The Play Store "Error retrieving information from server. RPC:S-5:AEC-0" problem seems to be quite pervasive across a wide range of devices.
In summary, the device suddenly begins to toast the above error message when updating or re-installing paid apps. The "(installed) My Apps" list is sometimes truncated, and the "(all) My Apps" list displays the error message and a retry button. Once it appears, for some users (myself included) even wiping and re-flashing the device won't make the error go away.
I just got off the phone with Play support. Even though I had just flashed my device, they asked me to remove my Play account from system settings, then reconnect it by opening Play and following the prompts. This produced the error.
They then asked me to wipe data on Google Services Framework, reboot the phone, and try to check my apps lists in the Play app. This, also, did not work.
After about 10 minutes I received this message from the Play support representative:
Hello!

AUGH
They've been working on this known issue for almost three months, and there are no workarounds at this time?!? I can recover using a Nandroid but some of my apps require Play authentication ------ is there any way around that?!
Has anyone else found the magic bullet which kills this error dead even when it persists after a device wipe and reflash?!
Getting the error here on 2 asus tf300tg a gs2 and sony mint.

Early on, before I wiped and re-flashed my device, I was able to trick it into working by clicking through the error and trying again, rapid-fire. Eventually that stopped working.
That worked the last few days indeed, but since a hour or 4 5 it's completely broken.

Interesting. I logged into Wallet and changed my default card, then switched accounts in Play, first to another Google account, then back to my regular account. I was able to purchase an app! ........but no joy on the updates.
Would be nice if we could figure out a workaround or steps that we can take like the previous post to rebuild our "corrupt" Google Play accounts. This is definitely a Google server-side issue and has very little (or nothing) to do with our devices. Currently i am unable to access my paid apps (or any previously downloaded free apps) on 3 different devices using my primary Google account. I have spoken with Google tech support (3 times now) and they've acknowledged there is a known issue but currently have no resolution or workaround. This has caused a couple of my paid apps to stop working since the app no longer shows as purchased. This seems to be an issue that has become more prevalent in the past week with more and more people reporting the same problem.
Before anyone tries to offer the standard advice of clearing data for Google Play and Google Framework...or removing and re-adding the Google account...those fixes do not apply for this issue since the account has become corrupted in some form or fashion on Google's servers. In fact, one Google tech suggested that I create a new Google account and contact the developer of each of my paid apps and have them transfer the app to my new account...WHAT??? Unfortunately that may only be the only real viable option at this point for people that have been affected by this obvious bug in Google's system.
Suddenly my updates are working for paid and free apps. *Did someone fix something or is this a fortuitous occurrence?!?

It looks like Google actually fixed the issue with corruption in the Google Play profiles. I noticed my apps were showing up again this morning. Still wasn't recognizing my paid apps...but clearing data on Google Play Store and Google Services Framework and then a reboot fixed that issue. So everything is working on all my devices again and I think my blood pressure is lower now as well

Google may have fixed this problem for some but many still have the same issue.
Hello. Since updated to Google Play Services 7.xxx I just realized this.
As screenshot attached, my device shows up as 2 devices. How to remove device at the bottom?
Had already dig in on Google Dashboard, delete here and there, no luck.
Thanks for the help.
Do u have multiple users on this device enabled?

No. Even guest mode.
Now it getting worse. My OCD senses are tingling...
Here's mine. Not sure what the hell is going on with play services.

Are you perform factory reset or flashing a ROM within these range?

Yes but I've always chosen to continue from a backup in the setup screen. I figured it would keep the data the same. All these duplicates might be why Google Fit hasn't worked for weeks for me.

For me 8 March is from upgraded to 5.1 and 12 March is from factory reset. That's it.
It seems that even make additional copies.
From my theory is every factory reset we make new DNS host name for our device. Maybe that's the culprit.

I don't think it's a biggie. It happens to me quite often, usually when I flash a new or updated ROM. External services will detect that as a different device when I connect.
My guess would be every time you flash and sign in with google it creates a new android ID. Thus google thinks it's a new device linked to the same account. I have location history turned off so I'm not seeing this behavior. One thing to try is Titanium. It has a feature that allows you to restore android ID from a backup. Menu/manage android ID. Create a new one and see if it adds another device to location history. If it does that's the source of the issue. Then you just have to figure out how to flash the ROM and gapps and restore a previous ID before signing in.
As much as I have been flashing lately and looking at my list it seems that the date the duplicates started was when play services 7.0 released. Otherwise everyone on XDA would have a massive list from clean flashing ROMs. It's almost like the same issue with the set up screen. If you choose set up as new device too much sometimes the servers stop updating your back up.
This is pretty annoying, I have close to 20 entries... I am flashaholic.. .
Will try out the TiBu with update zip and see if it resolves the issues.
Google need to fix this.
Hello,
Did Google fix this issue on nexus device ? Because i'm having it on my Note 3 (SM-N9005)...
Really annoying.

Apparently no. Still have >1 month old entries and still not deleted.
nO..........but I really really really wish there was a way to fix this. I really really really wish there was a one button kill all to wipe ALL history of EVERYTHING from the server to start fresh. Currently you can wipe backups, location history, and Google Fit data but there is no way to remove these device entries.
same here but don't know what it's disadvantages to us
deleting all data in /data/data/com.google.android.gms causes this too... I have 4 devices in the list now... the problem is that they are stored in the google account and not on the phone.
Google should allow to delete old entries. Also this messes up things in GMS.
I am trying to contact google for this but it's hard.
Also, deleting that directory seems to fix the problem with google play service eating the battery.
Got the same problem with you guys, and still haven't found the solution yet.
Please update here if there's someone who knows to resolve this issue..
Hello Helpful People,
Clearly we are a niche group who love our P8 Max. Wondering, does anyone else have the issue where Google Play Services stops working on their P8 Max? This has happened to me a fair bit and can only be resolved with a hard reset and reinstall. I now have rooted and removed some or most of the the bloatware, hoping this fixes it. Does anyone have any suggestions?
Michael
Hey michaeldanielbourke,
This has happened to me as well. Not sure what the cause is but I've done a few restores due to this issue. One thing I noticed is that when I launch Maps and it asks for my search history...if I say Yes, there is some process that happens that states that Google Play Services is no longer supported on my device.. Subsequent launches of the Play Store causes an open and close and I can't get it to launch. I also noticed that my Google account was automatically removed from Accounts in Settings. So far I've avoided this by not implementing Maps search history, but I'm not really sure what the root cause is.
If anyone has any other feedback please post. There's definitely some quirkyness with this device, but I guess that's expected with an imported device. Overall I'm really happy with it and prefer it over my Note 4. My Note seems like a toy compared to this ...but I keep my Note 4 around because it takes great pictures and video which I do a lot of.

Interesting. Well I rooted my phone (finally) and removed the bloatware and the Huawei account information. So, hopefully this should work. Shall update
Is your phone rooted?
Michael
Yeah I was rooted, but it was happening when I wasn't rooted. Before I rooted I took a nandroid backup, so right now I'm running with TWRP with no root.
12/2/15:
Just wanted to update this thread. I continued to have issues with my Google account. For some reason it would remove itself for no apparent reason, other than a conflict (I think) with the Huawei ID or Cloud ID that is built-into the phone. I seemed to have solved this by removing or freezing all of the installed Huawei services and apps (with root). I'm curious if other folks have had this issue as well.
With root and all of the Huawei apps frozen, the phone is really running well. The only downside for me is the camera image quality. It's not bad, but I'm kinda picky about family photos I take.
I still can't get over how my Note 4 looks like a toy compared to this phone. I hope Huawei continues to crank our larger format phones. 6.8" may seem big to many folks, but I think it works well.
Hey peeps. 3 weeks and countless hours - that was how long it took for me to get GSM into my new machine and getting it to behave as it should. Turned out the first most basic method, dated July 2020, worked. Read in many forums that this machine, regardless of EMUI version, could not resolve the Play Protect issue, but for some miraculously reason, mine worked. So just to be safe, I used the machine for about a week for everything except activities which needed SIM, i.e. calls and line-dependent texts. Banking, work emails and platforms (including all firewall and security protocols), games and apps including those which require my Gmail account, wired/wireless connection both incoming and outgoing - all was working as it should throughout the week.
Then when it came to officially switching over the last remaining part, i.e. cloning over data (mostly texts, phone book, call records and stored media) from the old over to the new, using Huawei's Phone Clone app. So I was careful not to select any apps to clone (the first attempt I blindly clone the whole machine content without customizing which caused GSM to start acting up with the notification & Play Protect issues the minute the process completed, then it was back to square 1 restarting the entire process), so I 2nd attempt I only selected texts, directory, call history and media to be cloned over. Did not even pick anything which is remotely associated with any app, e.g. Whatsapp media where left behind worried that the issues would resurface.
Unfortunately, to my despair, 2nd attempt concluded the same with the 1st, i.e. GSM is no longer Play Protect - aside from notifications, which I can easily ignore, more importantly is my banking, work and Gmail-linked games/apps are as good as dead. So at this point I am at wit's end on how to get my records and stuff migrated over. Of course I could resort to traditional approach of uploading into Cloud and/or OTG/Hisuite sync, but troublesome and wouldn't be seamless or complete.
So wanted to check with the community here, if anyone on any Huawei devices (since GSM is properly in place already, this issue on data migration would not be device-dependent) have any similar issues in the past and managed to uncover alternative methods to get this done. Worse case scenario, will have to resort to the conventional methods, though not ideal but not left with much choice now that my P20 Pro is nearing its shelf life.
Thanking all in advance for reading and/or responding with any viable recommendations. And apologizing in advance for the long-winded post and/or if there was already a similar thread in the past on the same subject which I may have missed.
Cheers,
-K-
Hi there,
did you ever got over this?
Cheers

Yup, finally got over this after countless attempt. End up phone-cloning just the media only, nothing else. Apps were reinstalled one by one on the new machine, messaging history and phone book via cloud, phone history unfortunately can't be migrated. Avoid signing in to Huawei account, tho it's easier to use that service to copy stuff over. With that, everything in order and GMS remained intact and behaving as it should - its been 4 weeks now since officially moved over to my new Mate 30 Pro 5G with a fully-functioning GMS/Playstore which is Google Pay Protect certified.

Hi you said you had Google Pay Protect Certified? Is that meant you can use your phone for contactless pay like the pay wave in Visa?
If it is the case, how you installed your GMS? I got GMS installed but horrible delay of Gmail notification and don't have the Google pay protect certified therefore couldn't use contactless pay in my phone. Otherwise work okay.
Hi,
I purchased a new phone a Motorola Edge S (hardware SKU XT2125-4), unfortunately it is a China ROM phone which means it didn't come with Google play store. This was side loaded and I am able to install apps from google. But I have SO many issues with this and I am hoping someone has something helpful to actually use this phone
1. When I try to use Google setup a nearby device (to transfer everything over to this phone), it simply can't find my new phone (despite having bluetooth and location on for both phones
2. I can't restore contacts from google drive even though I can connect
3. I downloaded the MAGISK app, however the file browser is unable to install as the app is not allowed. The toggle to trust the app can not be changed.
I am at a loss as to how to actually use this phone as essentially it's useless at the moment. Any help would be appreciated.
It is already running Android Version 11
Baseband version M55_HI20_209.334.01.60R NIO_PVT_SUPERSDS_CUST
Kernel Version 4.19.136-perf+
Build Number RRN31.Q1-20-17-6
I can provide any / all other information if needed
If the solution is to root the phone, I'm ok with that too, but see point 3.
I'm in the same situation. Purchased the XT2125 as well. Got the Google stuff working by side loading the play store, services and framework. However, initially, while everything else was working, the contacts wouldn't sync. After a few hours of searching, finally came across an article which said that I also needed to side load an apk called google contacts sync and give it permission. Contacts started syncing after that. Fast forward a couple of days and a system update later, SMS are delivered with really long delays and outbound ones fail. Google maps crashes constantly and navigation just doesn't work. I don't know what to do with this phone now honestly, since I need Google maps navigation on a regular basis. Have tried reinstalling maps, resetting permissions, clearing cache and data but nothing seems to work. And with the SMS delay, I can't sign on our complete transactions on a lot of apps because the SMS usually arrives after such a delay that the code has expired. Feels like such a waste of money this phone even though it's supposed to be great bang for the buck.
I am hopeful that when they release the Moto G100 (same phone actually), that we will be able to flash it with this ROM to make it usable.

Yeah, I think it's being released in a couple of days. Anyway, I did a factory reset and the maps issues sorted out. Had to go through the pain of sideloading google again but the device is being shown as google play certified, but yeah, would be nice to just have the international rom on it.
Were you able to make any headway with your device? I didn't put a sim in mine but the rest of it seems to be working ok, except Youtube Vanced isn't signing in with a google account.
