Nokia 3 Android 8.0 update (UK) - Nokia 3 Questions & Answers

Can I ask any SIM FREE Nokia 3 users in UK if they have received the Android 8.0 update as of May 19th?
I suspect my network could be to blame for the delay, as I'm using PLUSNET (which piggybacks the EE network)
The device is currently on android 7.1.1 and was purchased from the carphone warehouse in Norwich brand new and SIM free some six weeks ago.
I'm also experiencing a strange occurrence after a factory reset.
The EE app keeps getting automatically installed after a factory reset, which is strange because I'm not an EE customer!
Can anyone confirm their update in UK or explain why the EE app is getting installed to a sim free device after initial set up?

It's not just you I am on Three UK as is my friend both devices are sim free and his has never been rooted or bootloader unlocked. The Carrier app's get installed due to some .xml settings in the CDA Partition which check the network id number and then install the appropriate app if one exists.
Not sure why the UK is one of the last to get the official Oreo update but hopefully it will very arrive soon. :fingers-crossed:

Well, I've got the update but the process is a little long winded and had a hiccup along the way.
So, you need to remove the SIM card.
factory reset.
Sign into WiFi and Google account.
Select to restore your back up (this can be skipped if desired)
Once the back up is restored, connect to a Finland VPN
(I used express VPN from playstore)
Check for system updates, it will give you the android 8.0 notification.
Select to download
(I had to download it twice as the first time I encountered a verification error)
Allow to install.
After reboot replace sim card.
The process takes roughly 45 minutes to complete.
Edit
I've just read on Reddit there is an issue with all Nokia devices receiving any system updates in UK that Nokia / HMD will not confirm.
It's not good we have to factory reset and select other nations VPN to get system updates.

No it definitely isn't. So you're saying India VPN didn't but Finland did? I will keep that in mind. Perhaps it has to do with the fact that your phone is the European version

Tried twice.
Selected Finland and found the update immediately.

Cheers for the info. :good:
Is the TA-1020 available in India
If it's not then that would explain why the Indian VPN did not work.
I will wait and see if they sort it out as I am on the Oreo Beta anyway and now they have released the Kernel source my aim would be to try build LineageOS or some other OS.
If anyone with the TA-1020 who has installed the official Oreo could pull the system, boot and recovery with SPFlashTool for me that would be great as I would like to use the none beta Oreo for building the device and vendor trees. :fingers-crossed:
PS:
BTW What is the Kernel version on the Official Oreo as they have released the 3.18 version and I was kinda expecting the 4.4 version.

They took their sweet time. I was beginning to wonder if they would release any this month

3G network on Oreo was bad for me, only 1-2 bars while on 7.1.1 is 3-4 bars (4 bars mostly). I hope that they fixed this issue.

I've haven't yet had under full strength signal on 3G or 4G, but I've only had the 8.0 for update 24 hours so I'll keep my eye on it.
Battery is much better on Oreo, last 3 to 4 hours longer than 7.1.1

Did you try the VPN trick without the factory reset?
I don't understand why HMD aren't providing the files to flash manually as that would help get the update out to the UK faster.

OK, so maybe it's a bug that clears up after the factory reset. I know that on reddit some people are saying that just removing the SIM and clearing the Google Services Framework works as well so I'll give that a try and see what happens.

Yes I read the Reddit posts regarding clearing Google play services data and that was the first step I tried (as well as removing the sim)
That didn't work so I then spent last weekend using the factory reset / VPN method, but I found the India VPN method didn't work either.
I did not have any success with getting the 8.0 update notification until I factory reset and tried the Finland VPN, which worked fine.

I would be careful using the VPN method as one person on the Nokia Support forums has had issues with mobile data:
https://community.phones.nokia.com/support/discussions/topics/7000025647
It could also be related to the fact that there are two different versions of the Nokia 3, the TA-1032 and the TA-1020. The TA-1032 seems to be receiving the Oreo update but the TA-1020 seems to have been forgotten.

AT&T LG G3 D850 - just updated to stock MM 6.0 in India

Hello All,
I would like to share my experience & difficulty during MM upgrade of my device.
I am in India and used active AT&T SIM for upgrade.
I used following steps,
1) I was on stock KK 4.4.2
2) put AT&T SIM, and started the phone (I got this SIM from my friend who came from US)
3) disable data as it could cause data charges for the SIM
4) connected to WiFi
5) checked for software upgrade
6) immediately it showed up an upgrade
7) I started upgrade using WiFi, but immediately disconnected battery and removed the SIM (because this was not my SIM and I cannot hold it during upgrade as the download will take several hours)
8) I started my phone without SIM, and continued the upgrade
9) it took 2 hours to download (700 MB) at my home broadband with 1mbps
10) the upgrade was to Android 5.0.1 software version D85021f
11) but, after the upgrade I changed the system date to check for upgrade again
12) and, luckily it showed upgrade which was just 32 MB to update software version to D85021q
13) again, date change and this time another 700 MB upgrade
14) again it took 2-3 hours to download and 1 hour of upgrade to MM 6.0
15) again, date change, but no upgrade
16) Now, reset the date, inserted my SIM card.
one strange thing, happened after every restart of the phone. It was asking to update google play services, which I had to do.
Finally, I was able to upgrade my LG G3 D850 to Android Marshmallow. And, I know this would be last ever update from AT&T for this device.
Please let me know for any queries. Thanks.

I kept my phone without SIM till all software upgrades completed.
Also if you can get a hold of a H2O prepaid sim as well it will update, Might be easier to get ahold of in India over an AT&T one.

the procedure will surely work.
There would be around 4 to 5 updates, and to get each update, you should increase mobile's date by 1 day so that system runs software update check.
Hope this helps. Thanks.

Dear Tanay,
I was wondering about the bootloader apps. Will those annoying bootloader aps also appear after updating to MM according to your procedure...? Coz i really wish they were gone...!

I had that happen on one of the V2 bootloader roms for ATT. It gave the connection error for Samsung Pay. It had something to do with that particular version. I had to roll back to something else. When I called the S Pay support line, they claimed it was an error at my bank. My bank saw the like 10 attempts and flagged my acct. I went back to my previous version, factory reset, and suddenly S Pay worked again.

Doing factory reset was the only thing that cleared it up for me.
We found a fix for this. Before you use Odin to flash, go into Samsung Pay settings and reset your device (don't worry, it doesn't delete your cards, just removes them). Then go into Settings/Accounts and remove your Samsung account. Do the flash, and reboot. When you come back in, login to Samsung first, then go reactivate cards in Samsung Pay. Total process (with flash) should take less than 10 minutes.

Hey, I have a SM-G965U (originally on Verizon) and currently on ARG8 build number. I flashed via Odin the Unlocked firmware then the T-Mobile firmware to get my device 100% T-Mobile looking a few months back. How do I go about getting the device back to a Verizon firmware and looking like a Verizon branded phone? The same route? Unlocked then Verizon? Does the ARG8 firmware matter? Thanks in advance.

Ah, so you're switching. Well, the S9 does not have BYOD yet. That means putting a different SIM in the device does exactly nothing, except keep you from using the old network.
You can wait for the U1 firmware to be updated to bootloader version 3. At that point, you'd flip from U to U1 and back to U.

It's not really ignored. All the user data for all carriers is always there. But the active CSC on the device determines what gets loaded (that's only sort of true, but close enough). Anyway, there isn't a way to flip the CSC on U firmware, so you're sort of stuck...for now.
U1 will get updated later this month, according to the quarterly schedule. When you see carriers start pushing September patch (probably ARI1 or higher), then U1 won't be far behind, maybe a few days.
They are working on BYOD support right now. It's not quite fully working yet, but a leaked build showed it off, and they've been improving it. If you're patient, that will roll out, too. They didn't get BYOD fully correct until December of last year for the S8. Although, if memory serves, it initially rolled out a bit earlier. Some people needed to do factory resets to fully switch until the December update. That's where the current leak has us at, so it's really not far away.

Is HA/H6 the one that includes BYOD support?
So technically updating to that firmware via recovery and update.zip method, and then using odin to flash U ARG8, would be a way to switch without having to ever flash U1?

Hi TAJ_Rocks,
I did as you suggested... I checked for updates in hicare. It says I'm up to date and I didnt get any notifications. Then I changed the country to china in the hicare app and checked for updates that way. It still says I'm up to date. Is this the right way of doing it per your instructions? What do you suggest?

I'm in CA, using AT&T and T-Mobile SIMs (see upper left corner of attached pic). Didn't have to do anything, got the update via OTA.

I am not in the same situation, and I don't understand why the update doesn't just get updated from settings=>system &updates=>software update.
I remember having some problem with moving to ten though. I messaged huawei a polite query through one of their apps. Probably Hicare. They didn't respond, but within 36 hours an automatic update came through... coincidence? Not sure, but worth a try rather than try to procure an OS Sim... don't think that sounds too legit in this day and age.

I reached out to hicare and the rep said my device belongs to Singapore. But sadly there are international limitations. She said updates are released depending on region and so foreign devices might not receive the update on time or won't receive it at all. She suggested I try to update my 20x using HiSuite. She also recommended I talk to huawei customer care in singapore. She provided the weblink to them.
When you called hicare did you chat with a rep? How did you communicate this to huawei that resulted in a solution?
What do you suggest?

Unfortunately this doesnt work. I changed language to chinese and singapore in hi care. No update.
Huawei in singapore emailed saying since my device is made in singapore that the only way to update is to use a sim from singapore and be in the singapore area which is ridiculous.
I've looked at sim cards on amazon and ebay. Apart from the cost theyre shipping times call for delivery in June which again is ridiculous. Do you know of a way to get a singapore sim card soon in USA?
.
It has nothing to do with simcard just factory reset or install by pc hi suite

Hi TAJ_Rocks,
Thanks for the followup. Its been factory reset since I got the used phone last week from ebay already reset. I already installed hisuite and am still unable to update that way.
So I think the 2 other options are dload method and sim card from singapore.
But if I use the sim card option to update to 10, will huawei send security updates afterwards?

First of I dont think simcard is needed for update. Even if u bought and get update. Afterwards ull receive updates automatically no need for simcard again.

Hey TAJ_Rocks,
Yeah thanks for that. Someone on another one of my threads said the same thing. I plan to use the dload method to install 10 on my phone. The thing is, I need an Adapter Cable Type C to USB A. I ordered it and am awaiting delivery to use in the dload method. Hopefully it shows up this week fingers crossed. Thank for your help and replies!
.
Problem now is DLOAD method only works if we have the firmware for our model EVR-L29 and region code C636 for example.
But I cannot find them. So now what?

AU version to UK version flash?

Hi all,
Just got my x2 down under in Australia. It came with firmware CPH2025_11_A.15. And this is the firmware listed on the Oppo Australia site as the latest.
https://oppo-au.custhelp.com/app/software_update_detail/p_name/Find+X2+Pro
Changelog:
[System]
· Improved system performance and stability.
[Wi-Fi]
· Added the "Wi-Fi icon and status bar display" feature: You can now select how the Wi-Fi icon and status bar are displayed.
[Network]
· Optimised network and phone call performance and stability.
Though...
if i look on the UK website i see a newer version CPH2025_11_A.18 which some important fixes:
https://oppo-uk.custhelp.com/app/software_update_detail/p_name/Find+X2+Pro
[Security]
• Added the May 2020 Android security patch to enhance system security.
[System]
• Improved system performance and stability.
• Improved touch sensitivity of the screen.
• Fixed an issue where auto-scroll of the phone screen would become slow when you captured a long screenshot.
[Communications]
• Optimised network and phone call performance.
• Fixed several Wi-Fi connection issues and optimised Wi-Fi performance.
[Camera]
• Improved camera effects and user experience.
Question can i flash this version from UK? Has anyone tried and if so what is the method to use?
Thanks very much! (will push thanks!)
I flash this version over my version on my X2 Pro (which bought in France, Orange shop) and everything is fine so for me yes you can.
As long as you flash a firmware with the right model numnber (CH2025), which is the case here
Should be OK, as previously stated. Also be aware though, that the A.x number doesn't appear to correlate to anything. Some higher numbers are actually older? I also got an OTA update to A.22 after previously having UK version. This doesn't show on the website?
Thanks guys! (click!)

How do you flash it? On the Oppo website it mentions SDCard method. I assume flashing it is the same though you use Internal Memory yeah?

No.. v18 seems to be the latest available to download. It says May Security so isn't that old. Is your v22 June Security Update?

Don't think so. Just totally random numbering. V22 deffo came OTA ?
You download it on your phone (downloads folder). Then you reboot in bootloader nd from there you will see "update firmware" or something like that and somewhere else it's written "update from device", at that moment you will have to find the file in the "downloads" folder.

Something strange about these versions. i was on .21 (Thai dual sim), decided to clean install the UK version .18. Didn't do any changes (still had some Thai applications), then i went back to the software update section of settings, and there, surprise i see "update to .21" and it didn't change anything. I can't get the .22 (i tried to find it only, VPN, nothing...) and Even the .22 apparently also has may security patch and we are the 12th of June. So it's very odd.
Now this is where it gets interesting. on my thai phone, i don't have the option of using 5g in my sim settings (yes i have 5G with my carrier and i've used it already on another phone. Apparently there are "rumors" that The Thai version will be updated with a Firmware that will enable the dual sim on that "version". So... i'm really wondering how come that the Uk, Swiss, etc version have working 5G ... and not the thai.

Everything works after update.
Mine is AU single sim version. I was looking everywhere in AU for dual-sims CPH2025 as well but nobody is selling them. Only way I found is to import one myself from Thailand but couldn't be bothered. I'm also concern about after sales service, warranty etc so I end up buying locally. Saving me from potential headache

Question Which version of the March update should I patch and update with?

I bought my now rooted 6A via Aliexpress, and I live in Canada.
Current version is TQ1A.230205.002.
Looking through past updates, this is the first time they've singled out "Canada" for a specific update... Which version should I be patching/flashing, given that my phone came from overseas (but has the NA bands)?
13.0.0 (TQ2A.230305.008.E1, Mar 2023)
OR
13.0.0 (TQ2A.230305.008.F1, Mar 2023, WINDTRE/Canada)
From what I can see, Windtre is a specific carrier. I would go with The standard version for unlocked phones. If that's wrong then the process should abort itself before making any changes
The specific versions seem to be based on carriers. Wind Tre looks like an Italian carrier, so I'd guess the "Canada" applies for use with all Canadian carriers. Or, it may be based on some regulatory difference. Google sucks at transparency. But, the specific versions come and go, so I'd guess they're all about something which didn't get integrated into the mainline code in time, so they had to create a special version.
I would go with the WINDTRE/Canada version. You're rooted, so you could always switch if you have trouble.

Or if it is the wrong one you can just flash right over it with the Canadian one. But I really think that is for a French or Italian Canadian carrier that you don't subscribe to.

Follow up question: how do you do a nandroid backup?
I went to find TWRP and apparently boot.img is now part of the recovery partition so it won't work?
Can I just boot to TWRP using adb/fastboot from my computer to make the backup?
Just got this phone recently, so I haven't had the need to backup + update until now... Plus the whole "patching the security exploit" thing.
Dude, I would not start with the Windtre one. Sounds like it could just be a striped down/limited version. It looks like that rom might specifically limit access to specific bands that Windtre doesn't allow their customers to access.
I found this on Reddit about the pixel 7:
Google "even limited the band bandwidth on NR, like 20mhz for N3
It isn't a huge problem, unless some operator add/remove bandwidth on a certain NR band
This is the case with WINDTRE (Italy, 222-88): they recently added 20mhz to their N78 spectrum (before it was max 40mhz on some regions, others 20mhz, now every region is 60mhz) and now you can't use their N78 at all
Why?
Because on their carrier policy, WindTre SIMs can use only 40mhz, 20mhz and 40+20mhz on N78 (last case is NR CA, not 60mhz)
It's really great to have a 900€ phone (Pixel 7 Pro) that can't connect to N78 thanks to Google "
Good luck. Let us know how it goes!

If you find a good back up process, lemme know. I need a good recovery option, too.
I did find this elaborate process on Reddit: I HAVE NEVER TRIED IT.

You guys had me worried, and couldn't even get the phone to get the update notification (to check the version of the update).
But when I was looking at downloading the two versions on Google's ROM depository I noticed that you can directly update the phone through Chrome on my desktop???
Man, has tech changed since my last phone (Mi A1 on Oreo)...
It ended up flashing the Global ROM, so the Italian/Canadian one wouldn't have worked.
Gave up on backing up my phone, so I just exported/uploaded the settings for my launcher + AOSP mods + a couple of others then just went for it.
Thanks again for the assistance!

Android flash tool: https://developers.google.com/android/images
Just scroll down to the image you want and click "flash" next to it
It'll give you instructions, as well as help you with the drivers if Chrome can't detect the phone, then will reboot it into bootloader, then recovery, then back to normal boot into an updated phone.
Make sure to check that the drivers for recovery/bootloader modes are already installed by booting into them beforehand... Otherwise you'll have a small panic as I did and have to boot your phone again manually by holding the power + volume down keys for 30ish seconds (until it reboots) due to Chrome not detecting your phone.
I'd also suggest using a back USB port on your mobo rather than plugging it into any of the front USB headers.

??? The flash tool should install whichever image you choose. I've never tried picking a completely wrong one, but I suspect it does have a simple check that at least you're flashing for the correct platform (e.g. Pixel 6a).
The carrier versions are what gets sent as an OTA update via the particular carrier(s). It's not clear how you determined that the carrier specific one "wouldn't have worked." I suspect either would boot and "work", although the incorrect one may not take full advantage of the carrier's capabilities or may experience minor issues. Google has never provided guidance on exactly what types of differences there are.

All I know is that I didn't get a warning, the global ROM's bands are working with my carrier's (Public Mobile - a subsidiary of Telus) after being flashed, and as you've stated Google hasn't been open with the differences... so I'm going to err on the side of caution (and international compatibility) and stick with what works.
I may revisit it if I travel inter-provincially and discover issues with coverage, but the US bands are what are compatible with what's used in Ontario.
