Some apps not present in battery optimisation? - OnePlus 7 Pro Questions & Answers

As the title suggest, anyone else find that some apps just aren't available within the battery optimisation menu? For example, I have viper4android installed and when attempting to exclude it, it simply isn't listed there. Same with Google calendar too...

System apps don't show up there. You probably have installed viper4android as a system app.
That's OxygenOS standard.

That's a dam shame! I've not encountered this on other devices. I wonder if there's any workaround?

Hmm I do wonder if there's some way around this. I mean for example, the Universal Doze for GMS is a magisk module that allows hibernating a system app. Surely its possible to do the opposite and allow a system app not to be hibernated?
Hopefully some clever dev can work some magic here...

I'm using the one for Gmail I found in the 6t forums and it seem to be working pretty well. I've tested and I get my notification almost instantaneous.

I use bluemail, far superior to Gmail and works with Enterprise and exchange email servers and you have full control of it and you can add Gmail accounts as well. So I just freeze Gmail and never think about it again.

Also, can't you just move the app or if the system dinner and into the regular app folder and change the permissions then just omit from battery optimization? Not sure if Gmail works with those permissions but I'd try that.

This doesn't solve the issue., tried that. Disabling Doze does though :good:
And yes, still amazing low idle drain nonetheless.

Autostarts!

I'm not sure if everybody uses this, but Autostarts is one of my favorite root apps and I recommend it to all of my friends who have rooted. I don't see too many people talking about it anymore so I figured I would remind everyone of this awesome app. It allows you to prevent any apps from running on their own. After using Titanium Backup to debloat my ROM, I then open up Autostarts and run down the list and disable any apps that I don't want to startup without my say so. It does wonders for freeing up RAM. I did this on my Epic 4G Touch and never needed to flash a single custom ROM because I was able to get the stock ROM running flawlessly. It is an invaluable tool to me and I recommend it highly.

I know this is old post, but I bought this app a long time ago also. It's a pretty powerful app and you can modify every reason for an app to start.
I vote to move this to the App section.

Is it able to disable Google Play from starting up at boot? I´ve disabled the event I consider to be associated with Google Play (with Autostarts), but still the app launches by itself at every reboot...

no, it will not. more importantly, google maps is a battery hog, and a privacy killer, and it is also unable to be killed. not by gemini app manager, nor in conjunction with autostarts. google maps will report everywhere you go, and there is nothing you can do about it.
if only someone (windows maybe?) would come out with a nifty phone and declare "Hey we won't sell your soul!" i would so be on board. HTC is slowly drowning themselves, so i am finally, after 6 years, ready to move on to a new brand, and wouldn't mind leaving google behind.

If your interested I managed to disable Maps from always being on the background on my system . What I did? Used Titanium Backup (Pro edition) to convert it to a user app (because it needs to be so, for the next step). After, used a free app called Greenify (you may find it on the Play Store), to "hibernate" Maps at boot time. Result: No more Google Maps on the background . This app is great! You should give it a try. Maybe you may keep your HTC a few more years using it
Unfortunatly trying the same for Google Play messes with its app update functions... that is why I ask.
Hope it helps you on the Maps issue.
Any other ideas anyone?
i use gemini app manager itll stop it all but also remember that certain actions also stop it from updating the market so be careful which autostart functions u stop: although there are more than just at boot for most apps

Mine is already a user app..?
imma reinstall autostarts see if it has stopped working correctly. i know many instances can trigger apps so you can't just disable on startup for it not to run. but i remember disabling maps in like 3-4 places and it stopped starting unless i told it to start.
I have maps disabled completely in both autostarts and Gemini app manager. And maps is still my #1 battery drain. often my phone displays the gps signal when I wake it up, even though I haven't used maps in days.

You may use both in conjunction. Hell, I´m using Autostarts, Autorun Manager (for its simplicity) and Greenify. You just have to know what apps/events are disabled/enabled in them.
Greenify is a little diferent in the way that it hibernats apps when they are not being used/when with the screen off. It works of boot and is really pretty helpfull on those "stubburn" apps that do wish to always remain in the background. With Greenify on they are gone! For good .
Check it on Play Store for more info. Older versions seemed to have some issues with superuser access, with the new one, that seems fixed. It is a great app IMO, saves LOTS of battery and enables a little more ram available for things that do matter (good specially for phones with low RAM memory chips). In the case of your phone you will mainly notice an improvement in battery life, since RAM seems not an issue.
You should try it out

Maps, as you said, has got several instances and events triggered for the most crazy things (at least in my book - since I do not need many of them), and that was why it still kept restarting even after all events disabled (there should be hidden ones related to other apps still operating in a complex interconection). At least that is how I imagine it was working. Greenify manages to hibernate it altogether (Titanium style), with the advantage of being "quicker" "unhibernating" it when needed. No complains for me so far
Glad it helped. It seems an excelent app!
See you:good:
Re: Greenify
Just bought titanium backup pro to use in conjunction with Greenify. $6 to stop maps and facebook from eating half of my battery. Totally worth it IMO.
Kudos to whoever suggested the app first.

[All roms][Sharing] Huge battery saver!

Google think that almost every device running android, is their device. Therefore they implemented a service within Google Play Services that will connect your device often to the Google and it will drain more battery then needed.
NOTE:
I tried a method that was shown on i think this forum or another one. I can't remember which one it was, and i cant find the thread either.
So before i am going to start this, i wanna thank the guy from the original thread for this, even if i dont know where i can find you. I am only sharing this so i take NO CREDITS.
I repeat, i am ONLY sharing this.
+ Works with:
- AOSP roms
- TW roms
- Well, basicly all android running devices :fingers-crossed:
To start with:
- Turn of location settings
- Go to settings, accounts and go to your google account.
+ go to advertisements and untick the toggle that says that Google takes care of your advertisements.
Most important:
- Download Adaway (latest) from HERE.
Thank you @mrRobinson for this awesome app!
- Open adAway and provide Adaway root access.
- Press the menu button and go to your own custom list.
- Now add a line by pressing the + button in the upper right of the screen.
- Add the following line < mtalk.google.com >
- Make sure the the checkmark is ON with the "mtalk.google.com" line.
- Now go back to the homescreen of adAway, apply the patch.
Note: According to the maker of the original thread, this seems to be the server that your device is always trying to communicate with. So by blacklisting this URL, there is no connection anymore.
Note 2: Cyanogenmod (and maybe other AOSP or GE users) are experiencing that the Blue highlighted WI-FI icon and the blue highlighted antenna icon are now GREY after applying this.
This is because you are not connected anymore to the google servers.
Note 3: Keep in mind that you can still manual synchronise your calander, contacts, Gmail, and other Google account related.

This (syncing) only applies for manual updates. Leaving the entry in Adaway will disable auto-updates. Not a viable option for me, am not going to manually refresh Google apps...

I don't think Ad away works as it should though.
It says its syncing and merging with my current hosts file but after doing that my hosts file goes from 1.4mb to 700kb. So all its doing is deleting stuff. Weird

I always delete GooglePlayServices and never have any problems with apps updating.
I still get notifications in my status bar telling me when there is an app update available in the Play Store and also still get my Gmail notifications in my status bar.
Syncing works perfectly and so does Maps, Google Search, YouTube etc.
I actually can't see ANY reason to have GooglePlayServices installed.
All my Google apps still function perfectly without it.
And I no longer have RAM wasted and battery used up by this annoying app!!
My advice to everyone, delete it, it's not needed at all.

Was pretty euphoric when I read this so immediately disabled Play Services and rebooted like a happy little kid
That level of joy didn't last long:
Maps, Calendar, Keep, Youtube, these all need G.P.S. to function properly. Maybe even more apps but this is where I stopped.
Needless to say turned it back on again. This, as well, is not a viable option for me

That's odd, I don't get Google Maps requesting Play services on my device.
I do get one of those notifications after wiping cache and dalvik cache though, I just swipe it away and carry on as normal.
After you swiped them away can you still use the apps requesting it?
For example when I first boot up YouTube after wiping cache it says it needs PlayServices to run but I just ignore and cancel it.
I have never lost any YouTube functionality at all.

You definitely should do hard reset, also some users are facing battery drain with fb app.
I've done factory reset and the problem still exists.

Ok. Got a solution. You need to turn off "links open externally" at Facebook app settings, close the app, try open some links, and than it wil stop crashing. The problem related to the fact that in Android 7 there is no Android webview anymore, so the cause for the crashes is chrome browser. Hope this will help you.
I have done the factory reset. Uninstalled the app, the problem is still there. For example I got the notification that a friend has birthday and if I click on it the FB app closes.

The app crashes if the app language is set to other language than your device's language.

[APP][Root][7.0+]RunInBackgroundSetter v1.4 :: [25.07.2017]

Few hours ago @explainAndroid posted article on xda main page onto how to use android's hidden RUN_IN_BACKGROUND permission to restrict app's background behavior. I made an app for that.
Here's link to original article: https://www.xda-developers.com/freeze-app-background-processes-without-root-android-nougat/
Here's link to app's github: https://github.com/MrBIMC/RunInBackgroundPermissionSetter

Nice app!
Will charging disable this?
Can u make the app work without rooting, just using adb, where the permission through adb for this app is granted once and then it can be used to limit background permission of other apps
excellent mate.
we should post a tutorial... not everyone will understand the potential ramifications of disabling everything
I will try to test this out! Though, I kinda like the old icon compared to the new one, it seems like it's not properly cropped. Additionally, could you add an option to show system and user apps only? Maybe a toggle to ignore apps all at once or vice versa too?
No chance for Marshmallow?
Does this have the same functionality as in lineage os ROMs app ops where you can disable background processes?
As someone is undoubtedly going to ask it, I'll ask it for them. How does this differentiate to apps like greenify @MrBIMC? Do they both limit background processes? Anyways, the all looks very interesting, thanks!

No.
From the Github page:
Anyway, this app is for those who don't want to mess with adb shell and input commands manually and prefer to just click on app name to enable/disable it from running in the background. Sadly, android apps are not allowed to implicitly edit permissions of other apps, so this application requires root to overcome it.

This would be really cool. Best way to implement that I think would be to add Tasker plugin functionality to the app to allow Tasker flows to toggle the permission, which would have the benefit of being able to change it for any reason (such as low battery).

If I understand both correctly... Greenify forces apps to hibernate when you turn your screen off (or manually tell it to), but the app can still wake itself back up for a variety of reasons, such as receiving push notifications, location updates, or any other unnecessary reason like Facebook, lol. This app overrides a hidden permission in Android 7+ that tells the system to not allow the app to run in the background, which means it will not be able to wake itself up.

I actually tried Brevent for the first time a few weeks ago. According to the app itself, aside from not requiring root, it's supposed to monitor when you hit the back button or remove an app from recents, and then actually kill the app process when you do, despite if the app has some background process that it intended to keep running. Basically lets you manually control when an app is killed in a quick and intuitive way, but for me personally, it didn't seem to work as expected for some reason; background processes seemed to keep running after.
Also Brevent, being a non-root solution requires you to connect the device to a PC and run some ADB commands to give it permission every time you reboot. It has an experimental root mode that doesn't require this.

General Samsung Health Platform Battery Drain

Was prompted to install this app. Not even clear to me what it does that Samsung Health doesn't do, but one thing I do know - it drains battery like crazy - as much or more than the display, and it was killing my watch in under a day. Uninstalled, and battery life is back to normal.
Are you referring to this app?

Now I remember where I got the prompt (as I just got it again) - within Samsung Health. Shows up as a pop-up to sync data between apps, which then refers you to the Health Platform app.

I don't have that one. So this is for device health not human health?
Goofy Samsung...

Was prompted to install this app. Not even clear to me what it does that Samsung Health doesn't do, but one thing I do know - it drains battery like crazy - as much or more than the display, and it was killing my watch in under a day. Uninstalled, and battery life is back to normal.

Which app is available that replaces the samsung healt app?
How did people uninstall health platform ? I only see an option to remove the updates. I'm seeing wicked battery drain on my GW4 too.

Are you sure you're referring to the same app - Health Platform, not Samsung Health or Samsung Health Monitor?
Yes, definitely health platform.

I wouldn't remove it unless you know exactly what it does.
Try clearing its data and clearing the system cache.
In Device Care (or whatever it's called on your device) clear system logs and turn off all power management.

Strange - for me, that was an optional download, and so completely uninstalled. Where did you try uninstalling it from, the app drawer? Maybe try disabling it if you can't uninstall it?

Yeah, I was prompted to install it last week (week before?) I'd been looking in Play Store for uninstall but ended up disabling in Settings > Apps and it doesn't appear these any more. I'll reboot the watch and see how I get on (I've got a Samsung phone FWIW, not sure if that's affecting things)
I dont really remember installing this app but had extremely bad battery drain the last few days, which brought me to this thread. When I followed the link to the app store I had the option to uninstall updates only yet the app doesn't show up anywhere on the phone.

If it has a "parent" app you may need to uninstall that to uninstall your problem app.

I've seen Samsung daisy chain their apps together like this with Wearables.
They show as 2 separate apps but install/uninstall as one
That's strange. I have it installed and it IS NOT the battery hog

Interesting. Maybe it's a settings issue within the app.

Possibly as I have everything and the kitchen sink syncing. Only after the latest SH update did things get squirrelly as fast as syncing. But I've managed to get it back and a lot of things sync to SH without using their app, I e. Yunmai my smart scale used to sync with the app, but now won't pair with my phone through the app, but sync weight and BMI directly to SH. Go figure...
