Mobile Hotspot - OnePlus 7 Pro Questions & Answers

So I want to get my hands on the new Oneplus 7Pro.
My only concern is, the Mobile Hotspot on this device. Does it come Carrier unlocked? I'm on Verizon & don't have it added to my plan. For example on my Nexus 6p I'm able to use the Mobile Hotspot feature to share my data with other devices. On my unlocked Google Pixel 2XL it tells me that I have to call my carrier to get this feature unlocked. Mind you this is not the Verizon Pixel 2XL. It's straight from Google. This is a hit & miss with unlocked phones that work on Verizon. Can anyone of you that have the Oneplus 7 Pro on the Verizon Network help with this matter?
Thanks!

If you have root just edit build prop.
net.tethering.noprovisioning=true

I'm not looking into rooting the device in order for the mobile hotspot to work.
I need it to work right out of the box. That's why I'm seeking for assistance from someone who is using the device on the Verizon network. especially from someone that hasn't added the mobile hotspot service to their plan.
Thanks for the quick response.

Usually just add that to the bottom. Save it, Reboot and should be good to go

I have talked to 3 different customer service reps from Oneplus & I had 3 different answers. Yes, No & Not sure. I would greatly appreciate it if you could get back to me on this once you get your device.
Thanks for the response. ??

May depend on your plan. I have a newer unlimited plan with tethering included. I don't have to mess with the provisioning setting. Only have to tweak the throttle.

My plan does not include Mobile Hotspot tethering
That being said. With my experience that doesn't matter, a lot depends on the device if the Hotspot feature is carrier unlocked. Examples, my Nexus 6p works fine. Pixel 2XL it prompts me to call my carrier to get that feature unlocked. Galaxy S10 again no a single problem using the hotspot. Granted all of these devices are Carrier unlocked & can be used with all US Major carriers.

It won't work without rooting.
It won't have the field in the build.prop that Verizon is looking for and the only way to add it, is to root.

I'm also on their grandfathered unlimited datada plan from years ago. Thank you guys so much. I'll be ordering my phone Asap. Did you guys have to contact Verizon customer service to get your line switched over to CDMA-LESS or no longer a problem? I heard that people with iPhones calling you is a problem as well. What can you tell me about that? Thanks guys. ??

Everything worked but I eventually had to call and do that CDMA less deal. I wasn't receiving text messages but everything else worked. Now all good

If it doesn't work, the only way without the provisioning setting is going to be something like pdanet

Works without it no root

My understanding was that the old unlimited plans were now getting throttled as well for speed. If that is the case you might look at the new unlimited plans feature for feature and see if it's less money.
We have a bunch of lines so we only pay $40 per line for the base unlimited.

I'm grandfathered into their true unlimited data plan, & I don't get throttled at all, I use well over 100GB of data on a monthly basis. That's why the hotspot feature is a big deal for me.

I had to do that as incoming texts would not come in.

You still have to have them add the cdma less feature. Even lte only iPhones from att work on Verizon now when you have that feature.
The calling problem between 1+and iPhone is fixed.

[Q] Grandfathered Plan on LTE?

Hey guys, I know that there was another thread on this previously, but there was no answer. I have an old Sim (from around 2008) and just purchased a Skyrocket. I tried using the APN for the LTE, but didnt recieve any internet signal at all. I am currently using the HSPA+, but I was wondering if you guys had any ideas on what could be causing the problem. Thanks in advance.
Call att they will add the right plan...

...you're using a SIM from 2008?
You need a new SIM dude.
Yes, I am actually an old employee and they never took away my plan, so I have avoided going into an ATT store or calling them for about 3 years. lol. What is the difference between an LTE sim and another one? I thought that they just got smaller.
I was in the same boat as you earlier this week. I was still using the same sim for probably the past 4-5 years.
I had to first go get a new LTE sim from the AT&T store. Mine was free although I've heard some places try and charge you.
Next I had to call up 611 and have them change my data plan which was previously listed as "Blackberry Personal Unlimited" <--LOL and switch it over to one of the new LTE unlimited plans.
Took about 5 mins on the phone with the ATT rep and I had LTE service. Congrats on the phone! I've had mine for less than a week and am loving it!
Hey any of you guys think Best Buy would give you a free sim?
Corporate AT&T stores (from my experience) give you free SIMS....Authorized Retailers usually try and charge you.
I have never had a problem with my local AT&T Corporate store, it's the only one I will go to....I never go to an Authorized Retailer.
I really only go to BB because of the insurance being 9.99 a month

Call AT&T and have them provision your line with the LTE plan, there's a specific plan that needs to be added so that your phone will connect to the LTE towers.
I came from an iPhone 3GS. I was allowed to keep my unlimited data plan (which doesn't exist anymore for new people) and got my SIM for free. I did this at a retail store. I say just go in. Verify they aren't going to do anything you don't like before you give them your account info.

You may have to perform what's called an IVR acceptance. I'm recently separated from the company but I consider myself a decent expert on the processes. Did you order the phone from online/call center? If so, when AT&T sends the phone, due to you not being able to PHYSICALLY sign a contract when you upgrade/activate, etc., they place this feature on your account until you dial *862 (from the CURRENT, not new, phone) and accept the terms. You'll need the Billing Zip, Account Holder's Last 4, and the phone # of course. It's all automated. Try that out and THEN insert the new SIM in the SR. It amazed me how many customers would call CARE or go to a store and get stuck for hours because the "rep" thought it was a technical issue when it's really a 2 minute process.

I'm assuming you just attempted to just swap the SIM into the LTE SR and keep it rolling. They're correct when they say you need a new SIM. There's a coding to the network that older (especially 2008) SIM cards won't accept because the network hadn't been constructed @ the time. You will ALSO need an LTE data plan on the account so make sure you've done that as well.
Thanks for all the help guys. I think I am going to give them a call and switch it to a new sim to see if that would work. I have to switch phones first, lol. My plan is super cheap right now, and I got the phone at a steal at 340. My sim card is old as hell, and I will see if it will work without me having to pay more for my old employee plan. I hope they dont ask me for my supervisor's name. Wish me luck.

Do you have the data feature as stand-alone or integrated into the rate plan itself? Some school districts did it that way. 99% of us have stand-alone. If that's the case, it shouldn't affect your current stasis.
Skyrocket CM7 O/C +
Its the one that has it all integrated into the single plan. Here is the text from the plan.

Wow. Rather unique plan you have there. Looks like you have a grandfathered plan that isn't for smartphones. That being the case, outside of the iPhone 2g trick, you're stuck with capped data options.

Someone else a RadioShack employee too? Been gone since mid-08 and am also still on the same plan. I was looking at finally upgrading my Touch Pro 2 and was curious about the data. Looks like I'm pretty much stuck considering I don't want to lose my $25/month plan.
unlimted
I was able to keep unlimited grandfathered data with 4g, but no matter what i did, or who i talked to, LTE would take it away, so i said keep the 4g, im using a skyrocket, and i dont get lte in my area for now, so its kind of ok ( except for travel)
but i had to do this all on the phone with an att rep, nothing was doable online.
hope this helps someone.

Nexus 5 tethering block?

I'm on T-Mobile US and tethering have been working fine for me without paying for the extra tethering fee on my Nexus 4. I can do wifi and bluetooth tether to ipad, nexus 7, and a laptop with user agent switching. Got my Nexus 5 today and nothing works, I keep on getting the upsell page even after playing around with different APN settings. Put my sim back in my N4 everything works. Anyone experiencing the same issue? Maybe Google changed something in KitKat.

What T-Mobile plan do you have?
Supposedly they are giving free wifi hotspot access with nearly all of their plans now, even prepaid.
Perhaps you need to check your APN or register the imei # somehow with T-Mobile.
I had to upgrade/downgrade myself today cause I was using a $10 unlimited web plan with my galaxy nexus, but when I tried to use the fast.-t-mobile.com APN (for LTE access) I got the upsell page as well, no data at all.
What I went ahead and did was sign up for the $30 prepaid plan (100 mins 5gb data) and transferred my number over etc, worked great. I had a micro sim activation kit though, which asked for IMEI number etc. Supposedly I will have wifi hotspot access @ 100mb/month but I haven't tested it yet.

Blocked for me as well. I'm on a post-paid plan. 1000 minutes and unlimited data. I mainly use the tethering with my iPad. Works with Nexus 4, but not with the Nexus 5.

Maybe, but I don't think you will get LTE with that plan, T-mobile seems to be blocking it with the fast.t-mobile.com APN.

Not exactly sure which plan you have but I'm pretty sure T-Mobile is now including free wifi hotspot/tethering for free now. How much monthly data allowed depends on your plan.
If they are giving it to prepaid folks there is no reason why you shouldn't be getting it.
If you install the T-Mobile My account app from the play store see if it shows "mobile hotspot balance". If not I would call them as inquire about it. Don't return it too quickly...

Ok I remember reading you need to have one of their "Simple Choice" plans to get the free mobile hotspot. You might have to change your plan, not sure if it will cost you more to do so though...
I'm assuming the plan you have now is unlimited, and you don't want to switch to the 2.5gb plan, and if you go up to unlimited its probably going to cost you more than you are paying now...

I've used tethering with my Value Plan (1000min/unlimited data) for over a year now. It just doesn't work with the Nexus 5, put the sim back in my Nexus 4 and it works fine. My plan didn't officially come with tethering. It worked fine with my iPad and android tablets. It would present the blocked message on my laptop. I was okay with that, since I didn't subscribe to an "official" tethering plan.
I don't know if this will be fixed with a custom rom, becuase it seems like it is at the core of KitKat. I also tried flashing the bare AOSP ROM, and tethering was blocked with that as well.
Also seeing the blocked tethering over here. On the $30 Tmobile plan and the Nexus 4 works perfectly tethering. Put the same sim into the Nexus 5 and it just redirects me to the sign in page for Tmobile. Hope this is fixed or this will be a massive negative towards this phone, probably even a deal breaker.

I think it is a T-Mobile thing, as I see other people talking about successfully tethering their nexus 5 all over the place. Might just be a small subset of T-Mobile users. Either way its very annoying. Wouldn't be the end of the world if I had to use a different app to tether, but I don't even know if that would or could work.

You have to figure only a small subset of users have received theirs yet, and an even tinier subset of them even care about tethering, and even a smaller subset of then have even tried it yet. Every Nexus device is a disaster until you let it settle in for a week or two and let the wrinkles settle out.
Change 4g data plan
There's a new 4g data plan which includes 2.5GB hotspot data. You still get unlimited phone data for the same price as before. $20/mo.

Anyway to become a mobile Hotspot?

I had my last phone work well with FoxiFi when I needed to use my tablet in the wild. Now, it appears KitKat (I believe) has this feature locked out. Any work aroinds here, rooted or not? I'm not brave enough to mess with SQL tables without knowing which one to change.

WiFi tether router in the play store. Look in q and a section.

you could always use the verizon mobile hotspot. its a builtin app (cant remove it so might as well use it)
Maybe I should clarify a bit. Verizon charges to use hotspot. FoxiFi got around that issue. The WiFi tether app doesn't actually do anything other than access Hotspot.

If you're not on an unlimited plan, tethering isn't any extra. It's only an additional fee if you're still on unlimited (because Verizon sucks). Unless if you haven't changed your plan since they put that policy in place...and if you haven't, well, do so.
If you're overseas on a GSM carrier, why would you be using a Verizon device? Especially since the Dev Edition is available and can be S-OFF'd easily.

Mobile hotspot absolutely does cost extra on Verizon, even if you have a data-limited plan.

That's only for the "More Everything" plans. It costs extra for everyone else either as an add-on or a more expensive data tier.

From what I understood, unless if you're still on a grandfathered plan of any type (maybe specifically unlimited data grandfathered, I'm not sure), wifi tethering is supposed to be free. Unless if you have proof otherwise, I'm going to stick with my belief.
That being said, I still have unlimited data, and I'm only going to give it up when they pry it out of my cold, dead fingers, so regardless of their actual policies, it doesn't affect me. Besides, now that we have S-Off and full root, free tethering should be relatively simple once someone figures out how to do it, if it hasn't already been solved.

My "proof" is that it wouldn't let me enable the hotspot on my phone with my 10GB/month plan. You have to upgrade to their new plans for the free tethering.

Actually Verizon lost an FCC appeal for LTE, they must allow tethering for plans that are not "Unlimited".
Ask them for the provisioning if you are not on an unlimited plan.

Unlocked s8 with old verizon unlimited data plan

I know it's a long shot but I am wondering if anybody had gotten unlocked model with unlimited data plan the old one not new one is able to tether with no limit. Just curious.
Hey, I have the old Verizon Unlimited Data plan. Yes, it will use Mobile Hotspot with no problem; you don’t even need Foxfi. Can't anyways with Nougat.

I second the poster above. I picked up the S8 unlocked vrn grandfathered udp today for the reason you are considering. Confirmed. It tethers no problem. Yes!
S8+ unlock works with grandfather unlimited data plan!!!
unlimited data plan. All I have to do is just press the hotspot bottom on the top menu and it turn on automatically.
Question for the other s8+ users in the same boat than me. Have you done the update and the hotspot still works for grandfather Verizon users.
I got an unlocked Model at Best Buy last week, so not a once Verizon then unlocked but started unlocked and it didn't do phone and data at same time, under any plan. Verizon even swapped Sims a few times with no improvement. I had to take it back with a $35 restock fee. BB and I are in discussions as after it was figured out Samsung suggested they swap it with a Verizon model and the sales guy chose not to. It appeared the software that lets the phone do proper VoLTE "Advanced Features" is not there and doesn't show up when you insert a Verizon Sim like expected. There is a VoLTE option that seems to do nothing however (under Verizon). There is no patch or update at this time to resolve. Was about to make a post about it in the root so others won't have same experience when I saw this one.

With unlocked phones, you should use an ACTIVE SIM, not a sim that isn't active. Since its unlocked, the IMEI number probably isn't in the Verizon data base, so an inactive sim can't help, but if you have an active sim (like I had/have), it will work. volte works, just no wifi calling or visual voicemail.

I agree that it should have but didn't. I used an active Straight Talk SIM (Verizon) no luck with talk and data together, then went to a Verizon corp store and they inserted an active sim to test and it still refused to do both data and talk at same time. Spent an hour and a half on phone with tech support first. They even conferenced Verizon who said the network was right and the phone/acct was provisioned.
I don't know if this is just the Best Buy batches or not. I think I will just try and get a Verizon phone that's been unlocked like my S5 I reverted back to. But information and suggestions are appreciated. I don't want to think that I returned a phone I could have gotten working, esp since the deal ended last week and they refused to sell me another for same price. But between the SIMs and going right to Verizon, I am not sure what else I could have done, unless the phone itself was bad.
Thanks
OMG THANK YOU! I never even thought of that when I bought the unlocked version of the 8+. I just tried it and WIFI and BT tethering both work flawlessly.

You don't even need unlocked version of S8+. Just flash the international firmware and you're good to go. No throttling on hotspot nor video.
I bought an S8+ at Best Buy last night ($150 off - Black Friday, whoohoo!) and was planning on rooting the hell out of it so that I would have my mobile hotspot on my grandfather UL plan. Didn't have to. The sucker just works.
That leads me to the obvious question: does Verizon know about it and will I be charged for it?

Wait is this confirmed that unlocked phones do not get throttled on video? I've wondered why I haven't gotten throttled but guessed it was because I'm still in contract for another year with my Unlimited Plan from 2011.

Not true. I'm grandfathered, but I do get throttled when watching 4k or 1080p 60 fps or 60fps or 1080 hdr (I think). The solution? A VPN. I bought Express VPN. It's 99 I think for a year, but I did ask for an additional 3 months, which is a promotion they had or have had before.

What was the resolution to this issue? I'm experiencing the same thing with an unlocked S8 purchased at Best Buy. Thanks.
Guys...have a friend or family that has a VERIZON PHONE, put your sim and activate the SIM in a VERIZON PHONE. After the Nano sim is active, but in the Unlocked S8, S8 Plus or Note8. I've used my unlocked S8 Plus on Verizon without getting provisioned for tethering. I got a Note8 now, verizon model, but flashed U1 firmware. I still am able to tether....

Anyone Using the Oneplus 7 Pro on Verizon in the U.S. and not having issues?

I'm seriously considering buying the Oneplus 7 pro as my next phone. My carrier is Verizon (I can't change it, it's for work) I'm having some second thoughts after reading on these threads about the issues people are seeing with Verizon. I'm curious if anyone has activated the Oneplus 7 pro on verizon that is not having issues with things like not being able to receive calls from iphones and not getting text messages on a wifi connection. This will help me make my decision on if I will move forward with purchasing this phone. Thanks a lot!!!
I have been using the 7Pro with Verizon for about 3 weeks. I have had no issues with Verizon since day one. I think maybe the first couple of days when I received a call from an unknown number it would show restricted on the caller ID. That issue was resolved with the first update I received. As far as activating the phone with VZW, all I did was move my apps from old Galaxy S8+ and then go online to VZW's website and activate my 7Pro and deactivate my S8+. Everything worked from the start. I have been very happy with my 7Pro and VZW.

Almost everything was working with just a sim swap. Except, I wasn't able to receive incoming texts at all, wifi, or on LTE. My sim is on a business line, and a quick call to Verizon help by dialing 611, and let him know I needed CDMA-less provisioning and we activated it, and tested it, and no further issues. I do get VoLTE, but obviously no wifi calling thru Verizon.

I actually used the OnePlus Switch app to move my apps and other files to my new 7Pro. It was rather easy to use. The only real issue I had after moving apps was I had to uninstall and reinstall a few apps because they would not load. Otherwise it was just having to log back in to everything and get everything the way I liked it.

Hey, I'm the one who put a thread together posting the aggregate information at the time for activating the OnePlus 6T on Verizon Prepaid :
https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-6t/help/discussion-verizon-prepaid-oneplus-6t-t3864541
After successfully activating and using the OP6T on VZW prepaid, I simply popped my SIM into the 7Pro and everything worked fine. None of the issues you mentioned have occurred, in my experience.
You might simply put your current SIM into a 7Pro and see what happens. If you have problems, I'd recommend going to a CORPORATE Verizon store (not a franchise location) for help. They are much more savvy. Make sure that your account has CDMA-less and VoLTE active.
Good luck!

I'm Using mine on Verizon. So far the only issue I have had is visual voicemail. Since I have been on a custom ROM I think its fixed. I did have to call Verizon and have them do the CDMA less deal. I wasn't getting text messages. But it was quick fix. So far I'm liking it better than my pixel 2 XL
Thanks for this is red this is great news to me I have been holding off on buying the phone through OnePlus website. Wi-Fi calling is not really an issue for myself I don't think, forgive my ignorance I'm coming from Sprint where any outside phone you bring there is no way you can be on a call and data at the same time I forget what Verizon causes feature voice over data VOLTE? This is not a problem with Verizon and the OnePlus 7 I assume? Thanks

I had a 6T now the 7 Pro.
I'm not having any issues.
No issues here coming from the Pixel 3 XL. The OnePlus Switch app worked great and as it has been said previously, a few apps required that i uninstall, then reinstall them again to get them to work (maybe 2 out of 50). VOLTE works great and I typically have no issues. The only time I have ran into a problem is occasionally it will say I am connected to WiFi or LTE, but no data will transfer as if I am not connected. A quick reboot solves the issue, but it is not consistent enough to determine if it is an app, Verizon, or the phone itself. Happened maybe 3 times over the last 3 weeks. No Visual Voicemail is disappointing. Also, get a weird, jumbled text from Verizon after every Spam call I get. Will be getting on with Verizon support to see what that is about. Fingers crossed that Google will get it's stuff together with their RCS rollout and it makes it onto OnePlus devices. I can't really think of any deal breaker as far as bringing OP7P to Verizon. At least not for me. Will update if I can think of anything else.

Mms/sms: yes
But more importantly VoLTE does work
(Ie. Using mobile data during a call)
Used to be a big issue on custom or non VZW ROMs on VZW
Do you have to do anything to get your hotspot to work properly the reason I don't buy phones from Verizon is I'm on the grandfathered unlimited data plan meaning I don't get throttled after using a certain amount of data it's only $10 more a month than their so-called unlimited plan they have offer now. If I switch to a Verizon phone they will make me sign up with dere new data plan which only offers 30 gigabytes a month and I would burn through that inside of a couple days. So the reason I've been sticking with my HTC u12 plus is the native hotspot on this international phone works right out of the box since it's not Verizon limited software. I just wondered does your hotspot work flawlessly?

Hi there so how about your phone does it do the hotspot without issue? I know Verizon branded phones you have to have their newer program to use the hotspot and they limit you at 30gb I'm on that old grandfathered plan like I've been mentioning and on my HTC u12 Plus I can tether to my heart's content because it's not Verizon's software limiting my usage of the hotspot. If the 1917 International model of this phone has the native hotspot working I'm buying this thing tomorrow.

Yes, the hotspot works just fine. My wife and I use it every day when our kids want to use their tablets when we're away from wifi. Multiple devices connected to the hotspot doesn't seem to slow it down.
I am no longer on the grandfathered plan, i recently switched to the 'above unlimited'.
But the plan i was on before had no problems with hotspot on this phone, nor my 6T.
But it did track the amount of usage. If we'd go over certain GB it would throttle the speed.
I read on the forums here somewhere there might be a way (by editing build.prop iirc) to trick VZW from telling the difference between mobile data and mobile data+hotspot. Ie, reading hotspot as mobile data only so you can go over your GB cap. I tried it, there were a few lines that weren't the same on this phone, and my family switched to the new unlimited plan before i could test it out
(I was hesitant to switch from my arsenal of HTC phones, too... ?)
I been on Verizon since op7 pro came out, don't know about iphone calls because haven't had any 1 call me who had an iphone. Hotspot worked on stock rom and now on RRS rom. Also issue with visual voice mail but regular works, verizon asks you to make a pin managed on their app

Im in the same boat as you I need to uprage but have a grandfathered unlimited data plan. Seems like the 1plus7 is the phone to get as samsung phones are now locked. anyway have has it worked out for you? did you get a specific model for it to work with verizen? did you root your phone once you got it? Let me know if I can ask you more questions.

I have a galaxy S7 edge. looking to upgrade I would like to get the one plus 7 Mclaren.
I have the Unlimited data grandfathered plan and would like to keep enjoying the hotspot.
I think this is the phone I want but does it meet the criteria? If you have your on verizon can you answer these questons?
1.does the hotspot work without paying verizon a bribe every month?
2.I would like add blocking so rooting it,? does it break the bank apps or fingerprint scanner?
3.are all models able to get on verizon or do I need a specific model? if so which one?
4.does it have any bloat ware like samsung?
