notification light - OnePlus 7 Pro Questions & Answers

I know on the launch they talked about the light on the edge of the screen.
I don't see this option on my phone or I am missing something??

You're not missing something, it's supposed to come in a future update soon. I think it was mentioned in that ask me anything on oneplus.com

Think it flashes for one second. Dont have the phone but I think you can enable it in display settings somewhere

Reviewers already shown that it's already working.
I don't have the device yet to tell the steps find the edge lighting setting.

I've looked everywhere for the option. I couldn't find it.

Mine has the light on the edges with notification

I have it now. I literally tapped everything that had notification on it. Will have to investigate to find which option exactly it is

There is no option that I found to turn it on or off. It just works....When you receive at text you will receive a blue light is going to appear down the curved side of the glass. It happens really fast. They should really have an option to extend how long you will see it for.

You probably just need to have ambient display enabled for new notifications. Bit of a useless feature mind you.Needs inprovment to flash or pulse but could then become a battery drain

According to an ask me anything session in their forums they are looking into making it more customizable and are also considering adding Always On Display:
Q: Any enhancements in OOS to utilize the curved display in 7Pro?
A: Edge lighting for notification would be a handy feature and we are still considering to add more features that will utilize the curved display in future.
Q: Are the edge notification colors customizable?
A: Not as of now but its something we are considering for future updates
Q: Is there any consideration of added a Always On Display feature? I currently own the Galaxy S8 and I actually like the AoD feature.
A: It's still under consideration. We are working on improving power consumption efficiency for this feature before we implement it.

The edge lighting is pretty useless as is. It flashes for one cycle then disappears. I don't understand how OnePlus thinks this is of any use. Normal people don't stare at their phones all day hoping to catch a glimpse of a notification. I also don't want to have to pick up the phone or tap the screen to check. They opted for no LED, so make edge lighting persistent and customizable. The promise of this feature was actually one of the main reasons I upgraded from the 6T. The 7 Pro is a very impressive device but edge lighting in its current form is worthless.

I was just getting ready to post this. I used it on my 6T, S10+ (untill Holey Light came out) and now also using it on my 7 Pro.
Once set up it works great.

Still don't have the phone, but does this app cause the phone not to go to deep sleep (causing loads of wakelocks)? And does it contribute to screen on time? (meaning that the phone thinks that you're using the screen while it's only the edge lighting that is on).

Makes sense to stay until cleared (comparing with Samsung devices all the time clock on). At the end this is the same display which can handle it without too much battery drainage

So how's the Gear 2 wake up behavior?

One of the most annoying things of the Gear 1 is the motion to wake up the watch. Is it improved? I watched a bunch of hands on but they all tell the same story. No word about the fact that the display can't be lit all the time and that you have to do some abracadabra to wake the device. Most curious about any improvements in this department.

well you can't have screen all the time due to technology used. AMOLED. if it would be LCD then you could have screen on all the time, but without background light (like in sony smartwatch 2). i already got used to blank screen, and i just turn the screen on/off with a single button.

I know. I'm wondering if they made the watch more sensitive for motions, introduced a new or better wake up motion etc . Definitely want to know more about that.
if samsung did not mention it, then probably it's the same.

That would be a detail for people coming from the Gear1.
If the battery life is better they might have add a more sensitive option.
Btw personally I dont mind to charge the watch every night. Just some routine. I like it even better than checking the battery to see if it needs to be charged again. So if they made the wake up motion more sensitive and could still pump one day out of the battery, it would definitely be a reason for me to upgrade. Otherwise I see no compelling reasons.
I understand what OP is saying. I'm interested to know that answer as well. I actually had to turn motion off because the watch constantly stayed on while driving all day. It would kill my battery. With it off and me pressing the on button as needed, I get at least 3 days of battery life. A better motion sensor could possibly solve this issue.

what kind of issues did you have? i had none with nova.
I read a hand on today where the reviewer said it does turn on with the flick up of the wrist but that it doesn't turn on right away, like a couple of seconds delay. That isn't good. I want it to be quick like the pebble when you shake the wrist slightly the light comes on. Hopefully they tweak that before it is released....

That's what I want. I move my arm to that wrist up position to much so the watch is almost always on. I wish it had the option to shake the wrist instead so I have better control.
Personally the only good thing about this watch is the motion thing. It works like a good 90-95% of the time. Wake up is excellent on it. However, it goes crazy when your driving.

Only thing I miss, Notification light

I keep looking at the small LG circle at the bottom "chin" of the device and wish it were an led notification.
I have turned on the accessibility feature to flash the camera flash but it doesn't work for email?
So far no notification and quiet speaker are my only complaints. Love this phone otherwise.

Wow, didn't even notice that it doesn't have a notification light. I wonder if there's a good way to use Xposed or something to mock a notification light by listening for intents trying to set the notification light and setting some of the pixels on the second screen to act as the notification light.
I think the idea is that the second screen gives you "more information" than a notification light, but I feel like that's a bit too much information for me (especially from across the room), and a little colored LED is enough.
Try the "Led Blinker Pro" app it's not terrible and while it won't replace an actual blinking LED dedicated to notifications it does provide a configurable blinking "dot" from the main screen. Works well, doesn't drain much battery and is better than a kick in the nuts to be sure.

Everybody knows the v10 has a second screen in place of the led. I'm hoping someone makes apps just for the second screen because to me it seems like wasted space outside of a zoom function for a camera.
This and no wireless charging is why I still have my Note 5.

Curious why you'd move from a Note 5 to V10. Both good phones.
I just got the V10 (still under 14 days) and could swap to Note 5. Lack of SD Card is a killer though.
I got an after market Back for G4 for Wireless Charging and it worked fine. Hoping to get an official OEM back for V10 this time around.

Removable battery and SD card slot is what is drawing me towards the V10.
Think I'll just wait on the Note 6 when Samsung returns with an SD card tray on the side.
I only miss it for incoming calls. Used to be able to look at the color of the Led to know who was calling.. Other than that I am living without it just fine.

I moved from the note 5 to the v10 for the obvious reasons. I missed the SD card. I missed the removable battery. And the coup de Gras was the missing IR blaster. My wife couldn't understand why that would cause me to return the note 5 but that was key for me. Not to mention the incentive of a 200 gigabyte SD card and a free extra battery didn't hurt. I don't miss the S Pen because I have a note 10.1 where I use the S Pen most of the time.

How did you get it to work? I have the paid version and the light blinks during the test but doesn't work when I get an actual notification
Edit: Nvm.. Had to turn on accessibility.. I have it set to timeout after 5 mins, I hope the battery drain isn't too crazy as this would be a nice workaround

I loved the SPen. Like I said I have a note tablet to get my fix. Sammy has more options for the split screen and pop up window. The processor on the Note 5 is better but I don't know that I miss it...v10 is snappy. Feels way better in the hand than the Note 5 and the durability is a bonus. Don't fear the drop like I did with the Note 5.
I am completely satisfied with the v10...and the extra charger and card don't hurt either. Good choice for me. No regrets other than nostalgia.

Multiple pre-buying questions

Hi,
I'm seriously considering to order the mate9 at the USA tomorrow, have some pre-buying questions:
1. Does the battery lastsat least 12 hours? I really seek a phone that won't be able to drain a bettery in a single day
2. Can you unlock/wake the phone using the fingerprint only (no pressing on the power button)?
3. Any technique to achieve something similar to s7 always on display (see notifications without opening the phone)?
Thanks!
cheers,
Yoni

You can set Mate 9 to wake screen on notification but it seems to not support, at least in full, the regular implementation of interactive lock screen notifications. That said, I do recall a setting somewhere to allow text input on notifications (I think specifically for lock screen). But in daily use, some app notifications work on lock screen as expected and some don't.
See thread below for more detailed discussion:

# 1 - the battery life is better than any phone that I have ever used - and I've used just about everything. The most I have got the battery down to in one long day of heavy use is 44%.
#2 - the fingerprint reader takes a bit of patience to get it properly registered, but then it works brilliantly. The reader is placed so that it falls nicely just under the index finger, and wakes up the phone or answers a call with just a touch.
I see what was happening with lock screen notifications and it is due to funky (stupid) way the phone manages things. When an app installs the phone restricts permissions as it this is is appropriate (think you can turn this off but I did after installing most apps). Anyways, certain (most apps) had the diary content on lock screen off so I set it on and expect more normal lock screen notification behavior now.

3. Buy a smartwatch you can get a moto 360 cheap on eBay right now. I personally wouldn't use any 'always on' apps on a device with an LCD as it might cause a lot of battery drain. I haven't tried though. -something to note, huawei fixed the notification icons in the last update.
Great answers, much appreciated.
In overall would you recommend the phone? my other option is s7 edge which seems to tick all boxes only I adore bigger screens.
p.s. side question - any idea whether I can scroll using the fingerprint?

scroll using fingerprint sensor brings down the notifications.
I had note 7 and minus the s pen this is a very good device to keep me going until the next note is launched....waiting impatiently.
I tried the oneplus 3 but prefer this much more.
Absolutely recommend. Had S7 Edge and was so tired of the Samsung BS, tacky TW software and design and screen too small. Mate 9 is far better device.

3 - Regarding notifications, that is important to me as well. I posted a question about the LED, and sounds like that is a possibility, for use with something like Lightflow. For example, I have the led Green for email, Blue for task notifications, Red for missed call, Flashing red for messages, etc.
If the LED doesn't work out, another possibility is something lke the NoLed app. It will work similar as I discussed above, but simulates an led on the screen.

No front LED for notifications ?

Hello,
I am currently using a OP5, and I really like having a front LED to tell me if a message had been received, or not.
Like, I just have to look at my device for ~2sec and I know if a notification is waiting or not.
I am interested by buying a 7/7Pro, but it doesn't have this LED. Isn't it a problem as a daily ?
Thank you !

Ahh NoLED app. What an oldie but goodie! I had used that a long, long time ago and it served its purpose well.
@Khwaja7 - I used to rely a lot on the LED for notification and the app mentioned in the previous post was a good solution. I don't rely on it much nowadays because I had bought a cheap Xiaomi Mi Fit 3 band so I can see any messages and emails from my fitness band. If your phone is almost always near you, or you don't mind getting to your phone to check, you can set the OP7Pro up to quickly check by a single tap on the screen to wake the screen up.
you can also try Plus Beat from google play
It uses the edge horizontal light feature, and lights it up once a while.
Yep, plus beat might be your best bet for now...

Must be individual to the phones then. I have it installed and it shows a notification every 10 secs and in the colours set up under its settings. Phone has ambient display on.
Had LEDs on all my other phones but don't miss it at all since moving to the OnePlus 6T and the to the 7 Pro.
Good in a way since you're not always going for your phone every 10 seconds because of a blinking LED.
Notifications wake the screen up so that's enough. Can prioritize them as well so only the important stuff pops up.

I couldn't get pulse beat to work at all. This one works well but takes about 2% battery per hour the way I have mine set worth a shot and only one I found really works. Sadly the fingerprint lock screen is still there so you have to unlock a bit slower but it works well and easy. Screenshot for example as I couldn't find share button on play store sorry.
Thank you all for your answers !
I will buy a 7Pro then, and I'll see if it fits my needs about notifications alert.
If it doesn't, I'll try your possibilities
Khwaja.
Notification light is a bummer. Why they can't use the same as on the pixel is beyond me. That system just works.
Common guys give us always on display!

AOD, notification light? Alternatives.

Ordered my OP7P today buy I'm quite ready to cancel it. I knew that there's no led notification light but was 100% convinced that there will be some sort of alternative. From what I can read there's nothing like that? No AOD, no nothing. I mean - really? Any third party apps?
Please don't tell me that I have to DT2W every time or worse - lift my phone to check battery percentage (if on charge) or notification icons? I found similar thread on OPs community forum that was closed after 4 replies and with suggestion of.... getting a Samsung phone. Bloody joke.
So, any alternatives?
Well you have to tap it once to wake up te clock, and immediately after you picked the Phone the clock is also waking up. For me it's fine. For you maybe annoying. Some guy here made a notofication light on the screen but for now at least it's battery draining
Lift to wake is very sensitive where even slight movements will trigger ambient display.
I'm on a custom ROM though and this has AOD baked in but even if I was still on OOS, lift to wake is perfect for me.
I remember Ambient Display from Nexus phone and it was terrible. But at least I had notification light back then.
Someone did make an app for the 6t and I think it works for the 7 pro also. I think it's called notifybuddy.
NotifyBuddy is great, but don't use it if you use OK GOOGLE as they clash. Use pixel pulse instead
NotifyBuddy indeed is great, but it totally drains your battery. I am now using "Plus Beat" (find in Play Store) which uses your complete sides of the screen. Per app customizable, works great together with Renovate Ice

Just download an AOD app l on the play store or install a custom rom.
But canceling your order simply because of that is a little weird... Especially when there's loads of options available. Also, did you not look up all the details about the phone before ordering? If so, maybe next time look at ALL the info for the device you're about to buy.
Assuming something with no research, especially with new technology, will always bite you in the ass
I use this one here closest thing I found to an actual aod https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.newgen.alwayson
