Charging time - Samsung Galaxy A8 (2018) Questions & Answers

Hi there everyone
I'm new to this forum so shalom
Lol
I've noticed my phone takes extremely long to charge (around 3-4 hrs even with fast charge)
Is there a problem with my phone or something cause even a tablet does not take that long

good question that their reply doesnt answer. i hate it when people do that. Anyways, my phone will go from 14(ish)percent to green-light full in about 90 min on a good wall plug and cable. Not all type c cables are created equally. I bought about 10 or so cables in the first year of buying this phone to have in the car, at work, bedroom, living room etc etc etc and they were all bought on amazon, but from different mfgs. I say all of that because i found out first hand that different cables plugged into the same usb outlet have yielded varying results. My fiancees OP2 is the worst about this. Hers will barely charge on some of the usb cables ive obtained. Even if youre using the oem cable, check the usb plug, and if thats fine, try a different one of both. This phone shouldnt ever take that long to charge even if its being used as a gsp, streaming music and video chatting simultaneously(im being deliberately excessive on the last bit for comedys sake)

Short HTC Micro USB cable

Hi,
I'm looking for a short usb cable to charge my DHD...I searched the forums and found this link:
h t t p ://shop.brando.com/brando-workshop-usb-to-micro-usb-adapter_p04234c1181d039.html
Will this be compatible with the HTC Desire HD?
I could swear someone I've met before - who has a Desire - has got a short HTC marked usb cable - does anyone know anything about that?
Thanks
As long as it's a USB to Micro USB cable any will do fine no matter brand.

It should be. Any standard USB cable should do.
try something like this :
www.dicksmith.com.au/product/E6201/milkshake-retractable-cable-usb-to-mini-micro
you can find these cables on ebay.
works well and also does mini usb. be careful some usb to micro usb cables are for charging only and do not have the data lines connected.
Yeah. I've always been amazed by vendor branded usb cables - nokia is guilty too, they try to give the impression that their ones are different but any compliant usb cable will work.
I've just ordered a couple of Micro to Mini USB adapters. I have loads of Mini USB leads at home but only 1 micro USB which is the one that came with the phone.
be careful with those mini to micro usb adapters as a lot of them do not have the data lines connected so they are only useful for charging.
I have a short Nokia CA-101D cable that came with a 5800. Works fine with Samsung i8910, HTC Desire and Desire HD (from my experience) for both data and power.
Cable is 20cm long and can be bought for less than £2 from various places including Amazon and Ebay.
Hope this helps. John

That's cute and clever that thing, but to the OP: if you want a short cable to charge off your laptop then it won't work. Even off the PC. It will only charge from the mains.

Errrm, no. Mine charges just fine from the USB port on the pc and laptop.
Yeah, can draw up to 500mA from a standard usb port.
lol damn i got a crappy usb connection then! I say there watching 60% for over an hour so I was left thinking it didn't charge, only transferred data!
IMO USB charges should be avoided, it should be possible to turn off charging.
While it is not exactly harmful to the battery like it used to be, I have the pretty strong feeling that low-ampere charges suck. Try it your self one day, after your battery is fully conditioned. Go down to like 40% of charge and then leave it at some USB port overnight. Then watch how quickly the power drains the next day. Then compare that to a charge from 40% to full on a high ampere (1000-1200mah) connections like the mains charger or a good car charger.
The charge seems to last longer. I have noticed this with multiple USB-charging devices now and I think it has to do with the amperage / time of the charger. The lower it is, the longer the charge takes the shallower the carged battery is.
That was the feeling I had too psychotic, but when I claimed this at a different forum I was laughed at and told that a full charge is a full charge except that a USB-charge takes longer... Do you have anything to back it up?
If looking to charge in the car...
... then aren't there specific USB cables where a couple of the pins are shorted or something so that the car panel opens? Seen a thread on this site, but can't find it right now!

Actually I read somewhere that a computer slow charge actually gives you slightly more capacity. Can't remember where though! makes sense since fast charges usually get a bit lower capacity.

I think that's the case. Slow charging via USB also doesn't heat the battery up so much, so is kinder to it.

[Q] Car charger 5v 2000mA good or bad?

http://www.ebay.com/itm/5V-2000mA-U...pt=US_Tablet_Accessories&hash=item5d3 2a6631c
Will it be ok to buy it or will it harm the phone and I should just stick to 1A charger?
It will work without any issues. I am using Nokia charger that is 1,5A without any issues.
Just want to make sure there's no chance its gonna fry my phone phone somehow, 2A is still 25% higher then 1.5A .
I bought a 2.1A dual charger from Fry's last night.
Freakin thing is even worse at charging than my .7A single charger is.
I'm not buying anymore chargers unless they have written reviews from people stating they work properly.

If you run into a good charger pm me. If I'll buy this charger and it works out to be good I'll let you know.
Having a power supply greater than what u need is actually a good thing, it'll provide a more stable. current, assuming its of decent quality. Your phone will only draw as much power as it needs, in this case 1A.
I will say that cheap DC power adapters appear to wildly vary in actual current delivered. I am a little skeptical of a charger sold from Hong Kong.
And, in my experience, you WILL need a full 1A of power when doing something like GPS navigation since my 750mA (well, thats what it says on it) charger can't keep up with that level of power draw.
Anyone who is good with electronics know a good way to test the output of these chargers directly?

Well yes, but which output pins, etc. But thanks for the constructive answer
I don't own a multimeter, but my dad always had one (that was likely older than I am) and it always seemed to come in handy. Wonder if Radio Shack still has them or if its all just cell phones and toys now...

This thread links to a supposedly good charger.
It also discusses that the USB cable itself can be the difference between a .5A and 1.0A charge.
http://forums.androidcentral.com/ga...8605-car-adapter-charges-while-using-gps.html
I bought a 120V AC/DC converter for my car for charging my laptop and it also has a USB plug. Even it wasn't able to charge my phone up while I was using GPS.
So I'm going to try a stock Samsung micro-USB cable instead of the Radio Shack collapsing micro-USB cable I've been using, to see if that helps.
Just ordered the charger, 3$ is not a big hit, I'll report back in 2-3 weeks after I receive it and let you know how well it's working.

So I just got my charger today, had 1 drive with it so far with gps on and the phone actually got charged without exploding ^^
This is the charger for the lazy people http://www.ebay.com/itm/400281723676?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649
It come without a cable and from first impression it looks pretty good.
Thanks, I just bought one. Hope it doesn't take ~30 days to get to me like it did you.
A little update:
Yesterday I had 2 drives with the phone the charger connected and the gps on, first was 50 minutes second was 35, both times everything worked great and the phone got charged.
Today as I was driving back home after the phone on with the gps and the charger for 10 minutes I received a "battery temperature too hot, stopping charging".
I can relate a few factors to this, first when i entered the car it was scolding hot, second probably the car mount was also hot and 3rd my case is really cheap and chocking.
I downloaded a battery temperature widget and I'll check the battery and the charger in a few different situations, with and without the case when the car is hot.
Edit: I checked the current the phone takes while being connected to the wall and the cat charger and they are both approx 860mA so the issue comes to the phone itself.
Overheating
When I had my Nexus One I had overheating problems.
It happened when doing all of the following together:
- connected to car charger
- gps
- navigation
- screen on full brightness
- on dashboard on very hot day
The phone was never the same after the first time it overheated (unstable). Eventually got HTC to replace the motherboard to resolve the issues.
My point being that when you do all this stuff at the same time you have a lot of current flowing through a pretty tight space with very little cooling.
I am paranoid about my i727r getting fried this way as well ... so I am constantly checking to see if it is getting too hot when I am navigating.
I'm guessing at our hot summer I'll have to cut back on the charger or the gps.
Still now before it's really hot its a good time to experiment with everything icluding pointing the air conditioner on the phone ^^

Charging port going bad?

My phone has been hating chargers lately. I would say that my charging port is definitely going bad, except that there are a couple of chargers that do work pretty well with my phone. I bought a new Verizon universal car charger, and the first one worked well for about a month before my phone started connecting and disconnecting repeatedly. I took the charger to Verizon and the tech support lady took my phone and charger away for a few mins. She said that my car charger had a short in it. OK. So now I have a new one, and it is working well. But as for every other charger that I use. They all seem to have a very difficult time connecting or staying connected. If I move the cord around, the phone will begin to charge, although at a VERY slow pace. All of my high capacity chargers are doing this as well. Hours to charge the phone fully. Are all of my chargers simply going to crap, or is my charging port taking a slow dive? Ideas?
If I were you, I would get a wireless charger ASAP, to save wear and tear on your charge port. There are a few if you search. Verizon has one also.

Have you checked to see if your phone is charging by USB or ac? I ask because a lot of times my phone says USB even though it is an ac source.

It does show charging by AC. I'll check on all of my chargers to be sure. But to clarify, on most chargers, my phone disconnects and reconnects to the charger over and over. It's as if either every charging cable I have is bad, or my charging port is loose or not getting a good connection. I have to make sure my phone sits even with the charging cable, or it won't charge at all. Vehicle chargers are the worst because of the constant movement in a vehicle.

Yeah...it is still under the Verizon warranty. I have taken it up there, but I didn't want to be an ass, insisting that it's the phone, when maybe the phone is just picky about chargers. They did try to swap out my battery, as a first step. I'm probably gonna go up and insist on a replacement. I just don't see it being every other charger. I have owned several other smartphones that were power intensive, such as the Galaxy Nexus and the Droid X. They didn't have this problem.

Longer (1.8m or so) micro USB cable that still charges with 1900mAh?

Have been looking for a while to find an (affordable) micro USB cable which is a lot longer than the stock cable. When charging the phone right now I must contort myself in strange positions because of the rather short length of the supplied cable.
So I'm looking for a longer (>1.5m) cable but that one must also still charge with the same rate as the stock cable: 1900mA...
After reading some reviews on Amazon for example it seems that those cables are rather hard to find. They all lower the amount of charging current.
So the question is: does anybody know of such a cable (and has tried it himself with Galaxy Charging Current for example so it charges with 1900mA for sure  ).
Thanks in advance :good:

Mah is not a charging rate. Its known as a discharge rate or capacity of the battery/cells. You might have better luck searching for it as 1900 ma (milliamps) or 1.9A (amps). I use lithium batteries in all my rc trucks and the radios and had to do a bit of studying about them, improper charging or discharging can lead to degradation of the cells or catastrophic failure (explosion).

Those (cheap) cables rarely (or even better: never) offer the same loading charge. Especially at that length.
These work: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00AR4M04S/ref=oh_details_o05_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Using one on both my HP Touchpad that has a Charging Current app and it says 2A and my S4 is also using one. It also claims 1900mA. They are good cables for me.

Thanks in advance :good:

I have the exact same problem as you, I have tried 10 different micro USB cables and only the white cable from the S4 charger chargers to 1900 or 1.9amps.
I ordered three of these below, as other forums recommended them, they should arrive today or tomorrow, if you can wait, I will test the output on them and report back.

Already some from Amazon.de on the way and ordering from US-based sites is often quite difficult for us Europeans. However, I would of course like to know your result, so please :good:
Funny, I usually strive to find smaller (10-30cm) cables.
What I need someone to explain to me is how do you know the cable isn't charging at max intensity. Does it not charge at all, or you measure the current, or what?

Shorter cables are handy for their own purposes as well, like in a car or something. However, when I'm watching tv and the phone is being charged the supplied cable, for me, is much too short. Very awkward to play with the phone when the cable is short, hence I wanted a longer cable.
Longer cables alas usually lower the charging current so while it surely does charge the phone it takes much, much longer to do so

With $32 shipping not a viable option. Would like them though as both cables from Amazon.de don't charge with anything above 1000mA

Yea that isn't worth it, unless you order 10 and maybe sell them on ebay locally yourself to recoup the shipping cost.
I bought 3 and the company is less than 50 miles form where I live, so the shipping was only $2.50.

Hi, did you get the cables? Looking at the photos on Monoprice they look fantastic.
I am honestly tired of the crappy cables, even the S4 came in with a cable that I can't fold.
Need something like the Apple USB cable...

This thing is killing USB cables, anyone else?

In the six months I've had this phone, I've gone through about 4 USB cables! The first couple lasted about 1-2 months but this last cable only lasted a few weeks! Something with this phone is just rendering them inoperable. Anyone else going through charging cables like crazy with this device?
Had mine for a little over a month and have not had any issues with cables. But I'm also extremely careful in how I handle things I own. Not saying you don't, but I feel as though I go the extra mile when it comes to care.
Are you possibly using the fast charging adapter that came with the phone and a cable that isn't capable of handling the 2.4 amps that go through it? I could see that killing a few USB cables.
We go through a lot of cables at our house with an S7, an S6, a tablet, and a Kobo. However, that's due to having a toddler and a pre-schooler that both like to chew on them. We've gone through almost 20 cables in the past 5 years.
Upstairs, though, we've been using the same cables for the S7 and S6 that we previously used with Note4 and a G2, so they're pushing a year or two in age.
What charger are you plugging them into?

These are the two main types of cables I've tried so far, I don't see anywhere that they couldn't handle the 2.4 amps, but that doesn't mean they can't.

And I use them with the Samsung quick charge adapter. I need a cable with good length, so that's why I'm not using the one that came with the phone.
These ones specifically say they can cope with 2.4A

Thanks, I'll check these out when this 5 pack dies. Already lost one cable and have a feeling the second doesn't have much time left. So probably within a month or two at this rate!

Tbh I wouldn't have thought twice about it either, pretty obvious now thinking about it, but it wouldn't have crossed my mind that a normal USB cable couldn't handle the fast charge power draw
It happened to me too. Did you smell any burning?

Nope, no burning or other smells.
Welp, I tried the fast charging specific cables and the first one just died on me. It lasted much longer than the other ones, but that's not saying much as it lasted about only 6 weeks.
These are the cables I am using now. Still have two of them left, will continue to use until I'm on the last one and then buy more I guess. WTF
