Chinese variant P20 - Huawei P20 Questions & Answers

Hi all,
I purchased a P20 chinese variant (EML-AL00) and am living in Canada.
Somehow I have not received the global update to 9.0, even though it was supposed to be rolled out internationally two weeks ago. I am still on 8.1.0.175. Anyone run into the same issue, or know of a way to get this OTA update? (Note: I don't have the bootloader unlock code so I can't manually flash.)
Thanks.

You may need a chinese sim card to get normal OTA...
You should update via eRecovery with the Firmware Finder's DNS and an approved and registered build.

[Q] anyone with US c567 rebrand to ...

Anyone with US c567 rebrand to either c636 or c432? I'm looking for experiences, feedback. From what I've read of one or two user experiences, no issues except possibly some icon changes for mobile signal.
It seems that those two models consistently receive updates on a semi-regular basis and at this point, I can't really see any downsides to rebranding.
I've done it

I've rebranded to both of those regions, other than having to unlock the bootloader and install the right firmware I haven't had any problems doing it, prefer the European (c432) firmware due to software differences, as far as updates go, I don't think that rebranding will help you get ota updates as those check your imei numbers and sim, so if you have a US (c567) and rebrand to a c432 you still won't get any official updates.

Thanks for the last bit of info, I was unaware updates were tied in such a way to IMEI and SIM.
So if I go the rebranding route, once complete, I will have to use FF or FunkyHuawei if I don't want to wait for a regular OTA?
FF

Yeah, you'll have to use one of those, FF will show you the available ROM, but you still might not be able to install it as the installer checks your imei and sim and will check to see if there ROM it's authorized for your device. There it's a "recovery" that you can put on your device that doesn't check however. I hate having to pay (funky Huawei) for something that's free.
I went from C185 (Middle East/Africa) to C432 (Europe) and have received updates whilst in Kenya with Kenya sim card and in USA when on holiday with a US SIM card on the C432 stock.
I've also rebranded recently free romance US version to C636. No updates to the C636 yet so don't know if I will receive.
But I have also heard of multiple people rebranding and getting updates on their new versions.
I brand from 567 to al00 and I get updates in both us and Philippines

Nokia 3 Android 8.0 update (UK)

Can I ask any SIM FREE Nokia 3 users in UK if they have received the Android 8.0 update as of May 19th?
I suspect my network could be to blame for the delay, as I'm using PLUSNET (which piggybacks the EE network)
The device is currently on android 7.1.1 and was purchased from the carphone warehouse in Norwich brand new and SIM free some six weeks ago.
I'm also experiencing a strange occurrence after a factory reset.
The EE app keeps getting automatically installed after a factory reset, which is strange because I'm not an EE customer!
Can anyone confirm their update in UK or explain why the EE app is getting installed to a sim free device after initial set up?

It's not just you I am on Three UK as is my friend both devices are sim free and his has never been rooted or bootloader unlocked. The Carrier app's get installed due to some .xml settings in the CDA Partition which check the network id number and then install the appropriate app if one exists.
Not sure why the UK is one of the last to get the official Oreo update but hopefully it will very arrive soon. :fingers-crossed:

Well, I've got the update but the process is a little long winded and had a hiccup along the way.
So, you need to remove the SIM card.
factory reset.
Sign into WiFi and Google account.
Select to restore your back up (this can be skipped if desired)
Once the back up is restored, connect to a Finland VPN
(I used express VPN from playstore)
Check for system updates, it will give you the android 8.0 notification.
Select to download
(I had to download it twice as the first time I encountered a verification error)
Allow to install.
After reboot replace sim card.
The process takes roughly 45 minutes to complete.
Edit
I've just read on Reddit there is an issue with all Nokia devices receiving any system updates in UK that Nokia / HMD will not confirm.
It's not good we have to factory reset and select other nations VPN to get system updates.

No it definitely isn't. So you're saying India VPN didn't but Finland did? I will keep that in mind. Perhaps it has to do with the fact that your phone is the European version

Cheers for the info. :good:
Is the TA-1020 available in India
If it's not then that would explain why the Indian VPN did not work.
I will wait and see if they sort it out as I am on the Oreo Beta anyway and now they have released the Kernel source my aim would be to try build LineageOS or some other OS.
If anyone with the TA-1020 who has installed the official Oreo could pull the system, boot and recovery with SPFlashTool for me that would be great as I would like to use the none beta Oreo for building the device and vendor trees. :fingers-crossed:
PS:
BTW What is the Kernel version on the Official Oreo as they have released the 3.18 version and I was kinda expecting the 4.4 version.

3G network on Oreo was bad for me, only 1-2 bars while on 7.1.1 is 3-4 bars (4 bars mostly). I hope that they fixed this issue.

I've haven't yet had under full strength signal on 3G or 4G, but I've only had the 8.0 for update 24 hours so I'll keep my eye on it.
Battery is much better on Oreo, last 3 to 4 hours longer than 7.1.1

Did you try the VPN trick without the factory reset?
I don't understand why HMD aren't providing the files to flash manually as that would help get the update out to the UK faster.

OK, so maybe it's a bug that clears up after the factory reset. I know that on reddit some people are saying that just removing the SIM and clearing the Google Services Framework works as well so I'll give that a try and see what happens.

Yes I read the Reddit posts regarding clearing Google play services data and that was the first step I tried (as well as removing the sim)
That didn't work so I then spent last weekend using the factory reset / VPN method, but I found the India VPN method didn't work either.
I did not have any success with getting the 8.0 update notification until I factory reset and tried the Finland VPN, which worked fine.
I would be careful using the VPN method as one person on the Nokia Support forums has had issues with mobile data:
https://community.phones.nokia.com/support/discussions/topics/7000025647
It could also be related to the fact that there are two different versions of the Nokia 3, the TA-1032 and the TA-1020. The TA-1032 seems to be receiving the Oreo update but the TA-1020 seems to have been forgotten.

Honor view 10 UK, Stuck on May patch, how to force upgrade to June or July patch?

Title pretty much
I have a Honor view 10 that has never been rooted or any major modifications but is stuck on older firmware. Firmware Finder from the play store no longer works due to Huawei changing how the system works, A way where i could update without losing data would be appreciated
[if you use the full update with the dload method... You will lose all data.
Only way not to is just keep using system update...I just received the b161 update this way and I have a India c675 model in America and I received the official ota with 0 problems.

install the sim and connect to wifi
Check you're updater app
you Need the same region SIM (for example if u bought the device from India, you have to insert Indian SIM to get Oficial OTA )
or you can try Dload Method to flash full Rom

Ok, So I'm in the UK and the only update I had was the 162... But I'm using two SIMs. In the SIM1 I have an UK SIM and in the SIM2 I have a Spanish one... When I was trying to update with that configuration, it told me I didn't have any updates... I removed SIM1 and left only the Spanish one in the SIM2 and TA-DA! I have the 163 available and installing now! Just in case you can do something similar! If you have a family member/friend with a SIm from a country where an update is available, you can ask for it for a minute so you can update!

Updating unlocked s9+ (sm-g965u1)

Hi have the original US sprint version of the samsung s9+ which I had recently unlocked and unbranded from an unlocking service through team viewer. The model number is now SM-G965U1 and the baseband version is G965U1UEU3ARG7. I noticed on websites like sammobile that there are updates to this software for this phone model. When I click update software on the phone it states that I have the latest one. Is this normal or should it be able to update to later firmwares such as ARK5? I am using a t-mobile sim card in the phone currently. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

OTA software updates are controlled by your carrier, in your case, it is T-Mobile.
If T-Mobile does not offer an update for SM-G965U1, you will not get a notification to update and it will not find any updates when you check for them.
But, if there are updates for that model number available to download from Sammobile, just download the firmware and flash it via Odin onto your device.
Note:
When the unlocking service unlocked your device, they might have only used a small part of the software from S-G965U1 and not the entire firmware because the entire firmware might not be compatible with the model that your device originally was.
For example, they may have only used the bootloader from SM-965U1 or only the system.img or only the modem.img or any combination but not the entire firmware, if this is the case, flashing the entire firmware might cause issues.
I would email the unlocking service and ask them if the entire SM-G965U1 firmware can be flashed or at least ask what files were used in the unlocking process and which parts of SM-G965U1 firmware are safe to use or not.

I don't think you understand how things work when it comes to updates on android devices. It isn't like a Windows PC where any and all new updates are offered/pushed via Windows Update to every device that has Windows installed.
OTA updates are controlled and offered by your carrier, you will only get the update if your carrier CHOOSES to offer the update to devices on their network.
Just because your device manufacturer has released an update, does not necessarily mean that your specific mobile carrier will offer it to their customers, some devices never receive updates from the carrier for "this" or "that" device whereas other carriers would offer the update to those devices.
It's all a matter of who your carrier is, not what device you have.
For example, Samsung could release an update for S9+, then "this" carrier could choose to offer the update to the S9+ devices on their network and they would be able to update via OTA update through system settings.
Or
Samsung could release an update for S9+ but "that" carrier could refuse to offer the OTA update to devices on their network. In this case, the device can still be updated by manually downloading the update via the internet and then manually flashing the update via Odin, instead of via OTA update through system settings.
To put this in perspective in comparison to a Windows PC vs android, if Windows Updates were handled the same way that android updates are handled.......
The way android updates are offered by your carrier, for Windows PC, the equivalent of this would be Microsoft offering Windows Updates but then the updates only being available based on who your internet service provider is. In this theoretical example, your internet service provider may or may not allow the update to be installed on your system. If your service provider doesn't allow the Windows Update to be installed through their network, you would have to manually download the update and install it yourself instead of using the Windows Update Service to install the update automatically.
Does this help you understand how the update system is handled when it comes to android updates?

I am not in the same situation, and I don't understand why the update doesn't just get updated from settings=>system &updates=>software update.
I remember having some problem with moving to ten though. I messaged huawei a polite query through one of their apps. Probably Hicare. They didn't respond, but within 36 hours an automatic update came through... coincidence? Not sure, but worth a try rather than try to procure an OS Sim... don't think that sounds too legit in this day and age.

I reached out to hicare and the rep said my device belongs to Singapore. But sadly there are international limitations. She said updates are released depending on region and so foreign devices might not receive the update on time or won't receive it at all. She suggested I try to update my 20x using HiSuite. She also recommended I talk to huawei customer care in singapore. She provided the weblink to them.
When you called hicare did you chat with a rep? How did you communicate this to huawei that resulted in a solution?
What do you suggest?

Unfortunately this doesnt work. I changed language to chinese and singapore in hi care. No update.
Huawei in singapore emailed saying since my device is made in singapore that the only way to update is to use a sim from singapore and be in the singapore area which is ridiculous.
I've looked at sim cards on amazon and ebay. Apart from the cost theyre shipping times call for delivery in June which again is ridiculous. Do you know of a way to get a singapore sim card soon in USA?
.
It has nothing to do with simcard just factory reset or install by pc hi suite

Hi TAJ_Rocks,
Thanks for the followup. Its been factory reset since I got the used phone last week from ebay already reset. I already installed hisuite and am still unable to update that way.
So I think the 2 other options are dload method and sim card from singapore.
But if I use the sim card option to update to 10, will huawei send security updates afterwards?

First of I dont think simcard is needed for update. Even if u bought and get update. Afterwards ull receive updates automatically no need for simcard again.

Hey TAJ_Rocks,
Yeah thanks for that. Someone on another one of my threads said the same thing. I plan to use the dload method to install 10 on my phone. The thing is, I need an Adapter Cable Type C to USB A. I ordered it and am awaiting delivery to use in the dload method. Hopefully it shows up this week fingers crossed. Thank for your help and replies!

Problem now is DLOAD method only works if we have the firmware for our model EVR-L29 and region code C636 for example.
But I cannot find them. So now what?
