Clearing Dalvik cache via TWRP causes apps to launch A LOT slower - Google Pixel 3 Questions & Answers

Hello guys! I have a bit tricky/technical question here. Yesterday I wanted to refresh my Pixel 3 a bit (clean flash with the December firmware, then rooted and never received OTA updates) so I booted TWRP and cleared the Dalvik Cache. When I rebooted, I noticed that some apps (especially Google ones like Youtube, built-in Camera, Maps) all suffer from a slow launch. A lot slower. Like... 3-4 seconds before the YouTube app can show anything different than the white splash screen with the red play logo. The Camera is also slow enough to see the fully black screen with the small centered camera icon for 2 seconds too. This only happens on clean start (when the app is cleared from the Recent Apps panel).
I checked the /data/dalvik-cache folder and it seems that all files are re-created after the wipe, however it's fairly obvious that the apps are no longer running from the odex/oat/whatever it's called now binaries. Clearing the app cache doesn't solve the issue, I've tried that. The only 'working' solution seems to be uninstalling the offending apps (e.g. Youtube) and then performing a clean install from the PlayStore. Then, the app launches fast as usual. However, I'm afraid that I can't do this for all of my apps (I'm going to lose preferences) plus I'm kind of afraid that the System apps (like the "Settings" app) cannot be re-installed with such ease and I will be stick with slow 'clean starts' here and there forever.
Do you guys know how I can trigger the 'App optimization' process that is observed when an OTA update is applied? You know, that time consuming screen that says 'Optimizing apps, 7 of 82'. This is when Android rebuilds the dalvik-cache and apparently I need to manually perform that. The other option would be to perform a clean flash (I'm already 4 months behind anyway), but I'm not particularly thrilled by the idea. Any suggestions on how to manually trigger the App Optimization process in order to rebuild my Dalvik?

I don't have a fix for you, but don't do that with TWRP. It does not apply to newer phones.

[Q] [REQ] Random Freezes and System Lockups

IDK Which is causing this and am trying to figure out how I can find the culprit, but my Edge has suddenly begun locking up and completely freezing where if left alone like that it hot reboots, it had to of been a recent app I installed in the past 12 hours cause wasn't it doing it last night.
How can I figure this out to see what the last processed app was before the lock up and battery pull.
Seriously I've pulled my battery at least 6 times today and it's driving me insane. Went and uninstalled a few recently installed app's but still am suffering.
Bout ready to break something if something doesn't change. LoL! I can't even be up from a fresh reboot for a couple minutes without it locking up.
Wished I knew about this awful lag beforehand, would've waited for the Note Edge 2. I don't get how a Note 3 can out perform a Note 4 Edge.
Not really an edge problem. Specific to your piece.
If you've already uninstalled the recently installed apps, then next step would be clearing cache from recovery.
If that doesn't work, then looks like it will have to be a factory reset. Do backup first.
If rooted with a custom recovery, wipe cache and dalvik and see.

I may just do a cache cleaning then a dirty flash, see if that gets rid of the problem or if it still presists to remain present.
Oddly enough if started acting up when I uninstalled SetCPU, now I'm looking for a more up-to-date CPU Tweaker/Tuner.
May also delete the Android folder on my external sd card, since I've been cleaning up and cutting back on a lot of app's, uninstalling a few everyday, installed a bunch from a backup, then been weeding them out.
Recovery > Wiping Dalvik Cache, System and Cache then dirty flashing the rom all over again seemed to work and allow me to keep all my app's and stuff.
It turns out I think it was the Xposed Module Power Nap. Uninstalled it and no more lockups.

Apps seem to restart?

I'm not sure how to describe this, and I looked through the threads some, but it didn't seem to match any of others' problems exactly. I'm running MOAR v6.2 Oa6, and every few minutes things seem to "refresh." Anything hanging out in the notification bar reappears, Lux quits then readjusts the screen, any music stops and goes away, Link Bubble disappears. If I'm using other apps, like Facebook, it goes unaffected, but if I have Pandora on-screen, it stops. If I am actively looking at Link Bubble it will stay, but the bubble goes away if it's just sitting there and this happens. It seems to be just a few apps that use a persistent notification that are affected.
I've tried disabling Greenify to see if that was the culprit, I've tried doing a factory reset, I've even tried reflashing MOAR, thinking it was a snafu the first flash. Still does it.
Thanks for your help!
Just one more detail that might be related, the Play Store seems to keep quitting while downloading apps, especially if downloading multiple apps at once. My guess is that it stems from the same cause.
Just thought I'd post an update as I think I found the solution. As my apps were seeming to restart and crash constantly, I ended up flashing stock (there was an update anyway) and reinstalling MOAR. But what I think did it, since I experienced the same problem after all that anyway, was doing a more thorough wipe. Instead of just a regular factory reset or just cleaning out the cache and dalvic, I wiped the cache, dalvic, data, and internal data, and that seemed to do the trick.

Problem with facebook app on 6.0 rom

So I installed 6.0 ROM from Sultan about two weeks ago. Since about a week, my facebook app crashed and has since not wanted to reopen. It starts the app, colours my notification bar blue (like it always does when starting up), gives me a five second whitescreen, then it kills the app.
I've tried installing older versions of the app, newer versions of the app and the same version, all end up in the same place. Deleted data, cache when the app is installed and tried then, but no luck. I have a feeling the app just isn't even installing anymore because every night I get triggered to ''update'' facebook, which is the same 41MB the actual app is when you download it for the first time.
How do I completely wipe ALL of this app's data from my phone without having to do like a clean install? Or is this a problem common with this rom/6.0 and can I fix this? Any help is much appreciated, I'm lost. Every other app works just fine.

S8+ Intense Lag/Glitches after May Update (last update)

Hi there,
The S8+ (Exynos) was the smoothest phone I've ever had. It ran perfectly, with no lag/stutter whatsoever, it was butter smooth. That until the last update...(The May update with Bluetooth and SD card stability ; Android May security patch).
Now, the phone lags/stutters/drops frames in everything - it affects the UI animations, the scrolling in almost every app (even in settings), any game (even the least demanding game), browsing, the phone also has keyboard input lag. It also scores very low scores in benchmark apps (about half of what it should score). The phone also heats up for no reason, especially during charging (it was never heating up before the update).
What I've tried (with no effect):
- Disabling all features from Settings, down to the smallest details. Disabling all bloatware apps from settings (Samsung apps, Word, etc.).
- Cleaning Cache/RAM/Junk files with Device Maintenance, Clean Master and SD Maid (and uninstalling those apps afterwards)
- Manually cleaning cache from all apps (all 300+ of them, including system apps)
- Manually force stopping all apps (all 300+ of them)
- Uninstalling all User-installed apps
- Wipe Cache from Recovery Mode
- Manually stopping all running Services from Developer options
- Setting no backround services option in Developer options
- Disabling all safe-to-disable apps (including system ones) using BK disabler
- Several Restarts
- Complete factory reset (from Recovery Mode) and instaliing all apps from scratch. Then, doing all the things above.
----
PS: Animations are not only lagging/stuttering, but they are also glitching in some way (hard to describe, but little artifacts appear when minimizing/maximizing apps).
The screen also developed slight burn in (visible on gray image) in the notification and navigation bar area, although I use it with less than 50% brightness and with AOD disabled
Nothing worked. The phone has very brief moments when the animation lag dissapears, but then it starts back. The phone is now working worse than it did with the Battery Saving Option activated before the update.
I am aware that probably most of you don't have this issue. If you know anything that could help, please tell me.
-Should I take it to warranty ? ( I'm afraid that they will open it up and it will loose its water resistance)
- Any way of rolling back the update?
Thanks.
DO you have root? Custom rom?
No, I don't have ROOT or Custom ROM. Just Stock.
Do you have any accessibility service enabled?
No, everything is disabled.

There are certain ways to check your dropped frames. A quick Google gave me this: http://www.phonearena.com/news/How-...evice-has-dropped-frame-issues-or-not_id70744
Go to www.sammobile.com or www.updato.com and download previous software and flash back to that. You can downgrade as long as the bootloader number is the same which it is. BL number is always 5th from the last number, its currently 1.

or try reinstalling the latest from here once again! May have been a dodgy installation process.

Will this void warranty or affect flash counter?

Seems like you need a factory reset.
--
Update: After a second factory reset, I have disabled all the apps in the ,,Bloatware" Section of BK Disabler (50+ non-user-installed apps) and the animation glitches/artifacts + overheating dissapeared. The scroll lag also seems mostly gone. Basically the problems dissapeared completely (so happy).
I'm currently waiting to see if the situation remains the same. I believe that the problems were caused by some sort of interaction between one of the apps and the new security patch.
Advice: DON'T disable any System apps (from BK Disabler). I've noticed that even by disabling one(any) of them, the phone overheats and a lot of errors occur in the background (checked the system recovery logs), because a lot of apps rely on each other.
Good to know... keep us posted.
Lol samcex...you are a great reader )...he already tried this)) Anyway I can't confirm this(my animation are disabled from dev option), but.... a small feeling that the phone is a more laggy is on my mind too...Something has changed.

Does enabling apps accessibility service slow the phone down?
so does anyone else experience this "press power button to unlock phone but only red light comes on for the iris scanner and screen remains black"? even after a few clicks until eventually screen goes on?(fingerprint doesn't even bring screen on)

[Honor 6C][DIG-L21HN] Several broken system apps

About half a year ago, some of the system apps started to malfunction. Most noticeable is gallery - it closes immediately after trying to load thumbnails.
Photo viewer, which comes with gallery, also crashes a second after loading, without even showing a picture.
Google Play Market crashes randomly, with usually a minute after loading, or just nearly instantly.
Sometimes after rebooting, if Bluetooth was disabled, it just won't turn on again, until i reboot it several times.
There's also random weird "fast" reboots, when my phone crashes(???) and automatically reboots, and... does it much faster than usual, manual reboot.
This is a very weird case and i was unable to find any information about this, but something tells me it might be some kind of memory corruption? I've tried to do standard procedures of erasing app's cache data, downgrading them and so on, and nothing helped.
Phone is rooted with Magisk and has TWRP.
