Problems with HTC U12+ external Storage - HTC U12+ Questions & Answers

Hello everyone. First of all: if this Thread doesn't fit in this forum, please move it to the correct one, thanks.
Yesterday I experienced a Problem with third party apps like MyPhoneExplorer. My device was connected to my PC via WiFi, and I wanted to move some files to the external storage of the U12. I got a message, that no third party app is allowed to move files into external storage.
Next thing I figured out was: no matter which file explorer I use, I am not able to move any files from the device to external storage. First I thought it was a problem with the SD card, but I tried another one, same result. Today I wondered about my notification sound. Usually I set on sound from external storage, but as I checked, i saw that the default notification sound is set again. I tried to change it inside of WhatsApp, but I got the message, that "adding custom notification sounds is not possible"...
Is anyone here experiencing the same "errors" as I do? But most important: why are these errors appearing? My device is running Stock Android 8, not rooted, no unlocked bootloader. Security Patch from 1. September 2018, and there are no Patch-Updates
Cheers
Stefan

Have you tied Solid Explorer app from the Play Store?

Hello Emji79.
I haven't tried the mentioned File Explorer, but I will give it a try later when I'm at home. I will report the result here.
But anyway, I am still curios with the notification sound thing.
I downloaded a random notification sound, saved it on internal storage and tried to set it as an application-self notification sound, but I still get the message that custom notification sounds cannot be used...

I don't have an answer for that.

Can be closed. For some reason my SD card is broken, and after formatting the other one everything works as expected.

Although it is resolved now, maybe this is relevant to someone. I found this https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.lonelycatgames.Xplore to be really good and with lots of features

problems with files disappearing from sd card.

ok so I have been having a problem with various types of files disappearing from my sd card. I first noticed it last week, with some apps disappearing. I knew only because the links in my home screen folders were replaced with the stock android pic. then today, I noticed all my ~9gigs of music was gone, as well as all my pictures.
I can think of only 2 explanantions. one is that this is root related, as 3 or 4 days before the first problem, I rooted with this method:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1064257
but I never installed any custom roms or anything. second possibility, is that the sd card I had was bad. I am switching to a different one at the moment, so we can at least see if that does anything. in the meantime, does anyone know what the problem may be, possibly even a solution?
I did a search or two, and it seems there have been scattered problems like this with various android phones for a long time, although I never saw that anyone found the problem, or solution.
Its either your SD card or phone hardware related.

Have you made sure you checked both internal memory AND external SD card?

[Q] Apps gone

Hi after having to switch my phone off, when I turned it on again it appears that all the apps I moved to the SD card are no longer there. I have just spent some time downloading them from the market again.
Question is why has this happened and how do I stop it from happening again
Thanks in advance
Solution
Hi Nexus.
I think you'll find that the apps still exist, they're just fragmented on the SD
card. This has happened to me plenty of times.
I've found it's only apps that are installed on the SD card and it's never
happened with apps on the phone's internal ROM.
A good way to check is to go into: Settings- Applications- Manage applications-
then tap the SD card tab. That list shows all of your apps installed on the SD
card. I found that when apps here got fragmented/corrupt they didn't show their
original app icon. Instead they showed the stock android app icon. This is a good
way to tell if the missing apps in question are still there but are just fragmented.
The way to solve this, the way that's worked for me, is to plug the phone into a
pc and mount the SD card as a disk. Then on the PC access the SD card via
explorer and right click- properties- tools- then click de-fragment.
This may take up to 30 mins as it's not as fast as a HDD.
From using this technique my apps have always returned and I can use them
with no problems again.
I've also noticed that this issue only happens if I restart or turn the phone off. I
don't understand what is corrupting the apps as the SD card is mounted
correctly and is the one supplied as standard.
I hope I've helped, and I guess this will save you from re-downloading all of your
apps again.
I'm happy to hear anyone's thoughts/suggestions onto why this is actually
happening in the first place too.
Cheers, Dms
Hi thanks so much for the answer. This has been bugging me for ages and even though I have been searching I have not had any joy solving it until your reply.
As you said it only seems to happen to apps on the sd card, and I would like to know why they are not "persistent" There must be a developer who understands the Android system who can explain why this happens and what you can do to make apps you have on your sd card permanent.
As you said it only happens to me when I re start my phone.
Thanks again for the answer
Hi. It's no problem. Yes I havn't seen anything about this issue being mentioned either.
I'd like to know what's causing it. Whether it's a hardware fault or something in the software.
It's a real pain having to hook it up to my pc to sort it out. Especially when I'm away from a pc, I can't use half of my apps.

Phone won't read my music and pictures

As it says in the title my sensation stopped reading my music and pictures that I have stored in my SD card
Does anyone know a fix to this?
This happens for me after i plug my phone into PC using mass storage...only a reboot fixes it. although, if i check on my SD card using a file manager app, it's all there, and i can open individual photos and music files...i wonder.
After that, i used this App and not seeing that problem anymore.
idk, if you have a similar issue, this would help. i hope

[Q] Memory issues

Hi,
I have a question and I am hoping you can help me solve it. I purchased a Galaxy S Blaze 4G for my wife. I downloaded the "hide it pro" app from the google store for this phone. Before all this, I have performed a factory reset. I have an 8GB microSD card installed in the device as well. I have never had a problem with installing the app, transferring of personal files which are mostly videos, until this phone. I used to have a Mytouch and had no problems, and I now have an HTC ONE which I definitely dont have any problems. So I'm thinking it may be the phone. (Galaxy S Blaze) With multiple attempts, I have downloaded the app, have gone into the settings and tried even to move the app to the SD card, after I tried transferring less than 2GB worth of files to the app which was about 20/24 files, I would try to go back into the gallery and the phone indicates that "not enough memory, please delete some items." Again, I have never had a problem with this. Can you please help? It seems as though it is saving it to the actual device, instead of the memory card where it originally was to be transfered from to the actual App. Before I started doing anything, the "System storage was 83.25/1.12GB, USB storage was 0.0/1.40GB, and SD card showed 222MB/7.39GB. After installing the app and trying to transfer the files, i went back into the Task Manager/Storage and it now showed that the USB storage was maxed out at 1.40/1.40GB and SD card showed 222/7.39GB still. What do I have to do? The app also worked fine on her old Galaxy SII before she broke the screen. Thats the only reason I purchased this for her. She loves Samsung products, just couldnt afford the S4. Can you gimme some hints on how to resolve?
Sincerely,

Which os are you running? If you are on stock ICS your SD card is located at /sdcard/external_sd. If you are on cm10 or 10.2 the 8gb card is located at /external_sd or /storage/sdcard1

[Q] Disappearing apps?

Just curious if anyone else has ran into apps missing after a reboot.....in my specific case "es file explorer" which was also an icon on my main desktop (that also disappeared) vanished....it was NOT on sd card and I had used it after installing it. I have not yet installed the system update so not sure if it's something the update might fix.
I've seen apps take a long time appear in the app drawer when restarting the phone on my old device. But I've never seen where they don't show up at all.

Well in addition to es file explorer that was on the internal storage (i'm pretty sure) I ran into the same issue someone else mentioned about all the apps on their sdcard disappearing but the reason was obvious...the phone would no longer recognize the sdcard at all...I ended up formatting it again but it's disturbing because I previously formatted it on the phone to ensure no issues and it's a sandisk ultra 64gb so it's not a cheap card issue. I went ahead and let the system update install in case one of the fixes involved the sdcard.
