Firefox wont work without chrome? - Samsung Galaxy S10+ Themes, Apps, and Mods

So i just got my 10+ 2 days ago and immediately rooted it with magisk. For the past 2 days i have been working on customizing, debloating, and degooglefying it. So far i have removed almost all google apps as well as some samsung bloatware. I have also removed bixby and remapped the bixby button for other tasks...
However i have run into a peculiar issue; if i remove chrome none of my firefox browsers will work, with the exception of orfox... this includes firefox focus, firefox klar and icecat. Those browsers will open no problem but if i type anything into the URL bar and hit go/enter the browsers immediately close/crash. If i reinstall chrome, firefox browsers work without issues. If i force stop and disable chrome, firefox browsers work with no issues. I just cant uninstall chrome.
Im using debloat in magisk modules and im sure the browsers share some dependencies, however i have tried reinstalling firefox browsers after removing chrome and same problem.
Anyone else have this issue or does everyone else use chrome?

I am unrooted with chrome disabled, Firefox beta runs fine. Have you removed android webview too? Try the fenix preview it uses the new rendering engine?
Unrelated question, I used to use note 1 back in the day it had no knox so rooting was simple. Went the nexus/pixel way after that, and rooting on it was basically just pressing a button. Just moved from a pixel 1 to this s10+.
My usage of the root on the pixel had dropped to titanium backup and kernel for boosting it's low performance, could you please explain your use for root on s10? Also, if you want to use your warranty will you be able to?

Yea i currently have chrome disabled and firefox works fine, i just cant uninstall chrome without issues.
To answer your unrelated question, i am a long time linux user and am used to being free to change anything I want with nothing off limits. For the s10 i want to be able to tweak all the settings to my desires and only run the software that i use. I dont want bloatware that i dont use either running in the background or just taking up space.
And as far as i know, the method of root for the s10 line using magisk can be unrooted and bootloader can be relocked but that requires wiping everything and flashing stock firmware which should allow you to use your warranty. I dont actually have a warranty as i bought the international unlocked version and samsung factory warranty doesnt cover accidental physical damage which is the only thing i would ever use a warranty for.

It's because there is no alternative webview provider, or Android System Webview is broken. Check developer settings. I have to keep chrome installed for its webview provider and for some reason the built in Android System Webview is broken, even if I update it.

Thank you!!!
This solved my problem
So after I disabled chrome I verified webview provider switched to the android version and that firefox was working properly. I then uninstalled chrome, rebooted and same problem. After a little more research i found out that as long as the chrome webview providor was present and used, the android version will not update by itself. I manually went to the play store and updated it which is all it needed. Chrome is uninstalled completely, android webview is in use, and firefox is working properly.
I will report back if i discover any adverse side effects of running the android version rather than chrome.

Good stuff man, you're welcome haha. For some reason mine's permanently broken, although I don't mind leaving chrome installed.

AOSP Browser on Touchwiz 4.3?

I've been struggling to get the AOSP Browser to work properly on the new TW update. It installs and launches okay, but force closes upon pressing menu. I've tried side loading it in system/app (with a couple other dependencies) and installing Android Browser from the play store. Has anyone succeeded in doing this?
On the same note, I'm having a similar experience with installing Google Talk. It's a superior piece of software when compared to hangouts so I'd prefer to use the better option, but it too encounters issues upon being side loaded... Mainly, it cannot connect to my account upon opening.
Any information would be great. Thanks in advance!

isn't chrome the new aosp browser? Plus 4.3 has the old aosp browser pre installed (the one that has the globe as the icon).

Nope and not exactly.
Yes, it is known that Google has replaced the AOSP browser with Chrome, but the two are very different in their rendering engines and plugin support. Chrome likes to do a lot of weird things, like size up text randomly. It also doesn't support flash.
The browser that comes with 4.3 TW is closer to the AOSP browser, but has been massively reworked by Samsung. It can only hold open 16 tabs at a time and has caching issues which forces me to close it via task manager before it will start loading pages again.

Thank you for informing me on that! I use to love chrome but now that the aosp/TW edited asop browser syncs my chrome bookmarks I stay away from it.
Since no one seems to have a answer for you if you give me a market link or whatever link I'll see if I have the same problem.
Seems Google is abandoning support for what used to be the ASOP browser and Android 4.4 support for the old browser has lost some functionality because of built-in engine change from Webkit to Chromium.
Here is the market link: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=me.android.browser
Google's been making a number of questionable "improvements" to its app catalog that have resulted in a less user-friendly experience. New maps, Hangouts and Chrome are not as good as their predecessors. Hangouts and Maps specifically are quite laggy and buggy.
If they keep butchering their core apps then I'll probably start looking outside Android... I dunno... Despite these steps backward, Android is probably still the best option.

Laggy UI

I have only had this phone for about a week or so. When I turned it on, everything was smooth. Most of the ui elements became very laggy. I updated to android 11, and couldn't get edxposed working, but while trying to get it working.... everything was super smooth.
I reverted back to android 10, everything was smooth. Removed a bunch of google apps, and verizon apps still smooth. Installed magisk, reflashed boot image, installed EdExposed, a patcher to patch installing unsigned apk files, installed youtube vanced, removed the patcher, and the yt vanced installer.... Still smooth.
At some point randomly the next day.... lag city. It's particularly bad in stuff like the discovery feed where scrolling acts like it isn't cached and it lags, and the chat app. If I accidentally click the emoji face, it might take like 6 to 8 seconds before it becomes responsive.
I have fewer things installed on this phone than when I got it.
I haven't really seen many complaints about this, so I am wondering what's going on.
Now all my apps started crashing and the phone needs to be reset, probably reflashed. It's just a barrage of google apps force closing.

Running Android 11 stock (no hacks or patches) with all of my added apps and no problems at all.
So far stock 10 and Dirty Unicorns 14.7 have run the best for me. I'd hold off on the hacks for a bit untill everything picks up.
I flashed 10 again last night. The only difference is that instead of using the signature patcher I found something in EdExposed manager to run unsigned apk files. It's been good so far, If it stays good, I will just assume the patcher is malicious, and did something that set off a time bomb of sorts. It is a pretty shady app.
Ok, it's now a few hours later, and my lag has returned. I expect to be reflashing and setting this phone up again tomorrow night due to a cascade of gapps force closing.
I got it fixed. It was an app I never mentioned, because I didn't consider that it could cause this. Adblock Reborn.
As soon as disabled it and rebooted, everything was normal again.

Thank you for posting this
A friend came to me with a similar issue on his new Pixel 4a, so I jumped on XDA to see if anyone had a similar issue. After reading your post, it turns out that other ad blocker apps can cause this issue as well. He was running an old version of Adaway installed from the XDA Labs app. I updated it to the latest version of Adaway from here, and the problem is gone. He did not have this issue on Android 10, only after updating to Android 11. I would not have thought to check the ad blocker, so thanks again

Thank you too, because I installed the old version of adaway in place of adblock reborn. It is working fine at this point, and I am on 10. We will see how it goes.
FYI - No issues with AdGuard on Android 10 or 11; just works.

[HELP] Browser Hijacking / Malware

Hi everyone
Need some advice please, my phone (HUAWEI MATE 9, Android 9, Stock) has recently become the victim of some nasty browser hijacking / malware, where whenever i browse or just use my phone in general, the browser would open and random redirects to ad sites would occur.
At first i thought it was just Chrome, then i disabled it and downloaded FireFox, but the issue still occurs.
It also randomly happens with general usage, one moment you will be browsing your photo gallery, the next the browser launches and re-directs you to one of these ad sites, and is incredibly annoying.
I have not downloaded any dodgy apps or installed from apk's.
Things i have tried
- Ran Malwarebytes Scan = No issues found.
- Cleared Browsing history and cookies for Chrome.
- Installed a completely different browser.
- Disabled personalized Ads setting within my Google Account.
Any help advice to remove this will greatly appreciated, my phone is however not rooted and running stock firmware, and don't really want to resort to a factory reset.
Thanks in advance

Boot the device into safe mode and use it for a while in safe to see if the issue still occurs. If it does not have the issue while using safe mode, the issue is being caused by something that you installed. If it still continues to have the issue while using safe mode, the issue is being caused by something that was factory installed.

General Uninstalling Google Chrome slows phone to a crawl

It basically becomes completely unusable. Takes ages to boot and apps won't open. Fortunately I backed up the apk before uninstalling it, and was able to reinstall using adb. Rebooted after and it's completely back to normal.
Disabling/freezing Chrome seems to have no adverse effects.
Not impressed.
Yes, Chrome can behave very weird. I have somewhat better stability with Chrome Beta....
I just don't like that the Google ecosystem is forced on me. They collect too much data as it is without me also using their browser.

Sounds like it might have some dependencies that need it.
If it's screwing up boot, it's a bad sign that could degenerate into a boot loop. That wouldn't be pretty.
Try enabling Chrome but firewall block it which is what I do with Karma Firewall* with no adverse effects. Easy to access it if needed too.

I tried doing this same thing on the Verizon variant op8. Unlocked bl and stock Verizon a11 build. Broke rom completely. I'm on the global 9 now. But without an available msm tool I'm quite skeptical to do anything but just freeze unused apps through titanium.
You need to be sure you have a webview installed when you remove chrome. Either Android webview which is from Google or bromite. You can also try ungoogled chromium.
Mh, I froze Chrome via adb or titanium backup (it is always back on service after reboot) so I blocked it in addition via afwall...

Question Twitter-as-a-webapp via Firefox is unusable it's so slow

Hi everyone,
I use the Twitter app for one of my accounts, but since I like to quick-switch between them, I've resorted to using Firefox and I've installed a shortcut to the Twitter web page on my OnePlus 9 homescreen.
I know I could switch between accounts in the app itself, but I don't like it. I'd rather use two different apps, one for each of my Twitter accounts.
Problem is, unless I do two things I really, REALLY don't like (use the default system launcher AND use Chrome instead of Firefox), the user-experience of this setup is disastrous.
Scrolling up and down my timeline in the Firefox pinned shortcut is painfully slow, more often than not I have to tap a Like or Retweet button several times for the action to register, and generally speaking, it's no fun to use at all, regardless of the power setting I use.
I want to use Firefox because it has add-ons I like, such as uBlock Origin (bye-bye promoted tweets!) and NoScript, which, to my knowledge, can't be installed on any other Android Web browser (please correct me if I'm wrong).
Of course, it works flawlessly in Chrome or any other Chromium-based browser, but seeing all those promoted tweets just makes me nauseous...
(As for the default/system launcher, I just don't like it: the app drawer can't be customized worth a lick, and though it feels fast, it's just not my cup of tea.)
I've tried all the Android flavors of Firefox (stable, beta, Dev Edition), the result is the same.
Am I missing something here? Have you guys experienced the same issues, and if so, how did you solve them?
EDIT: I've installed Friendly for Twitter and it seems OK. Any users around to share feedback?

Thanks, but that is mean the phone has to be rooted?
I may have found the reason why it was so slow: I chose 1.1.1.1 as specified DNS (in fact it's "1dot1dot1dot1.com") and that must have messed up how Twitter works in Firefox, because right now, that shortcut on my homescreen works fine, albeit a bit more slowly than the Twitter app.
