Just bought a new Nexus S [ GT-I9020T ] Factory Unlocked Sealed Phone. Got home, Did a full charge and started up the phone and followed the Initial Setup. First notification came up for a OTA upgrade to 2.34. Upgraded it. Everything was ok for couple of days.
Now! When i received a video call through Google talk the app was keep on crashing. Was not able to see any video or send any. Went into the camera app and it says Camera Error - Cannot connect to camera.
Read few threads and Googled the issue and tried the video chat with Qik, Fring etc and still had no luck.
Tried to restore/ wipe and it helped. The camera app worked and didn't see an error message. Until i tries to switch to front camera in the settings. Same Problem and the only thing solved it was a wipe/restore.
Tried to download a fresh 2.3.4 update and applied as an update instead of restore. Same issue, nothing changed.
I don't think it is a hardware issue. Has anyone else faced the same problem ? Is there a solution ? or is there a way to downgrade to the 2.3.3 firmware ?
Details in the Phone as of now
Model NO: Nexus S
Baseband Version: I9020XXKD1
Build Number: GRJ22
Please Help!

sweet! works every time
Argh, problem is happening again. I don't want to have to Clear Data and Reboot every time I need to take a photo. Is there a long term solution? What's the cause of this anyway?

I tried force stopping the camera then clearing the data without a reboot, but it doesn't work. When I open the Camera app, the screen just goes black. I can press the Home button to exit.
Just did a factory reset. Back camera worked, but as soon as I switched to front camera, the app went black. I pressed the Home button. Then when I went back into the Camera app, it just said "Cannot connect to camera."
On the phone with Fido now to discuss repairs. I have a stock Nexus S with Fido, unrooted.
Wowzers, this is getting serious.
I rooted my phone, installed CM7 to see if it was a software problem, and still the same problem.
Now I unrooted my phone, locked the bootloader, and tomorrow I'll be giving it to Fido to send it to Samsung for warranty repair.
Help ?
I am having same problem with the frontal camera, after using video chat on messenger 1.4, I am running CM7. please help

Hello everybody
My Nexus 5 recently captured my attention as the camera is not workig anymore. I have the latest android version, not the L however, an it's unrooted. I only have retrica and instagram for taking picture as well, but they don't seem to work too due to this problem. I don't know where the problem can be originated from, but when I open the camera app it says Cannot connect to the camera. Has anyone of you exeperience it? How did you solve it?
I tried to delete the data from the app menu, stopped it, unistalled and reinstalled the updates but nothing has changed.
Thank you
Did you already try these suggestions? http://forum.xda-developers.com/google-nexus-5/help/connect-to-camera-error-upgrading-to-4-t2564457
Camera not working can be one of the frustrating things when you use a phone. As it involves hardware nothing much can be done. I use Cyanogen based phone which has not given me any problem. I would suggest to try it as it is heavily reliable.
did you try a reboot? seems so simple, but it can fix
Purchased phone after 1 hour usage camera app says can not connect to camera. Only front camera seems to work
Is it possible to fix this issue
Try Disabling/Enabling the app from the settings app. If that does not help resolve your issue, try installing gcam from here:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1WOdULwF-m4qrKOxhZyAMDkXKiFeFYZwj/view
Try this Version of GCAM and see if you have the same problem. You can also try third party camera apps from the play store if you have not done so. Let us know.
Good luck.
Is it even not able to connect after a reboot? If it's still acting that way after a reboot it could be something stuck in the data partition keeping it active (like something stuck in cache in the photos app or another app that can use the camera). So one thing that you can try is clearing the cache for the camera app.
You can check another app that can capture photos as well.
If another app has the hardware locked up (ie only one app can access the hardware at a time) this could happen but normally when the app is no longer in focus it should release the hardware unless the software is locked up.... but then generally killing the app and or clearing the cache should release it. ....
but reboot should most cases solve it. If it doesn't it'll present that way if the physical connection to the hardware is broken (physical defect or if the ribbon got broken or disconnected) and then is a return to retailer or factory warranty issue.
I've tried clearing cache and using another 3rd floor party app and none of them seem to fix the issue only the front camera seems to function and the back says cannot connect to camera

It may be a physical defect then. Take it back to the store and exchange for a new one.

Wait so other apps have no trouble communicating with the back camera except the razer camera app itself? Have you also tried facotry reset in settings or recovery?
Btw do not use factory images, they will void your warranty.
No 3rd parties seem to be able to communicate with the back camera. It worked for about an hour then said can't not communicate with camera
I'm having the same issue but mines the front and my phone only charges if I reboot the phone with a cable plugged in... I have emailed Razer waiting on response. This is my second Razer phone I'm not happy at all... I tried reinstalling 8.1.0 no fix I'm going to try and go back down to 7 see if that does anything Razer is a ****ty phone company...
Hello,
i have a factory unlocked U11, US model running 8.0.0 security patch Dec 1st 2017
this patch was pushed to my device last week and since it installed the camera app is unable to start, nothing happens, i just get a msg: unable to start camera
using a 3rd party camera app produces the same result.
Has anyone encountered the same issue?
is there a way to resolve it? i wiped the cache by entering recovery mode, i would like to avoid doing a factory reset since i have a lot of data on the phone.
Does anyone have the apk for the HTC camera app for U11?
thank you
Remove the external sdcard if you have one, see if that has anything to do with it. If not then the problem is going to be in internal memory, most likely the data partition. Specifically /data/data/ which you cannot touch without s-off and root. A factory reset or wipe /data from recovery will fix it but you lose your data.
Check that the camera app has the permissions granted that it needs granted.
Remove all third party camera apps. One might not be releasing the camera when it closes.
Remove all the junk apps that are not from a reputable developer.
A factory reset will most likely fix the problem so start moving everything to external sd so you don't lose your photos etc and manually sync and remove your Google profile before you reset. Manually removing the profile will prevent the FRP lockout bug.
If none of these work then it is very possible that hardware failure has occurred.
u11 camera not opening
same problem am suffering rear camera is unable to open after installing new version.
and even playstore is also not opening please suggest me to rectify the problem
HELP!
Hi,
I've recently come across this issue and haven't found a way around it. I've factory reset, removed SD, disabled updates... Has there been a fix or workaround discovered? Thanks!
Same Problem here, the front camera works in the face book messenger app. the flash light also doesn't work. It says another app might be using it etc..

Your camera has been broken , the only solution is to replace, it has nothing to do with htc update
My camera was broken but it is only rear camera. How can I change camera configuration(by USB debugging because it was not rooted) to open camera app only in selfie mode?

Edit camera app and try to patch it by yourself. None would try this for you. Sorry

To HTC U11 Owners
Are you shown a "Unable to start camera" toast when you try to access your camera? You are not alone!
I've been having this issue since mid January 2019. I have been using my front camera on Snapchat as a make do.
Please go through this petition on change. org "/U11_unabletostartcamera" and sign it if you agree with my case, thank you.

Hi XDA guys, I am Aaron pippen.. My phone first had an issue of camera has stopped working, I did everything among the solution that Google recommended, did a hard reset but all in vain. I opted for uninstalling and reinstalling the app but failed still. I did a hardware test on my phone and and a "camera not available" query popped upon camera test. How can I get through this bse I did everything even rebooting the phone in safety mode plus installing 3rd party camera apps, everything failed. Could this be a hardware issue?
Thank you.

Yes, more than likely a hardware issue. One other thing you can possibly try is to re-flash your stock firmware to repair any potentially corrupted software on your device. I know you did a hard reset but that doesn't fix corrupted software.

Almost certainly sounds like a hardware fault with the camera. But as suggested above, last resort would be to backup any data you need on your phone, then reflash the firmware, to see if that resolves the problem.
What phone is it?
