ok so I have been having a problem with various types of files disappearing from my sd card. I first noticed it last week, with some apps disappearing. I knew only because the links in my home screen folders were replaced with the stock android pic. then today, I noticed all my ~9gigs of music was gone, as well as all my pictures.
I can think of only 2 explanantions. one is that this is root related, as 3 or 4 days before the first problem, I rooted with this method:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1064257
but I never installed any custom roms or anything. second possibility, is that the sd card I had was bad. I am switching to a different one at the moment, so we can at least see if that does anything. in the meantime, does anyone know what the problem may be, possibly even a solution?
I did a search or two, and it seems there have been scattered problems like this with various android phones for a long time, although I never saw that anyone found the problem, or solution.
Its either your SD card or phone hardware related.

Have you made sure you checked both internal memory AND external SD card?

My HTC Touch Cruise corrupts the microSD card filesystem very often. I installed SD Sentry to warn me of it so that I can soft reset the HTC and prevent the corruption to became permanent. I know there was a similar problem on the P3300 and HTC made a patch for it. Is there a solution for the Touch Cruise?
I doubt it's a wide enough problem to warrant a patch as there would be a lot more people mentioning this kind of fault. I suspect it's a dodgy connection in your SD slot. Have you tried re-seating the card?
Yes, I did pull out the card and put it in again. The problem remains. It doesn't fail while reading from it (nor writing), so I think it's not a bad connection issue.
My 6GB MicroSD card was acting funny. Files were disappearing but there were on the card if I read it on my PC, strange.
Anyway, I copied everything onto my desktop, formatted the card and put everything back and I haven't had any more issues since. Hopefully that did it.
I have come across another topic on this forum reporting the same problem. It appears as if more people experience similar problems ....
I have the same problem encountered. My 4G memory card has been corrupted 2 times in 3 weeks. It happen after I taken the pictures. the first time was the whole picture folder become some funny text with the .iff extension. The second time was added additional my document folder. My problem right now is that, I'm not sure is this my touch cruise causing the problem or the sd card.^o)

I found the problem, this is due to the defective sd card. although kingston claimed that their sd card without problem, however the problem gone after I placed the new replacement sd card. Anyway, I am happy now.
I had the same problem, since I use a diamond rom (from udk) it's gone...

I had similar problem after just 2 day of usage. I bought SanDisk 8 GB microSD card and put it in my HTC. After taking some pictures another day, the album froze. Went to File Explorer, the card was blank. System>Memory stated it is a 7.3 GB card (that's OK) and that it has 2 GB data written (that's also true). I tried reading data from various card readers, connected to a PC, but I had no luck. Some even couldn't see the card. I managed to reformat it and had no problems since.
I didn't have this problem when using the 1GB card included with the phone. But ever since I changed to a Kingston 4GB card (less than a month), I've encountered this problem at least 4 times.
My DCIM folder disappeared once, DCIM folder was emptied after using the camera once, the SD card was filled with folders named with random characters once, and my backup folder was emptied once.
I'm still trying to figure out what is the cause.
Hi Guys,
I have just upgraded from windows 6 to windows 6.1 ( got it from Australia HTC website ). After the upgradded , everything was working fine and I have noticed that it have improved the performance speed.
After afew days later, something funny has happened, all my programs and files that saved on my memory card was deleled. So I tried to do hard reset but the same problem happen again ( program and files got deleted from the memory )
Is everyone have the same problem as me ? Any suggestions what may be the problem ?
My device info :
HTC TyTN 2
Rom: 3.29.861.0 WWE
Radio v: 1.65.17.10
memory card : Sandisk microSD 8GB
I've never run into this problem until recently. Twice now in the past 4 or so days I've had all files and programs completely erased from my sd card. I haven't been able to isolate the problem and whether its rom related or software or just faulty hardware. I do see that you and I have the same sandisk uSDHC 8gb card though.

I got two cards one is 4GB and the other one is 8Gb and they are all sandisk uSDHC. It is really annoying that I have to backup the file to the memory card everytime.
I dont think it is the hardware problem at all. It is 100% a software problem.
Anyone can suggest what may be the caused pls ?
I just discovered yesterday that upon a removal and insertion into my memory reader on my pc the files were still there. (weird) I put them in my tilt and gone. So I soft reset the tilt and they are back again, including the ones I thought originally gone the first time. Go figure.

Same problem - Serious issue - must find Solution
HTC P3650 upgraded to Windows Mobile 6.1
8GB Sandisk has been wiped twice now since upgrade about 2 months ago
This causes great inconvnience I was about to complain to Sandisk about a faulty microSD card until a came across this article which tells me it's definelty 6.1 software issue.
If I buy a different make SD card will it resolve, I don't care I must have a solution I cannot work with this.
I would be very grateful to anyone who can can resolve this
I also noticed most folders show as duplicate when browsing the SDcard. This may be as mentioned by someone that they noticed data was still there when they plugged just SD card into PC, maybe I have restored previous data and current data was still there. Although you should not be allowed to have same folder names. This error really sucks
Running official WM 6.1 ROM with Sandisk 8 GB, I've just encountered the same problem. There was no problem for 3-4 months and suddenly today the SD card shows as blank both within device using File Manager and plugged into my PC. The strange thing is that under Settings/Memory I see that about 50% of SD card is full. Card Export also reports around 50% full. So is it just the MBR that's messed up?
i have a 4gb SDHC Kingston card and it has happened to me like 3 or 4 times in the last 3 months... once i was installing Uptodate, and other time i was installing Destinator...but i cant seem to find a pattern...!!!
All of a sudden apps on storage card fail to load.
After a few reboots they reappear at random, but disappear again on reset.
Did not have that problem with stock, but after flashing Infused 1.14 (and on) the issue appears even with the (rooted) stock rom.
Any ideas?
I am trying to determine if I need to return and replace the phone before I lose the option.
Thank you in advance.
Answering the question by myself, in case others encounter the same issue.
The external card had something corrupted, and when the system was mounting it, all mess ensued.
Backed up all the data and reformatted.
System appears ok for now
I just had this same problem or at least something very similar to it. Initially I thought it was the 32GB SD card being too big since I read Android had a 16GB external card limit. But those posts were from a year ago and when I searched deeper I read that 32GB cards were being use without size problems now. There was one issue that seemed to affect some people and that was that android could have problems formatting a card that big and that's how I installed it in my Infuse initially- I let the Infuse format it, then popped in in my Macbook Pro (in OSX) to copy over the contents from the previous 8G card. I believe I have hidden files set to show, so I should be copying over everything- though, could this method of upgrading the card be a problem too?
It worked for a couple days, but last night during a reboot I tried to access the app tray and didn't know the card was still being scanned. It froze and I couldn't get past the secondary media scan after many tries. I didn't realize that apps were being automatically installed to the card.
Anyway, I was gonna return the card, but after reading your post, I'm thinking again about corruption due to poor formatting as the problem, so I'll try it again when I get home. Thanks for your post. I really want to be able to use this larger card so I'm keeping my fingers crossed this will solve the problem.
BTW, how did you format the card? I have Win7 x64Pro on my MBP as well if I need to use windows, but did you use FAT, FAT32, ExFat? I'm still a 'droid noob ;P. Thanks again!
-- Infuse 4G Rooted with stock ROM
Hi after having to switch my phone off, when I turned it on again it appears that all the apps I moved to the SD card are no longer there. I have just spent some time downloading them from the market again.
Question is why has this happened and how do I stop it from happening again
Thanks in advance
Solution
Hi Nexus.
I think you'll find that the apps still exist, they're just fragmented on the SD
card. This has happened to me plenty of times.
I've found it's only apps that are installed on the SD card and it's never
happened with apps on the phone's internal ROM.
A good way to check is to go into: Settings- Applications- Manage applications-
then tap the SD card tab. That list shows all of your apps installed on the SD
card. I found that when apps here got fragmented/corrupt they didn't show their
original app icon. Instead they showed the stock android app icon. This is a good
way to tell if the missing apps in question are still there but are just fragmented.
The way to solve this, the way that's worked for me, is to plug the phone into a
pc and mount the SD card as a disk. Then on the PC access the SD card via
explorer and right click- properties- tools- then click de-fragment.
This may take up to 30 mins as it's not as fast as a HDD.
From using this technique my apps have always returned and I can use them
with no problems again.
I've also noticed that this issue only happens if I restart or turn the phone off. I
don't understand what is corrupting the apps as the SD card is mounted
correctly and is the one supplied as standard.
I hope I've helped, and I guess this will save you from re-downloading all of your
apps again.
I'm happy to hear anyone's thoughts/suggestions onto why this is actually
happening in the first place too.
Cheers, Dms
Hi thanks so much for the answer. This has been bugging me for ages and even though I have been searching I have not had any joy solving it until your reply.
As you said it only seems to happen to apps on the sd card, and I would like to know why they are not "persistent" There must be a developer who understands the Android system who can explain why this happens and what you can do to make apps you have on your sd card permanent.
As you said it only happens to me when I re start my phone.
Thanks again for the answer
Hi. It's no problem. Yes I havn't seen anything about this issue being mentioned either.
I'd like to know what's causing it. Whether it's a hardware fault or something in the software.
It's a real pain having to hook it up to my pc to sort it out. Especially when I'm away from a pc, I can't use half of my apps.

I am absolutely and completely stumped in what I should do and can do.
My phone has that restriction where the SD card is located in a different folder and you cannot install apps to it. That frustrated me, so I searched for a fix. I came across one that allows me to change where to sd card it mounted to fix just that.
Of course because I'm a giant boob I didn't backup before, and to my horror I get a bazillion crash errors on restart, the main one not being able to save data that isn't internal. I did a factory reset hoping it would fix it, but It did not.
I suppose I should add my phone is of course rooted, and that I do understand the basics of flashing my phone (but like nothing exists for this phone). I also apologize for this possibly being in the wrong forum, but I'm certain one doesn't exist.
Tl;Dr: tried to fix sd card limitations, broke mounting, atleast I think.
