S8+ canadian variant (G955W) ONE UI update? - Samsung Galaxy S8+ Questions & Answers

Hi, I recently came across a thread via the Samsung members app that talked about the "ONE UI" update and how to install it on s8 plus devices that end with a "W" (by CHMultimédia) (canadian variant) model code. I was wondering if anyone here has tried the method, and if so, are there any issues? bugs? How does this compare to the method already on XDA? and does this reduce battery to 80% like rooting?
Thanks

I use the G955U U1 firmware on my G955W. I don't really have any problems. Charges to 100% etc and I have the added bonus of now having the FM radio chip activated (which Bell lies about and says only Samsung can enable it).

Thank you!!! I'll try it out. I hope once the official release drops I'll be able to revert XD. In case the files don't work (for restore), is there any way I can do my own back up of the files I'd need in order to do a revert/restore to official Samsung Android 8.0?

I've been able to restore to stock without any problems. I use Super Backup Pro for my backups. Just make sure you backup to an external SD card as the internal will get wiped.

Sorry to bug you again, However I have a question in regards to restoring to stock. I'm slightly puzzled as to how to backup the required files in order to keep them to be able to revert to stock when needed, and also I do not understand how to even begin the process. I've rooted my fair share of phones, however with the s8+ everything is really quite new to me. (Currently my s8 G955W is completely stock, no root, no nothing).
Thanks

I basically do three backups (I believe in redundancy). I first backup with Superbackup Pro. With it I can backup sms, call logs, calendars, contacts and even apps. The second and third backups are done automatically but I make them do a backup NOW. These are under Settings/Cloud and accounts. First I backup to Samsungs's Cloud. I make sure everything I want backed up is turned on, then do a Sync Now. Next I back out of Samsung Cloud and pick Backup and Restore. Again there I make sure everything is turned on (except music for me as I'd fill my space too quickly. My music is backed up on my computer anyway). Lastly I pick Backup account from my Google Account. and pick "Back up now". With this I should have a good backup of everything I want.
Hope this helps.

I see, that makes sense. However, is there a way to backup the bootloader or the rom? I don't mind losing all my files however, I would like to keep my rom/bootloader just in case I screw up during the update to android 9.0 process or when I decide to revert back

You don't need to back them up as you can always get the latest version here: https://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/galaxy-s8-plus/SM-G955W/

OOO, thats really helpful! Thank you . Now that I know where to find the files, I have no fear of not being able to revert back to stock! Though I have a slight question, looking at the website there seems to be a lot of different versions, I have an unlocked s8+ with G955WVLS5BSA1, my question is since i've an unlocked variant, which file would you recommend I use in case I ever need to revert to stock? and also because my bootloader is G955WVLS5BSA1 with the CSC ver G955WOYA5BSA1 is it still possible to update to android 9.0 using this method? You don't seem to know a lot about flashing (my impression but I could be wrong as this is text only and not person to person) Things can go wrong very quickly and you risk bricking your phone. Basically your process is to flash a US version back to CK1 (T-Mobile is the best), then do the updates as per the link you provided. THEN if you don't like the beta, you have to flash back to stock per the link I provided. Either way, in the end, you will have to flash back to stock when the official version comes out as there will NOT be a way to upgrade from the beta to the official version. Personally, I would wait till the official version comes out. It should be this month. In fact, I personally didn't like the beta version so I've flashed back to stock and will wait for the official version.

*REWARD -Tablet lost Imei and network after attempting root

I'll give as much info as i can and will REWARD whoever can help me with this situation!
I have experience with different samsung phones rooting through odin and others never having much issues. This is first attempt with a tablet fyi.
Samsung tab 2 lte edition from at&t i497 5100
Attempted http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1957165
root method through odin and everything was going alright until halfway through it said failed. I then rebooted into download and attempted this version http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2101044
This method seemed to work as i was able to boot into recovery cwm and go through the options. I then ran the supersu zip and verified that the appdrawer had it in there. things looked ok i thought. so now i was ready to download a rom. Attempted the most current CM10 nightly through recovery.- it failed giving me the status 7 error. i then went to the only post about status 7 in the all things tab 2 thread and attempted to download mobile odin but when i loaded the app it said not compatible with my device.
I then attempted to download a stock rom and remove root from phone because sometime in this all i lost the ability to use wifi and my imei showed missing in the settings. no attempt at unrooting seems to work because of the cwm not allowing me to use roms. I attempted to recover the nandroid i made the minute i "rooted" and its giving me the md5 sum error as well.
Please help!!

I'm worried for you, in that you have corrupted your efs folder - did you make an efs backup? as far as i'm aware, you can only recover your efs if you have backed it up. good luck.
If it helps I am an At&t store manager, and i do have access to a identical tab that is about to be sent back from a return. I am scared though of corrupting that one and then being in a worse situation. If i knew i could create a backup that could be moved to my personal one i would do it. is that possible? I'm not familiar with an efs backup but am researching it to check now.

I'm not sure it would, as a store manager you will know imei numbers are specific to each device!...you could swap the tabs over, but I don't condone that
Did you by chance rename the backup after making it? That has caused me problems in the past.

Sorry I can't help, but is this the 7" tab? I have the 10.1" tab 2 and my model number is i497... LTE edition.
I totally understand what you mean now, i wasn't thinking a backup would switch over the imei i just thought it would contain whatever identifiers needed not realizing it would have the actual number in that.. I used total commander to look into the root file and there is a efs folder with all the separate folders "bluetooth, wifi, and other folders".

I did rename it when i was going through a fix for the md5 sum issue, i was going through adb and couldn't navigate to the folder so i did rename it... i cant imagine that the recovery would have an issue just because of that? i wouldn't be sure what to name it back to.
I wonder if Samsung has any option for me to send it in and get them to reboot the thing. This sucks!

i'm pretty sure samsung has an option for you to send it in, but depending on what firmware your running/whether the flash counter has increased in download mode - your warranty would be void - or you may have to pay some $$$$ - they may even refuse. i don't know for sure though.

I appreciate you talking me through the different things, even if it doesn't fix my issue. if the counter is at 0 it sounds like you still have root access, do you?
you could try flashing a stock firmware through odin , which ever came with the tab - 4.0.4??? get the firmware from sammobile.com - that may :fingers-crossed: get rid of the modified status.

You're missing the point! He has a corrupt imei number. He can flash that but still won't be able to get signal.
I had a simaler issue with my S3 (d2tmo) as well as many others. Qpst I believe is what I used to get the imei back. I had the links all save on the laptop but it died 3 moths back. (10 year old dell). http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1801997 try that out see if it will help. I have some of the other stuff saved that I will upload to you. Search the issue on S3 (us variants) it could help.
Samsung Rocks!
Great news! Samsung had me send it in and they repaired it in less than 2 days of having it. their ticket email says this
Problem found: ESN corrupted
Solution: Replaced PBA
-- not sure what a pba is but they didn't charge me for the repair! I'm taking this as a gracious sign from above that i should leave it well enough alone and enjoy it the way it was made! I'll just stick to rooting my s3 and doing what im comfortable with. I appreciate all your words of help and advice to try and narrow down a solution.
First of all, you flashed some things not meant for your device. the CF-Autoroot method is designed for the Pxxx models, NOT the SGH/SCH models. Flashing this on your device flashed partitions it shouldn't have.
Second, the PBA is the mainboard. I bricked my tab a few weeks ago (typo in my updater script) and they replaced the PBA also. Samsung warranty is pretty great. Glad you got it fixed.
Always, ALWAYS, be sure you flash a ROM/recovery/etc designed for your specific device. The pxxx tabs and sgh/sch tabs are 100% different in hardware AND partition layout. If you flash a ROM for the Pxxx tab on a SGH/SCH tab, it will overwrite imei. Moderators REALLY need to suck it up and create separate forums for the lte tabs.

I guess it'll be available in a few hours.
I guess they just haven't released it, yet.
Don't forget their different timezone.
Thank you all, maybe I'm getting too desperate I just wanted to confirm that my account is the right one, I'll be refreshing until it appears, thanks again!
EDIT: I believe being rooted would not be a problem at the moment of the installation, right? I know that I'll lose root after that, but as long as the actual installation does not give me problems, it's fine.

Considering that the images will have to be flashed through fastboot, you'll probably lose root and everything else on data/system partitions (unless they don't wipe it, but I think it does).

As long as you don't flash the userdata.img, all /sdcard data will be fine. You don't have to flash userdata.img to bump android versions! System, boot would do just fine (and bootloader if they bump it as well)
Or you could just wait till a flashable zip is posted. Someone will have one up within hours of release.

Unless they changed the folder structure like they did a few releases ago - if they did, best to do a clean install.
I'm backing up right now just in case.
Don't wanna mess with the installation script by flashing some things and not others (although there would be virtually no risk by flashing system and boot partition), but better safe than sorry, after all, we can just shove everything back when finished
Consider ir a backup routine, and you'll have an updated bk

That's an entirely different scenario. Each and everyone of us would need to wipe clean if that happens but usually a system and boot flash would do just fine
The N5 has been my FIRST of many, many, many Android phones and even Windows Pocket PC phones that I haven't felt the need to unlock/root etc. Everything has just worked great on it and I have always been able to do everything I wanted to do from this phone. I have been so satisfied with the phone that it has kept me away from XDA for a while. Don't know if that is a good thing or bad, lol. I used to be on this site for hours every single day and now I feel like I am light years behind in rooting. HA!
L has me interested though and I am contemplating unlocking my bootloader for it which just becomes a PITA with losing your data and adding things back and all that great stuff that takes so much of your time. Then if things suck you have to flash back to something else and the never ending process continues. The N5 has gotten me so much time back in my life but I feel like it might demand some of my time back to it. Oh I hate this stuff!!!!
I think I'll make a backup, just in case, as someone said previously, I would prefer to make a clean installation if it's needed and use the image provided by Google.
Thanks!

[Q] Help updating LG G3 (At&T) ?

Hey all,
A while back I rooted my LG G3 (great phone btw) and and I have, what I thought I have anyways, unrooted it through SuperSU due to my phone not being able to OTA update with an accompanying error message of not being able be updated while rooted.
I have just read about Lollipop finally being rolled out to U.S Android phones (finally)
Can anybody tell me how to update that doesn't require losing all of the stuff on my phone, or if I can make changes to the system files to make it recognizable that it isnt rooted, I read threads that this is a cause.
---I have tried using Lg Update Mobile tool or whatever its called, and tried LG PC Suite to look for an update, but it says its already up to date)
Please help?

The only safe way to unroot and update is the following. You might have to do factory reset in order to get the update.

I use MyBackup Pro.
There's a free version also on the Play Store and it doesn't require root. It won't work as good as it could if the phone was rooted but it's a win in this situation. I sometimes even use it instead of Titanium on my KitKat roms.

J727R4 Stock firmware nonexistent?

Hmm, so I'm going to try and bring root to these devices but first I need current stock firmware. So the issue I've run into, and this is the first time I've come across something like this... is that there doesn't seem to be any stock fw downloads available online. There are some extremely sketchy websites that try to get you to pay for low_ship firmwares but I don't like that.
How do we get current stock downloads for our devices if nothing has been released? I need SM-J727R4 J727R4TYU1AQD4 stock firmware for Galaxy J7 US Cellular...
EDIT:
Managed to get this phone rooted and everything was working great. Flashfire may have borked my System partition when I was doing backups, don't know how. But now I'm bricked until I can get firmware. Sent an email to Samsung, we'll see what they say.
Do you if the phone it comes unlocked ? Im interested in getting one
Sorry, Im on US Cellular but Im not sure that it is. I dont even know how to find out.
By the way, the firmware thankfully has been released. You can find it at SAMMOBILE and samsung-firmware.
Hi. Please, if root will be done - will it also work on European languages? Well thank you.
What is your exact model number, is it SM-J727R4?

There isn't an official TWRP release for this phone, but the SMJ727P is an exact match to the SMJ727R4 in hardware. Use the TWRP for that device, wipe your data partition to remove encryption, then without rebooting flash the Magisk 14 zip for root. SuperSU works but has some problems. You will lose all your data but this is what I did and it works well.
Now that goes without saying, if things go wrong I'm not responsible.
Please help. Everything is like me, but after the SuperSU v.2.79-SR3 is introduced and the following restart is still running: Verification failed. Well thank you.
Prize. J727R4 works on the Slovak and on the network. I want to share my experience.
1. Start uninstall without restart, all 5 items (Odin3_v3.12.10) Build number: NRD90M. J727R4TYU1AQJ3. After the restart process, we select a flashlight.
2. Release the rest without restart, insert twrp_3.0.3-1_sm-j727p_17517. After we start without restart, we select the flashlight.
3.Downloads without reboot. insert J727P-SR3-SuperSU-v2.79-SR3_rooted_boot_AQB9. after we pick the flashlight.
4. Trojhmat home, power, + set wipe-Gawlik.chase.data and select restart system in the menu. After the ratcheting and learning is the phone root and unlock.
Maybe I have to close this topic.

Odin Updates after TWRP.

Hey Guys,
So, I've got an A8 2018 (jackpotlte) and currently have it rooted and TWRP installed.
I'd like to update the firmware using Odin to the latest version, but I don't want to lose my app setups etc. The firmware I want to flash is from the same CSC (EVR) that I have currently.
I've got a full TWRP backup incase anything goes wrong, and all data such as photos is backed up separately as well.
My question is, what do I need to do to get this update installed without losing my settings etc?
Will I need to reflash TWRP to the recovery after the update? And if so, I'm assuming I'll have to re-apply the no-verity and opt-encrypt patches?
Thanks for your help!
Last paragraph is correct.

Yes
You can try backing up apps and settings in Samsung Cloud.
Also, this app here may work for you. It keeps all your settings intact. Not sure how it'll work after an update, but I've used it while switching ROMS and if anything, it'll save you loads of time on your downloads after updating.

IF YOU FLASH STOCK FIRMWARE, YOU WILL LOSE ROOT. wITH THE NEWER FIRMWARE, YOU WILL HAVE TO USE THAT SPECIFIC VERSION OF THE FIRMWARES ROOT METHOD. yOU WILL HAVE TO FLASH THE csc TO DO WHAT YOURE WANTING TO DO, WHICH WILL FACTORY RESET.
Crap, all in caps. Im not gonna retype it, just know i wasnt yelling lol
there are app backup apps you can get like titanium backup that will restore most of your stuff including personalization.

I seriously thought you were angry. I was waiting for the part that... never came.
I re-tried the migrate app (also in zee store).
It's better than i remembered.
BUT IF YOU READ THE PREVIOUS POST, IT IS ALSO CORRECT. THERE. THAT SHOULD GIVE YOU PLENTY OF OPTIONS. (Couldn't help it).

well, just so ya know, i had something funny as a response here and it was in all caps. Well, xda un-capped the whole thing except for the beginning of sentences and so forth where it would have been correct to do so. I was just gonna go back and correct it, but i found this explanation to be even funnier than the original post, so here we are LOLOL!!!
