High Refresh Rate Mod - Sony Xperia XZ3 Guides, News, & Discussion

I just saw an article that mentioned a mod for the Xiaomi MI 9 that allegedly unlocks a higher refresh rate for the display (84 Hz). So naturally I was wondering, is there a way to do something similar with the XZ3? The displays have pretty much the same specs.

If i remember correctly all SODP supported xperias have a 120hz display running in 60hz (?) on stock and sodp.
I don't know if all of these have the hardware power to support it, but there are people working in it at the sodp project, so sodp based custom ROMs can support it.
But please don't ask for an ETA
the stock firmware is a different story I can't answer.

That's great news then, thanks! And I would never ask for an ETA

XZ3 is probably different from the Xperias preceding it as it has an OLED screen. The 120Hz Xperias have an LCD screen.

The Xperia 1 has a 120 Hz display as well (confirmed), and it's OLED.

Yeah, I don't remember that the xz3 has no 120hz display.
It should have one too.

Playing games that support 120hz with game enhancer still doesn't feel any smoother than scrolling through the settings etc

It's of the screen refresh rate not the app, go look at the xz prem forums for the 120hz mod for example
Same thing happens year after year and someone says it can do 120hz. Sony won't support this and have said this. Unless someone can prove its 120hz. Especially on 4k screen and small battery.....

he had made a tournament with the Xperia 1 before its release to show the advantage of 21: 9 and 120hz for compatible games. I think it is the application settings for example with aida64 I have a resolution of 4k for the screen because the application is in 4k I think for the refraichissement of the screen is the same if the application does not offer 120hz native you will not have it

If you think 120hz based on battery performance then it's not 120hz. You would clearly see the device being smoother.
Sony hasn't said it supports 120hz. You would think 4k at 120hz is better for advertising the phone than just 4k.... I welcome someone to prove this wrong.
As soon as one person says it 120hz others jump on and start spreading it.

120 Hz is not available in 4k it is Normal that it does not communicate on it, only in 2k and Sony is one of the companies that communicates the least about the features, it's a rpg the difference is not obvious but since the game supports a refresh of 120 Hz it can not be that the other rpg I play does not consume as much and they are all 60fps. when the characteristics is zackbugs who had published an image is still him who shows the photos of smartphones 6 months before their release not the kind of people told anything

Game supports 120hz but Xperia 1 doesn't. As I said earlier one person says it the rest follow.
RPG or not RPG you would be able to tell the difference between 120hz and 60hz.
Sony would advertise 120hz just as much as they would as 4k as it would be a key selling point. They've also said they went with battery life over 120hz

it is not me who said it was on the site Asian Sony does not ask me which one. it would surprise me strongly that only the Asian versions take into account that, it will not release the top because it would need compatibility only with the game 2k / 120 Hz and 100% compatible with the game optimizer so only a very small minority of titles it has no interest to release the top if it concerns only 3 titles on millions. and all high-end Sony have a screen 120 Hz x1 does not deviate from the rule. we will talk about it in 1 years when the mod will come out. Sony will never offer to change the refresh of the screen just as it does not propose to change the screen resolution. Short end of the debate we'll talk when a mod out and yes on the RPG 60 or 120 FPS hardly change anything, there is too little movement to realize a few things. it is only useful for the game (type of shooting with fast movement that you will see a difference)
120hz with daily use?
Battery life from 6 soc to 3.
Nope.
I dont know maybe it doesnt...
Sorry for reviving an old thread, but yesterday I decided to try CoD Mobile on my Xperia 1 and it runs great except for a slight snag, it doesn't fill the whole screen. There are 3 thin black bars on the bottom and the sides of the image, as if the display resolution is a bit lower than the screen and instead of fitting the image to the screen it just goes top-center.
Anyone else have this experience with CoD Mobile? My Xperia 1 is fully updated to the latest firmware, and from older videos on youtube it seems like the image should fill up the whole screen. Can anyone with experience clarify?

The Android 10 full screen navigation broke the full screen support for some games on 21:9 display. The only way I know to temporarily solve this issue is to change to three buttons home navigation before you launch the game. This will annoy people who has a lot of icons in Home because they will be shifted when you switch in between of both navigation modes.

Any way for 90hz refresh mod?

Is there any possible way to install 90hz refresh mod ( present in Oneplus 7t ) on our Oneplus 7 ?
Is our OP7 supports that?
I saw some xiaomi flagships has such mods installed but why not in OP7 till now?
Any good reason?
Does it has anything to do with Fluid Amoled display?
Nonsense, it's hardware related, op7 screen only capable 60hz

Do you know how to do it? Any links or posts or topics ?
There are quite a few 60hz refresh rate phones that can use the 90hz refresh rate. Currently I have not found a way to open the 90hz refresh rate on Oneplus 7. I tried this app to turn on the 90hz refresh rate, because Oneplus 7 has no DTBO, it has not been successfully opened 90hz. But this is not due to hardware.
I request any developer to develop a mod for 90hz refresh rate for our op7 or provide a process to do so that i will test on my phone..
I'm pretty sure there's a way to increase the refresh rate.
What we'll need to find out, when a Dev actually looks into that, is how stable is it, and by how much? And will it be convenient enough (battery, durability).
I really hope that the screen is actually as good as OP7T
Any news about that?

The app has been updated, but it still does not work for OnePlus 7.
There are many factors here.
For example: Mi 9 uses an 85Hz panel underclocked to 60Hz, that's the reason why this type of mods can easily enable this feature without any side effects (Ignoring the extra energy consumption of course), I don't know how Redmi K20/Mi9T screen is, but I assume it will be something similar.
Another important thing to keep in mind: OnePlus uses command-mode to control the panel (this method precludes any external modification that is attempted over the panel controller) while Xiaomi for some strange who-knows-reason uses video-mode (If I'm not wrong, Xiaomi is the only manufacturer that uses this method in high-end devices with OLED panels), and basically this method facilitates modifications to the the different dtbo's/panel controllers.
I don't want to break anyone's hopes, but currently I don't think anyone outside Samsung has the ability to change the refresh rate of this panel, these screens were strongly designed to work this way and only in this way.

Should I get a Pixel 3a after a Sony Compact?

Hello, I have different questions on this device and I would be really thankfull if someone can answer at some of them.
I come from xperia xz2 compact which overall is great but app side looks outdate. No gesture system and sony apps are the same of two years ago.
I know the Pixel is bigger but I don't see any real alternative now. So here come my questions...
It's my first OLED. Is it true that they not last as long as LCD? I hope to use this phone for 2 years at last.
Does this pixel get all the updates and features of newer pixels? All base apps get updated?
Can I disable some of the google apps like I do on other phones?
Can I remove the google search on home or the pixel launcher is not giving me choice?
Does the kernel get higher over time or like other phones it get stuck on the release one?
Is there anything weird about pixel that you don't usually get on other phones?
Yeah I know that the cpu is a downgrade. But maybe I care more to get fresh software.
Thank you so much if you spend time to give me some hint.

I've been using this smartphone for 6 months now and my previous one was a Sony Xperia XZ2 , so it's basically the same situation as yours.
I always loved Sony smartphones and I keep doing it, but Pixels are on a totally different level, I would suggest the upgrade.
Anyway, to answer to your questions:
-It's my first OLED too, but I doubt it will last less than 2 years
-Yes it does, unless they are exclusive of newer models (Pixel 4). Since the launch of Pixel 4 they already ported to the 3a Astrophotography, Live Captions, Styles personalizations, etc.. But Google said that they are not going to bring for example other things like the contrast slider for photo shoots, which remains a Pixel 4 exclusive
-Yes
-The google search bar is integrated into the launcher, you should change launcher in order to get rid of it
-I didn't check the version over the updates, but at the moment is 4.9.185
-Nothing weird, IMHO is a powerful device with a great price

That kernel version is the initial android 10 kernel. So they maybe update only on new android big versions.
Would you say that the screen quality is good compared compared to xz2? Can colors be natural? I'm using professional colors on mine.

Well, to be honest I consider the two displays almost on the same level, cause the xz2's LCD was way better than any other LCD I've seen around.
The 3a OLED is very good for its price, but under strong sunlight it may struggle to be visible.

Regarding the display, it's really is not very bright, but custom kernels (e.g. ElementalX, I think) can provide a high brightness mode for direct sunlight.
If you want a really long in-depth review, xda's Dylan Raga has written a display review, but there's also a quick overview as Pros and Cons.
For other users' opinions, there is always the Real Life Review forum section to check out, it also has a display section.
Personally I also use the Natural profile. It seems bland at first compared to Adaptive (default setting), because it's not slightly oversaturated, but given Natural is more accurate, I'm quite happy without the additional color pop.

Thanks. That article is really intersting. But what is scaring me now about OLED is that often people get headache since the screen flickers.

Camera (and flash, which was ridiculous on the xperia) and audio are two of the main reasons.
Also battery is a huge improvement to me, cause I use to cover about 5 hours of SOT with the XZ2, now I get up to 7.
The only thing I miss is Dynamic Vibration, it was such a nice feature

This is news to me, so I did some research.
In case it's also news to someone else, these frequencies aren't related to display refresh rate, which flagship nowadays increase above 60hz.
From what I understand (as a layman) it's basically modulating the current or voltage to an average by switching the supply on and off within that frequency, effectively controlling brightness.
I can't say I did experience headaches or eye strain, so I might not be the best person to answer this, but I usually use my phones' display quite dim. Shouldn't the frequency decrease and make flickering more noticeable (more waves and longer intervals being off)? Maybe I'm getting it wrong though.
What also caught my attention in your linked table is how many other popular phones sit around these lower frequencies, and only one iPhone ranks slightly higher than the 3a. There are LCDs as well, maybe it's not limited to OLED. But there surely is someone more knowledgeable than me.
Just a quick review. The screen is not even comparable with the xz2c. It feels cheap. But the worst part is the view angle. If you are not in front of the screen the colors really change a lot. And you tend to see the colors changing while you use the phone. ?
You get used to it though. Is just weird if you compare them.
If the screen is all black there is some fading lighter on some side.
On really low light I notice that as example, the keyboard have a shade color instead of being unique.
Night light is less warm.
I don't get stressed by eyes or mind looking at it.
The pixel launcher doesn't allow me to even disable the "ok google" voice detection. I'm considering to swap it. But not sure what will happen with the app switcher.
(if you don't use google at all you can disable the google app and this will disable voice detection while the search bar will be still there as just a picture doing nothing)
Everything else is fine. The phone feels really great in hand and is lighter. Charging is faster.
I'm noticing how feature that are missing versus pixel 4 are not all relevant to hardward or whatever. And some of them are nonsense. Like live wallpapers. So I'm not sure how much really updated the Pixel will stay in time versus another phone except security patches.
I just got used to the screen. And now looks just fine. Except the angle view but I don't care enough. Also the touch is so responsive.
I think this phone is amzing. Is all around balanced, the experience is fluid and clean. So handy and light. Also doesn't attract dust at all. Fast charge.
I'm enjoing display ambient always on, I never thought that could be a good thing but it's really nice.
I just forgot I'm using this phone, it just doesn't distract me.
I would not say photos are so much better in general but they are just a lot better in not perfect light condition.
Checked my screen for a few minutes. There is indeed a *slight* variation in colors when viewing at an angle, which is noticeable only on white backgrounds (and I am in dark mode
Screen should last much longer than 2 years: especially in the EU where legal warranty is 2y.

Yeah it's not that much. It was just the first sight. If you come from lcd for like your life, oled is really weird. But you get used to it really easy and after that it's great.
I hope it last. This phone is perfect for basic use.

Touch Sampling rate

Can anyone tell me what is the touch response for this phone. I aware that the screen refreshes at 120hz but need to know at what rate the touch is sampled at. If it samples at 60 then well that's disappointing.

Yeah as mentioned by Ya_Sg they did reveal it in the launch event as 120hz. They said that they doubled the touch polling, making it 120hz. That means Poco X2's display is basically similar to that of iPad Pro(2018) :silly::silly::silly:
Touch Multitest App shows that Poco X2 has 240Hz touch sampling rate

120hz and qhd

Do y'all think that the qhd display is capable of 120hz? Just I'm thinking that what if root could somehow enable this? If so I'm way behind but I'm just curious.
It probably is but the battery would be empty in ten minutes!
I think they disable it because it would probably give about 2 hours SOT! People would focus on that and complain like crazy. This device already has terrible battery life (for a flagship). Should have had a 7000 mah battery.

I see Kradcliffe and I answered at the same time with the same response!
So just watched a theory vid on that... The SD variants are capable but the exynos isn't... Rumored that this would create more lash towards exynos. The tab s7 also has the SD 865+ and runs 120hz at QHD... however the tab s7 only comes in SD
I think it's a hardware limit. Much like hdmi 2.0 can run 1440p at 120hz but only 4k at 60.

Do y'all think that the qhd display is capable of 120hz? Just I'm thinking that what if root could somehow enable this? If so I'm way behind but I'm just curious.

Thought I read Samsung was working on optimizing the software for qhd 120hz so it wasn't such a battery hog. The display is capable it just eats battery. The impression I got from the article was if they get the software optimized enough for decent battery life we could see the option to enable it come in future updates.
I read somewhere that to use QHD and 120z there is an additional screen layer or element for the screen that was seen in the OnePlus 8 pro that has both. The ultrasonic fingerprint reader may have an issue with this while the optical sensor does not.

This true but the tab s7 with the same fingerprint can achieve this

Yes sure in adaptive mode...... currently @dr.ketan is testing the mod on his rom as option in Tweak pro.
It will be released for Tweak pro users :good::good::good::good::good:
On oneplus 8 pro with wqhd samsung amoled display i had all the time 120hz with no issues and a sot over 6-8h @4500mA on OC SmurfKernel depending on usage.
Between SmurfKernel @pappschlumpf is also coming soon to SGN20Ultra exynos variant :good::good::good::good::good:
Stay tuned!
The great Devs are on it!!

I don't think the s7 has an in-display sensor, it's on the side.

So just watched a theory vid on that... The SD variants are capable but the exynos isn't... Rumored that this would create more lash towards exynos. The tab s7 also has the SD 865+ and runs 120hz at QHD... however the tab s7 only comes in SD

I think the same video has updated that Exynos is also capable of doing it. But I feel the battery would be **** on Exynos.
It's the Samsung firmware issues as it had too much bloatware and services in the background which causes all the battery drain in standby. You can see there is alot of app or services which we cant optimize it compare to other flagship
This one works with 120hz and qhd on note 20 ultra
Get 120hz Refresh rate with QHD for Galaxy Note 20 Ultra (thetecheaven.com)
Used qhd+ and 120hz on my prior device onerous 8 pro and SOT was over 5 hours not bad.
I still think it has to do with in-display sensor. All the screens with 120hz and QHD have optical. Samsung is the only one with ultrasonic and cannot do both.
