It seems my battery is draining somewhere between 6-10% per hour and I can't for the life of me figure out what is causing the drainage. I've been using the BetterBatteryStats and GSam Battery apps to try and narrow down what the culprit is to no avail.
Below are some screen shots from my phone use today - most important I think is that it's been 9h 37m since I unplugged, in that time the phone was in deep sleep for 7h 49m, and awake for 1h 48m, but the screen was on only for 54m out of that 1h 48m awake time. So it appears for today's sample size that something is keeping my phone from going into deep sleep for an extra 54 minutes, twice the amount of time the screen is actually on.
Often I find that the biggest offenders in the GSam Batty "Time Held Awake" and "Num Times Waking Device" tracking are Android System and Maps. This seems odd to me because I'll see Maps as the offender even when I haven't used the app all day. For example, today I haven't used Maps at all and yet it is listed as #3 on the "Num Times Waking Device" at 79 times.
Any thoughts on how I can investigate further? Any tips or tricks are greatly appreciated.
1 - Are you in an LTE area or get sporadic LTE service?
2 - Do you take the subway or travel frequently to an area that is a dead spot?
If you can say yes to both of these questions, welcome to the club.

It's a problem that unfortunately hasn't gotten the attention it deserves. Hopefully that changes soon.

Ah yes, my situation seems very similar. I'm travelling a lot so I'm often in areas without LTE, you'll also see in my screen shots that I'm often without 4g signal.
And YES, my phone gets VERY HOT. I've seen GSam report battery temps close to 108-110 degrees. I haven't been able to figure out if quitting apps brings the temp down or if it's just waiting out whatever is driving the temp up. My phone gets up over 100 degrees very easily when I've been using it for 10 minutes or more. Sometimes it cools down after I stop using it, other times it stays hot for a while longer - it's getting very annoying.

I've started a new thread over at General about this issue. My guess is that now that this phone is in stock everywhere, more people should experience this issue. It's a major issue. I can get by because I only lose service on the subway so I turn airplane mode on and off, but I can only imagine the nightmare it must be for someone who travels a lot.

Yea, and I should have mentioned that I'm completely stock, no root, custom rom, etc. I'm holding out for Kernel source & a more stable release from HTC as a base for custom roms before I head down that road.
Hi everyone,
I'm about a week-long user of the M8 so far, and I'm loving it. I've been a fairly long time HTC user as well - I started with the Ozone, then fell back to a feature phone until I picked up the Incredible 2, which lasted for a long time.
At any rate, I'm no stranger to hot phones, literally. During my commute back and forth to work, I would use my Inc. 2 to record the drive with Dailyroads Voyager, while simultaneously monitoring road conditions with Waze. My good old Inc. 2 would power through those tasks like a boss, while at the same time burning up, and usually unable to pull enough power from the car USB charger. The only way to keep my phone stable was by running my car's defroster to blow cold air over the phone.
Now that I'm up to date hardware-wise, the M8 is no exception in the power house category. It can even keep charging while it's doing these things, although it does still get pretty warm. It's currently in a protective case which seems to dissipate the heat pretty well.
My question is, how warm do you guys let your M8 get? (Note: I'm rooted, but still running stock with no sort of overclocking involved.)
The only time I've ever had heat issues was when I mounted the phone to use as gps. And this was under direct 90 degree heat. Other than that, I've had no problems with heat whatsoever, even on prolonged lte usage and video watching.
My experience might be isolated though. I'd say, if your phone is uncomfortably hot to touch, you should probably ease up on it to be safe.

Yeah, always with the GPS navigation it seems. I wonder if this is something that can be fixed software wise (I.E filling a bug report to Waze/DRV), or if it's more on HTC's end for software/hardware...
I would assume it was just the metal body absorbing direct sunlight but I might be wrong. My HTC rezound used to double as a portable heater the way it used to get hot with extended usage. This one doesn't seem to be like that though.
Usually only heats when running tether for a period.

That's been my experience from the Inc 2, as well. So it seems like the mobile radio may generate quite a bit of heat...
I recently accidentally let my M8 get too hot while listening to music with it laying in direct sunlight face up. Didn't think about the black screen absorbing so much heat, got so hot it went into safety shut-off. It was almost too hot to touch, but after a couple minutes off it was relatively cool and turned back on fine with no problems or battery issue.
Low 40s Celsius is when I start to get uncomfortable. It's still safe, I just simply don't like it that warm. I get mad when my OC'd Intel cpu hits 60c even though 75+ is fine. I'm just anal about temps I guess

My Car mount clips onto the AC vents so my phone is always cool (I block some of the air through. Too cold isn't good either(

I agree that the only time (and it was only once) my unit got hot was while I was using it in its car mount and GPS was on. Otherwise I have seen none of the heart issues that plagued my Rezound and my Incredible.
My name's Harold and I'm a flashaholic....

If you're rooted, install XPosed and than install "CPU Temp in StatusBar" to keep really good track of the temps. Mine doesn't ever get over 110F, even under hard WiFi and streaming use. I've never used it for GPS in the car. At idle, it sits under 80F.

Thank you, I've been looking for a CoreTemp-like feature for my phone. I'll give this a try!
I've been hammering on my new m8 (swapping roms, installing massive amounts of apps, running tests, playing games ) for over a day and the phone has never gotten beyond lukewarm. Nothing close to what my m7 used to do
I never look at the temp. It will auto throttle if it gets too hot anyway. Just use the phone how you want and don't worry about it...
Well, I gave the temp monitoring thing a try (very cool!) and I don't think my phone ever passed 65 degrees Celsius, which I guess is ok. So no worries it seems!

My phone has been a lot lately, but only because of using the GPS, whether it's Google Maps or Waze. It gets warm over time if I'm just browsing through the internet or check social media. I take long drives to place to place often, but it gets annoying when it starts to overheat. I do charge it while I use the GPS, I put the brightness up to about half way so I can see the map, and I use a windshield mount for the phone. It hasn't gotten to the point where it overheats where I can't charge it or crashes. The hottest it has gotten to is between 115-125 F. Is there a way for it to keep it cooled down? I'm using the CarbonROM if that helps out.

first off, are you talking about cpu temps or battery temp? for cpu, 115-125F is relatively cool. it overheats at 105C(221F).

ok, 125F is a little warm for the battery, but still within the safe range. if your battery reaches 60C, which would be extremely rare, your phone will automatically power off(to cool off), as that is a safety feature to protect the battery from overheating.

yup. technically its fine at that point as well(for short periods of time), but thats the point googles developers decided to be safe with. the only time i get my battey really hot is when im plugged in and playing a cpu intensive game or plugged in and streaming a movie. but that doesnt bother me, as in those situations it reaches the cpu safety limit of 105C(i disable thermal throttle, the first cpu temp safety) way before the battery gets too hot
Hi,
Sorry to bother you, but could you tell me if your replacement Nexus 5 battery has a varied temperature?
I mean if the temperature goes up to 35 Celsius when it's charging or you're playing games, of if it goes down to 25 when it's idle.
Because my replacement battery always stays at 29 degrees Celsius, no matter how I use the phone.
I think mine might be bad, but I want to check with someone else before buying another one.
The temperature is the same in all the apps: GSam, CPU-Z, secret Android settings menu.
Completely stock system, OTA 5.0.1.
Thanks.
There isn't anyone that has changed their N5 battery in this forum?
I just want to know what is their battery temperature. Thanks.

All apps show the same value because they read battery stats from the same place. Have you tried restarting or clearing /cache? Because what you're saying physically impossible.

It is possible if the sensor is either broken (improbable) or a dummy ( 10k resistor )
Yes, this might be the case.
Like I said, I use now a replacement battery, and it might have a broken sensor or a dummy sensor..
This is why I asked about other people's replacement batteries, how are they reporting the temperature ?
Are there replacement batteries that report correctly the temperature ?

Don't worry about battery temperature unless it somehow goes over 60C, which is extremely unlikely as there is a battery temperature throttle in the kernel unless you specifically went and disabled it. The CPU will almost always throttle before the battery reaches such temperatures anyways.

I have the exact same behavior with my newly replaced battery.
Where did you bought it?
I did bought mine on ebay from this seller http://www.ebay.fr/itm/311164295976?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649
I hope this is not a fake thermal sensor... maybe it is because the battery is new and not fully "activated"?
Sounds like you guys bought non OEM replacement batteries that have left the sensor out to save money.
What is realy confusing me is that after 1 full cycle the battery shows very good results :
- SOT 5h10min!
- I did run at least 5 Antutu full tests
- chrome web surfing
- downloaded nearly 5Gb of data
- 1 hour gps maps
and still 28% left!
But the temp sensor doesnt work :crying:
I wonder how dangerous it could be since system has a wrong reading of the real battery temp.
If someone knows how android manage phone state when reading high batt temp...
Does it shut down it? or anything that protect it against explode

Relax, there's a hi temp shutdown which will shut down your device if it gets too hot. There's also an explosion door on the back of your device that'll relieve pressure if it gets too high, jk.

High temp shutdown based on what reading? As far as I know Nexus 5 has only 2 temp sensors avaible : CPU and battery.
If the battery sensor reading is wrong, I wonder how the phone can shut down since CPU temp can remain cool while battery is getting warmer and warmer.
The device is getting uncomfortably hot especially around the ear piece and the entire device get hot too. Anyone experience this.

Everything good on my end as well..
I was just going to post the same issue, because it happened to me today, after 2 weeks of using the phone. The unit became so uncomfortable to hold due to heat that I had to turn the phone off completely. At that time the phone was playing music file over Samsung music app, message on the screen popped up stating System UI not responding and when I opened the phone only home screen apps were displayed, all other app icons disappeared, all other pages were empty. Trying to open any app was impossible, touch screen was not responding. I am little bit worried. The battery was at 27% at 4 pm in the afternoon, I have removed the phone from charger in the morning at 7:30 am. Normal usage during the day, nothing abnormal.
I've noticed heat on the back of the phone but it isn't alarming. I've considered factory resetting it if it worsens but it hasn't really.
You guys may want to get a replacement unit if anything. No excuse considering the price and no variance of Socks.
What firmware are you guys running?
Heating is quite subjective, so it would be better if we give Battery and CPU temperatures here.
My average CPU temp is 31 degrees Celsius and Battery Temperature is about 28. The maximum CPU Temp has risen is 36 and battery max. has been 33.
I suppose, till 40 degrees Celsius there is nothing to worry. If temperature gets close/above to 45, then the situation gets alarming.
My phone though feels warm many times .

I have 5 of Fold 2"s with my friends and sixth is mine. All are experiencing slight overheating.
If you check the web, this issue seems to be quite common.
Try a master reset and maybe this goes away. I did not experience any overheating till day before yesterday, but i installed a lot of apps. yesterday, so it could be a rouge application.
I would do a master reset tonight.

I know a Samsung Technician and i just spoke to him on Fold 2 heating up. He says for Snapdragon 865 " CPU temperature of less than 60 degrees celsius when gaming. & when mobile is doing small processes or in an idle state, max around 45 celsius is not an issue. Also for 865+, this limit has been enhanced by approximately 5 to 10%.
I also read this, though pretty old -
