Old OnePlus 6 black and the new OnePlus 7 Pro white - OnePlus 7 Pro Questions & Answers

In settings
OnePlus 6 black background
OnePlus 7 Pro white background
Can you tell me how to make the settings screen black with the OnePlus 7 Pro ?

Found it never mind

If you're talking about the theme, it's in the settings under display.

Apparently the latest version of the software will try to force a dark theme on other apps also, like Instagram, etc.

Apparently I must have missed the memo, my Instagram is still white background, lol

me too, lol. but he might mean in the Android Q beta. I believe since Q is going to have dark theme now, one of the features is that it also tries to force certain apps into dark theme as well.

updated to Oreo, menus now white, how do i get them dark again?

It seems they are now inverted from before the update. When I hit invert, the menus look correct, but the rest of the stuff is messed up, so that doesn't work.
How can I get my dark menus back without ruining the colors of everything else?
To clarify, I'm referring to the menus in settings and when I swipe down from the home screen.

yeah, that's Oreo's default theme. Lots of white. So what you are seeing is entirely expected and normal.... inverting the colors affects everything...
If you want to theme Oreo, you can do so, but you will need to be routed and install 'substratum' found in the play store... Oreo supports theming, but I think for now, you must be rooted (although, last I heard there should be a paid app available soon that doesn't require root)...
Also, there are lots of Oreo compatible themes for substratum, available in the play store.... I'm using a dark / pure black theme. Love it.
Good luck
You can try Substratum and Swift Dark/Black Theme
I still have this problem. It would be nice if Textra fixed the issue. If you go to Customize Look -> Screen Color -> Light, then the menu appears white with dark text.
But if you choose Dark or Black, then it's white with very light text.
Why can't Google just provide a setting to let us to choose either a light or a dark background for the menus? I don't want to root and I'm not going to buy a theme app. I don't want to "theme" anything else. I just want a toggle to choose either light grey or dark grey settings screens. Simple enough.

I'm sure they will down the line. theming/OMS is still very new in AOSP and stock Oreo and AFAIK, they are still ironing out support and their own dark theme...
if you don't want to root or pay a Buck or two to a hard working theme developer, than you are S.O.L.
If it is simple enough, feel free to write the supporting code and contribute to AOSP.... complaining in am XDA forum isn't going to make that support appear for u.

It's back on 8.1. If you have a black wallpaper it will detect this and theme everything dark. Download the developer image from Google. You can root it too, with a working SUhide.

My settings menu didn't go dark. Just the Google App and the notification pane. And Swift Dark is not quite there yet on 8.1
Oreo update HORRIBLE, knew in 2 seconds I would hate it when my notifications section turned to white background (you suck google) then noticed all kinds of thinks I didn't like. Apple updates made my phone worse EVERYTIME and now google is doing that. Simple stuff like changing background colors GONE and worthless stuff added to hug up the phone. Had my Moto for 3 weeks, first 2 weeks liked it, updated to moto oreo and now DON't like it anymore. I just wanted security patches not my OS screwed and ALL my setting gone, and why is this clock showing up again. all my setting which took forever to figure out and now reset back to what i didn't like, then add the horrible WHITE background garbage like the notoication window. I didn't want my nice UI screwed up. So I learned that like APPLE every Andriod update will be worse TOO. sad, don't like my new phone anymore, thanks for updating it to GARBAGE.

Hey!
I will pay! I will pay a developer! What apps do this?! I will buy them in a heartbeat. I am just as frustrated as OP and some other posters in this thread.
I AM NOT ROOTED ON AN HTC 10.
I spent all morning on a deep dive in the Play Store tinkering and installing several apps, and none of them addressed the actual issue of allowing the user to choose the color of the notification shade. I can't stand the white either.
Please help.
Andromeda, it's on the app store and also probably easy to find on here. Sorry I don't have a link at the moment, I'm on mobile. But the app is about 2 dollars and works great on my Moto z2 force.
Keep in mind you will need a laptop and some basic knowledge of turning on usb debugging in developer settings. It will need to be a Linux/Mac/Windows computer. Chromebooks are not supported as far as I know at this point.
See the xda thread for more details. Find it by looking up "Andromeda xda" on your favorite search engine of choice.

I went through that whole process this morning also. I kept getting a "run shell script" error with my Mac. It's real frustrating. I didn't want to do it, but I gave it my best shot, and I followed all the videos and directions, but no one knows what to do if "run shell script" error comes up.
Didn't work out I guess. But I gave it a shot. Still is so much to do just for the option to make an eff-ing black notification shade.

I have a few I've used that are unmistakably dark.
I think the reason is because I use Nova Prime as my launcher, so the themes aren't going to pick up on that and thus change the color of the notification shade.
Yes I too I'm pissed off at this new Oreo white look I like the look of my old build WTF why can't Google give us a choice why can't we theme just the God damn color I'm really pissed off now.
I'm so pissed off as well, can't get menus and title bars or even pop-up menus to be black. It was fine back on nougat 7.0
Now it's all white
I dont mind the Oreo update but like so many I hate hate hateeeeeeee the stupid status bar, its white. I wish they allowed up to change the color on the status bar like we can for the AOD clock. I have a background of nature and the sun is up there and I cannot read the clock, battery, connection status etc because its invisible on the wallpaper and I have a theme. I tried to use Andromada but it looks so confusing to use and you have to pay for it and the feedback from the public is bad
**** google for this. YOU HEAR ME??? **** YOU GOOGLE! YOU SUCK! FORCING WHITE BACKGROUND SCREENS ON US! MY EYES HURT... I"M GONNA CONTACT MY LAWYER!!

Any black conversion themes out there for Pixel 2?

Is there any conversion mods out there that makes the menues (and what not) on our Pixel 2 units into fully black themed colors?
I am asking this just for battery reasons, because we got AMOLED based screen technique and darker colors is better for conserving battery life on this kind of screens.
Anyone?

I use SwiftBlack personally
I use the spectrum theme (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jerbeck24.Spectrum)
Most complete one I know of is Swift Black (or Swift Dark for dark grey instead of pure black). Great Substratum theme updated every 1-2 weeks. There are some issues with notification text on all themes, but Swift makes it tolerable.

Swift black
I tried Swift black and dark themes but couldn't get the notification text to be readable. So I tried AospUI black and dark themes and it's been great! It gets updated every week as well.
Maybe OT but do you use substratum with root or with andromeda? And what are the benefits of either method? Are all themes safe to use or is there anything to pay attention for? Thanks in advance

They have a fix for that now. Alternatively, you can set your wallpaper to be 'dark' in order to force Google's UI to go black, and you'll have no issues at all.

The native dark mode doesn't affect the entire UI the way Substratum does. It leaves notifications and Google apps blindingly white.

Right, the point is that you use the native dark mode in conjunction with SwiftBlack and it results in readable notifications.

Dark/Black theme compatible with MIUI 10?

I've spend hours looking for a dark/black theme fully compatible with MIUI 10 but alas, to no avail.
I've found some themes I really like but there are two distinct issues.
1. The pull down notification is still in white
2. Lock screen notifications stop working.
Has anybody come across any themes that at least cure these two issues?
Flat Kola
When I was on MiUI 10 Beta on Mi Max 2, I used Flat Kola. It worked for everything except the notification shade.
Give it a try and let me know.

Thanks, I'm using Grid TT which is really good but I tried Flat Kola and it's exactly the same problems. The main one is that when you get a message and the screen comes on it does not show the message on the screen as it does with the normal theme.
The closest way to getting this is using power shade: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.treydev.pns
Check this thread, there are a few good dark ones there for miui 10.

How do I get MIUI 10 on Mi Max 3?
I'm on China rom and I believe I found a near perfect free MIUI 10 black dark theme on the China theme store:
暗黑 Link: http://zhuti.xiaomi.com/detail/004c4bbf-97f1-4036-a8eb-4042a2165bb0
Settings and Contacts are both black, while status bar is grey. I customized by reverting my lockscreen, icons and status bar back to default, and font to Roboto (also on China store) for readability sake.
For Global Rom Theme Store so far the best I've experienced is Darkoid - Blacky. Everything including status bar plus WhatsApp is black. (a shame I can't sideload it on unrooted China rom)
Extraction V10
With LATEST update on MI 8 If You are not in India region, all MIUI 10 Themes are useless. Phone switch to default theme by himself. after few minutes if you install with My Themer or with Miui Theme Creator, whatever, but you can not instal with Default Theme application any downloaded Theme What expert in Xiaomi decided that?!?!?!

I can partially understand Chinese, but what makes it tough is the fact that the search function of the store is poor. Even searching for Black in Chinese, I never came across this theme despite its first tag is Black.
I just randomly and blindly browsed around until I stumbled upon this and a few more less ideal Black themes, all also tagged Black, and also never turned up on my searches.
MIUI10 compatibility filter would have been great too.

V10 is more of a user defined handle rather than a store defined one. Not used as commonly in the China store compared to the Global one.

The best I've found is one called Reloaded V10 . It does the main thing of making dark all the drop down notifications and dialer etc, also does WhatsApp which is a bonus for me.
I'm on the Global MIUI10 and could not get themes at first. The way to get around it was to set my Region to Hong Kong (in Additional Settings)

How to remove ugly drop shadows?

Recently got the Pixel 3a and love it. The only thing that bothers me, on dark wallpapers, the notification bar has a greyish backdrop under it. Is there anyway to remove this from both the home screen and the app switcher screen? Nova launcher seems to clear it from the home screen, but the app switcher still has it.
I can't attach photos to show, but just set a pure black wallpaper then look at the top of the screen.
Could you try using a different launcher? I think Nova Laumcher has a option to show/hide shadow on desktop.

Unfortunately, I don't have a solution for this, but I still wanted to add, that I had my 3a sent in for repair partly for this exact behavior.
I can't link a photo atm, but on a solid black wallpaper I could see ~4 brighter bars at the top of the screen, and something similar at the bottom (like LCD/LED displays suffer from clouding, but technically impossible on an OLED). I recommend you to turn on the screen rotation of the Pixel Launcher, because it follows orientation, therefore proving it's not a hardware issue per se.
Like you said, it doesn't appear on screenshots either, so it is beyond recognition of screen capture. Another software layer maybe.
Could you also carefully check dark greys and blacks of any video? Those colors seemed to be muddy for me, especially noticeable when using a black filter dimmer in CF Lumen.
Also, I might add that my Pixel didn't have this issue for the first months, it suddenly appeared and was even gone for one day before sticking.
So yeah, I guess I had this exact issue as well, let me know if you find out anything and I'll make sure to let you know how my repair went.

Yeah, you can see the grey gradient at the top. It's like a backdrop on the status bar. Yours looks a bit worse than mine though, as mine doesn't stand out as bad as yours. What that is called, is gradient banding. And I checked some dark videos for you and don't see it in videos. Also, my grey backdrop at the top doesn't have banding, it's a smooth gradient. You can google gradient banding to see examples of what it looks like.

Gotcha, I always described it as if a gradient got its color depth reduced, good to know there is an actual term for that.
And thanks for checking the greys. My whole display was affected by this issue, rendering darker tones what felt like yellowish/greenish, looking muddy.
And to reiterate, it became like this from one second to another, so if anything broke, you might be affected before noticing, because for you it looked like this from the start, from what I understood. I hadn't had a chance to compare it to another 3a, maybe that's something for you to check, just to be sure.
Still, I'll let you know when I get mine back, if the repair helped and if they found the culprit, or if I'm going crazy entirely.

Yes, just an edited Pixel Launcher.
Quick update as promised:
I have my 3a back and they told me they replaced the device instead of repairing it.
The banding is now gone (of course), but the drop shadow is still there, although barely noticeable. Hopefully the other suggestion worked out for you.
So thanks for telling me about banding and sorry for a possible confusion. Really glad to be back on team 3a though.
