You're posting in the wrong section.
Unlock bootloader automatically reset the phone. Root doesn't.
So whatever you do, back up 1st all your data. Local, cloud.
You can use migrate to backup. Its in playstore.

Re-unlock

I got a unlocked and rooted Nexus S. If for sercurity reasons i'll do a re-lock. Suppose i get my phone lost or stolen, the thief/person wont be able to flash any rom on that, since its locked. But if him do a re-unlock, i would get my data erased? Including my google account and security apps like Lookout, Prey, etc?
Thank you!

Yes - unlocking again will wipe again.

Wow... so we have no advantage on re-locking bootloader, isnt is? When it is locked, people will be able to flash over it but i think if someone have know-how to flash, probally they should know how to unlock too! And unlock seems easier than flash! Agree?
if you want to keep your data safer, re-locking bootloader will be better.
if you did not, someone can get your phone and refresh a rom, will get anything in your sd-card.

[Q] Is it possible to root without having to unlock bootloader?

I'm getting close to getting a new phone, and there is specific data from my Motorola Photon Q that I want to move onto my computer to put onto my new phone, but all the websites and searches for ways to root this phone say I have to unlock the bootloader, which in turn means I also have to delete all the data from my phone.
Is there a way to root my phone without having to delete all the data or unlock the bootloader?

When you rooting photon q or unlock bootloader you dont loose anything, some one wrote somewhere a bulls...
you dont lose anything from your phone, only flesh to stock or wipe / factory reset cause this not unloading bootloader or root
It is in fact, possible to root the Photon Q without unlocking your bootloader. It's called Towelroot. I did that, and it worked perfectly.

[Q] Should I root and/or lock my bootloader

I have a nexus 5. The bootloader is unlocked. It has stock OTA lollipop.
I have a few questions about this device. I have read this device is special in that unlocking the bootloader does not wipe the phone. Is that true? My impression is that locking the bootloader does NOT wipe the device (true for many device), correct?
My dilemma is this. I have read it is good to have a locked bootloader, but I don't want to then later unlock it if it wipes my device. I could root and lock, but I think I lose root when the next OTA update comes. I will hence be in locked without root state.
Anyway, my question is, do I need to lock it? Should I root it first? What do I do when I lose root next OTA and the bootloader is locked? This isn't a problem if unlocking the loader doesn't wipe the device.

Unlocking the bootloader will wipe your device, unless you're rooted and use bootunlocker. Personally I leave my bootloader unlocked. You do loose some security though by doing this

I guess it would help to know the security risks.
I only install apps from the play store, and usually only ones with a huge amount of traffic.

The security risk is if you lost your phone or it's stolen. With an unlocked bootloader it's easier to get to the contents of your phone. But if you don't use a pin or pattern lock it wouldn't make a difference.

ah right. I was thinking that if someone physically got their hands on my they could just unlock and have access to it. but of course unlock wipes it!
Ok. thanks. I get it now.

Rooting phone without data wipe

i want to know if there's a way to root your device (for the first time) without data being wiped?
i only want root access nothing more
Getting a root access doesn't wipe out data if you have an unlocked bootloader.
You cant root your phone without unlocking the bootloader.
And to unlock the bootloader there is no way you can do that without data getting lost.
So for the first time rooting phone without loosing data is not possible I guess.

Ulefone S8 pro - rooting without unlocking bootloader possible?

Hello,
i have to root my S8 pro now because the whole internal memory is nearly used by apps and system.
Is there a opportunity to root my device without unlocking bootloader?
I found magisk to modify the boot-partition and for example getting root on the device.
But you have to unlock the bootloader to flash the new boot-partition. I also read that unlocking bootloader always means that the whole device is resetted to factory-defaults which means losing all installed apps.
I have about 50 !! banking apps for generating TANs. For these apps, it's not enough to reinstall the app. You also need to reconnect the app (especially the device) to the banking account.
I think the only way to backup the the configured and connected app is to have root on the device, right?
My plan was to root the device without unlocking bootloader, then make a full-backup, unlock bootloader which resetting the deivce, and restore the full-backup.
After this, I un-root my device because the banking-apps check if a device is rooted. My plan is t re-roote the device using magisk only when needed and when no banking app is used, and then un-root it again.
Any idea how to solve my problem?
Regards
UP
