Just thought this would be a good idea for all of us having voicemail problems.
Post solutions and comments on developing a fix here instead of clogging up the cyanogen thread.
PS the spiicytuna method posted on page one of cyanogen does nothing to fix the 9016 issue.

Call the number included in the text you get. It will ask you if you have a sms voivemail phone or smth. Press one for no, and you stop getting the texts.

Tried that. You get a new text telling you to call a certain number to retrieve your voice mail.
Blacklist the number?
One way around it
Well. It seems you can go to Sprint and block the text message at the source. Just log into your account and add them to your block list.
Will have a voice mail sent to me and see if it works. I've read in other forums that it can take a month to work.

Update: Blocking 9016 did NOT work. My VVM updates, but I still get the annoying texts.
Any suggestions?
im not sure what that 9016 issue is but i do have a voicemail notification issue so i will speak of that
the sms you receve can be avoided while messing with ur settings in google voice online... when u click edit on ur mobile number there are options to uncheck sms notifications as well as transcriptions.. mess with ur settings and that fixes that issue, now onto the annoying one...
the way that i have figured out how to temporarly remove the icon is to flash whatever the latest nightly build is using rom manager and the use the option to wipe and adding the google apps, i then wait for my phone to reboot and let rom manager do its thang then as soon as i put in all my gmail information i wait till the menu starts to pop up then quickly press menu, call settings, voicemail number then change that *86 to my 10 digit phone number then press okay then i quickly change my carrier to google voice then go through all of those settings quickly till i click finish then press okay even though i may get that error that says something like my carrier doesnt support google voice or whatever it is then i go back to the carrier option and even though google voice is already selected i click google voice again and it tells me that my number has changed... no more voicemail notification UNTIL i reboot my phone, so any new fix that maybe come out involving any other issue i choose to ignore if it means that i have to reboot my phone... also a good thing to know is once u have success of finally getting rid of the icon whenever a new build is released just install it using rom manager once again but this time DO NOT select the wipe option and rom manager will install the latest build without the voicemail icon and all ur settings will be good to go right after the install however the same rules still apply, one u reboot it will come back, so after installing the latest build just dont wipe and dont reboot after all is said and done...
even though some tard thinks me mentioning *86 as the issue is me "wasting bandwidth" i feel that that is where the issue is.. this is the only rom that i have to change the carrier settings right off the bat instead of defaulting to our sprint voicemail... im not saying im *****ing about the issue in any way but this is an issue ive been having so i thought i would mention that...
now onto things ive tried that never worked....
ive tried just keeping my sprint number as the default but that never works, my only solution has been changing to google voice quickly...
ive called myself exactly 10 times and left myself voicemail messages, then after installing the latest nightly ive change to my voicemail number to sprints and deleted all 10 msgs and that did nothing...
ive gone into the application settings and deleted the phone data cache then quickly change to google voice without success, even after changing the settings i quickly pulled my battery and then started my phone so that it would default to googlevoice and still nothing...
since rom manager has worked for me as a temp fix ive tried doing all the same stuff using ar recovery doing all wipes and whatever else is possible without success, rom manager is the only one that works for me so i just stick to that...
and for those that say the google voice is too hard to setup its really not, just quit being lazy and do ur initial setup through google.com/voice and get urself a number and play with ur settings in there and when ur done with that then start the tutorial up top
i never had this issue until went from a cm6 nightly to zenfx2.2 to update my prl then I nandroided back and now i get these texts every 5 min
I think you guys should think of using Google Voice... Unless I am misunderstanding something, this is a Sprint VVM problem right?

Google Voice is the ****! Use it, enjoy, problem solved!
Man thats some good weed!
I don't like Google Voice... It doesn't give me anything I want. I shouldn't have to get Google Voice to fix a silly problem.
//not complaining about text messages, just Google Voice.

My phone keeps saying "fresh" over and over again and won't turn on. I am running stock froyo android CM6.0.
Can you help?
Maybe I need to update my PRI.

Problem with google voice is that it sometimes disconnects for no reason. I was using it and had to change because it kept dropping me and people would tell me my voicemail did not work.
I'd be cool with G-Voice if it did not do this.

Hmm my original answer is showing now after I had a small crash and rewrote the other response. Ignore this one.

This is just an educated guess and not a statement of fact, but having run the Fresh ROM in the past, it sounds like at some point you flashed your phone with the Fresh ROM, and then maybe flashed back to CM6 but forgot to wipe everything?
When the Fresh ROM boots up, it does indeed say, "Fresh!", so if you're stuck in a boot loop with that ROM's data, you could hear "Fresh!" repeatedly and your phone not start up.
I would go to recovery, do the full factory reset wipe, wipe cache, dalvik cache, and then do your nand-restore or reflash of CM6, google apps, etc.
I hope that this helps.
Thank you for your time,
I would try to just wipe the dalvik and cache first and only do a factory reset if that doesn't work.

I may try it again, as I did not mind G-Voice. But it had happened a few different times. Now I admit I have not tried it since I went to RC2 and the 8/24 nightly.
I'll try setting it up again and see what happens.
I'm having a very odd issue on my Nexus S 4G. My phone is deactivated and has no service whatsoever, I just use it on Wi-Fi, but after I flashed the ICS SDK port, I happened to look in my settings>status and it has a phone number listed that wasn't mine. Then I got a notification that I have a voicemail, and it won't go away whatsoever and it's driving me insane. Obviously I can't call the voicemail since the phone has no service, Sprint can't do anything because it has no service and I've tried a few things but it just ends up coming back!
I've tried wiping data from the [VOICEMAIL] Dialer and it'd work but then the notification would just come back. I tried flashing a new ROM, baseband, no go.
So my question is, does anyone know how to get rid of this permanently? Any method at all, or even delete the number associated with my phone somehow?
Thanks! -Alex

Doesn't work, as soon as I enter the last code it erases everything on the dial pad. I think I may need service to do that.

No service is needed. SprintMenu.apk is what launches it. Which rom are you on now?

Okay, then that's what it may be. I'm on Bugless Beast, which is a stock ROM with tweaks but I checked the system apps on Titanium Backup and didn't see the application you mentioned. I'll find a stock ROM see if I can pull it out and install it, or just flash one and try.
Edit: I flashed a stock ROM and now I'm able to enter the MSL, but now the problem is I don't know it. Do you know how to obtain it? Tried MSL reader on the market but doesn't work.
Edit 2: Never mind, I figured it out. Did as you said, entered the MSL code and reset and now the number is gone and no voicemail icon. Dude, I freaking love you! lol. Thanks a lot for the help, take care.

What if you're not on Sprint? When my wife upgraded her phone the CSR at the TMobile store said I needed a new SIM and put it in there. Then the VM icon popped up and has been on ever since. What is a MSL code?
Anyone? Is there another method?
Yes it Will work on non sprint. MSL--> master subsidy lock.
Well this whole time it was that it didn't reset my call forwarding to my carriers voice mail number. Once I did that I was able to call myself, leave a voicemail then check it. All those months...
On the new 4.0.1 rom by aosp, working great....but the voicemail icon won't go away
tried the above and whenever phone booted back up, com.google.phone (or whatever) stopped unexpectedly.
Any help is appreciated
My Oneplus gets "This is a lost phone" message intermittently every day with my loud ringtone. It stops when I press the okay button. This is despite me having it in silent mode.
Since this happens only during my office hours, where I have to leave my phone silent always, I am unable to investigate it rather than just press the OK button and it disappears.
I have my device manager activated in the phone. Thought it was previously my Theftie app which was activated, which I deactivated but the message keeps coming on every day.
Any way how to stop this?

next time as soon as the incident happens , can you check which wakelock was running ? Use wakelock detector app from google play.
It would be interesting which application is invoking this event !!
I did download wakelock detector but it says it needs root access since KitKat upgrade. Maybe will root it when time permits.
Meanwhile had another instance of the event, when I received a text from an number not in the Contacts. If I remember correctly, it happened yesterday as well when I received a text from a number not in Contacts list.
Really annoying that it happened during a meeting.

Got it in US, but I have now moved back to UK though.
Still have the same problem, but have figured out that it happens when I receive a text from a number not on my contacts list. Have not had a chance to root it though
Make a Backup and do a factory reset.

Just throwing out ideas here, are your Locations turned on ? Maybe since it came from the US and you moved to the UK it "sees" that you are not in the US anymore and that is why it is doing this ?

I do have the Location turned on most of the time. Even when I got it in US from oneplus directly, I have used my same UK sim there as well on roaming.
I have done a backup and reset and it sill happens!
Block the text number and uncheck the settings in device manager and change your gmail password. If it still works after a factory reset and make sure you do not restore your software. It sounds like what I do to my son when he does not pick up the phone I make it ring and I do it through device manager because I have his info...
Did you initially bought it from OnePlus, or did you buy it from another user?

How many text numbers can I block? SInce I am in sales, I get many calls and texts from numbers not in my contact list.
I have unchecked the settings in the device manager and deactivated it. Changed the gmail password a week ago as well, and the problem persists

Yes, done all that is possible. Only thing remaining is rooting the phone (i dont want to unlock the bootloader for that thought)
You could try doing a Backup und then a factory reset.
Not sure if you already got a custom recovery

Quit sure you can block quite a few... If all of what we have suggested still does not work may I suggest you selling your phone and buying another one. Hey try putting sim card in another phone and see if that phone has the same result
So I downloaded an app that allowed me to spam sms to someone however upon uninstalling it I have discovered that I no longer can send sms messages from my device. They don't mark them as failed or anything they just never are received on the other end. I imagine that somehow the smsc gateway settings got changed but I can't find out how to view it or change the value.
I don't want to have to factory reset my phone but I will if all else fails. Can anybody help?
btw I have boost

I am a little bit confused here. And the app you are talking about somehow was interferred with your original sms app? Look you need sms service and sms app. Perhaps worth extracting from kdz. I might dig those out for you. For example myself, I am using the messanger and services from Marshmallow AICP even on my GF2 and it's working like a charm. The thing is if you haven't srewed the services up, bro.

I wanned suggest this.
I'm on OB4. It has been this way since 3, and yes I've tried a factory reset.
Seems like people who send me texts never get their messages through.
I've tried just shy of everything. Anyone have any ideas?
I'm using Textra Pro btw
Yes it is happening to me too.. Many a times i wont get the otp. I thought it was carrier issue.
makes me feel a little bit better. i was beginning to think all my friends started hating me

Same here. I was on the Official and had to go back to Android 9. Really sucks because I really liked 10
I installed carrier services from the play store, and it seems to be making it better
I wasn't getting them in the google messenger app and couldnt' download attachments (oneplus messenger or whatever it's called is disabled). I just installed this, looking forward to my next mms.

did it fix it?
I have had this issue on Android 10 only.
I've pinpointed it to when the phone is inactive for I don't know how long.. I work third shift, so sleep in the am woke up everyday for 2 weeks to texts **** down calling worked..
Only fix is reboot.
Temp fix is a scheduled shutdown and start up while I sleep and phone charges. Haven't had issues in a week now. I'm running atnt and Verizon side by side

Did you find a fix for this?
I was having issues with the stock messaging app, did not get a lot of text, or have them send either. It did not matter what network the recipient/sender was on. I switched to google messages and have not had the issue repeat itself. I am on tmo, and this happened to me months back.
