Worth updating to windows 10? - Nokia Lumia 1020

Hello all Nokia 1020 experts here,
I just got this phone as a back up phone to try out the 41mp pure raw sensor on this camera. Coming from a s10 plus, I want to see how it can perform against it. I saw several guides showing how to update to windows 10, but it looks like there are bugs by doing so and also someone mentioned the camera quality will be worse? Currently, I saw it has a 5MP jpg plus 34MP dng, but in a youtube video I saw it showed 5MP plus 38MP dng file for windows 10.
Can someone confirm this, and also please tag me to show me how to properly update to windows 10 if it is really worth it.

Windows insider was closed completely you can update only via restore win 10 dump via windows phone internals tool
This method is a little dangerous
I suggest using Windows 8.1 Official

Just a little overkill on the camera though.
If only it has an SD card, it would probably have been the best phone this year.

Read up on that camera. It's not overkill by any means.
And I'm thinking of switching from my One to it. I've been waiting forever for that camera to make to the states.

My biggest concern is the lack of a microSD card slot. If I take my HTC One as a general reference, with apps, system files, music, a video or two, I'm looking at around 250 RAW pictures in 41MP.

The size in MP of the camera is not equal to the actual size of the photos.
They are encoded after the picture is taken and the actual size will be a lot smaller.
For instance, my 8MP lumia 800 makes 1.2MB pictures.
On top of that, windows phone apps tend to be smaller in size. Unless you plan to install like 200 apps, you should be fine with 32GB of space.
There's no point storing RAW on the phone (assuming it can even shoot it). Shooting in RAW is useful for post-processing, but if you care enough about image quality to shoot in RAW, you're not going to be doing your post-proc on a phone anyhow. Download to the PC and clear the space.

I probably should of explained a little better where I got the 250 pictures from.
I am basing this off of RAW12 uncompressed 12 bits/pixel - Bayer mask, on average a file size is gonna be around 57.6 MB (based upon this calculator)
Lets say you have 15GB left after all your apps, music, and videos. 15GB x 1000 / 57.6 = 260
You can definitely take pictures in jpg format and that will increase the amount of pictures you can take, but with a 41MP camera why would you =\

Best WP phone maybe, best phone lol ..
Nokia if Nokia used Android, added SD card slot and removable battery. That might, just might be the best phone of the years.

I don't think you get the 41 MP camera. It is all about oversampling not making 41 MP images. Look at the 8 MP JPEGS that come out of the camera. They blow the 8 MP JPEGS from other phones out of the water. The main intent of this phone is not to take 41 MP RAWs. I'm not even sure it outputs RAW files and while it can output an ultra high megapixel file most of the time people with just output a sane 8 MP file.
Not sure why this is complicated.

No I fully understand what you mean. Oversampling can solve even the digital zoom issue that phone camera has due to the lack of digital zoom. I guess my biggest grip is if you have the tech in there why not give it the ability to take pictures in RAW and throw a microSD card slot in it? Does it really up the price that much? Or maybe size constraint? Maybe I am just asking for too much. The phone is amazing none the less though.
Update: Looks like there might be a possible 64GB version

Do we actually know what the pro camera will do? Seeing the device has 2 GB of RAM (which is more than enough compared to what WP8 ever needs), and a special camera app, maybe there will actually be an option to have the raw picture saved instead of the compressed one.

It wont output RAW, RAW is handy as has been mentioned but the reality is anyone with any knowledge and experience of using RAW will be using it on the DSLR, not a camera phone.
The other part to the argument of not doing post proc on RAW files on the phone is that even if it were possible, the phone would be crippled doing the work. I have a i7-970 that will take a few moments editing a RAW file, the file system is actually the bottle neck and on a phone both are even slower, can you imagine even taking a 50+MB file within any sensible time frame and then editing it. Blimey even my DSLR takes a moment to dump a RAW file!
For most shots I generally use Jpeg anyway, or a combo of them both, if the shot is good then there is little need for post proc so jpeg usually suffices
Remember the 7 Ps (stolen from a legendary military saying)
Proper Preparation and Planning Prevent Piss Poor Photos
you can always upload to skydrive. I think for me the camera is a little overkill. I'd rather go with the nokia 925. Im not really THAT big into taking pictures. And those of you complaining about space, just take pictures with a real camera. Or download the pics to your pc or up to skydrive if space is tight.

If this ever happen, that Nokia 1020 will be selling like hotcakes. I for sure will be buying this Nokia 1020, while I dont mind it is runing wp, but I will definitly exited if its run android.
a good phone, the windows will be a good competitor to other brands
Looks great from the presentation, I always said if the 920 was android I would purchase.
Also an MicroSD would have been a bonus.

the hd2 will never happen again, the planets aligned to get that to happen and now the market is saturated with different hardware with devs spread across the board. Sorry folks but the chances of it happening are about as close to zero as you can get add in the fact that the lumia will be running unique hardware with specific WP drivers an you have a almost guaranteed non starter.

ignorant haters gtfo. the 41mp cam with all its technology isn't overkill, its setting a new standard in technology, marketing by true quality. Nokia did manages to do what Samsung / Apple can't and here fanboys are already jealous of it calling it overkill, then when Samdung / crapple does it, it became a neccessity? Please at least watch the lumia 1020 announcement before making a fool of yourself.
Having able to shoot good photo from a phone is by no means overkill.
But then in GSMArena.com WiFi hotspot is not listed as one of the features? even their older phone has it.:silly: I hope the spec sheet is inaccurate here.

[Completed] Lumia 1520 camera issue

Hi, I've just bought a used Lumia 1520 (about 1.5 years old). The phone's exterior is ok without much issue as well as the Window Phone 8.1 with the Denim update.
My problem is with the rear camera. It seems to not have the sharpness and detail that most user talk about. I'm not sure of the phone's history to begin with as I bought it off from through a middle-man.
Currently I'm using a LG G3 but will be given to my sister soon so I have to get another phone.
Back to camera. Whenever I start the camera, it will always give me blur/ pixelating/ noisy view on the screen.
In my LG G3, it looks so much cleaner and better.
When I took a photo, the full res image, 18~ megapixel one looks bad with all the noise and large pixels appear more often when zoomed in. (Btw 5 megapixel ones are very good)
It might have been with the PureView tech where the smaller 5 megapixel photo use whatever it can salvaged from the large 19 megapixel photo but is it supposed to be this blur and messy, even on this kind of resolution. I would expect to see more fine details and sharper photo but that's not the case here.
This is my first try on Window phone so i don't have much of a hands on knowledge with it aside from playing it for a while at a Window store. Even the cameras on other Window phone does not act like this from what i have experienced. Please forgive me on this long post but I hope that someone can shed some light to this problem. I would gladly provide more information if possible.
(FYI: I can't post the image link yet as I'm a newbie here so maybe in the comments???)

Doogee mix 2 - camera

Hi guys,
I appreciate that this is a specific Mix 2 question but couldnt see a mix 2 section yet to post in.
I recieved my Mix 2 about a week ago and my first impressions are that its a great phone - it does everything I want....... apart from when it comes to the cameras.
Firstly, the quality is pretty bad and a large step back from the oppo find 7 I am switching from. Both front and rear facing cameras fail to properly focus and always seem to take photos like there is a dirty lens, a sort of soft look, most obvious when photographing text, which just isnt sharp at all.
Secondly, it appears that the second rear facing camera doesn't do anything - is it even real?!? I believe its there for the optical zoom option, but even when you zoom in with the camera app, you can still cover this camera and it has no effect on the photo, therefore it is not used.
Any ideas on how to improve the picture quality? I presume its going to be a case of waiting for Doogee or some developers to take this device on to update the firmware......
Thanks

It would be great... Camera performance is the main issue of the device. On the other hand, all the other features are quite well
Sorry to put this query here. Even i haven't got any place to right it down. I also have a same problem. Rear camera not working. Bought this phone specially for camera specifications. When will be the updates release to make the second rear camera work. Even 8 MP Nokia camera takes better picture than this 16 MP. And there are many bugs. Many apps crashes. And on YouTube I have seen many videos which shows many camera app showing 4k video recording option, but I think that was after update and I still haven't received it.i show that video 1 month back.
New update from company has improved the camera lil bit. But still not a usable one. And it keeps on hunting for focus in video.
From morning all Google apps are getting closed by itself. Please help to solve the issue in mix 2
no updates have improved the camera on this phone for me so far. Taking photos of static images is ok - maybe 6/10, if I use whatsapp to take a photo of anything it always appears very soft and a little blurred. If I try to take a photo of my cat.....no chance, the shutter is so slow, unless the object doesnt move at all you cant capture the image. I do like the phone and previously havent been bothered about camera specs, but that was when all my previous phones could take decent pictures. This might be the reason I get rid of this phone in a few months, it turns out a decent camera is a must for me - I was spoilt with my Oppo find 7, which had an incredible camera

Hdr+
Hallo guys, there isn't a procedure to flash Google camera hdr+ on this smartphone o mediatek CPU. I founded everything for Qualcomm but nothing to mediatek.

Realme 5 Pro's camera app is completely useless. Any updates coming?

On paper Realme 5 Pro has a great hardware profile, but in reality its camera app is super lame and pretty much useless.
1. First of all, the stock camera app does not allow us to shoot in the most popular 16:9 ratio. Even the so called "Expert mode" is stuck at 4:3 and there is no way to expertly change this. Are you kidding me??? What kind of an expert would shoot in 4:3 anyway??
2. Second, the camera app does not offer much of a choice between different resolutions. We are stuck with only three options - 48MP, 12MP and the super small (and thus completely useless) 2MP macro. And that's all, folks... Even my old 2014 phone offers a plethora of resolutions to choose from. Not Realme 5 Pro, though.
3. Third, the camera app does not offer electronic image stabilization (EIS) for 4K video. Again, it is almost year 2020 and 4K is THE standard these days. Not offering image stabilization for 4K is like not offering 4K at all. I know that the hardware allows it, so sit on your butts and release an update that offers EIS for 4K video!
4. Last, but not least - there are no Gcam or Sapdragon Camera app distributions that work without problems on Realme 5 Pro. So not only the stock camera app sucks, but on top of that third party apps do not work properly with it as well.
So far Realme 5 Pro's camera app has been an enormous disappointment!
I really hope that the people form the software department of Realme would read this and would offer the necessary updates, so people would finally be able to make use of this phone's cameras. Owners should start sending them messages about all these issues.

No, you cannot change to 16:9 in the settings.
You only have three options to choose from:
- 4:3
- 1:1
- Full screen (which is something like 19.5:9)
See the attached image below.

Almost all image sensor chip in modern smartphone like Sony IMX586 in realme 5 pro is 4:3 ratio. So is the sensor in mirrorless MFT camera. So 4:3 image will give you native and full resolution. Any other ratio like 16:9 is cropped out from 4:3 image, that means less area covered vertically and thus less mega pixel. You can always crop to 16:9 format in software.

Again, do a little research and you'll see much more expensive phones are 12 MP. Why would you want other resolution like 8 / 6 / 4 MP? To save space? Or higher than 12 MP like 16 or 24 MP for example? Why do you think the most expensive phones in the market capped at 12 MP? Hint: higher MP does not mean better picture.

I need in-camera 16:9, so I can do my frame compositing in the viewfinder, while I am shooting. I can't be bothered to crop 4:3 down to 16:9 in post production (which can lead to all sorts of trouble, like having to chop a subject's limb off). You need to know what the final result would be from the get go.

I know that higher Megapixels do not always equate to better quality picture. However, I shoot hundreds of photos daily and I need the smaller MP sizes to save memory and also to have faster speeds in post-processing (smaller photos load and render faster in PhotShop and LightRoom than 48MP or even 12MP photos). Having the option to choose from several file sizes is just good for general flexibility - and flexibility is a thing that is always nice to have.

I don't know which other phones do have EIS in 4K, I am a Realme 5 Pro owner and this is the only phone that I care about. And it so happens that this phone does not have EIS in 4K, which sucks.
If I wanted to carry a gimbal with me, I'd be better off carrying a bulky mirrorless camera with in-body-image-stabilization. A gimbal defies the purpose of shooting with a phone (which is the phone's pocket size, mobility and portability). Tripods, gimbals, steadicams, etc. are not needed and are a burden when you simply have EIS. So the guys from Realme should put their efforts in offering this option to the users.

Gcam doesn't work at all for video on my Realme 5 Pro. It crashes with slowmo, it does not offer EIS in 4K and it doesn't even offer 4K video recording. Also, the photo sizes can't be adjusted to my liking, just as with the stock camera app.

You said realme 5 pro is completely useless because of that one feature missing, and yet you can't, and will not, find any other phones that can do that. The title should be written like: "ALL phones that can't do EIS in 4K are completely useless". Good luck in finding the alternative, this year or even the next at this price range.
Gcam doesn't work at all for video on my Realme 5 Pro. It crashes with slowmo, it does not offer EIS and it doesn't even offer 4K video recording. Also, the photo sizes can't be adjusted to my liking, just as with the stock camera app.

Video recording works fine with the version given above.

I was using Gcam 7.2
Your older version of Gcam seems to offer 16:9 (which is nice!), however, there is still no way to shoot video in 4K with this version (see attached screenshot below). It only allows for 1080p, 720p and 480p - no 4K option to be seen on the horizon...
...and just because we can have 16:9 through older Google Camera versions, doesn't make Realme 5 Pro's stock camera app less useless. It is complete garbage and needs a ton of work before it can offer anything useful to the owners.

Phones with a Snapdragon processor (like Realme 5 Pro) are supposed to work in 4K with EIS, when using the Snapdragon Camera app. So, obviously the hardware allows it, and it is just a matter of writing the right software.
Unfortunately, like I said in my original post, there are no Sapdragon Camera app distributions that work on Realme 5 Pro. Or at least not yet. So, not only the stock camera app sucks, but on top of that good third party apps do not work properly with it as well.

Complete garbage? Well, speak for yourself. I am the owner of this phone, and I think the stock camera is nice for shooting video in FHD 30 fps with EIS when I don't bring my dji gimbal. I don't shoot in 4K, only FHD. I'm sure the majority owner of realme 5 pro don't feel as strongly as you do about 4K video for a phone that cost only about USD 200-250 depending on the variant.

There are a lot of assumptions there. Name one phone with SD7xxx, SD6xx, or even the ones with SD8xx that can do EIS in 4K. Usually when a person says that the camera of phone A is "completely useless" or "complete garbage", he/she would ready to provide a proof that better phone B, C, or D do exist. And with that, I rest my case.

Are you telling me that the stock camera app is "nice" because users don't need to shoot 4K video anyway?
Are you telling me that just because YOU don't shoot in 4K, then everybody else shouldn't too?
Speak for yourself, buddy, because 4K is the new standard in video and if you are not shooting in 4K, you are just living in the past.

You want me to name one phone that has EIS in 4k?
OK, buddy, here you go: Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro shoots 4K with EIS when using the Opencamera app.
And surprise, surprise, the Snapdragon CPU on Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro is an OLDER model than the one in Realme 5 Pro.
So, if a phone with an old Snapdragon 636 CPU and only 3 GB of RAM can shoot 4K with EIS, then why a phone with Snapdragon 712 woudn't???
The answer is: because the developers at Realme need to sit on their butts and start working on this major issue. Otherwise, Realme 5 Pro is just a total waste of decent hardware.
Your arguments just don't hold water, so instead of grasping at straws, go ahead and write a letter to Realme's developer team. Maybe if enough owners write them, they would listen and would do something about it.

Is that the best you can do, giving a link to a thread that none has participated, with "reserved for video samples" post that has not been updated since last march? The OP even said: "the stabilization is not as great compared to fullHD stabilization".
It seems that you have found your solution already. Trade your realme for redmi note 5 pro. Enjoy.
The problem I found is that recording in 1080/60 fps is very laggy and not smooth. In Realme 3 60fps is ultra smooth

Interesting, thnaks for pointing this problem out.
I haven't tested the 1080p yet. Been trying to find a solution for the lack of EIS in 4K only, but I would not be surprised if there is a problem with 1080p too.
Videos are also undersaturated. In photo you can boost colors but not in video.
Now, for me the camera was the main reason to buy this phone. I record video lectures and video recording is very important for me, especially 1080/60fps (maybe sd712 supports also 4k60fps?), EIS and all this stuff. I compared this camera to camera from Realme 3 pro and recordings and photos made with r3pro are nicely saturated and 60 fps is super smooth. I had also impression that in 1080/30fps with EIS Realme 3 pro was doing better job in terms of smoothness. Definitely our hardware has potential but seems that software is messed up. Only hope is that Realme will do something with that. But we have to make them somehow aware of the problem.

Same here. I bought this phone mainly because of its cameras and also because the hardware specs looked great on paper.
However, the camera software that came with the phone turned out to be a pile of horse manure. This Realme 5 Pro deal is like having a Ferrari and not being able to drive it faster than 10 mph.
Let's start sending mails to Realme's development team and see if they would care to do something about it.
ColorOS 7 is coming to our device in February, going to be (suppose to be) major update, hopefully they will fix it in this update. Is there any plan for December or January update?
you guys should try cinema 4k camera app i tried it on my friend redmi note 7.
it was awesome it can record 4k videos @30fps with eis very smooth.
but my realme x2 cant i have been trying to root it so to know if i can get eis in third party camera like GCAM,filmic pro and cinema 4k
I'm getting 5-6 second freezes in slow motion 240 fps!!! On stock ROM. 120 is slightly better but... This if pathetic
Somehow i feel from this thread that flagship output is being expected from a mid-ranger.
Expectations from the device should be realistic and not wish based.

The reality is that Redmi 5 pro (Snapdragon 636) can pull smooth 1080/60 fps recording and 4k with EIS. Realme 5 pro cannot. And our wishes are based on the fact that in our device seats Snapdragon 712 and high-end optics (same like in OnePlus 7t). This are realistic, common sense expectations

Devices with weaker processors can record 4K video with EIS. There is no reason why Realme 5 Pro should not be able to do the same.
R5P does have the necessary hardware power, it is a matter of writing the right software. Hope the developers at Realme would do something about it.

Question All bugs of 12S Ultra.

Hey, currently i'm thinking to buy 12s ultra. But i read about some bugs are there like notifications, caller id, edge detection and etc.
I'd like to know as of you guys using this phone for months, Are the problems are solved? Are there any bugs still persist?
For users that reports having bugs for notifications are really the one that doesnt really knows how to set up a Xiaomi phone. I have been using a week already and I get all my notifications right away.

With eu ROM, it's been an excellent phone. No big complaints here.
I would like to thank you all, I'm planning this phone to buy. But there was some questions and now it is almost solved. Because when I buy a new smartphone I use it about 2-3 years. So that's why I wanted to be sure.
Regards
Can't send 1080p (30p/60p) videos via whatsapp, the videos will stutter but it's smooth in the video player and gallery.
this is on latest stable EU Rom, seems to be a known issue with chinese roms / phones.

I was using a Vivo nex 3s for the pass 2 years, which served me very good but the camera department and the lackluster mono speaker just a nono for a flagships anymore. The 12s ultra I got from aliexpress with global rom, which i think is there inside China only hacked rom and the first thing I did was to flash EU firmware and set it up as a regular global xiaomi phone. To me the screen refresh rate, camera , sound and voice is a major step up from what I was using. For a flagship around 1k, this is a wonderful best buy that I won't probably run into someone with the same phone around my area.

Accessibility services sometimes "stop working" and need to be restarted, that's about the only issue I've run into.
I'm just a casual photo taker, however so far I have found that the consistency in cameral quality was better with the mi ultra 11
Hi, I'm not sure if this is the correct thread for this. But I am wondering if your device's RAW file format for photos does not exceed or is normally 10Mb and below?
I normally post-process my shots and purchased this phone mainly because of its camera. However, I am blown by how low the margin I can edit the images on this device. I have an old mi10 pro, and a ROG6 device, and the RAW photos I'm getting out of those devices are above 50MB. The photos I shot out of this device are normally highly saturated even after turning of lica vivid. so my option is to post-process.
Is this something that can be resolved via software update or is this a hardware limitation? TIA!
So let me ask you one more question about camera. I have seen the dozens of video on youtube about camera. Is 12s ultra's camera really competeble with Iphone 13 or 14 series?

its hard to give you a straight answer as camera quality comes to personal preference.

The iPhone gives the most natural looking, clean picture in my experience. android devices tend to go more into "beautification" hence over saturation, over exposed, etc photos. to fix this, you can shoot with raw format and then post process.
but yeah, it all depends with the person looking at the picture.
going back to my question about RAW photos with this phone . this is the first time i ever encountered a device with a very low RAW image quality. the standard photos is more clear, you can basically do nothing with its raw image.
I'm using thor 13.0.1.1 rom, i just want to check with others if they are having the same issue. or will changing rom fix this?
is it just me or is there no way to turn off the alarm when the alarm clock goes off using the native miui clock app? I even set the volume buttons to dismiss the alarm but nothing. Have to reboot phone to turn off alarm
i'll just download the google clock app
