I don't know if this is just an issue with me or if others are experiencing the same issue.
for some reason my proximity sensor is VERY sensitive... for example if I move my face just 1/2 and inch from the screen my screen turns on and I either press "Mute" or "Speaker" with my cheek OR i hang up on the person I'm calling when I place the phone back against my face.
This happens about 50% of the time... so every other call I make has this issue.
I don't know if I can change the sensitivity or the length of time before the screen turns on.
I'm coming form the Eris/D1/DX/Fascinate and I never had these issues with my older phones.
Any advice or Steps to fix this would be greatly appreciated.

Happens to me too, but I don't manage to hang up or mute the calls normally. I'd love a solution as well!

Which kernel / rom are you using? I have heard that some kernels have caused proximity sensor issues but I'm not sure if the issue others have experienced is the same as yours. I'd try a battery pull first, if that doesn't help try a different kernel and see if that fixes it. If the issue still persists, it could be a hardware issue and you might have to get the phone exchanged under the manufacturers warranty.

I'm using Stock firmware with bamf 4.3a Kernal
I've reset this thing too many times... installing different roms and such.. but I can verify that this is happening to another phone. My wife's phone does exactly the same thing. we purchased out tbolts on launch day ( if that helps )
The proximity sensor is located were the Verizon V is at
In between the big V is the sensor. Very hard to see go under a light a tilt the like you would if you want to find scratchs on your phone it really is between the V or I'm you can not find it. Make a phone call and get your index or any finger. And again make sure your under light and make the shadow of your finger go on top of the proximity sensor. Mine is very sensitive also.

My proximity sensor seems pretty touchy, as well.
I initially thought it to be a problem with a particular version of Adrynalyne's kernel, but I'm not so sure anymore. Adrynalyne also said that a kernel shouldn't affect the proximity performance -- that HTC puts these setting or whatever in the framework (what that means exactly, I'm not sure).
Anyway, I haven't done any exhaustive testing or anything, but I did notice one thing that seems to help keep my screen off is to have the thing pointed straight down while on the phone. My natural inclination is to have it along my jaw line, with the end pointed at my mouth. But the proximity sensor is to the left-of-center on the phone. Angling it moves the sensor away from your ear a bit. Assuming you've got it up to your right ear, that is.
I'd still welcome any other points folks might have about this.

Would this work even tho the Thunderbolt has no physical Trackball or Camera Button?
Not to discredit this app Kudos to the Dev who wrote it, but it seems like a work around and not an actual Fix.
But I'll try it out and reply back with some feedback
Here's what I do and it works for me most of the time. When making or receiving a call, once the call is 'connected' I quickly hit the 'home' button so I'm no longer on the 'phone screen' & then the power button which darkens & locks the screen. Even if the proximity sensor allows the screen to light up, the lockscreen is still there and prevents me from muting or hanging up on the other person. It's not a perfect solution since my jaw has managed to unlock the screen & randomly open apps occasionally but it beats hanging up on someone every 5 seconds.

I'll just throw my hat in that I am experiencing the same issues of muting/hanging up on people. I don't recall having the issue on the stock ROM, but have really noticed it since I've been on BAMF 1.5 with Adrynalyn's 4.4.2 kernal included with BAMF 1.5.
I was running 4.4.2 with the stock ROM before BAMF 1.5 and don't recall having proximity sensor issues. Who knows?
Edit: Anybody think that screen protectors are causing interference in any way? I have an Invisible Shield that I've had since shortly after launch date.

BAMF 1.5 is based on the new leak, which includes a fix for the proximity sensor. If the rom you are running isn't based on the recent leak for our phones, then you don't have the fix, and will most likely have problems with it.
Check this thread out at droid forums! It fixed my "problem" with the proximity sensor. Simply blow out the sensor with air. Apparently dust gets in there and jacks it all up. I can confirm big time results with this method.

Edit: All those kernel switches and setcpu tweaks over pocket lint!!! Damnitman!

Well the fix is only to hold the phone correctly unfortunately. My gf has no problem using either phone (hers or mine) but if I touch them its muted hang up bam.
One of my coworkers has the same problem as me another dosent. Its absolutely user errorish IMO.
It works with my thunder bolt sort of the home key still works. I don't mind it, moreso than buggered calls.

A screen protector was an issues for me. The first one I put on did not fit perfectly, so the top of the protector cut directly threw the center of the sensor and collected dust and gave me some issues. The second one i used was applied from the top down to not obstruct the sensor. Solved my problem.
My phone sensor will black out when I am on a call and the phone is against my face, but when I pull the phone away the screen won't come back up for some reason..
I find that it seems to reflect off the arm of my glasses, which is kinda glossy like. When the IR LED reflects back at it, it seems to assume infinite distance. Same thing happened on my Droid.
There was also a case that lacked the cutout for the proximity sensor on the Droid... screen would never turn off because it reflected the IR.
I'm glad to see I'm not the only one with this problem. It's been happening to me for a few weeks now. I've run the majority of available ROMs and kernels (pre- and post- radio update) in multiple combinations so, I believe its safe to say they are not to blame.
I'm not using a screen protector so, that can't be to blame. And I don't have any scratches on my screen either. I'm curious about this dust theory though. It may be the best one I've heard yet. Has anyone else put the air hose to their Thunderbolt yet? I think I'm gonna give it a go asap. But, in the meantime, I'd love to hear whether anyone else has had positive results. If not, I fear I may have to move on to the glasses theory. I really hope it isn't that one though. I don't want to choose between having my Thunderbolt or my sight!
Mine still does it and I'm using the leak , so I don't think there is a fix in it. If so it doesn't work. Locking the screen seems like a pain but that's the best bet for now.

One of the most annoying things of the Gear 1 is the motion to wake up the watch. Is it improved? I watched a bunch of hands on but they all tell the same story. No word about the fact that the display can't be lit all the time and that you have to do some abracadabra to wake the device. Most curious about any improvements in this department.

well you can't have screen all the time due to technology used. AMOLED. if it would be LCD then you could have screen on all the time, but without background light (like in sony smartwatch 2). i already got used to blank screen, and i just turn the screen on/off with a single button.

I know. I'm wondering if they made the watch more sensitive for motions, introduced a new or better wake up motion etc . Definitely want to know more about that.
if samsung did not mention it, then probably it's the same.

That would be a detail for people coming from the Gear1.
If the battery life is better they might have add a more sensitive option.
Btw personally I dont mind to charge the watch every night. Just some routine. I like it even better than checking the battery to see if it needs to be charged again. So if they made the wake up motion more sensitive and could still pump one day out of the battery, it would definitely be a reason for me to upgrade. Otherwise I see no compelling reasons.
I understand what OP is saying. I'm interested to know that answer as well. I actually had to turn motion off because the watch constantly stayed on while driving all day. It would kill my battery. With it off and me pressing the on button as needed, I get at least 3 days of battery life. A better motion sensor could possibly solve this issue.

what kind of issues did you have? i had none with nova.
I read a hand on today where the reviewer said it does turn on with the flick up of the wrist but that it doesn't turn on right away, like a couple of seconds delay. That isn't good. I want it to be quick like the pebble when you shake the wrist slightly the light comes on. Hopefully they tweak that before it is released....

That's what I want. I move my arm to that wrist up position to much so the watch is almost always on. I wish it had the option to shake the wrist instead so I have better control.
Personally the only good thing about this watch is the motion thing. It works like a good 90-95% of the time. Wake up is excellent on it. However, it goes crazy when your driving.
My fingerprint sensor will just stop working and I need to reboot it in order to make it work again. It doesn't detect my finger at all , it's like its dead. I have the Verizon s8+, pre ordered it and got it on 4/20. I don't suffer from the dqa issue but i have another s8 plus, also pre ordered that does suffer from the issue. Anyone know of a fix or know how we can bring this to light in order to get it fixed
Edit: I believe the fix is to go into lock screen and security, after which go to secure lock settings and select the lock automatically option, and set it to immediately. I tested it when my fingerprint sensor wasn't working, and it fixed it for me
Edit #2: That did not fix it forever , issue came back within 30 minutes, from my testing it appears that fidgeting with the following (1. Screen Timeout 2. The Automatic lock timer 3. Lock instantly with power key) causes the issue to disappear or appear. I have contacted Samsung about it and they suggested a factory reset, not giving 2 ****s about the issue, they couldn't even tell me if they were working on a fix.
Edit #3: wow, didn't expect this page to become so popular as I didn't think this was such a big issue, my final solution was turning off fingerprint gestures, haven't experienced the issue after that, I've tried to factory reset the phone multiple times.
P. S. I have been able to achieve better speeds with the Iris scanner, a key trick to getting it to unlock faster is to look right into the sensor, which is the smaller circle next to the camera in the top right corner
Should've clarified the dqa issue is not what i'm worried about, just wanted to point out the weirdness of these bugs, It's the fingerprint issue i'm worried about
Mine does the same thing....TMobile version....It works great, and then randomly won't work at all and I have to reboot
I have the same problem here.
Weird, I noticed this issue today
Posted in the other thread about the same problem. I noticed this today as well. Most of the time significantly moving the phone and scanning my finger again seems to work. I am yet to encounter this issue when the phone is actually unlocked authenticating to an app or something. So far it all seems to be limited to the lock screen in that the phone does not want to register a scan of the finger at all, as though the scanner is not there.
Same

I think it is software related. It seems to intermittent and in my case seems to be related to limited movement before scanning the finger as I only see this when trying to unlock. In other words, it seems the unlock needs an accelerator event before unlock event to work, and no movement such as a finger resting on the screen doesn't detect.
Have you tried disabling Optimize Battery Usage for the Fingerprint system app?
Mine is doing the same thing. It's almost completey random as to when the fingerprint sensor works. It's not as if it isn't recognizing my fingerprint, it's as if the sensor is completely dead or inactive. I'm tempted to return the phone and re-order but I have a trip coming up that I would like the phone for but if I wait until I return I will be past my 20 days.
Very frustrating after having to return my Note 7 like 3 times.
Does this seem software related?
Not sure it is software related. I have another S8, same carrier (T-Mobile) same firmware same software updates, version etc. Both came on April 19. Mine is having issues since I got it, the other one 7 days later no issues at all. I called Samsung and they told me if a factory reset does not solve the issue, to go to the store and get a new one. I will get a replacement tomorrow. I am on the edge with Samsung coming from a Note 7 user....

That's good to know. I ordered mine online through T-Mobile and they require me to send it back through the mail. They won't let me exchange it in store. So dumb. They also won't send me out the replacement before I send the broken one back. Looks like I will be without a phone for a few days.
I'm getting real sick of this loss of quality control with Samsung.
'
Yeah same here, but. You can call customer service and ask them to send the replacement phone at a store near you. This is what they have done for me. I will go tomorrow to pick up the replacement phone and I will give them back the old one. Is stupid but it is what it is. I think because the stores are individual franchises, maybe. who the heck knows. If the second one does the same I am pretty much done with Samsung. I had enough with my Note 7, now this. grrr
So this morning I once again had the sensor shut down. It's not just on the lock screen. After unlocking with the pin I was unable to use the fingerprint sensor to bring the notification menu down either.
I'm going to go to Verizon after work today and get a replacement.
I had no time to go and get the replacement today. However, no issues in the last 48 hours. For some reason is just working. I might go tomorrow and get a new one just to be on the safe side, I hope.

I just did it, when Imade the thread I didn't know where to find the option, upon looking further I found it.
For anyone wondering, go to apps, then app manager, then in the upper right corner click on the option icon , then click on special access, then click on optimize battery usage, then click on "Apps not optimized" and then select "All apps", then scroll down and look for Fingerprint app(I don't know if this is the only app having to do with the fingerprint sensor) and untoggle it.
P.S. I dont know if this works or not, as I have not experienced the bug for over 36 hours
Edit: this did not work, I just experienced the bug again, the fix is to go to
lock screen and security, then to secure lock settings, and set the automatic lock to immediately.

You probably just need to have ambient display enabled for new notifications. Bit of a useless feature mind you.Needs inprovment to flash or pulse but could then become a battery drain
According to an ask me anything session in their forums they are looking into making it more customizable and are also considering adding Always On Display:
Q: Any enhancements in OOS to utilize the curved display in 7Pro?
A: Edge lighting for notification would be a handy feature and we are still considering to add more features that will utilize the curved display in future.
Q: Are the edge notification colors customizable?
A: Not as of now but its something we are considering for future updates
Q: Is there any consideration of added a Always On Display feature? I currently own the Galaxy S8 and I actually like the AoD feature.
A: It's still under consideration. We are working on improving power consumption efficiency for this feature before we implement it.

The edge lighting is pretty useless as is. It flashes for one cycle then disappears. I don't understand how OnePlus thinks this is of any use. Normal people don't stare at their phones all day hoping to catch a glimpse of a notification. I also don't want to have to pick up the phone or tap the screen to check. They opted for no LED, so make edge lighting persistent and customizable. The promise of this feature was actually one of the main reasons I upgraded from the 6T. The 7 Pro is a very impressive device but edge lighting in its current form is worthless.

I was just getting ready to post this. I used it on my 6T, S10+ (untill Holey Light came out) and now also using it on my 7 Pro.
Once set up it works great.
Still don't have the phone, but does this app cause the phone not to go to deep sleep (causing loads of wakelocks)? And does it contribute to screen on time? (meaning that the phone thinks that you're using the screen while it's only the edge lighting that is on).
Makes sense to stay until cleared (comparing with Samsung devices all the time clock on). At the end this is the same display which can handle it without too much battery drainage
Does anyone else have the same issue as myself, which is the horrible autorotate issue? By issue I mean the phone refuses to rotate all the time. I find myself constantly rotating my phone in circles both horizontal and vertical as well as a combo of both. Sometimes it will rotate but takes a decade. Any thoughts or fixes would be appreciated.
Yes i do but the issue only started after the last update i believe.
I too have same issue also I wish I could set battery saver to not instantly turn auto rotate off.
I also experienced this issue
My (temp) solution: if u rotate ur phone the rotation icon on the navbar will appear and you can press it. Auto rotation on this phone is f* up
Have the issue since day 1. Fierce annoying when watching YouTube.
