the speakers. The equalizer on it works quite well, too.
You can autostart the app on boot and it'll remember your settings so once it's configured to your liking, you can just forget about it and enjoy the loud volume.

Franco Kernel vs Stock?

I am debating on whether to buy the pro version and flash Franco's Kernel for my Nexus 5 and 7 (2013). I just want to know what I bits of extra I can really do with it.. And if its worth it. I'm more worried about stability than anything I guess. I don't want to run into little issues whether it be audio, video, whatever it may be. Also I have never flashed a kernel or another ROM, I've always stuck with stock. I am running 4.4.2 right now utilizing Gravity Box and Wanam Kit, and a few other modules. Any input would be greatly appreciated. If this thread has been done before, my apologies. I am a brand new forum user, never really get on the computer.

Well to be honest the stock kernel allready is very good, the only downsides of it are batterylife/screenontime and colors are not very vibrant. These 2 aspects are substantialy better with Franco kernel. Screenontime and batterylife is improved by at least 50% or more for some (check out the Franco thread). Also you can raise the speaker/mic/in-call volume as you wish and load a color profile for better and more vibrant colors.
if you want stability stick with stock

I have been getting fantastic battery life with my setup now, I just leave brightness at auto, and from my bit of research, that seems to be the big culprit of battery life. I'm always looking to improve my phone in terms of performance and cosmetic, keeps me busy at negative 60 out here in North Dakota lol.
But 50% overall more battery life?! That's pretty friggin good. Would definitely pay for it for that kind of power.
I'm also assuming based on your post that the color control is not for LED control but the screen itself. Any idea if the Xposed LED module works well? I know its off topic just a quick question.
Not sure about the volumes, I usually don't mess with call volumes, but I'll look into it more.
Thanks for your post! Also please post the link to the Franco Thread.

If you are having trouble making a decision... just flash the kernel with fastboot and give it a test run. Can the free version of FKU auto flash? I'm not sure, you would have to investigate.
If you decide you like it (and the updates that go along with it), then maybe consider buying the app.
But yes, screen on time is better with FK due to the way the clock speeds scale. A lot better. Even with the stock settings, though I find even those to be a bit aggressive.

Most users report a screenontime of about 5-7 hours while stock is about 3,5 hours. Don`t know about the Xposed module but color controll in the Franco kernel updater app is realy good and there are various preloaded settings available. Link thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2508284. Backup your current kernel in the FKU before you flash a Franco kernel, so you can restore it if need be.

That's pretty awesome, definitely gonna try it out. I have a backup somewhere on my device, I think in Flashify, but I'll make another, can never hurt lol.
And thanks for the thread and all the other info!

Stick with stock for at least long enough to give yourself a baseline to judge other ROMs/kernels against.

I've had my Nexus 5 for roughly 2 months now I think, are you saying I should wait it out or do more research first? It is very scary for me lol. I'm always afraid to be making major internal changes without some form of consultation and research.

Also quick question, I don't need to back anything else up correct? Flashing a kernel does not mess with anything else does it?

I wouldn`t mess with the kernel settings like UV/OC besides color and sound optimisations. The stock settings are allready good enough for most users, only xperienced users should do that imo.

No, flashing kernels or recovery`s don`t wipe data.

That's what I'll do then, what kind of sound optimizations are there? Just the mic volume and whatnot? Or are there some for playing music, I have poweramp and use that equalizer, so just wondering.

You can only raise the volume levels (no EQ settings), this should not interfere with PowerAmp.

Oh last question, do you know of any stability issues with Franco Kernel? That is my number one concern, so just checking with you real quick before I go with it finally.

I haven`t had FC`s when i used the kernel, most issues of users we`re caused by undervolting too much.

does this improves the quality or just allows higher level of volume?
what about v4a?
Viper4Android does wonders for SQ. Also, Neutron is the best sounding music player but the UI sucks. Poweramp is probably the best all around player.

I definitely recommend V4A but I'm not sure about Lollipop compatibility so if that's what you're on then you need to look into it. I use Poweramp with my daily use headphones and I use Neutron when listening with my high end cans so I recommend both of those players. Honestly though, you don't have the most articulate headphones so you might not even notice a difference between Poweramp and Neutron so maybe just stick with Poweramp. I'm sure it'll be fine. The bitrate of your music files makes a MASSIVE difference too so make sure your files are good.
+1 for poweramp, it has good got equaliser to play around with

Question Any DSP solution working on the P7P?

James DSP, Viper etc don't work - anyone knows of a solution that does?

I mean...like any other audio processing app. Wavelet is basically viper but "lite" version of it. Same developer behind both.
Not sure about those reports but never experienced any "battery drain" with it.
Ah thanks for the feedback!

JamesDSP working fine for me. Need to say "Yes" when it asks you if you have a Huawei device. Viper4Android-RE also works for me (for those options that have had their functions enabled).
V4A-RE, RootlessJamesDSP, Wavelet, plenty of options available. Personally I use Wavelet. Seems to be the easiest for my use case (primarily for AutoEQ)

Seeing as all of those things do software signal manipulation rather than using hardware DSP, obviously they will work the CPU harder, which will in turn cause increased battery consumption.
JamesDSP and Viper RE are working just fine here. Mind you, the current Viper RE only has a few settings working.

Well very true, but the thread I read (telegram I think?)a couple of people were suggesting it really drains it. Anyway I guess I can see for myself!

Hmm, for me James DSP complains it cannot be installed on a 64 bit only system. Europe you mind sharing where you got it?
Also tried ViperRE, always complains about not being installed...
Well you need to flash the viper module as well.

You can download jamesdsp here https://zackptg5.com/android.php
Select yes when it asks about Huawei device.
It does work, I have tried them myself.
The module was not installing for me, complaining about compatibility. But I'll try again with the Huawei thing, thanks!
