Is WiFi calling built into the Moto G/Android 5.1.1? Being on T-Mobile, coverage is terrible in my house so if I can't use WiFi calling it's a bust for me. I really want to buy the phone though.

No Volte/wifi calling.

Will the Android M update make it possible to do WiFi calling on T-Mobile or is it a hardware limitation?
I've seen some fixes tried for it but I don't think they worked. I think it's a hardware issue and that band was removed from the phone at T-Mobile's request.

I'm wondering the same thing. I heard WiFi calling will be native in Android m. Has anyone tried WiFi calling on M yet to see if it's there?

The only way to get Tmo wifi calling is with a device that has a Tmo branded rom. If you buy a device ONLY sold as unlocked, such as this one or a Nexus (prior to Nexus 6) you will not get wifi calling. It can be ported to AOSP roms, etc. if a variant of your device is sold by Tmo, but it's very very rare to find one like Moto G with wifi calling, since it isn't available to buy from Tmo, with a Tmo branded rom.
As far as I know, the only reason N6 got it at all is because of their exclusive partition dedicated to carrier additions, like apps, binaries, etc....wifi calling is also installed here, if I'm not mistaken.
Also....not to be 'that guy' but have you tried hangouts? It does work on wifi....just saying

I have a Nexus 6 on Android M and it has WiFi calling biut wasn't sure if that was cause of the ROM I'm using or if it was just in M stock since the rumor was that M will have WiFi calling built in.
I recently broke the screen on my n6 so I bought a galaxy grand prime as a backup phone cause it has band 12 and WiFi calling. If the moto g got WiFi calling with the M update I'd take my grand prime back and go buy a moto g.

There are official factory images specific to each carrier with Nexus 6. The Tmobile one includes wifi calling. I don't have one, but my sister does and when I was walking her through a factory flash once I noticed they uploaded a tmobile .img that has wifi calling.
For moto g, I'm not sure we'll get it, but there is a MM rom in the Original Development section here, so if you'd like to play around and see if you can get it working, I'm sure many people would be appreciative!
I personally use hangouts for 100% of my mobile communication, so I'm pretty indifferent about this. If I could get a Tmo plan without voice coverage on my phone I would.
The new Nexus 5X and 6P are supposed to work with TMo wifi calling out of the box, no special updates from TMo.
What about band 12 on the Moto G? Any hope for that? The reason I care for these is because as luck would have it both at home and work TMo signal is terrible. And yes, I rely on Hangouts over wifi too. The problem with terrible signal is that it also drains your battery, so you have to automate turning cell radio off and leaving just wifi on to save battery. I'd rather not do all these sometimes unreliable workarounds.
I have the Unlocked A9 and I'm using it on T-Mobile USA.
Setting--> Mobile Data--> Voice over LTE is checked.
VoLTE worked with original firmware, but with the November Security Update (639737.6), it no longer works for me. (VoLTE = calls made under 4G LTE. When I make phone calls now, it changes to 4G even though I have 4 bars 4G LTE).
Please let me know if it works for you. Thanks.
I'm still waiting for my unlocked A9 for use on T-Mobile, so I can't give you another example.
I have read that there is no such thing as 4G voice, only (4G) VoLTE. (4G = LTE = data only.) If it is 4G (i.e. data) and doesn't support VoLTE then it must be using a 2G (GSM) band for voice. If it is showing 4G when you are talking then I think it must be VoLTE. At least that is how I understand things.
I'm on the latest ota update for the unlocked version and VoLTE works fine for me. I was concerned unlocking the bootloader would change that but i just completed that and calls still go over lte
In fact I've left my phone in lte only mode for the past week

Thanks for the input. Based on our info, I'm surprised that VoLTE does not work for me. When I make a call the 4G LTE goes to 4G meaning that it's a GSM call (not through data.) (LTE Discovery confirms this, as the LTE radio shuts-off during the call.)
I might factory-reset my phone and start from the beginning. Not happy, since this is hours of work...

Could be, but I have a Samsung Avant sitting next to it, and the Avant's VoLTE works while on my A9 it does not. Speed test results are similar for the phones, so I know that the connection is good.
Just got off the phone with T-Mobile, they transferred me to HTC tech support. HTC wasn't much help (just reading from a computer screen). The tech promised that a level 2 support person would call me in the next 24-72 hours.

Thanks for all your help. When I read that you are on the latest ota update and your VoLTE works, I suspected it was my phone. Well, I factory-reset my A9 this morning, and VoLTE works now.
BTW, no call from HTC. You would think that they would be interested in helping buyers of their new flagship phone, but nothing.

I think they are buried. I have tried emailing them this week about accessories, also tried their chat support, and just nothing. And still no shipping date for my unlocked garnet of 23 Oct. I really don't think they were ready for this introduction and the demand that followed. I just hope the phone is worth it.

I like the A9 a lot. Coming from a Samsung S4, the signal strength is OK, but I am very pleased with the battery -- it last all day for me. Screen is bright, camera is good, and it has the latest Android.

can you tell me your apn settings for t-mobile on a AT&T unlocked a9?
Verizon’s latest update for the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge brings Wi-Fi and HD Calling improvements.
To check for the update, head into Settings>About phone>Software updates>Check for updates.
Before you download:
Connect your device to a Wi-Fi network, or make sure it has a strong Verizon Wireless network connection.
Ensure your battery is fully charged before starting the software update.
I saw and downloaded the update. We use WiFi calling since we live in sticks and cell signal here is week. We had noticed poor quality recently, hopefully this update helps.

We've NEVER had luck with Wi-Fi calling. We have 75 MB Comcast connection and when the phone rings, it always disconnects when I answer, or a few seconds after.
Does anyone else have this going on? We can't even use it. We've heard from others that it's a great feature, just we can't get it working.
Anyone else upgraded? How is it? Does it make a noticeable difference in volte?
Updated and the phone seems identical. WiFi calling seems hit or miss for me: it sometimes connects, and sometimes sounds all right, but no real change from before.
Can someone confirm FoxFi works on update?
Sent from my SM-G920V using Tapatalk
After dealing with so-so signal strength and ZERO wifi calling abilities with this Verizon phone, tech support is sending me a new SIM card. They said if that doesn't fix my issues, they'll send me a new phone right away.
If you're having problems, I'd suggest going the same route.

jio volte calling feature doesn't work in any custom rom. can u guys please develop to enable volte in any custom rom ?? please eagerly waiting .
dayum r u serious????
This has been mentioned what seems like a hundred times recently...
VoLTE works with most carriers on custom ROMs, but not Jio.
We don't know why Jio VoLTE works on stock and not custom ROMs, it seems to be something at the RIL (Radio Interface Layer) that is proprietary to Moto and/or non-standard.
The only way this will work is if you find a developer with sufficient experience in troubleshooting RIL issues (rare), that has the device, has Jio service, and the drive to do it.
Why is this so important? Can you not make and receive calls on the "standard" 3G service of Jio?

No, jio services are only LTE service provider. They are not licensed to provide other than LTE. That's why they are giving only VoLTE services as for now so you can't access 2g or 3g network to call.

I don't think changing carrier happens, because they are giving unlimited internet, unlimited call and unlimited SMS for free at 0 ₹( $) cost so stay stock and stuck.

SMS also are being sent on the back of the 4g network of Reliance JIO...
I faced this issue as i was on RR rom on my Moto G3 Turbo edition and then realised
no CM based rom has VOLTE support... at least not for Moto...
I was getting the same problem as others,, you had to dial 1977 to activate all the free unlimited
offers and you couldnt hear sound from the opposite side since the call was going through normal
carried signal and not VOLTE...
I flashed stock rom and immediately it showed VOLTE in the status bar... Activated using 1977
and enjoying unlimited CALLING over LTE, data UNLIMITED ... and UNLIMITED SMS

I never tested it or said it would work, just that the 3GPP standard supports it, meaning I was acknowledging my previous comment was incorrect.
Jio is the exception, or maybe forerunner, here... They may be the first VoLTE *only* service in the world, every other carrier uses a mixed system to my knowledge. We are bound to see some issues with devices and roms because they have never had to deal with this circumstance before.

In our device we can't get to work jio join app for calling function, it recognises as Volte device so calling is disabled for our device.
In coming days they are going to release new version which is going to have support only video call option for our or Volte devices.
Try this. Worked nicely for me.

New to this forum. Just got my Motorola One Hyper today. Am I able to make wi-fi calls on this phone? When I go to my Settings, Wi-Fi Calling is grayed out. If I long press it, Wi-Fi Calling comes up, but again, the screen is grayed out. It will not allow me to enable it. I am connected to my home wi-fi network, so that is not the problem. Thanks in advance.
It depends on your carrier, call customer service and ask if they use wifi calling. It works for me on T-Mobile on both stock and omni out of the box.
Beyond that, make sure you are updated to the latest stock firmware. The last update fixed volte and vowifi.

Thanks for the response. After the phone went through all of its updating, the wi-fi issue solved itself. But I have another question. This phone was labeled as "International version" when I purchased it. I discovered that it's actually (RETLA), thus the instructions only came in Spanish. Will this be an issue using it in the USA?
Thanks

Go to the link below, it compares the bands different models of our phone operate on. If more bands are compatible with your network, your network reception will improve.
