I've seen this problem mentioned back in September when Android 10 was introduced with pixels 3, the failure of all sensors. But now I have exactly same problem with my 3a after latest October security update. Anybody experiencing same issues with 3a? Any suggestions? Thank you

No Speaker Mode Sound
During active calls and incoming calls the speakerphone doesnt come on for some reason. Is there a well known fix for this? :crossesfingers:
Google said they won't replace it unless I get a repair associate to admin they can't fix it.

Pixel 3a overheating
Hello there, long time lurker here. After recently acquiring a Google Pixel 3a, I came across an overheating issue. I was using the Facebook app to stream a lengthy video to Facebook while at the same time using the wifi hotspot feature to connect my tablet to the internet. After about 10 minutes or so, my cell connection failed after displaying an overheating warning overtop of my stream, which at least kept recording. The wifi hotspot stayed on until I turned it off after about 15 minutes, after which my cell reconnected and the Facebook app uploaded the rest of the video. I had streamed twice before with this phone with no issues, and I had use an S9 before this without any issues. Both phones had a screen protector and an otterbox. Any thoughts on how I could help prevent another overheating issue besides removing the otterbox? I hope to have the Pixel 3a rooted at some point soon, perhaps underclocking?

I have a pixel 3a in full stock, no root. Latest q Nov update. Bootloader unlocked. Would like to relock. Will relocking erase data same as unlocking did?

Thanks for your reply. I went ahead and turned off "now playing" option in settings and that stopped the noise while recording. Hopefully they fix it soon

Pixel 3a XL Android 10 bootloop when rooting
Hello all, a bit of a basic issue but it's got me in a bit of a pickle. I have an Pixel 3a XL on Android 10, december update, and tried to root following this thread's Boot Image Patching method.
I downloaded the same version stock image, extracted the boot.img, and patched it with the latest stable version of Magisk (version 20+). After that, I ran
Code:
flash boot magisk_patched.img
, and tried to reboot - no dice, says "error boot prepare". In my panic I tried various things, including
Code:
flash boot magisk_patched.img --slot=all
,
Code:
flash boot boot.img --slot=all
, but nothing helped. Recovery mode does not work - kicks me back to fastboot with same error.
What's the best way out of this hitch? I heard something about restoring a stock image, but have no idea how to do that.
EDIT: Tried running flash_all.bat and realized the silliest mistake of all - I had assumed my phone is the Pixel 3a XL when it is, in fact, Pixel 3 XL. I had flashed the wrong version!
I redownloaded the stock image for Pixel 3 XL, ran flash-all.bat and it saved itself. Keeping this post up to remind myself to check my eyesights, mayhaps.

Hi guys.
Pixel 3a with December 2019 updated on Android 10.
No Rooting done.
I also have a MiA3 with gcam apk installed.
The selfie on MiA3 with gcam come of better than on my P 3A.
Why is that? They have better dynamic range and details as well(on zooming).

Semi circle appearing over home button
I woke up this morning to a semi circle appearing over my home button. I can't seem to find any apps that updated over night and it doesn't seem to do anything. Any ideas as to what it is?
Thanks!

I have a ringtone bug on my pixel 3a, when i set a new ringtone by default Google duo notification is ringing . But in can hear custom ringtone on whatsapp call.
Any solution?

My sister's 3a also has this issue. She said that the selfie has some blur on photos.
When I check on the photos, they seem fine, but I'm not really an expert on selfies or photos in general. So in that case I trust her judgement.
I thought the latest update would fix but it didn't Android 10, Jan 1, 2020 Security patch.

If 3a unlock bootloader, flash custom and root, will it have problem to active eSim(Google Fi)?
I plan to switch to google fi service. Thanks for any reply.

You have to turn on night mode and then be completely still with the phone, like as in you can't hold it. Either you need a tripod or you'll have to prop it up in a good position with a rock or something (pain in the ass). Then as long as it detects no movement it'll pop up , while in night mode, and tell you that astrophotography is on.

Hey so I'm still in the January update. I used to get the OTA's just fine but checking for updates refuses to find anything. I'm rooted stock with majisk and I'm wondering what steps to take to update and keep root. Been searching all day and can't find a clear answer.

So I figured it out, using a few different posts. Basically I went from January to April right using data by downloading the factory image and flashing each component, (bootloader, radio, and image) separately. Then I followed the guide to patch the boot image with magisk.

Hey guys,
I recently picked up a Sprint Pixel 3a that I've been using on Fi. The phone is a bit sluggish lately and I'm wondering how to go about speeding it up. Animations take some time to load and it just feels slow in general. I'm not new to rooting/installing custom ROMs, but I wanted to see if any of you had any good suggestions as to what to do to make the phone feel snappier. I'm open to rooting and installing a custom ROM if needed. Thanks for the help!!

Nougat Beta Thoughts & Issues

The other Beta thread is a little crazy with everything, and there is not much regarding the title of this thread any way.
Anyway, so far, I REALLY dig 7! I love the changes to the UI and such, and where Samsung went with it overall. I haven't seen stock 7.0/7.1, so I cannot say how close to stock they kept it, but I hear it's even closer than before. That, I think it awesome.
Everything seems snappier, and the way things open and close is pretty slick. The new color scheme is nice too. A LOT less 4 year old than I've come to expect from Android lately.
Battery life for me is pretty much the same. I'm getting from 4-5am to 10pm with still 40-50% left.
New menus, dropdown, etc. are nice too. The app drawer is SOOOO much better now that you sort it alphabetically once, and it stays that way, instead of every time you install a new app, or one updates, it would put whatever app at the very end.
However, after a couple days of zero issues, I'm starting to have some.
Notifications will not swipe away sometimes. Generally it might take several attempts to swipe away, but sometimes they just won't unless I unlock and do it again. Fairly annoying.
Changing permissions in app manager sometimes causes Settings to force close. Not a big one there since I can change permissions elsewhere.
The cache fills up more quickly and the phone starts to lag after just a couple days. I wipe cache and whatever about once a week and reboot the phone, now I am doing so every 2-3 days it seems. No biggie there, I realize this is beta.
That's it for now. Your turn.
I find the 7.0 beta fast & smooth. Battery life has doubled for me. I used to have to get a charge around 7-8 hours of use. I'm now getting 12 hours between charges.
I like the UI except for the notifications. The large, white background is ugly.
I've noticed that wireless fast charging doesn't always work. Sometimes it says it's charging but when I pick up the phone the battery hasn't charged.

- Settings: Editing up to 9 Settings shortcuts, only shows 8 for me but trying to select another for a 9th errors stating one is already there. It was due to having Battery as a shortcut before, but now in the beta this is under Device Maintenance. Reported as a Bug. EDIT: Clearing cache/data on Settings removes all shortcuts at the top of the Settings app, and you can re-add what you like again, and fixes my issue mentioned above.
- Galaxy Apps Store: Missing, but can access via Galaxy Essentials Widget or Samsung Gear, also reported as Bug.
I would encourage anyone who has registered and taken the beta to file any Bugs or Suggestions in the app Samsung Members. If you flashed the beta with Odin and didn't officially register, you may not see this app and cannot provide feedback. Samsung did reply to both of my above Bug reports, stating that they were aware of them and will fix them in the next beta release. They are looking and reviewing those, so I encourage everyone who's having an issue to report it, be thorough and explain how to reproduce your issue, provide screenshots if applicable.
Don't be that person who just files a Bug or Suggestion with "It's not working FIX NAO" or "Add this feature or I'm never buying Samsung again!!11"...but I cannot stop you if you decide to do that.
Since installing the Beta, I'm quite happy.
1. Faster and smoother performance, does not start to lag
2. Better notifications system
3. Can turn off the hated Bluetooth volume warning/limit
4. Zero issues so far with normal use
Only downside so far is loss of Foxfi tethering.
Only odd issue is that my phone System Update in Settings doesn't recognize that the phone has been updated to the Beta version. Still says I'm on PH1 build from September.

I followed the instructions in the other thread's first post and successfully installed the Beta. Now my phone is randomly restarting every couple of minutes....oh jeeze. Unusable, hoping I can figure out what's wrong, or roll back...
Edit: Maybe related to Samsung bloat I disabled with package disabler? Can't get package disabler to work
Double-Edit: Things seem good after a factory restart.
Feedback : Don't user package disabler with this. Hope this helps someone.

I'm using EZ Disabler and it works fine for me.
For those whos galaxy apps store icon disappeared, I had that too, I think its a bug in the upgrade, because I did a factory reset and the icon came back. All the issues I had went away too. Very Very impressed by this beta.

I am having two issues:
1. My accessibility settings get reset each time I reboot my phone.
2. When I click on the gallery icon in the camera app, it says there are no pictures. It's saving all the images as an album. Not sure if this is a setting but I can't locate it.
Does anyone know where to report these issues if we are on the official beta?

Same here. I use LastPass and the app filling service (uses the accessibility framework) gets disabled on each reboot. I reported it to the app maker as well just in case it's an Android 7 framework change and not a beta issue.

I did the update .. once the update was installed .. did a full factory reset.
So far so good .. UI is fluid/smooth .. have had no problems with making or receiving calls, sending and receiving messages (SMS and MMS) .. Applications (which I have a lot of) are doing good with only 1 hiccup and that was with executing Facebook. The application would immediately crash. Now, I also use Messenger and Words with Friends (tied into my Facebook) .. so I tried Words with Friends first, was able to log in using my Facebook credentials no problem. Next, Messenger.. because I used the same credentials with Word with Friends, Messenger automatically logged me in using the same. So since both those worked, I tried Facebook again .. success, didn't need to log in and it when straight to the page.
Only other issue I have noticed .. my WiFi will disconnect spontaneously, even though I'm within 10 feet of it. It would also lose it's credentials (WEP info) .. so I need to re-enter to get connected.

I actually tried this and it said my device wasn't registered and wouldn't allow me to give any feedback. For those that are though, please please use that app to tell Samsung what bugs or issues you come across. Posting them everywhere else won't get them fixed.
Thanks to all who are putting in their input and testing Nougat to its limit. This is a rock solid beta so far.
I like it so far, just wish there was a root.
I'm getting a significant bump in battery life. I attribute it to the improved doze mode in 7.0. The blue light filter is something that is more useful to me than Samsung Pay!

Absolutely love the 7.0 beta so far. Everything is much smoother than marshmallow and the animations are a lot more appealing. You can tell that Samsung didn't intrude very much into the stock 7.0 look.
I'm constantly finding little tweaks that make me go "woah", such as the display resolution customization and in-depth battery saver settings. I also just found out that if you click the wording "Flashlight" in your notification draw it allows you to change the brightness. A small feature but I find it extremely useful.
Other than that I'm just genuinely impressed at the performance boost and battery savings this beta has brought with it.
10/10
Also, if you want a more stock look download the theme "Material Dark".

A noob question! Since you don't have VoLTE line it may never be incuded in the ROM. Correct? That being the case, is it possible for you to take the module from other moto devices or say if i could send you my phone's image, could you add the module to rom? It would be really helpful. Eversince I uncloed my device, every update makes me reset the phone and gets stuck on bootloop. It's very time consuming and beats the hell out of me

VoLTE might be included in next builds. If there is a magisk module that fixes it send me the name and I'll see through it
Well I'm really sorry, but I've never rooted any device on custom roms. So I'm clueless to as to what module can help you. But really thank you if you are trying to implement the VoLTE, my phone has been without it for a few months now and i can't makes calls without it. Sorry again
First of all thank you for your efforts. It is my first time installing a custom ROM, I also accidentally lost all my data while using fastboot, but anyways. The ROM is quite smooth and working very well.
I have seen below issues,
- The fingerprint sensor can lock phone, and there is no option to disable it. If you launch an application that requires fingerprint unlocking, auth attempt locks the phone and it becomes annoying after a while.
- There are two camera apps, the (seemingly) default one says "Hardware version does not support portrait mode". And I set a default camera app a few times, but somehow sometimes Android keeps forgetting the default one and asks again.
- FM Radio, not a big deal, but does not have an option to work without wired headphones. Perhaps some apps are not included because this is the bare bones Pixel Android.
Thanks again. I am sure having a solid build takes a lot of effort. The experience is quite nice.
Ps. For a newbie like me, there is no explanation for the difference of Pixel Experience and PE Plus. I am still wondering. I installed the standard one.
Bluetooth Devices
Hello! First of all, thanks for all your efforts for delivering this great ROM.
I'd like to ask a question: in the previous versions (unofficial), Bluetooth devices, such as headphones, did not work. Are they working in this version?
Thanks.

Yes the do!
The reason why it wasn't official before was due to that issue but now it's solved
Backup
Hello!
I've succesfully installed the Plus version of this ROM. The process was smooth (for the first time after trying many different ROMs!).
The ROM works very well, and I really like it.
However, I've experienced one small bug: Backup on Drive and WhatsApp is not working. It is stuck on "waiting for backup". I have searched for some solution online: I tried cleaning Drive's cache and forcing the app to stop, I tried some commands through ADB (following the instructions on this link https://forum.xda-developers.com/mi-8/how-to/guide-google-backup-waiting-to-backup-t3895101) .
This has partially fixed the bug: now the Data App are backed up but not the other things (contacts, SMS, etc.).
Is anyone else experiencing a similar issue?
Thanks in advance!
Bug: When I press and hold an icon in the app drawer, sometimes a black or colored rectangle appears around that icon.
I'm using the normal version and latest update.

Xiaomi Mi 10 Ultra Global / Custom Rom Development

I know this device is currently only available in China and not planned for a global release. I had one imported and I have been getting my feet wet with development. How hard is it to extract the kernel and driver blobs from the Chinese Rom and create a Global Rom or Custom Rom? I know I'm asking a bit of a "how long is a piece of string" question here. It's because I don't know what I don't know. I figured I just get the conversation started here in-case anyone else has more input / experience on this subject. As this device isn't too much different than the Mi 10 / 10 Pro models, I've been trying to retrace the footsteps of the development on these devices.

I can see the boot.img and recover.img files within. I know you can extract the kernel from the boot.img file but I'm not great with a hex editor / binary splitter.

I'm with you on this, looking for alternative English rom and the possibility of being able to enable band 20 in the radio chip. I'm sure this has been software disabled, you just wouldn't make a separate chip with no Band 20, it's much cheaper to use a stock chip.
Going to apply for bootloader unlock today, as it looks like there is a waiting period. Done my back ups yesterday, so hopefully bootloader unlocked soon, then wait for twrp and root. I'm no coder but happy to help if I can be of any help.
Developer Options has OEM unlock and the method to use the Mi Unlock Tool to start the waiting period. So the process seems the same as for any other Mi phone I guess I will be starting that off too this weekend!

This makes sense... I don't "know" if it's true but I've definitely seen before this attempted in custom ROMS: stuff like changing the modem config, software solutions. And it is the sister phone to the main Mi 10 line, which does come in Global. So... Here's hoping!
This is pretty interesting. Here in Spain the Band 20 is the only one we're missing, and it would be wonderful if it can be activated.
It would be the perfect phone if it wasn't for this and for the red tint on some 4K videos.
There's a thread on xda about unlocking the band frequencies on qualcomm devices. If anyone could try it would appreciate a lot. :fingers-crossed:

I too am very interested in seeing if it's possible to get band 20 enabled, that would be awesome. I've looked for threads on this subject, there is one in particular that has a lot of information on it, right here. It seems that a lot of people active different bands in the LTE config file, check with an app that looks at the config file but don't actually check to see if the modem installed in the phone supports those bands and lets the phone connect to them. So I'm cautious, looks to me some people here report false-positives.
Please keep us posted, a combined effort here might shed more light on the possibilities and ways to get there.
EDIT: The phone has the Qualcomm X55 5G modem (source), which does just about every band on 2G, 3G and 4G according to several sites (example). So hardware-wise we might be good.
Defo. I'm keeping a cross several forums but as it's so new, there's not too much happening yet. Shame it's only China that it's released in or there would much quicker work. edit, after having a good read of the articles and posts, flashing or changing modem settings looks promising to open up the closed bands. As others have done this, at least there is some hope. First thing is to get this rooted. Another few days to get this done but I am looking for root, twrp and magisk info for this one.
There's a Telegram Group for Mi 10 that will be used also for Ultra
Maybe there will be more infos there, maybe a unified build

It looks to me like the Mi 10 / Pro / Ultra all share most of the same chips:

Makes me wonder if it isn't as easy as adapting one of the existing roms for those devices to run on the Ultra....

Whats this about? Is this the only option to unlock the phone? I am new to Xiaomi having been a Samsung Note user from day 1, and don't understand this process ....
Is there another option for those who are willing to wait? or is this the only way to unlock the phone? I have tried to stay clear of signing up for anything on this device. I get pop-ups often on this phone. An example is in Settings -> VPN. I have my own paid VPN service, yet there is no way to set anything. Press VPN in Settings and I get "Set Lock Screen Password - Set a lock screen password to save your VPN settings" why? I've never had to do this for any device in the past. I don't do passwords, thumb scan, face reco or any of those things. Yet this is the only option? Its terribly intrusive that MY password MUST be stored on the device for MY VPN service, with no other option.
Is this the case with unlocking? No other option?
Thx.

You REALLY should have worked out some of your scenarios before you got the phone. For me and a lot of other people here I guess, the obvious thing to do is see the phone itself now as a temporary project which you will eventually customise to your liking.
Example now, this morning, I've flashed Xiaomi.eu's ROM instead of the stock Chinese image. And you've not even started the unlock countdown yet and had it as long as me? Trust me, nobody posts things "the hard way", if there was another method I'd have mentioned it.
Please take this as friendly advice: you really don't seem like you like your phone. That's OK, anything positive I've said about the Mi 10 Ultra has been with one eye on the future. MIUI is... I can work with it, but I'm looking to wave it goodbye, yknow?
IMO What you WANT to be doing with this is yes, doing the Mi Unlock service TODAY - and next week, several of us will already have had a week in a xiaomi.eu rom. Plenty of us want as close to stock android as possible!
So, with respect, I see you're having issues now, but get on the boat already - start that unlock countdown, and start dreaming of what can be changed about your phone. Much of what you're unhappy about here is strictly software.

You mean like you quoted mine with everything but custom ROM development?
A custom ROM would solve all your problems. But yeah, if I'm the bad guy for saying "the best thing you can do for your phone today is start the unlock process" then I can live with who I am.
But if you have a ton of complaints, list them in a reply to me I get a notification about, then you can't wonder why I respond. I thought you relied on notification features yourself?
Similarly, I am also looking forward to custom ROMs (for example, rehabilitation Remix / PE / havoc). I am a Chinese user, and I hope that God can make native ROMs as soon as possible

I can just speak for the 2019 Xperias:
-BT AAC Codec isn't working actually
-Calls may have no Audio
But that's all on My Bug List. It seems like the latest Versions aren't booting on the Xperia 1 III so it will be the same on the 5 III. But I will help to fix that if People are willed to test around... That's why I'm also on GitHub...

Are you willing to develop a stable version for me? I am willing to donate higher amounts to fund the development. I'm quite tired of the way Sony does their software.
The auto downgrade to 60Hz everytime the phone gets slightly hot. That software feature itself drives me mad from using the phone.

Totally agree with You about the Software since the Z3 (Z3+/Z4). They started a Semi-Public Beta Program to optimize the Firmwares with an Bareboned AOSP. Still lacking a lot of the old famous Featurs like the Mini Apps, Extra Apps, Widgets, Brands like Cybershot, Walkman and so on... It's sad!
I'm really trying to get the best out of it (still). So i will solve the issues asap (next 24hrs).
Let's try to solve the Performance issues right after that!
I splitted My MARS SOMs into 3 Gears. Everything is explained on GitHub. Also updated the Threads and the ReadMe's. Also made huge Progress with My own Overlay. It's a firsty on Android Development (including incredible and tons of Features). Give "Gear Second" and "Gear First" a try for now. It should work fine yet (except for the Audio issues maybe)

We should be the one to thank you! I will try your new build out and give feedback. Yes i think the Xperia needs s custom kernel or custom profiles at least.
Something is not right with how the stock kernel processes tasks. Games do not get the phone hot. But teamviewer, uber and google maps does for some reason. One other Xperia 5 III owner reported that the Franko Kernel Manager solves this issue. Perhaps we can take reference from this and improve?

The Problems with the Performance should be fixed over the MARS Base SOM. I played around with the Kernel Settings and it doesn't seems to improve stuff further. LMK and ZRAM are the bad Guys at the end. Paired with wrong rendering of certain Apps like Google Maps. Everything of that and more should be improved with My fully working SOMs. I would be glad to make it work on the last 6 Flagships from SONY (Maybe even the Pro Devices). Just need some help with the testing...
Really reached some big Goals the last week or so. Really looking forward to make it 100% stable for everyone. There are also more things planned for our Xperias which are really ambitious...

Hey there. Just managed to install your SOM and test it out for a while. Overall stability is there and performance seems identical to stock.
Just would like to raise some stability issues:
Unable to turn on Wi-Fi on my end so far. Turning it on through notification shade shortcut causes System UI to freeze momentarily and W-Fi goes off after that. Turning it on through settings causes Settings to freeze momentarily and Wi-Fi goes off after that. It doesn't show list of Wi-Fi networks
Screen refresh rate still drops to 60Hz when phone gets warm and there is no way to force change it back to 90Hz or to turn this feature off
Also raising these suggestions:
We have to find a way to improve the time from fingerprint scan to home screen. It has taken too long since the first Xperia 5. Also, pressing the power button and resting finger on the sensor at the same time seems to get to home screen faster. Just resting finger on the sensor without pressing the power button takes a longer time. I think it is something to do with software
Is it feasible to port over Lineage OS or similar?
Thank you and looking forward to hearing from you and supporting your work!
Thanks again for Your detailed Feedback @SPEEDHAMMER ! I have just released another big Update which should improve things further...
I would really like to see You on My Disco rd Server to share more Details about my upcoming work with You!
I'm about to create an Xperia Exclusive OS with many great Features. There are already some people around and I'm sure they would like to see You too!

Excuse me, I've just come back after 3 years of stock ROMs. What is the order of flashing the Pixel Experience? I used to use a custom recovery, but as I see there's no such one for 5 III and I didn't find any instruction. Do I just flash the ROM via "fastboot flash system_b pe.img"?
Now I have a stock ROM with all-working Magisk. Do I need a full-wipe also? There's a GSI flashing after Magisk installation in your general instruction, right?

You need the Pixelsystem.img File
Place it next to fastboot and execute:
fastboot flash system_a Pixelsystem.img
Followed by
fastboot flash system_b Pixelsystem.img
Wipe Your Device or it doesnt Boot
fastboot -w
Thats it
Sorry, have the same error during step 5 and during flashing PE. I made a mistake somewhere.

Qin F21 Pro - general questions around unlocked versions, OTA and latest updates.

Hello XDA folks,
Having web searched myself into a bit of a confused state, just reaching out with a few questions. Many years ago I used to flash phones, however these days a combination of parenthood, a fear of squandering money spent on a device by bricking it, and avoiding the anxiety of the unknown when modifying my device has led me down the 'factory phone' path in recent years. With this mindset I recently (very excitedly!) purchased an AliExpress unlocked Qin F21 Pro, hoping to 'take the easy way out' and be able to install APK's and have a google free device, without having to worry about working out how to flash, root, etc. Here is a snap of the description:

I just had a few questions that I was unable to form a definitive answer about with my web searching, while I wait on delivery of the phone:
1) I've now come across some posts online that mention that with later updates, APK's can now be installed, when they couldn't in the past. I might be having some buyers remorse as I might have purchased the unlocked model unnecessarily. What part of the unlocking process blocks OTA updates? From what I can tell, there probably isn't a straightforward method to bring the phone back to a state where it can receive OTA updates or manually apply updates such as these?
2) Can anybody (with the latest OTA update) confirm whether the 'keypad backlight not working' issue had been resolved?
3) For unlocked models like these, what would the result of a factory reset be?
Thanks very much for reading, kind regards, Joe.

Question 1) OTA updates are regulated and distributed by each individual carrier, SIM/carrier unlocking a device puts the device onto a state of not being dedicated to any specific network so that it can be activated on any compatible network. It is no longer committed to any network, carriers only push OTA updates to their own supported devices that are offered and sold by them, not devices from other networks or devices they didn't offere/sell.
But, you can still update the device, it just won't be via OTA, it's as simple as downloading the newest update for your specific model number and flashing it via your device's specific flashing tool. In your case, it is probably SPflashtool or MTK droidtools.
Question 2) I don't know, I don't have this device.
Question 3) The results of a factory reset would be the same as it would be on any other device, it would remove all data that was not factory installed or flashed in a firmware package.

Thanks @Droidriven appreciate the answers. My current phone is a Redmi Note 4X which was receiving updates, although it was an Aliexpress purchase. Would that mean that Xiaomi were distributing updates outside of the proper OTA framework that you described, sidestepping the carrier and just going direct to their devices?
I hadn't thought about SIM/carrier unlocking in years, had originally assumed that the 'unlocking' that the seller is referring to might have meant the boot loader.

Thanks all the same.

Question 3) The results of a factory reset would be the same as it would be on any other device, it would remove all data that was not factory installed or flashed in a firmware package.

Ok, I was quietly hoping that it would do something like revert the phone back to a locked state where it can receive updates. But like you said earlier, it sounds like a simple process to apply an OTA update manually. I'll do some digging and see if a repository for these OTA updates exists somewhere, with guide and tool. That is - if the bug fixes and/or new features in the updates are actually worth pursuing. Was mainly concerned about the apparent 'no keypad backlight' issue from Question 2.
Much appreciated mate, thanks again

Redmi could be pushing OTA updates to their international models that are not dedicated to a specific carrier from the factory.
I've had the phone for a about a week and been breaking it in, getting everything set up. Just a quick update to close this thread. After some discussion with the seller on Aliexpress, there was a bit of a language barrier - however they explained that in the case of this particular sale, 'unlocked' meant the ability to install apk's.
Here is a shot of some info from the handset:
An answer to question 2: The keypad backlight is working, and there is a setting to choose how long it stays on for, which is working - If you wake the phone with the middle navigation button, or the top left (Q) or right (back) keys, I have it set to 10 minutes so it's always on when unlocked:
Question 3: According to the seller, apk's can still be isntalled when factory reset, so it looks like the phone won't revert to any unusual states if reset:
