Gesture Navigation without Pixel Launcher - Google Pixel 3a Questions & Answers

I like the new gesture navigation, but I do not use the Pixel launcher. I understand that gesture navigation is part of the pixel launcher (at least access to horizontal recents).
Is there anyway to use gesture navigation (including the new horizontal recents) without the Pixel launcher constantly running in the background and using memory?

I don't use it and it will probably always be running in background. So what? It uses less than 50 MB and the bad RAM management isn't because of that

If he dont use it [setting the default launcher in settings to another] it will stop hogging the RAM, after a bit of time.

Try FluidNG?

Launcher Comsumption

Well since I'm always looking for the lightest launcher (not that my phone is slow but I want a launcher just to play my 3d intensive games), I decided to post my findings about various Launchers here, I'll add more as I test them, this is using Task Manager when the Launcher is running as the main app (because if I launch GO for example and it isn't the default one, it will show the same RAM usage but 0% CPU usage), I measured at least five times each so I could get an average - that's using a Milestone 2 (Droid 2) non overclocked, rooted:
Home (Motorola): CPU 5%ish, RAM 20-25 MB
Go Launcher: CPU 10-12%, RAM 20-31 MB
Launcher 7: CPU 10-12%, RAM 22-25MB
Regina Launcher 3D: CPU 1-5%, RAM 15-25MB
Zeam: CPU 0%, RAM 9-12 MB
Zeam would always give me 0% CPU no matter what except when it was starting (drawing icons, app drawer and all) when it gave me 40%ish CPU and 50mb RAM.
LauncherPro would never appear on Task Manager so if anyone has a tip on which program to use to measure its RAM and CPU consumption I'd love a suggestion.
Since Dungeon Hunter 2 is the only game that constantly gives me slowdowns (other demanding games like Eternal Legacy, Reckless Racing and Spider Man Total Mayhem almost never show slowdowns, Hero of Sparta does but al reviews say it was badly coded compared to the iPhone version so I thought there was no point in using it to test Launchers), I used that game as a 'benchmark'.
I was only able to play it without it slowing down constantly when I performed certain actions (the animation of the trasure flipping when you open a chest) and having 90% smooth battles even using the fairy spells (which are full of effects) using Zeam. The game was almost unplayable using default Motorola Blur Home (although I tested Spider Man, which is the fastest action 3D game I have, and it worked flawlessly), and I'd say LauncherPro, even leaving all widgets (facebook, twitter, sms, calendar) on, delivered an experience almost as good as Zeam, same can be said for Regina Launcher although the Launcher itself slows down because it's all 3D and stuff. Performance under Launcher7 wasn't good.
I'm going to test ADW and the Gingerbread launchers now (have 4 of them, one by Steve Lin, one by someguy373 - sorry forgot the name, HELauncher and another one called Gingerbread Launcher like the 373 guy's one), but I'm hoping someone will come with better way to test hi-end game performance under several launchers (since in my case it's the only thing that seems to be affected by them, I charge my phone daily and since Droid2's battery sucks anyway I can't say I have noticed battery differences among them).
Awesome info Although I'm surprised at the moto home using up so little resources though
And to see Launcher Pro, If you're using Advanced Task manager go into Settings then change the security level to low so you can see all the Apps and processes running, Launcher Pro should be one of them

Oh thanks, I'll install advanced Task Man to see, there are other launchers I can't see as well such as the gingerbread ones.
LauncherPro has a debug feature IIRC, it should be in the Advanced settings.

Yeah it's showing me 15-25mb most of the time.

With atrix I use adw paid version with every animation possible but HTC magic 32b I needed all the resources I could get and use zeam. Thanks for the info

Try GO, too. It appears to consume little overhead while offering the best features of adw ex and lpp (plus I like its task management widget).
I'm curious to find out what its footprint is in comparison to the others

You can try Home Manager for the RAM usage (about 28 -32MB on my phone - X8, stock 2.1). Still no clue to the CPU consumption tho.
Thanks
Thank you so much for this info, is very very helpfull.
Currently I'm using ADW Ex, but I will look for either Zeam of LauncherPro.
Zeam is a very good launcher, I hope to get more features in the next updates.
Thanks again.
This pretty much sums up why I use the Zeam Launcher over other feature-heavy launchers like LPP, GO or ADW. Of course, the results are more or less expected except for the MotoBlur. @[email protected]
If anyone can provide the info regarding the usage of the Touchwiz and Sense, I'll really appreciate it. I'm itching to go back to my home launcher again. XD
Have you tried HeLauncher?
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.handlerexploit.launcher_reloaded&feature=search_result
Seems like it might be light but im not sure...
With the built in launcherpro memory useage display the highest I see is 10.x MB, and for the most part it hovers around 9.5-9.8MB.
EDIT: I found launcherpro in Task Manager as android.process.acore. Task manager has it consuming about 28MB of memory and 0-1% CPU.

ICS Ram Monitor

Is there a way to monitor ram on ICS? I know in GB, you can see ram in About phone.
For ICS, that option is gone, is there anyway to monitor ram? Or is there anyway to add it back?
I know there are widgets, but can anyone recommend me a good widget that uses very LITTLE ram.
On ICS I get aroudn 160MB/404.4MB Free
And with browser open and a few application there, I get around 60MB free.

I've been looking for a good system reading widget also. One thing I noticed is all the ram reading widgets I tried doesn't display ram values correctly.

add shortcut to desktop > settings > running services
shows you what services are running as well as current RAM usage on the bottom. i usually use 150-200MB. never run out of RAM like on the galaxy s 4g with touchwiz. touchwiz does horrible things to your RAM.

I use "Sense Analog Clock Dark" Widget. It fills the purpose of literally everything that I need on my main screen. It takes up about roughly 23-24 MB of my space. Some of the things that you can utilize with this widget are:
* Clock
* Weather
* System Info
* Next Alarm Info
* Date
* You can also configure the HOUR & MINUTE tab to launch 2 different apps.

Must have apps to improve workflow and SPEED on Mate 7?

What is your must have apps to speed up the device ?
For me first of all. The SMS app TEXTRA, is really amazing..and really make messaging fast on Mate 7, it is not heavy on the gpu or cpu, fast pop up notifications.
Pop UP notifcations also work well in Locked mode so even if your device is in lock screen you do not need to unlock the phone you can also reply quickly in the LOCK SCREEN WITHOUT using the finger print scanner...
Second MUST HAVE app is C notice, brings superior multi tasking functionality to Mate 7.
Unfortunately this app is not free but it cost..not much..
Third QuickPIC, and other absolute must have app for the mediocre performing phone Mate 7.
With QuickPIC it will load pictures WITHOUT lag and very snappy and fast.
I have tried must gallery apps out there and QUICKPIC is really the ONLY one that is fast
enough that it does not lag on this device. Try it and you will see the difference.
These 3 APPS will make your device feel more faster and mordern.
Besides this of course I do not need to bring up again the importance of chaining the animations speed
in developer options set it to .5x
Great app I've been using is App Swap. It's a brilliant substitute for not having an App Drawer or (even if you're using an alternative launcher) just for getting to your app drawer without going home first.
It basically allows you to swipe up on the circle home button to open your app drawer.

I will try that, any specific settings you find it important to use ?
And please tell me, what is the main reason one cannot live without this app ?
Is it that "google now" swipe thing that is a must ? for instance if you inside a app lets say KIK
you can swipe to get to the apps more quickly ? ¨
Besides that I am not sure I see a point of it, besides that you can swipe thru a lot of apps more faster not needing to go thru many sides..
If you are rooted, you can get governor tweaking apps like Trickstermod. Set-up "Performance" as your governor and make the phone's governors ramp up to max frequency when running tasks eliminating lags at the expense of a bit of battery life. But if you don't really play a lot of games the battery trade-off won't be that big.
I want to add the app twilight to the list.
A must have also player with superior audio quality is Aimp

Pie update memory leak? + pie experiences

Is anyone noticing any strange memory behavior since the pie update?
Today I saw my free memory under the recents screen drop to 400mb
Not sure if the update lets the P20 pro better utilize it's 6gb but I was not doing anything out of the ordinary
I'm running lawn chair launcher (latest play store version) and everything else is stock
Also I've noticed that Android now uses 1.9-2.5 gb ram
Looking forward to see what you all experience
Actually using memory is not a memory leak.

i suggest you to install magisk and install swap torpedo module as well,
on our 6GB system, memory swap will only causing lag. especially if there is any app that havent fully optimised for android pie leaking memory, triggering the system to do paging
So, we should not take free memory into consideration

This is true but I'm emui 9 on honor play and it now kills rocket player (music player) when it's playing music in the background and there's no way to protect apps from this. 400megs free? Show me where the ram is being used where the recent tasks list is empty.

That's the default for all apps.
Seems that this was due to the swipe left for Google now in lawn chair
Turned it off... Looks like lots of ram for cache now

using auto meaning system can decide to override the setting when it feel needed, thus it still killable if you left it as auto

No, I previously tried manual, plus I just tried it again now. It makes sense that there's no difference as by opting for manual control but leaving the 3 options the same as before why would one expect different behaviour. I think the fact that this option is located in the battery option's page demonstrates that this is about limiting how apps are launched, so as to save battery. What I want is the opposite - keep an app in memory no matter what. The music player is playing music as a background task, so it's being treated like a browser you've not used for 4 hours. I want an app which is playing music in the background to be treated like an app where the UI is visible and never, ever, ever killed for any reason. There are no settings which allow you to do this. Furthermore, it's annoying that the phone is showing 777megs of ram free. Something is using the other 3.3 gigs of ram but on no screen can I find any figures which I can sum to get close to this value, so it's like the OS itself is using it as a cache. Fine, no point in not using ram, but it seems that with the launcher showing (ie no apps have the display) it has the full ram available for background tasks.
The only other thing I could try is to not use nova launcher. I'm not confident this would make any difference, and even if it did I don't like the idea that I have to choose between a decent UI or the ability to play music.

you can do that by modifying some .xml in sysconfig folder,
normally we remove whitelist from the xml, but what you would want to do is to adding it instead

Thanks for the help (though it's sort of vague - change which .xml file how?). I guess I need root for that, which I've no interest in at the mo.
I've found what might be the setting I'm after, so I'll try for a while both with that setting and with the stock launcher. If I have no problems for a week or so I'll try with that setting and nova launcher. The setting is Settings/Apps/Apps/Special Access/Battery Optimisation/(select an app here - in my case Rocket Player)/Don't Allow.

Android pie made multi tasking worse ?

After updated to pie, it seems if i try run 2 apps and switch between them it will quickly kill the other while i use the other? before i didnt have this problem it seems to be more agressive now kill apps in the background.. can i do anything about it or not ? I mean if i look how much ram is available its like 900mb, that should be plenty enough to run 2 apps in background no ?
I don't have this. Maybe some setting on your phone or battery saver?
I also have the feeling Pie keeps more reserved or free RAM than Oreo... I constantly have like 1Gb free or more...
Free RAM has no meaning. Multitasking is good and more fluid now on 9.
