Pie update memory leak? + pie experiences - Huawei P20 Pro Guides, News, & Discussion

Is anyone noticing any strange memory behavior since the pie update?
Today I saw my free memory under the recents screen drop to 400mb
Not sure if the update lets the P20 pro better utilize it's 6gb but I was not doing anything out of the ordinary
I'm running lawn chair launcher (latest play store version) and everything else is stock
Also I've noticed that Android now uses 1.9-2.5 gb ram
Looking forward to see what you all experience

Actually using memory is not a memory leak.

i suggest you to install magisk and install swap torpedo module as well,
on our 6GB system, memory swap will only causing lag. especially if there is any app that havent fully optimised for android pie leaking memory, triggering the system to do paging

So, we should not take free memory into consideration

This is true but I'm emui 9 on honor play and it now kills rocket player (music player) when it's playing music in the background and there's no way to protect apps from this. 400megs free? Show me where the ram is being used where the recent tasks list is empty.

That's the default for all apps.

Seems that this was due to the swipe left for Google now in lawn chair
Turned it off... Looks like lots of ram for cache now

No, I previously tried manual, plus I just tried it again now. It makes sense that there's no difference as by opting for manual control but leaving the 3 options the same as before why would one expect different behaviour. I think the fact that this option is located in the battery option's page demonstrates that this is about limiting how apps are launched, so as to save battery. What I want is the opposite - keep an app in memory no matter what. The music player is playing music as a background task, so it's being treated like a browser you've not used for 4 hours. I want an app which is playing music in the background to be treated like an app where the UI is visible and never, ever, ever killed for any reason. There are no settings which allow you to do this. Furthermore, it's annoying that the phone is showing 777megs of ram free. Something is using the other 3.3 gigs of ram but on no screen can I find any figures which I can sum to get close to this value, so it's like the OS itself is using it as a cache. Fine, no point in not using ram, but it seems that with the launcher showing (ie no apps have the display) it has the full ram available for background tasks.
The only other thing I could try is to not use nova launcher. I'm not confident this would make any difference, and even if it did I don't like the idea that I have to choose between a decent UI or the ability to play music.

you can do that by modifying some .xml in sysconfig folder,
normally we remove whitelist from the xml, but what you would want to do is to adding it instead

Thanks for the help (though it's sort of vague - change which .xml file how?). I guess I need root for that, which I've no interest in at the mo.
I've found what might be the setting I'm after, so I'll try for a while both with that setting and with the stock launcher. If I have no problems for a week or so I'll try with that setting and nova launcher. The setting is Settings/Apps/Apps/Special Access/Battery Optimisation/(select an app here - in my case Rocket Player)/Don't Allow.

[Q] Stock launcher frequently crashes

Hey guys,
I'm not exactly sure on how I should look this up, so I'm sorry if this isn't new.
It's been a while now, actually, nearly since I got the NS, or since I loaded it with apps. I'm running stock everything, 4.1.1.
My problem is: I get frequent crashes of my (stock) launcher, when using an app and tap on the home button. It's more noticeable on a screen that has widgets, because they take a while to appear and to load the content again. But no error windows, just like if the process shuts down when I'm using an app.
I'm almost sure it's a memory management problem, in fact, I don't even know how NS runs JB so well. In this case, I guess there isn't much to do.
Is this a frequent issue? Do you recommend anything? Any alternative launcher that performs as well as the stock and consumes less ram? Any settings that would improve the memory management?
Thanks in advance,

That's not a crash. It's commonly referred as launcher redraw, and it happens when the launcher is released from the RAM because the RAM is needed for something else. Happens somewhat often with Jellybean on the Nexus S because its meager 512MB of RAM has a hard time coping with user apps + system apps running in the background. Other than making sure as little apps as possible run in the background, there's not much to do.
Most alternative launchers will consume more RAM, so that's not really a solution in itself.

Backround app problem.HELP

I have an Honor 8,chinese version FRD-AL00.(rooted)
The problem is everytime i clear the memory the phone kills the app completely. Ex- the app "messenger" or "whats app" , if i clear them from memory (clear ram on multitask window) i no longer recieve notifications.I have to always leave them opened on the backround.I also tried removing them from battery optimization and it didnt work.

Man, I am living with this problem for more than half a year. I did find a somewhat tolerable solution - it is not exactly elegant but it might prove helpful. So yes, after playing with every possible parameter in settings , I also came to the conclusion that nothing really helps except keeping these apps minimized in the background. So I decided to just find a way to hide these minimized apps from the "recent apps" so that these don't interfere with my other activity.
Finally, I managed to find one humble app which does exactly that (you won't be able to find it by the name in Google Play, hence I provide the link).
play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=comapede.app.versteckeapp
The instructions might not be exactly clear - you have to install the app then access the widgets from your home screen, identify the Hide App widget and drag it on the home screen. At this point you will be presented with the list of all apps on your device and you would need to chose the app you want to hide. After doing so, a widget for this specific app would be created (which looks identically to the app icon but works differently). First, make sure you discard the respective app from the recent apps, then, to enable hiding, every time you launch the app, you need to do it from the created widget (not from the icon). Obviously, you can repeat the action for all other apps you need to hide.
This worked reliably with Nova Launcher on Android 7 (EMUI 5.0) and continues to work after updating to Android 8 (EMUI 8.0). I also have Chinese ROM (not rooted).
As for the reason why this happens - I have no clue. I don't exclude that it is a software bug that is quite rare on honor 8 devices (otherwise I would see more people complaining).
There is an interesting aspect though - while I have been using my FB messenger for a while like this (this was the only way it worked), now I am able to access the app from its native icon and discard it from the recent apps and it still receives messages instantaneously (same about Skype, Viber). (I don't remember if this is related to the update). Yet for other apps, like KinScreen, Light Flow, ACR (Automatic Call Recorder) and many others, if I run the apps from their icons, the moment I discard them from recent apps, they are shut down completely.
Hopefully this works out for your

Yes, this can be really frustrating. For me it has been a series of missed Skype calls, which I happened to discover even after more than a week.

Poor RAM Management on OnePlus 6 6GB RAM

It frequently reloads apps and I'm using stock OxygenOS 5.1.11 but I have been facing this issue in previous versions too. It doesn't even hold 5 apps in memory and redraws few apps every time out of these 5. When I open the Camera app, every app reloads. I'm very dissatisfied with this poor RAM management while my Redmi Note 3 performs better in this category
I'm not sure how many apps mine holds in background, but it's alot. Not sure how many days.. But more than one..
Are you sure you don't have any battery saving apps? I know greenify kills background apps as an example.
I don't have any battery saving apps. My phone is rooted with magisk and it's having an unlocked bootloader. I'm feeling very bad with my phone's performance.
Mine too. But I still don't face this issue.
Do you have the same 6GB RAM variant?
8gb here. 6gb shouldn't be that bad I feel :s
It's worse than a budget mobile
I am sure you can sell it for a good.price and get a budget mobile instead... (I also had a redmi note 3 - and for me the two phones do not compare at all. The redmi is ok - but it is much inferior in all aspects)
Personally I am very pleased with the phone and have no ram issues whatsoever
I use greenify and I regularly (by choice) dump all apps and I still have a very fast experience . Why does it bother you? Does it make your phone slow(er)?

what mods do you have installed and are you a lite, median, heavy user.
For me, i'm a lite user with less then 80 apps installed. One charge for me last between 3 to 5 days. Thats on Pie beta 2 as well.
Medium user, I generally switch between Instagram, WhatsApp, Facebook, Reddit and Gmail. Surprisingly these reload everytime. My battery lasts a full day on LTE.
OOS definitely kills background apps regardless of the available memory.
Go to battery optimization, select the app which you need to keep running in the background, and selct Don't optimize. You shall be able to disable optimization for user apps only(system apps won't be listed).
[Update] I have disabled advanced optimisation and dirty flashed OOS Rom and voila, OnePlus 6 is the speed you need!

Settings - Battery - Battery optimization - (3 dots on the top right) - Advanced optimization
Settings - Advanced - Recent app management
I was having similar issues until I figure out these settings. Was using Nexus/Pixel/HTC before and they don't have such aggressive background controls.
Some apps don't behave well and keep waking up, so I do understand the point of these controls. Personally I choose to do it by my self using apps like Brevent/Greenify so I have more controls.

Honor 10 LAG here and there after 9 pie update

Some lag in:
scrolling lost calls and calls (very huge lag)
swipe left notifications
swipe right a menu (note application for example)
graphical glitch when exit from software and hardware battery usage
scrolling app notification menu
Most of them gone with performance mode, but none of these was in 8.1, so I reverted back.
Anyone notice these lags?
Hi,
You are not alone. I had the same problems.
Which I did was disable some Huawei system apps including the launcher after installing Nova launcher and Fluid navigation gestures.
Follow this thread for list of app, but remember to see this one for safety. Disabling apps is much safety than uninstalling them.
After doing that, the lag has been almostly gone. You will come back to Android Oreo style multitasking cards and maybe can not use the ultra power saving mode. And, with an option in Fluid now your fingerprint also works as a home button (you still can use the scan function). I choose the option to run app from lockscreen, it helps hide permanently the navigation bar (before that it takes part of second), however the lockscreen clock will be cut parly at bottom.

Everything is more fluid than before. Applications starts faster and operates faster. Not experienced any lag since the change. Before that, I had a lot. Never ran any benchmark ever, so I cannot say anything about that.

and yes, its a bit more fluid. how much? I dunno....its just a feeling, no benchmark or any other measurement.

Apps get killed/refreshed

guys, I have an issue here
mine is 6GB ram of 7 Pro
I open only two apps in background, when I switch to another app, the app just refreshed, meaning it was killed, why is that so?
Now I can't multitask because I can barely open few apps and keep it running in background
I'm on latest open beta 1 though
Even when I'm on stable OxygenOS I feel the same issue, anyone ?
Go to settings, developer option and running services
My system shows 3.6GB to around 4GB usage, so much ?

Set the apps you want running to don't optimize.
Are you on Android Q?
Because there you have to give it some time to adapt to your usage pattern, so that it will make sure your apps are loaded when you usually use them. Worked good for me after a few days.
If you still want to turn off battery optimization:
1. Disable advanced optimization under battery settings.
2. Set your apps to "Don't optimize" in the battery settings.
3. Lock them in the recents menu.
